Whilst enjoying the multitude of styles that compose the repertoire of jazz today, many fans have long decried the disappearance of Bebop in favour of crossover music and other listener-to-listener styles. There is some evidence though that things may be changing, and one piece of that evidence is the emergence of some bands playing music closer to bop or hard bop style. One such is the British quintet Five Way Split, and Hot Box 152 samples tracks from their new album, Modus Operandi, alongside such classic hard boppers as Horace Silver and Art Blakey. On this deeply irresponsible episode of Coastal Idiots, Katherine and Shane welcome Logan Guntzelman—newly passed at the The Comedy Store—and immediately subject her to a psychological war crime disguised as a bit. A heating cushion has Logan questioning her sanity while an intermittent fart machine ensures no one feels safe, physically or emotionally. The result? Pure, unfiltered chaos, nervous breakdown energy, and a prank that somehow keeps escalating long after it should've stopped. It's hilarious. It's cruel. It's exactly what you signed up for. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Coastal Idiots is a weekly comedy podcast where each week your host Shane and Katherine are joined by a friend or two where they do something very stupid and hilarious. Follow Katherine and Shane so they have a reason to keep going. The show is produced by the marvelous Keida Mascaro. Some of the art on the walls by the great Perry Shall. Music by Gymshorts and Alex Orange Drink. Your favorite idiots are now available wherever you listen to podcasts! The best ice seasons are not always the ones with the most chaos, they are the ones that run smooth from first hut to last pullout. We're back with Donny Crowder of Hotbox Huts to debrief a Lake Simcoe winter that started early, stayed stable late, and gave his crew something rare: time. Time to stage “Hogtown” properly, time to avoid panic days, and time to connect with clients one-on-one so families leave with more than just fish photos. We get into what showed up under the holes this year, from big early-season perch to walleye talk and the odd sightings that make you question what you thought you knew about Simcoe. Donny also breaks down why underwater fishing cameras can be a game-changer for stationary ice fishing, especially for kids and new anglers who learn faster when they can actually see the bite and fish behaviour in real time. Then the conversation goes deep on ice safety. Donny explains how heavy snow, melt cycles, shoreline runoff, and springs can turn a “good” year into a constant monitoring job. He shares how measuring core ice temperature helps predict breakup, and why candled ice can look walkable while being structurally ready to separate when sun and water do their work.Off the ice, Donny walks us through his hundred-acre conservation-minded property, a thriving duck pond, semi-guided waterfowl hunts, and the realities of regenerative farming and making maple, birch, and silver maple syrup the old-school way. If you care about guided ice fishing in Ontario, hardwater safety, conservation, and building a life around the land, this one delivers. Subscribe, share the episode with a fishing buddy, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comEric Swalwell did not have a good week. Actually, last week was very bad, when articles hit CNN and The San Francisco Chronicle within hours of each other, a one-two punch alleging a series of unsavory acts, including sexual assault. Then earlier this week, another woman accused him of drugging, choking, and raping her. She's filed a criminal complaint. Swalwell has ended his run for governor, resigned from Congress and possibly public life. But what went on back there? The downfall was so fast, it's worth slowing down the tape, especially if (like Sarah) last week happens to be when you learned a person named Eric Swalwell existed. Nancy and Sarah's conversation includes a discussion of drinking and consent, what we know (and don't know) about roofies, and the strange impulse to return to a bad sexual situation and try to wrest back control. Also discussed:* Ft. Worth is the Brooklyn of Dallas* Nancy confuses what she heard on The Fifth Column with real life* If Katie Porter is the best California can do …* PSA: Don't fuck the interns* “sexual revictimization cycle” * Nancy offers a translation: If he has not seen you in five years and says he cannot stop thinking about you, he wants in your pants * “Will you help me out?”

Welcome to Hot Box 149. We begin with a sparkling new release on Blue Note from the young American pianist Paul Cornish. Hailing from Texas, Cornish was a finalist in the prestigious Herbie Hancock International Piano Competition three years ago, and has already shared the stage with many of the leading figures in jazz today. From there, we move into the distinctive voice of Cécile McLorin Salvant, with two selections from her Oh Snap album, before turning to the richly textured harp work of Brandee Younger on Gadabout Season. We close out the programme with two beautifully crafted pieces from Irish guitarist Louis Stewart, drawn from his album Joyce Notes. With social media platforms becoming less reliable for discovery, the classic web ring is making a comeback as a way for creators to promote each other directly. Along the way, the guys discuss audience targeting, technical setup, and why the success of a web ring depends more on community alignment than on code. Hot Box 148 is going to be both sad and joyful since we now remember the extraordinary drummer Jack DeJohnette who died at the end of October aged 83. He was a native of Chicago and certainly could lay a claim to being the greatest of all jazz drummers. Immensely influential in the overall direction of drumming in jazz and, by any standards, extraordinarily versatile. You only have to rattle off the names of the musicians he worked with to emphasise that point, take Miles Davis for example, then Bill Evans, John Surman, Keith Jarrett and Pat Matheney, really ticking most of the boxes in the post-bop era. So, let's listen to some of that music while we pay tribute to an extraordinary musician. This episode of The Hot Box has a distinctly retro feel, as we celebrate the lives and talents of two remarkable female jazz singers who recently passed away. We're remembering the incomparable British singer Dame Cleo Laine, and the lesser-known but deeply respected American vocalist Sheila Jordan. A fresh, piping hot episode of Altmania straight out of the Hot Box. We're looking at another Jonathan Demme-penned, Joe Viola-directed film from New World Pictures - 1972's THE HOT BOX. We discuss Corman's core (no pun intended) mission for filmmaking: boobs and action. The ways he allowed filmmakers to imbue exploitation films with serious, real-life stuff while attempting to gel it with that entertainment factor. We chat about the New World crew heading out to the Philippines for a bunch of productions (another of which we'll talk about next week), throwing stones at rats, corrupt governments, guns on planes. Then we talk about this funny little film, its sometimes tonal imabalances; and ultimately how, more often than not, it tends to speak on the right side of history and about violence against imperial oppression - thanks in part to Jonathan Demme at the typewriter. We close out #PrisonMarch 2: Second Offense with an interview with someone who there at New World from the very beginning: editor Barbara Pokras! After graduating from USC (where she went to school with Dan O'Bannon with whom she would work on RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Barbara found her way to Roger Corman's newly-formed New World Pictures, where she went to work dubbing voices and assisting director Stephanie Rothman on New World's first ever movie, THE STUDENT NURSES. From there, Barbara worked on a variety of movies Roger shot in the Phillipines, like NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN, THE HOT BOX, and THE BIG BUST-OUT! We discuss what it was like to work on those movies, how Barbara worked her way up to joining the Editor's Union and landing a job at Cop Rock, the short-lived police procedural musical, and why it was her favorite job. We also discuss I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND, TOO HOT TO HANDLE, and why Wonder Woman was not her favorite project to work on. We could not have been more thrilled to talk with Barbara Pokras, one of Corman's original film school graduates, and we know you'll love our discussion as much as we did! And when you're done, don't forget to pick up her book, Feeding Mrs. Moskowitz, here.
