A podcast devoted to authenticity, resilience, and communication between diverse and passionate people (with a healthy dose of antics, insanity, and humor).

Justin wrote his own blurb. Thank you Justin! "As a young boy, I always knew one day I would be thrust into the spotlight and make a name for myself. My day has come, and I'm here looking down on everyone that seems so small to me now. I am a GOD amongst men. Thank you." - Justin Johnson Topics discussed: loving people, satire, my small bladder, Texas, pizza, sexuality, and much, much more.
For episode 39, we have an account of my wonderful friend Ali and I galivanting around the space-time continuum, through a delightfully twisty and turny wormhole of conversation. Topics discussed include (but are not limited to): hip-hop, nonviolent communication, metal, body image, compassionate self talk, maidens, crones, non-monogamy, Karen Horney and social penis envy, penis wielders, vulva havers, gratitude, empathy, cuddling, listening, panromanticism… Photo courtesy of Linda Gray
In episode 38, I had a real conversation with my friend Bobby. We discussed resilience, boundaries, self-awareness, parenting, compassion, broken government programs, not spreading shitty day energy, how we think and feel about the experience of authenticity, and his negative first impression of me. This episode is packed full of value and meaningful dialogue. I included an intro that focused on what I've learned and taught about boundaries. The outro, featuring Claire Sarff-Foden, a licensed therapist, discusses the task of communicating with a friend about seeking counseling. This episode is different than most of the ones I've posted. Please let me know what you think about it! - Benji Book mentioned:Trauma Stewardship: An Everyday Guide to Caring for Self While Caring for Others
In episode 37, Claire and I went hiking up Chuckanut Mountain together, and took turns answering 12 questions, as a response to this article. This is the first of three episodes we'll be recording, each with a set of 12 questions, totaling 36. The questions are supposedly designed to facilitate vulnerability and exposure. We decided to turn it into a playful experiment. Let us know what you think!
Yo! It's been a while! I'm back, with Authentic Warrior Radio version 3000.0! For the first time ever, I've decided to be a guest on my own podcast. In this episode, Claire asks me some questions about the podcast, including what I've been up to since I stopped posting, why I took a break, what I've learned, what I've inspired me to start this podcast in the first place, what inspires me to continue it now, and what changes I plan to make going forward with the show. We also talk a bit about a zillion other things. I have a backlog of episodes from last year, that I'll be posting between new episodes. I implore you to email me or message/comment on social media, to let me know what you think about the changes I mention, what you'd like to see and hear going forward, who you'd like me to have on the show. What were your favorite qualities of AWR, before? What would you like to hear more or less of? Are you or a friend inspired to be on the show? Thank you very much for checking this out. I'm looking forward to connecting!!!
Wil Nelsen has been a father since he was a teenager. Watching family, friends, and co-workers work very hard to continue to live an unsatisfying lifestyle, Wil set out to learn from their success and failures. His curiosity grew into a podcast, an audio log of people living diverse experiences, and it’s effects on our common day-to-day lives. For example, if a rock climber has to overcome fear and the demand for responsibility, is it easy to be organized and confident in life?
