In this episode of Collecting Issues, Michael and Benjamin break down 8 Billion Genies, the complete 8-issue limited series from Image Comics by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne. What if every person on Earth was suddenly given a genie and one wish? This high-concept comic explores the global and personal chaos that follows—and we're diving into all of it.From the explosive first eight seconds to the profound implications of the final wish, this episode explores themes of desire, power, world-building, and the consequences of getting exactly what you want. The hosts compare it to works by Robert Kirkman and Alan Moore, discuss the structure and visual style of the comic, and reflect on how this series delivers big ideas in a tightly-paced, character-driven format.Topics include:The wish-making mechanic and its implicationsRyan Browne's distinctive art and design of the geniesThe storytelling technique of exponential time jumpsCultural commentary, character arcs, and final twistsPerfect for fans of speculative fiction, creator-owned comics, and smart sci-fi storytelling, this episode offers a thoughtful (and often hilarious) deep dive into one of Image Comics' most creative modern titles.Time Stamps:00:00 Introduction to 8 Billion Genies01:28 Premise of 8 Billion Genies01:51 Comparisons and Commentary02:50 Podcast Promotion and Support05:14 Genies and Their Personalities09:05 Creators and Their Works13:08 World Building and Rules30:26 Character Arcs and Tragedies38:21 The Dougland People and Human Cycles39:00 The Wish-Making Mechanic40:13 The Eternal Witness and World Building42:13 The Zhiang Family Arc44:42 Daisy's Development and Character Arcs47:40 Themes of Desire and Control59:59 The Final Wish and ConclusionFollow the Podcast:Join the Discord and read alongJoin the SubstackFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TiktokWatch us on Youtube Hosted on Acast. Join the Discord and read alongIn this very first From the Archives episode of Collecting Issues, we go back to where it all began with our 2022 discussion of Kraven's Last Hunt, the seminal Spider-Man story by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck. Originally published across The Amazing Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, and Web of Spider-Man in 1987, this dark, introspective arc sees Kraven the Hunter bury Spider-Man alive, assume his identity, and face off against the terrifying sewer-dweller Vermin. We look at the story's gothic almost Russian literature-esque tone, its place in the evolution of superhero comics, and its heavy literary and psychological themes—including a breakdown of its Freudian structure, Blakean symbolism, and bleak commentary on identity and mortality. Plus, we revisit how this tale reshaped Kraven as a complex villain—and how its impact still echoes today.Find out as we awkwardly stumble through one of Marvel's most unforgettable arcs—with all the chaotic podcast energy of our earliest recordings.Topics include:Fearful symmetry and William Blake's “The Tyger”The evolution of Kraven the Hunter1980s New York and its influence on comic storytellingThe black suit and its darker legacyInner monologues galoreCheek touching, grave digging, and sewer monsters00:00 Introduction and Overview03:56 Correcting the Record: Spider-Man Series Clarification04:22 The Unique Structure of Kraven's Last Hunt06:56 Reading Experience and Graphic Novel Format08:03 1980s Vibes and Comparisons to Batman11:46 Freudian Psychology in Spider-Man15:29 The Shocking Suicide in Comics16:36 Kraven's Return and Downgrade22:30 Kraven's Last Hunt: Themes and InspirationsApril's Comic Book Club Pick: Eight Billion Genies by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne!Join the Discord and read alongJoin the SubstackFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TiktokWatch us on Youtube Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to Collecting Issues – the comic book book club podcast – and our first episode of the year (even if it is March, don't @ us). This month, we're diving deep into one of the most iconic and influential superhero stories of all time: Daredevil: Born Again – collecting issues #227 to #233 from the 1986 Daredevil run, written by Frank Miller and drawn by David Mazzucchelli. In this extended breakdown, we take a long, winding look at the dismantling and resurrection of Matt Murdock, the defining portrayal of the Kingpin as a true menace, and the raw, uncompromising misery that Miller lathers onto every page. From gritty noir influences to intense Catholic imagery (and a nun who may or may not be Matt's mammy), we discuss the themes, legacy, and visuals of this masterwork – all while occasionally slandering Foggy Nelson and wondering what the hell Nuke is doing here.We also cover:The real golden age of Daredevil (hint: not the 1930s)Karen Page's tragic arc and women in 1980s comicsThe influence of Miller's crime storytelling and cinematic layoutsA very