This Sunday, Pastor Ralph continued our FOLLOW series with a teaching on Jesus' invitation to true rest from Matthew 11:25–12:21 He began with John the Baptist, sitting in prison and asking Jesus, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" It was a reminder that even faithful disciples can struggle when Jesus doesn't meet their expectations. Pastor Ralph suggested that much of our restlessness begins there. We carry burdens Jesus never asked us to carry because we've forgotten who He is. Against that backdrop, Jesus offers one of His most tender invitations, "Come to me... and you will find rest." Rather than promising an easier life, He invites us into a different way of living—one where we come to Him, take His yoke, and learn His way. The result isn't the absence of difficulty, but the deep rest that comes from walking closely with the gentle and humble King.

San Ignacio de Loyola Lc 14,25-33 14,25 Junto con Jesús iba un gran gentío, y él, dándose vuelta, les dijo: 14,26 «Cualquiera que venga a mí y no me ame más que a su padre y a su madre, a su mujer y a sus hijos, a sus hermanos y hermanas, y hasta a su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo. 14,27 El que no carga con su cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo. 14,28 ¿Quién de ustedes, si quiere edificar una torre, no se sienta primero a calcular los gastos, para ver si tiene con qué terminarla? 14,29 No sea que una vez puestos los cimientos, no pueda acabar y todos los que lo vean se rían de él, diciendo: 14,30 'Este comenzó a edificar y no pudo terminar'. 14,31 ¿Y qué rey, cuando sale en campaña contra otro, no se sienta antes a considerar si con diez mil hombres puede enfrentar al que viene contra él con veinte mil? 14,32 Por el contrario, mientras el otro rey está todavía lejos, envía una embajada para negociar la paz. 14,33 De la misma manera, cualquiera de ustedes que no renuncie a todo lo que posee, no puede ser mi discípulo. «Todo para mayor Gloria de Dios» San Ignacio nació en 1491 en el castillo de Loyola, en Guipúzcoa, norte de España, cerca de los montes Pirineos que están en el límite con Francia. Su padre Bertrán De Loyola y su madre Marina Sáenz, de familias muy distinguidas, tuvieron once hijos: ocho varones y tres mujeres. El más joven de todos fue Ignacio. El nombre que le pusieron en el bautismo fue Iñigo. Entró a la carrera militar, pero en 1521, a la edad de 30 años, siendo ya capitán, fue gravemente herido mientras defendía el Castillo de Pamplona. Al ser herido su jefe, la guarnición del castillo capituló ante el ejército francés. Los vencedores lo enviaron a su Castillo de Loyola a que fuera tratado de su herida. Le hicieron tres operaciones en la rodilla, dolorosísimas, y sin anestesia; pero no permitió que lo atasen ni que nadie lo sostuviera. Durante las operaciones no prorrumpió ni una queja. Los médicos se admiraban. Para que la pierna operada no le quedara más corta le amarraron unas pesas al pie y así estuvo por semanas con el pie en alto, soportando semejante peso. Sin embargo quedó cojo para toda la vida. A pesar de esto Ignacio tuvo durante toda su vida un modo muy elegante y fino para tratar a toda clase de personas. Lo había aprendido en la Corte en su niñez. Mientras estaba en convalecencia pidió que le llevaran novelas de caballería, llenas de narraciones inventadas e imaginarias. Pero su hermana le dijo que no tenía más libros que «La vida de Cristo» y el «Año Cristiano», o sea la historia del santo de cada día. Y le sucedió un caso muy especial. Antes, mientras leía novelas y narraciones inventadas, en el momento sentía satisfacción pero después quedaba con un sentimiento horrible de tristeza y frustración. En cambio ahora al leer la vida de Cristo y las Vidas de los santos sentía una alegría inmensa que le duraba por días y días. Esto lo fue impresionando profundamente. Y mientras leía las historias de los grandes santos pensaba: «¿Y por qué no tratar de imitarlos? Si ellos pudieron llegar a ese grado de espiritualidad, ¿por qué no lo voy a lograr yo? ¿Por qué no tratar de ser como San Francisco, Santo Domingo, etc.? Estos hombres estaban hechos del mismo barro que yo. ¿Por qué no esforzarme por llegar al grado que ellos alcanzaron?». Y después se iba a cumplir en él aquello que decía Jesús: «Dichosos los que tienen un gran deseo de ser santos, porque su deseo se cumplirá» (Mt. 5,6), y aquella sentencia de los psicólogos: «Cuidado con lo que deseas, porque lo conseguirás». Mientras se proponía seriamente convertirse, una noche se le