Welcome to episode 34 of Authentic Warrior Radio, featuring Episode 24's very lovely Jenna Goodman, a friend of mine who is a local artist and a very thoughful human. This episode of AWR, hereinafter referred to as "AWWWRRRR!!!" is brought to you by Taj Eye, the maestro of video, music, and paint who was featured way back on episode 10. If you appreciate the cover art of this podcast, go over to tajeye.com and have a look-see at Taj's beautiful works. You can also go to authenticwarrior.org/friends and find a link to his website. If you're like me, and you have eyes, and a heart, don't miss this opportunity to feed your heart the artistic visual substance that it's always begging you for. It's begging because it's a human heart, and those things need art in order to continue cultivating spirit in the world. Would you starve your kid, or your pet? Unless you're some kind of abusive, rotten, toxic, neglectful, demon-plagued, psychopath, you had to have answered no to that question. If you didn't this is not the podcast you'll like, but it might be the one you need. And if you did answer no, then dude, by gosh, feed your heart before it turns to stone and you start rampaging through the city, committing hate crimes. I know that it's complicated and it might seem like a stretch to believe, but if you look in a text book at a college, it will tell you that the eyes are the mouth holes that feed art to your heart. So go to TajEye.com, right now, to avoid becoming a psychopath. You can also go to www.sunspotseries.com and prevent yourself from committing hate crimes by consuming her beautiful, fascinating art. AWWWRRR is also brought to you by my precious, benevolent, supportive, loving, possibility-of-happiness-creating, contribution-making patreon subscribers: Cap'n Christopher Cook, the magnificent Matt Heggem, my sister Megan "Myeff Bomb" Gentile, my main man Mike Roe, my cousin Zeddy Mack McVizzly Bear, and Molly the Cop. Thank you all for your contributions to this podcast. Molly, I've scattered at least a handful of karaoke tracks throughout this episode, to thank you for your top-tier pledges. You are all appreciated and I hope you enjoy my obnoxious singing as well. Enjoy this episode of Authentic Warrior Radio, featuring the marvelous, the merry, the majestic, mixed bag of magical magnetism, Megan Galley. Megan is a human whose magnificant, massive energy is more meaningful and moving than my meager mind can muster the must-have magnitude or mutterings to macrame together even a make-shift monstrosity of words to accurately describe. She's funny, sweet, beautiful in all the ways, loving, compassionate, vulnerable, real, intelligent AF... and here I am making my morose, sad excuse for a masterpiece, while you listen mindfully, your motivation dwindling, me missing my moment to mack on your curiosity. I've met my match, mofo. Hunter Clagett and Lara Carter are two of my closest friends. They're more like family to me, truly. Hunter is a skilled pro fighter and a gifted coach. Lara is the gym mom, and the Czar of marketing at Bellingham Mixed Martial Arts. We had an excellent conversation about navigating transition, being an athlete and gym owner, told some funny and interesting stories about the Washington fight community, and they both made a point of showing ample gratitude. I hope you enjoy the podcast!
Sean Reidy is somebody I consider to be a new friend of mine, and a kindred spirit. He's an excellent jiu-jitsu training partner, a wilderness instructor, and someone who lives and thinks intelligently and philosophically, but doesn't identify as a philosopher. Sean is passionate about many things, three of which are authenticity, resilience, and communication. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to continue to glean and share wisdom in our interactions, and to have had him as a guest on Authentic Warrior Radio. I hope you appreciate this conversation as much as I do! Thank you Sean! Dave Porter is the living embodiment of conviction. In addition to being that, he's an incredible leader, coach, and friend. He's a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt (under Pedro Sauer), a b-boy from the boogie-down Bronx, a once-in-a-past-life lord of competitive pole dancing, a rock climbing badass, and a card trickster. Please enjoy this episode, and stay tuned for more Dave in the future! Molly the cop is an extremely empathic, compassionate, kind, loving, benevolent soul. She's also a really good cop. I'm so excited to finally get this episode out there! Get ready to be inspired AF!!!
