What do you do when a new client lays down on your bed with bad lash work? Do you say anything? Do you bash the lash artist who did the work? In today's episode, we sit down the Kalie Duvall, the owner of LBK Lashes, and talk about why she got into lash training and how she deals with clients who come in with bad lash work from other lash artists. "Tender Mercies" (1983) is about a former successful musician named Mac Sledge (Robert Duvall) who lost everything good in his life due to alcohol. When the film opens, he and a friend are staying in a motel, getting drunk and fighting while the proprietor, Rosa Lee (Tess Harper), and her young son, Carl (known as Sonny, played by Allan Hubbard), watch from their porch. When the friend skips out before paying the bill the next day, Mac offers to work for Rosa Lee in order to compensate for the room. She agrees, but tells him that he can't drink while he's working there. Thus begins Mac's slow streak of improving his life. He sticks with sobriety, marries Rosa Lee, and starts writing music again. It's the kind of movie that's not really plot-driven … more slice of life, at arm's length, character study about Mac's quiet redemption. Other highlights are Betty Buckley, who plays Mac's successful country star ex-wife, Dixie, and Ellen Barkin as Mac's estranged teen daughter, Sue Ann. The screenplay is written by Horton Foote, who won the best adapted screenplay Oscar for “To Kill a Mockingbird” in 1962. He also won a best original screenplay Oscar for “Tender Mercies” in 1983 and has a Pulitzer Prize for drama for his play, “The Young Man From Atlanta” and an Emmy for a TV adaptation of William Faulkner's “Old Man.” The director, Bruce Beresford (who we completely forgot to mention by name — sorry, Bruce), is probably best known for “Driving Miss Daisy” (1989), although my personal favorite film of his is “Double Jeopardy” (1999). Here are some things we mentioned during the episode and/or that we think you should check out: Norman K. Denzin's article in The Sociological Quarterly that provides a feminist close-reading of the film. Unfortunately, you need access to JSTOR to read it, but if you email me (firstname.lastname@example.org), I can send you a copy. 1991 Robert Duvall interview on "Later with Bob Costas" 2002 Horton Foote interview at the Austin Film Festival Tess Harper presenting an award to Bruce Beresford at the 2010 Woodstock Film Festival Some interesting trivia: Duvall's only Oscar is for this film. He had been nominated for the following films (but did not win): “The Godfather” (1972), “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “The Great Santini” (1979), “The Apostle” (1997), “A Civil Action” (1998), and “The Judge” (2014). Duvall's contract stipulated that all of the songs had to be sung by him. “Over You,” the song Dixie performs at the Opry, was also nominated for an Oscar. Duvall wrote two of Mac's songs, "Fool's Waltz" and "I've Decided to Leave Here Forever.” Others were country classics and not written for the film. Universal Studio lost faith in the film after it performed poorly at test screenings. They also sort of ignored Willie Nelson's offers to promote the film. David Lynch was a contender for director at one point. Can you imagine this film with him at the helm? Actually, it probably would have been like “The Straight Story" (1999). The film was selected to screen in competition for the prestigious Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1983. Robert Duvall made his official cinema movie debut as Arthur "Boo" Radley in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962), whose screenplay was written by Horton Foote. Horton Foote and Duvall worked together on five projects: “TKAM,” William Faulkner's “Tomorrow” (1972), “Tender Mercies,” “The Midnight Caller” (play, 1958 debut), and “The Chase” (1966, based on his 1956 novel). Tess Harper and Bruce Beresford worked together on three films: “Tender Mercies,” “Crime of the Heart” (1986), and “Alibi” (1989). Jeannine Oppewall was hired as art director. Beresford praised her as "absolutely brilliant," especially for her attention to very small details, "going from the curtains to the color of the quilts on the floors." It was Oppewall who named the motel Mariposa, Spanish for "butterfly," which symbolizes the spiritual resurrection Mac Sledge would experience there. Oppewall has four academy award nominations for best art direction: "Seabiscuit" (2003), "LA Confidential" (1997), "Pleasantville" (1998), and "The Good Shepherd" (2006).

