This will be a conversation about how, in the military, individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together under a shared purpose to contribute to something bigger than themselves and serve their nation. The contributions of immigrants who serve and swear allegiance to the nation are recognized and appreciated. So for a little background, non-U.S. citizens may be eligible to apply for naturalization, which is the process by which U.S. citizenship is granted to a lawful permanent resident after meeting the requirements established by Congress, as defined by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. For many, joining the U.S. military offers a fast track to becoming a U.S. citizen. In this episode, Technical Sgt. Timothy Thorpe, a Massachusetts Air National Guard recruiter, and his recruit, Airman Daniel Olubodun will join us to talk about their experience. Airman Olubodun is native to Nigeria, was granted U.S. citizenship during Basic Military Training. For more information about U.S. Citizenship through military service, reach out to a local Air National Guard recruiter or Military One Source has some incredible resources for you to check out. Enlistment in the U.S. military has been in continuous decline since its peak during the Vietnam War. Evolving societal attitudes towards military service, as well as demographic shifts and competition from the private sector have drawn many young people away from serving. One major hurdle is the diminishing pool of eligible candidates, with factors such as obesity rates, educational requirements and drug use impacting the recruitment pool. We'll talk about what it means for a country to struggle to staff its all-volunteer military and the lengths recruiters are going to fill its ranks in California and nationwide. Guests: Beth Asch, senior economist and PhD in economics, Rand Corporation Roberto Camacho, race, equity, and social justice reporter
3 Likud MKs have sent a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu attacking the military draft bill, which provides for widespread exemptions for the Ultra-Orthodox from military service. Their intention was not only to say no, but to also propose a solution, based on the understanding that in the long-term, the logic of placing the burden of military service on the same segment of the population is wrong. KAN's Mark Weiss asked Yehoshua Pfeffer, a Jerusalem community rabbi and founder of the IYUN Institute, how the ultra-Orthodox community has responded to the growing calls for a more equitable sharing of the burden of military service. ENLISTMENT by Jodi M. SwansonMy military career started out as a way for me to grow, to expand my opportunities, and leave my little rural hometown in Wisconsin. Who am I trying to fool? I was a broke farm girl trying to get an education. Everything after that just happened. But you're not here to read my sappy teenage memoirs. You're here to find out about "them". How I was selected. And what happenedAs a prior member of the US Air Force, Marie Peterson is reminded daily of what she misses being active duty versus her current civilian life. News stories and the threat of a comet stir her sense of patriotic duty and make her think on going back into the service. Then a stranger with military credentials, who knows things of Marie's past, offers her a chance to go back as active duty. But the things he knows and shows her has Marie wonder what is really going on. Is it just going back in, or is it a different calling. Heed the call to serve. Read and sign the dotted line of ENLISTMENT. Recipient of the Hollywood Book Review "Excellent Merit Star"About Jodi M. Swanson I'm a prior USAF veteran, Boise State Alumni, proud single mom of two great kids for many years. Weekly updates: Jks showcase, and the military announcement monopolized the week.
Pondering the hypothetical scenario of an attack on American soil, it's unsettling to question whether the citizens of this great nation would rise up in its defense. Recent global events, such as Hamas' assault on Israel, have shockingly elicited sympathy from a portion of the younger population towards those at odds with our nation, providing a potential clue to this riddle. A curious trend has emerged on platforms like TikTok where younger users echo the beliefs and propaganda of controversial figures like Osama bin Laden, who orchestrated the tragic 9/11 attacks. Moreover, anti-American sentiment seems to be festering on college campuses, sparking a concerning question: 'Would they stand up for their homeland in crisis?' Based on a recent study, it appears that a sizable majority might watch from the sidelines. Echelon Insights, a reputable research firm, conducted a poll which uncovered that an astonishing 72% of Americans would refrain from volunteering in a combat scenario. This striking statistic surfaces amidst reports that the respective branches of the U.S. military face challenges reaching their recruitment objectives - a possible indication of a rising tide of indifference to serving in the armed forces. Another unsettling survey result revealed that nearly one-third of the youngest adult demographic, those aged 18 to 29, would choose capitulation over defending their homeland. Unraveling the reasons behind such a stance isn't overly complex. Education institutions have unfortunately become saturated with viewpoints that criticize American ideals and principles. Coupling this with a culture that seeks to shelter the young from uncomfortable realities, the result is a generation disinclined towards personal sacrifice for the common good.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Season 5 of Alopecia Life. In this first episode, our guest is Dr. Sherri Barrow. Each season, around this time of year we talk about back-to-school and how we can make the school experience a good one for our kids. Looking back as a kid who lived with alopecia areata since the age of 7, I know I needed more support in school. I'm sure many of you would agree based on your own experience - there was very little to no support. Some things have changed since then. There are more resources and ways to thrive in a school environment while living with alopecia, and Sherri is here to talk to us about 504 plans here in the US. She is extremely qualified, and her advice of exactly what to ask for can be the difference between success or a prolonged challenge while figuring out what our kids need. A little more about Sherri: "Sherri Barrow has more than 20 years of experience in business, training, and education. She attended Purdue University for her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She holds a master's degree in School Counseling from IUPUI and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Capella University. In addition, has her LMHC in Indiana. This makes her uniquely qualified to empower scholars to find and develop their talents while being a strong, compassionate servant leader to students, families, and educators she is blessed to serve. She believes that all students can be successful if they are given an opportunity to explore their passion and purpose, which becomes their why.Sherri is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the School Counseling Master program at Ball State University. She helps future school counselors develop their skills and knowledge to impact youth nationwide and abroad. She previously served in a college and career readiness role as the Future Center Coordinator in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS). The Future Center is an initiative within each of the 4 IPS reinvented high schools where students and alumni access programming to prepare them for IPS' 3 E's (Enrollment, Enlistment, Employment). These centers bridge the gap for equitable services for our youth in Indianapolis.Sherri is also a motivational speaker who shares her message of resiliency and forgiveness with audiences seeking more significant outcomes and successes in their daily lives."If you have questions about 504's after this episode, please feel free to reach out. There a lot of options, just as Sherri mentioned, and we'd love to help you find solutions.Support the showAlopecia Life provides free resources for school and home education, including a growing list of alopecia books, education videos on YouTube, links to support groups within the US, UK, Canada and more.