Landin Fusman (Space Travelling Robot Man from the Future), is a disadvantageously intelligent, loving, compassionate, brilliant creator. He's a member of my league of heroes, and a brother to me. He's always got several projects going at once. I don't think I've ever known anyone as versatile, adaptable, and proficient in such a vast variety of sciences (hard and soft) and arts. One of his projects is the Mr. Hotbox (https://www.mrhotbox.com/) This episode covered more topics than I care to list in text, and I'm pretty much certain I'd forget several topics if I were to attempt to. Just listen to it all the way through. You don't want to miss what Landin gives. Much love! Ron Raymundo is my cousin, a talented, hilarious, and wholehearted human. He's a musician, a comedian, and a promoter of health and optimism. Lunchhammer is a luchador, one of Ron's trainers, possibly his greatest inspiration, a fighter, a hero, and a human's human. I'd say he's just what the doctor ordered, but my instinct tells me Lunchhammer doesn't go to doctors, most likely because they spend more time reading and dealing drugs than training and taking action. He's a little rough around the edges, but he means well. Kala Buchanan is a mother, and a human services professional with a strong background in psychology and human behavior. She's an compassionate, heartfelt, and an excellent communicator. This was a last minute episode that we squeezed into about forty minutes. I hope you appreciate Kala's mind and heart as much as I do! #mentalhealth #mindfulness #compassion #parenting #humanbehavior
Jenna is a brilliant, beautiful human. She's an artist, whose processes in life and in creativity are unique, inspiring, and resilient. We talked about all kinds of stuff in this episode, including her art, some philosophy, some details of our back stories. We agreed that this episode is only part one. I can't wait for part two!
Katy Gray is a musician, and a kind, passionate person, who runs a non-profit radio station and creative space called Make.Shift
Dori has spent a lifetime working to empower others to be the best they can be. She loves to dig deep into big-picture endeavors and is known for her leadership abilities, as well as her adventurous spirit. Dori has years of leadership experience, a masters degree in clinical psychology, along with decades of developing and creating programs and workshops designed to bring out the best in individuals, teams, and groups. She loves the teaching/training process and knows how to not only engage her audience, but how to ensure an effective, fun learning and growth experience.
Tommy Jordan is a hip-hop artist, and I feel like he's much more that that. He does a great job of representing himself. so I'm not gonna say more. You know who, depending on who you ask, does a terrible job of representing himself? Me. This episode is full of disclosures I might regret someday. But, it's straight from the heart, and Tommy is a boss. So, please enjoy this fine contribution to podcastry.
I'm not even sure where to start with this one. Meet Lokeye! He's a musician, a writer, a neuroscience researcher, a teacher of communication, and a column of love and light.
Professor Paul James is an anthropologist, biologist, father, and food enthusiast. He's also a very kind, open, caring person. We talked about everything from Devil's Club root, to evolution, gratitude, loyalty, and love. I highly recommend listening to this episode. If you're a student at WWU, go say hi to Paul!
This is an episode I recorded back in September (2018), with two lovely and bad-ass women, who met each other in the ring, for their first fights, back in July. I've been looking forward to publishing this one, and the time feels right. I hope you enjoy listening to Pandora Drossos, and Robin House, while they discuss the fight, and many of the other contents of their respective hearts.
This episode's guest is Allison Bennett, Mother, Friend, Woman, and Life Coach. She's the wife of our previous guest, Ryan Browne, from episodes 14 and 15, and she's one of my best friends in the whole wide world. She and Ryan are the parents of my precious, beautiful gosh-daughter! We had a lot of fun with this one! Enjoy the love and goof-off-ness!
I recorded this episode, with my kids, a while ago now. I held off on publishing it, because I wanted to be certain that my kids would be cool with me putting it out there. We listened to it together a couple times, and we all agree that it's authentic, and we feel good about going ahead with it. There are some parts of it that were unexpectedly intense. Listening to it now, there are some things I'd like to change about my communication with them. Over all, though, it's a wonderfully special episode, and I love it! They're such heartfelt and astute young Warriors. I'm so proud of them!
Trust me, you don't wanna skip this one. Ryan tells the intense, adventurous, and powerful story of the eighteenth year of his life, which he spent playing a chaotic game of hide and seek with multiple institutions. Ryan Browne is a father, husband, massage therapist, fitness trainer, and a lover of all things that grow. He's talented, driven, brilliant and resilient. His heart is massive, flowing with love and truth. I'll let him speak for himself.