sweaty Kingpin in Speedos beating up six ladsWhat happens when a Daredevil comic becomes a Captain America comicShared universe highs and lowsAnd why Frank Miller definitely, absolutely, maybe just hates joyPlus, we ask the big questions: Did Miller create the heavy render era or just ride the wave? Is this still the definitive Daredevil story? And why won't Foggy just stop being the worst? This is a bumper episode, so get comfy, roll your eyes at how miserable it all is, and join us for one of the bleakest but most brilliant stories in superhero history. If you've got thoughts on Born Again or just want to shout at us for our hot takes, join the Collecting Issues Discord (link below) and let us know. Our trio discuss each issue in-depth, provide additional context & lore, and talk about how much they enjoyed the comics and if they're necessary for the overall story of The Clone Wars. Clone Wars Conversations continues with Dave, Maff & Mike discussing the final 3 episodes of “The Lost Season”, which features Yoda being guided by Qui-Gon Jinn on a journey to worlds strong in the force, to prepare him for what comes after the Clone Wars! In more detail, Dave, Maff & Mike first talk about how this works as the original ending of TCW series (before season 7 was announced), before delving deeper into these Yoda-centric episodes! As well as the return of Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon, the trio talk about Yoda's foreboding force visions, bizarre force entities & worlds, the Sith world of Moraband/Korriban and the first (& to date only) appearance of Darth Bane on screen, the Rule Of Two, Palpatine's use of Sith rituals & magick and more! Maff also quizzes Dave & Mike on the Jedi council members nearer the end – can you name them all? Episodes featured; Voices, Destiny & Sacrifice. The next 3 releases of CWC will be about the Clone Wars Legacy project, starting with the Darth Maul: Son Of Dathomir comic, followed by the four unfinished episodes of the Utapau Crystal Crisis (watch them here: youtube.com/watch?v=TdaXc2wzwv4&t=100s) and the Dark Disciple novel featuring Quinlan Vos & Asajj Ventress! Are you ready to meet our new favorite henchman, Barfly? Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, Kyle Starks, and Ryan Browne are eager to make introductions. Their new series, spun "from the world of Minor Threats," drills even deeper into the philosophical pursuit initiated by the original run that began two years ago. The lowliest punk in Twilight City has a rich inner life, and he'd love to share it with you if you can set aside your primordial revulsion toward sh*teaters. You don't need to browse long on the rack before encountering another comic deconstructing the superhero genre. Ever since 1986, every creator, it seems, wants to put forth their subversive effort, but Minor Threats avoids the usual cynical choices, embracing Silver Age nonsense and the joys that come with it. Minor Threats and its latest spin-off, Barfly, showcase tremendous humanity, using absurdity to expose genuine pain and triumph. The sincerity marks Minor Threatsas the most exciting superhero universe since Astro City. We're downright chuffed to have Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks back on the podcast. Together, we question the name thrust upon our protagonist, his possible desire to be more than a henchman, and whether those seeking to be masterminds are driven or simply delusional. Also, does Superman go to the bathroom? At least one participant in our conversation has powerful feelings about that. From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly #1 is published by Dark Horse Comics and arrives in comic shops on July 10th. It's written by Jordan Blum, Patton Oswalt, and Kyle Starks. Ryan Browne illustrated and colored it, and Nate Piekos lettered it. Continue this conversation by following Patton Oswalt on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Writer Jordan Blum returns to the podcast to talk about all things Minor Threats - his Dark Horse series co-created by Patton Oswalt and Scott Hepburn - including the newest volume Minor Threats: The Fastest Way Down. But first, how long has it been since Jordan's been on Comics and Chronic? Was Minor Threats partly inspired by a Batman story Patton Oswalt had? Does the creative team of Minor Threats love villains? Did they only expect to create 4 issues of the series? Is Playtime a cooler version of Toyman? Is the title of the comic based on the punk band Minor Threat? How and why did they choose the analogues/amalgams of the characters in Minor Threats? How did Jordan approach crafting these villains? What other comics did Minor Threats remind Jake of? Do the characters of Minor Threats have a lot of heart? Do we feel bad for a lot of these characters? Were any of the characters they created rejected by Dark Horse? Who is the Dino Sorcerer? What makes these characters feel so grounded? How did The Coen Brothers, The Warriors