What I Thought Could Use Some PolishingThere were volume issues (the announcer was overpowered by the production music and sound effects. The interview volume was fairly lower than at the show's beginning, so I had to adjust my volume. The opening was all about you. As a new listener, I don't care about you (it sounds harsh but it's true) especially when you have someone who was HOMELESS AT 16! Why are you burying the lead? If you asked someone, "what would you like to hear first my report on a band from the 90's or the story of a woman who was homeless at 16?" Also, my wife and I are going to top gun. If you want to include this stuff, put it at the end of the show where the super listeners are. I was surprised by a few of your questions. Do you remember the day your mother abandoned you? She said yes, and then you moved on. I'm pretty sure the audience feels that is a typical response. I'm not sure it added much to the story. Then (after revealing she was a victim) you follow up with, "Why did you pick the Navy over other armed services?" I just found that odd. This may be due to your experience in service, but for me, I was like, "What does that have to do with overcoming her hurdles? Who is this show for? From the Eagle Community Church of Christ in Mont Belvieu, TX. This week, John continues the hermeneutics study by looking at questions we should ask when studying scripture. Make sure to listen, because this will be very beneficial! In Grasping God's Word, Duvall and Hays tell us how important it is to understand the historical context with its differences and similarities to us today. The authors view interpretation as a journey, and we should learn how to cross the "river" from the ancient context to us. John Gunter leads us in a Bible class throughout the Summer. Our Wednesday night series this Summer will be on Hermeneutics (how to study the Bible). Throughout this series, we will build a foundation so anyone can learn how to better study scripture. FALLING DOWN (1993) begins innocuously enough when an unnamed white male in his 50's abandons his car in the blazing heat of downtown Los Angeles traffic with the simple and relatable enough desire to get home to his family. Meanwhile Martin Prendergast (Robert Duvall) is having a sh*tty last day on the job, stuck in that same congestion and heading towards a retirement he doesn't want from a police force that doesn't respect him, in order to become a carer for his unstable wife. As reports emerge of an unusual robbery at a supermarket and a gang-land dispute gone horribly wrong, Prendergast finds himself largely alone on the trail of "D-FENS" who leaves a trail of violence in his wake. The double D's - Duvall and Douglas - are both excellent; Douglas in particular as William Foster, the simmering ball of rage and alienation at the centre of the movie, while there's many memorable and well-executed scenes which have had a lasting impact on popular culture but this has always been a movie with some dubious messages and a very dark point of view. As an audience we're invited to enjoy Douglas's rebellion, to somehow see him as defiant in the face of oppression and therefore by extension we should enjoy him terrorizing his targets which consist largely of low-income migrants, service or retail staff and blue-collar construction workers. Prendergast's wife's illness is treated fairly insensitively even for the 90's and there's a weirdly misogynistic scene where a police officer implies Foster's wife may have demonised her former partner. The confusing encouragement and insistence the film has on portraying Foster's gripes as legitimate are totally at odds with the parts about the racist white man with a machine gun, fascism and the unchecked entitlement of the Boomer generation which is really what this is all about. Unfortunately cited as an inspiration for disenfranchised and psychotic mentalists who believe that cathartically sticking it to the man involves going crazy with firearms, which let's face it is essentially anyone who supports The Second Amendment at this point.
From the Eagle Community Church of Christ in Mont Belvieu, TX. This week we talk about the interpretive journey. This episode carries content warnings for memory loss, multiple realities, blood, gun violence, vomiting, death, mention of mass destruction, insectoid creatures, and a character trapped in an enclosed space. And so the Blackwick Group went its ways: Marn north towards the Telluricists and Duvall to Aldomina; Lyke to a place where he could confront himself fully and Es to aid Dyre Ode and the boy Gasto in destroying the wards of Concentus. Hazard, never officially a member, nevertheless found themself picking up one of the group's oldest threads, and bloodying the nose of a foe each would be happy to wound. So what about Pickman? Well. Pickman stayed, of course. There was work to be done. And it would take her quarry leaving town to get her to do the same… This week on Sangfielle: Six Travelers: Pickman The Almanac of the Heartland Rider Places The First Canton, aka Aldomina the Throne of Dominion: Once a fledgling human empire but nearly 1900 years ago, a minor duke of some great hell led an effort to take it over. And once they did, they pushed what was an already spreading empire even further in that direction. The Second Canton, aka The Pale Magistratum (ma-juh-strah-tuhm): The Second Canton has ordered itself