Tony"Bones" Hugo (@tonybonesmma on Insta), is dynamic, determined, adaptive human. He's a father, a fighter, a coach, and a crucial part of my fight team at [Bellingham Mixed Martial Arts][1]. He's a survivor, and a thriver. This is by far the longest episode I've recorded. Just an FYI, he arrived at my house, to record, after attending a memorial gathering for the anniversary of a friend's passing, and he had been drinking. He's authentic, assertive, and a genuinely loving, caring person. I love this dude. I'm stoked to say that my friendship with him has become one of my strongest ties. We talked about such a variety of topics in this episode, there's something in it for everyone. I hope you enjoy it! Also, thank you for being on the show Tony, and for not being an asshole!!!
Jess Munter (@jessmunster_bjj on Instagram) is a powerfully resilient warrior. She's an Abu Dhabi World Pro Para Jiu-jitsu Champion, a SJJIF PJJ Champion, and she holds multiple other medals from various Brazilian jiu-jitsu events, including Abu Dhabi Grand Slam LA. Despite her having a brachial plexus injury that only allows her the use of her right arm, she's constantly adapting and transcending limitations. Jess's heart is full of faith, determination, and passion. and her ability to tackle adversity and choke it the f**k out is absolutely remarkable. Thank you for being exactly who you are, Jess!
John Herbert is a Self-Motivated Destineer. He's resilient, self-sufficient, self-motivated (I know, I already said that, but he makes it worth saying twice), cyclist, minimalist, and destiny-owner. I had never spoken to him at length prior this recording. I made sure not to have anything more than small talk before hitting record. This dude is super authentic, and I can't wait to hang out again. At the end of this episode, I felt like there was something we hadn't touched on, that needed to be recorded. Sure enough, after we stopped recording, we had more great conversation about some very meaningful subjects. So, stay tuned for another episode with John in the near future. A big thank you to Clint Sana (from episode 4), for connecting me with John Herbert!
Jon is one of my best friends. He's a nurse, an autodidact like a MF (he has formal schooling, but he studied stacks upon stacks of textbooks in other subjects while he earned his formal degrees), he's a war veteran, and truly one of the best people I've ever known. I love him with all of my heart. We've lived together as roommates twice. My kids and I consider him family. We've banded together during each other's high times and low times. He's also ridiculously intelligent and more qualified to do the shit that he refrains from doing than most of the people who do those very things with the proper qualifications. This dude deserves at least one honorary Ph.D.
This is an intense and powerful episode featuring my friend Taj. Taj is extremely inspiring and resilient person, with multiple talents, and heart and drive like no other. We talked about so many things in this episode, from art and music to PTSD and martial arts. He opened up and told some viscerally moving stories about his life. For that, I have immense gratitude. Thank you Taj! Taj is a badass artist and musician. Check out the full show notes for links to his work.

Jessica Hale is a baker, writer, dancer, and a defsies a warrior! This beautiful human was referred to me by episode 3's guest, Sabine Grames. Jess showed up at the gym, just hours after we were connected on social media, and blew my mind! Thank you so much, Jess! I truly appreciate you!
Alexander "Major" Sturm is a beacon of light, and a talented musician. He's the vocalist and guitarist for Mr. Feelgood and the Firm Believers.
Lara Carter is one of my favorite humans. She's dope AF. Fun facts: she's extremely educated and she's got a warrior's heart. She's the co-owner of Bellingham Mixed Martial Arts (my home gym).
Clinton Sana (@crintasan on Instagram) is an artist, a coach, and a fighter. He's also a wonderful human, with a a powerful heart, soul, multidimensionality, and intensity! Yes, I made one of those words up. But Clint is one of the people who makes it a real thing. I look forward to recording with Clint again! Go checkout is art on Instagram! Come watch us fight!
Sabine Grames is a beautiful, loving, and rare human being. She's also a licensed and certified Life Coach and Counselor. She's a hero of mine, and I believe you'll relate to me on that after hearing this episode. For more info on Sabine's services, to read her blog, and check out some recommended reading, visit her website at https://beyondthewanderlust.wixsite.com/outside-the-lines.
