Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose

For our first episode, host Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley and guest, Sgt. 1st Class Astin Muse, focus on an important topic: health care. The two discuss options available to U.S. Army Soldiers and their families and how access to free, comprehensive health care has impacted their lives.

In episode #2 of "Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose," #USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with Staff Sgt. Archie "ARCHIEzzle" Masibay and Future Soldier John Quintos. The three discuss Archie's claim to social media fame, using the virtual space to educate Future Soldiers and their families, Future Soldier training and what they can expect when enlisting in the U.S. Army.

In episode #3 of "Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose," USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with PJ Hill, a former professional basketball player and current financial planner with Wells Fargo. They discuss leadership, the value of pursuing a higher education, overcoming adversity, and the importance of diversity and inclusion. PJ gives an outsider’s perspective how he sees the U.S. Army and basketball helping young Americans achieve success.

In episode #4 of "Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose," #USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with the Drill Sergeant of the Year from the Fires Center of Excellence at Fort Sill, OK, Drill Sergeant William Tazwell and Basic Trainee Private First Class Matthew Pellouchoud. They’ll talk about the COVID safety measures put in place to keep our Soldiers safe, day to day life while at Army Basic Training and lots more.

In episode #5 of "Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose," #USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley lets everyone know that the command is on Holiday Block Leave and wishes everyone a Happy Holidays.

In episode #6 of "Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose," #USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with an instructor from the U.S. Army’s Medical Center of Excellence at Joint Base San Antonio, Sgt. 1st Class Jordan Williams and Combat Medic Trainee Specialist Asia Enger. They discuss COVID safety protocols put in place to keep everyone safe, day to day life while in Advanced Individual Training, the length of the training and the knowledge and technical skills required to become a Combat Medic.

In Episode #7 of “Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose,” USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with two Army Reserve Soldiers, Sgts. 1st Class Alisha Williams and Danny Spurlock. They discuss the difference between serving full-time in the active Army or part-time in the Army Reserve. They also talk about scholarship opportunities for those wanting to attend college and become an officer.

In episode #8 of “Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose,” USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with Tony Castillo, the Education Services Officer for the U.S. Army’s largest education center, located at Fort Bragg, N.C. CSM Foley and Mr. Castillo have an exciting conversation discussing the Army’s robust education system and how it helps prepare Soldiers for success throughout their careers.

In episode 9 of "Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose," the focus is on diversity and inclusion in the U.S. Army. USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with Sgt. 1st Class Trevor Boothe, an instructor at the U.S. Army Recruiting and Retention College at Fort Knox, Kentucky, about personal experiences as a black Soldier in the U.S. Army and his views on the Army’s efforts to increase diversity and inclusion among the ranks.

In episode 10 of “Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose,” we continue our focus on diversity in the U.S. Army. USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley speaks with 1st Sgt. Danielle Balson, the first sergeant for Tulsa, Oklahoma, Army Recruiting Company. In honor of Women’s History Month, Balson discusses her successful career as a Soldier and leader in the U.S. Army.

In episode 11 of “Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose,” we highlight the medical recruiting program, which includes bringing in Soldiers for everything from physicians, dentists and nurses to specialties like physical and occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and the administrative staff that supports all those functions. USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley and Maj. Britain Seaburn, who leads the medical recruiting efforts in Louisville, Kentucky, discuss recruiting for all those professions, plus offering scholarships, like the Health Professions Scholarship Program, to applicants to obtain those degrees with a service commitment following graduation.

In episode 12 of “Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose,” we highlight the U.S. Army Special Forces, Green Berets are trained to perform several key missions -- each meant to be performed effectively and efficiently in a small-team operational structure. USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley and J.J. a Green Beret Engineer Sergeant will, discuss the unique role of the U.S. Army Special Forces, the training and how to prepare to become a Green Beret and what their role is with the Army’s important mission to fight and win America’s wars.

Rangers lead the way! In episode 13 of “Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose,” we highlight the U.S. Army Rangers and the 75th Ranger Regiment. Rangers are trained to perform several key missions – such as direct action raids and airfield seizures. USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley and Sgt. Derek Wagner, a Ranger with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, discuss the role of Rangers, the training they experience, and how to prepare for the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program.

In episode 14 of “Behind the Greens: Serving with Purpose,” USAREC’s Command Sgt. Maj. John Foley sits down with Maj. Gen. Kevin Vereen, commanding general for U.S. Army Recruiting Command, to discuss the second annual Army National Hiring Days, happening May 10-June 14. They discuss the requirements to serve, the enlistment process and options, misperceptions about joining the Army, and Treves’ personal story of joining through the Army Acquired Skills Program.