around its Magistrates—holy marshals given weapons blessed by Fulmina, goddess of immediate justice, and the right to use that power as they see it. Sangfielle, the Heartland: Once, it was a breadbasket for the whole Dominion, now this is territory haunted twice: first by a bloody, buried past, and second by an uncanny, indifferent future. Concentus, the Ringed City (kun-CHEN-tus): A vast ringed city surrounding (and containing) Sangfielle. Covered in magical wards, filled with those eager to delve into the heartland or to push back its most fearsome creatures. The gaslit city of Concentus is now the most technologically advanced metropolis of the continent. Facts and Figures Maleister Price (he/him): Sherriff of Blackwick and newest member of the town council. The miners in town would all tell you that Price is the best of them and always has been, but you're not quite sure that you remember that about him. Alekest san Geraint, the Margrave of Tescano, the Porcelain Knight (he/him): If you're a long time reader of this publication, Alekest needs no introduction. You know him from his past adventures, like the slaying of the UnSevered Beast or his solitary stand at Cedartree Station. Maybe you forget some of the details, his angst-filled childhood, the fraught years after his mother's death, his uncanny dreams. Somehow, someway, he has become fast friends with the Shape Knight Pickman. The Visitor: According to the Wrights, a figure came to them from Zevunzolia and opened their eyes to the truth above it all. Organizations Aldomina (al-doh-mee-nah): What once stood as the name of the whole continent is now only the name of the Confederation that runs across the eastern half of the territory surrounding the Sangfielle, currently constituted by three sub-states called Cantons. The Shape Knights: It took people with clear minds, great ingenuity, and implacable spirit to face down and defeat one of the living trains of Sangfielle. In the time since, they've crafted armor from their slain foe, and with that have come to be experts of all things train. They herd, they breach, they redirect. But they haven't yet killed a second. Wrights of the Seventh Sun: A secret society dedicated to the construction of Zevunzolia, whatever the cost. Their motivations are many: Some believe that the Devils ought to have continued climbing whent hey escaped hell, that this was not the paradise earned. Otherse believe that Zevunzolia is telos of telos, the end-cause of all end-causes, and thus will inevitably bring itself into being. And given that, to do anything but aid it is to risk exclusion from it, or worse. This episode carries content warnings for insect infestation, spiders, bodily transformation, gun violence, threat of dissection/forced medical inspection, death. It has been a long journey for Duvall. He first came to the heartland from Aldomina years ago, in search of adventure and glory. But he found only questions of the most existential sort, and a city that would reshape him utterly. Now, years later, he upholds a promise he made to his cousin journeys heads home. This week on Sangfielle: Six Travelers: Duvall The Almanac of the Heartland Rider Places The Sleeping City: Every 13 years, a metropolis wakes with the buzzing sound of life. Do not cross its borders uninvited, especially not when it and its inhabitants are at rest. Upon visiting the City, Blackwick County: From the mines to the lake, the hills to the flats, the town once called Eastern Folly has felt a little more expansive now that it's out of the hard grip of the old curse. It's people aren't perfect, but they've made it through some dark times, and that's more than most can say. The First Canton, aka Aldomina the Throne of Dominion: Once a fledgling human empire but nearly 1900 years ago, a minor duke of some great hell led an effort to take it over. And once they did, they pushed what was an already spreading empire even further in that direction. The Second Canton, aka The Pale Magistratum (ma-juh-strah-tuhm): The Second Canton has ordered itself. Facts and Figures The Red Zephyr: A train what takes on strange character under the moonlight. For a month, it's torn into not only Bell Metal Station, but also any passing train it could reach. But when the Blackwick Group investigated it, they found that the Zephyr was in fact the Shape Knight Fezh, transformed into this new horror by the person they trusted most of all. The Course: There is debate about the true nature of the Heartland's Truth, the power that turned Sangfielle into what it is today. But the Cleavers call it the Course. Part river, part lesson, part direction traveled. Entirely beyond the grasp of mortal minds. Organizations Cleavers: Given how loose and fluid this collection of monster hunters, mystery solvers, and naturalists is, it's hard to call them “an organization.” But when the central belief system of a group is that everything is ever in flux, well, give them the credit of applying that particular ontology to themselves: Whether left to their own devices or joined to a commune of other cleavers, on a long enough timeline, they all become tremendous, monstrous angels. Aldomina (al-doh-mee-nah): What once stood as the name of the whole continent is now only the name of the Confederation that runs across the eastern half of the territory surrounding the Sangfielle, currently constituted by three sub-states called Cantons.