and noir inspire the first volume of Minor Threats? How did Goodfellas and The Godfather Part II inspire Frankie's story going into Minor Threats: The Fastest Way Down? How has Frankie's life changed? How does Snakestalker's story continue in the newest volume? Who is Reptilian? What is Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt's writing process like? How does Scott Hepburn world build with his art? How does Scott create scenes that can only be done on a comic page? Does colorist Ian Herring color pages to look like different eras of comics? Does his colors help Minor Threats feel less computerized and more like a traditional superhero book? Are there any plans to expand Minor Threats outside of comics? How did this team use corner boxes to help tell the story? Who are The Alternates and how did Tim Seeley join the Minor Threats team on this series? How did the Vertigo books of the 90s influence The Alternates? Is Gail Simone writing a Crab Louie one-shot? Are Kyle Starks and Ryan Browne working on a Barfly series? And is Barfly's real name Shiteater? Can we expect some cool new Minor Threats merch soon? Does Jordan already have an ending to Minor Threats in mind? Who is The Searcher? Do Jordan, Patton and Scott have total creative freedom with Minor Threats? Are there other big creators joining the Minor Threats universe? How did Jordan and Patton create a comic con at the LA comic shop Revenge Of? Does Colin Farrell love pinball? Who are some of Jordan's favorite C-listers in comics? Are Jordan and Patton working on a Star Trek story? What makes Jordan and Patton's creative relationship so successful? Does Jordan have some television projects in the works? Writer Patton Oswalt and artist Scott Hepburn join host Aaron Sagers to talk the major comic Minor Threats. In a world of superheroes, sometimes the minor league villains can become queens. And the benchwarmer heroes can become legends. Created by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum and artist Scott Hepburn, and published by Dark Horse Comics, Minor Threats made an impact in the superhero comic world last year, and now the second volume, "The Fastest Way Down," launches April 3. Also, the trade paperback of The Alternates, about B-list superheroes from the pages of Minor Threats who get a taste of greatness, drops April 17. Patton Oswalt and Scott Hepburn discuss their expanding comic universe, as well as the next upcoming spinoff Barfly and where else they might take these characters. And for good measure, we ask Patton about ghosts and his role in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. MORE ABOUT MINOR THREATS Minor Threats is graphic crime drama about superheroes and villains and the last gasp of the colorful innocent days of the silver and bronze age before they're dragged into the grit-soaked modern era. Now, Minor Threats is back for Volume 2, subtitled “The Fastest Way Down” In the first issue, dropping April 3, Frankie Follis AKA the costumed criminal Playtime has won. Twilight City's greatest hero The Insomniac and its greatest villain The Stickman are dead, allowing Frankie to unify the super crook underworld and assert herself as the Queenpin of the Redport neighborhood. But Frankie is feeling the pressure from every side. Rival gangs are challenging her authority, her partner Scalpel is pushing her to legitimize her empire, and the act of murdering The Insomniac has broken something deep inside her. Frankie is about to learn the hard way . . . heavy is the head that wears the supervillain crown. But wait, there's more from the world of Minor Threats: Spinning out of the world of Minor Threats is The Alternates, a tale of costumed underdogs--featuring a support group for superheroes, who are struggling to reclaim their mediocre lives in this world after tasting their true potential in another dimension called The Ledge. That's written by Oswalt, Blum and Tim Seeley with art by Tess Fowler, Christopher Mitten and covers by Hepburn. AND Dark Horse Comics is buzzing with some exciting news: the world of Minor Threats continues expanding with a new spinoff series, Barfly! Comic book legend Kyle Starks (Where Monsters Lie) joins Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum on writing duties on a feel-good, coming-of-age series about an insect monster-man searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Ryan Browne, co-creator of the critically-acclaimed series Eight Billion Genies, will provide artwork for Barfly, with letters handled by Nate Piekos (Minor Threats). The first issue will also feature a main cover art by Minor Threats co-creator Scott Hepburn, with three variant covers featuring art by Browne, Martín Morazzo, Dan Hipp (1:10 ratio), and one more to be revealed at a later date. The series is set to begin this July. _______________________________________________________________ If you like Talking Strange, please subscribe, leave a nice review, and share with your friends.