apareció Nuestra Señora con su Hijo Santísimo. La visión lo consoló inmensamente. Desde entonces se propuso no dedicarse a servir a gobernantes de la tierra sino al Rey del cielo. Apenas terminó su convalecencia se fue en peregrinación al famoso Santuario de la Virgen de Monserrat. Allí tomó el serio propósito de dedicarse a hacer penitencia por sus pecados. Cambió sus lujosos vestidos por los de un pordiosero, se consagró a la Virgen Santísima e hizo confesión general de toda su vida. Y se fue a un pueblecito llamado Manresa, a 15 kilómetros de Monserrat a orar y hacer penitencia, allí estuvo un año. Cerca de Manresa había una cueva y en ella se encerraba a dedicarse a la oración y a la meditación. Allá se le ocurrió la idea de los Ejercicios Espiritales, que tanto bien iban a hacer a la humanidad. Después de unos días en los cuales sentía mucho gozo y consuelo en la oración, empezó a sentir aburrimiento y cansancio por todo lo que fuera espiritual. A esta crisis de desgano la llaman los sabios "la noche oscura del alma". Es un estado dificultoso que cada uno tiene que pasar para que se convenza de que los consuelos que siente en la oración no se los merece, sino que son un regalo gratuito de Dios. Luego le llegó otra enfermedad espiritual muy fastidiosa: los escrúpulos. O sea el imaginarse que todo es pecado. Esto casi lo lleva a la desesperación. Pero iba anotando lo que le sucedía y lo que sentía y estos datos le proporcionaron después mucha habildad para poder dirigir espiritualmente a otros convertidos y según sus propias experiencias poderles enseñar el camino de la santidad. Allí orando en Manresa adquirió lo que se llama "Discreción de espíritus", que consiste en saber determinar qué es lo que le sucede a cada alma y cuáles son los consejos que más necesita, y saber distinguir lo bueno de lo malo. A un amigo suyo le decía después: "En una hora de oración en Manresa aprendí más a dirigir almas, que todo lo que hubiera podido aprender asistiendo a universidades". En 1523 se fue en peregrinación a Jerusalén, pidiendo limosna por el camino. Todavía era muy impulsivo y un día casi ataca a espada a uno que hablaba mal de la religión. Por eso le aconsejaron que no se quedara en Tierra Santa donde había muchos enemigos del catolicismo. Después fue adquiriendo gran bondad y paciencia. A los 33 años empezó como estudiante de colegio en Barcelona, España. Sus compañeros de estudio eran mucho más jóvenes que él y se burlaban mucho. El toleraba todo con admirable paciencia. De todo lo que estudiaba tomaba pretexto para elevar su alma a Dios y adorarlo. Después pasó a la Universidad de Alcalá. Vestía muy pobremente y vivía de limosna. Reunía niños para enseñarles religión; hacía reuniones de gente sencilla para tratar temas de espiritualidad, y convertía pecadores hablandoles amablemente de lo importante que es salvar el alma. Lo acusaron injustamente ante la autoridad religiosa y estuvo dos meses en la cárcel. Después lo declararon inocente, pero había gente que lo perseguía. El consideraba todos estos sufrimientos como un medio que Dios le proporcionaba para que fuera pagando sus pecados. Y exclamaba: "No hay en la ciudad tantas cárceles ni tantos tormentos como los que yo deseo sufrir por amor a Jesucristo". Se fue a Paris a estudiar en su famosa Universidad de La Sorbona. Allá formó un grupo con seis compañeros que se han hecho famosos porque con ellos fundó la Compañía de Jesús. Ellos son: Pedro Fabro, Francisco Javier, Laínez, Salnerón, Simón Rodríguez y Nicolás Bobadilla. Recibieron doctorado en aquella universidad y daban muy buen ejemplo a todos. Los siete hicieron votos o juramentos de ser puros, obedientes y pobres, el día 15 de Agosto de 1534, fiesta de la Asunción de María. Se comprometieron a estar siempre a las órdenes del Sumo Pontífice para que él los emplease en lo que mejor le pareciera para la gloria de Dios. Se fueron a Roma y el Papa Pablo III les recibió muy bien y les dio permiso de ser ordenados sacerdotes. Ignacio, que se había cambiado por ese nombre su nombre antiguo de Íñigo, esperó un año desde el día de su ordenación hasta el día de la celebración de su primera misa, para prepararse lo mejor posible a celebrarla con todo fervor. San Ignacio de Loyola se dedicó en Roma a predicar Ejercicios Espirituales y a catequizar al pueblo. Sus compañeros se dedicaron a dictar clases en universidades y colegios y a dar conferencias espirituales a toda clase de personas. Se propusieron como principal oficio enseñar la religión a la gente. En 1540 el Papa Pablo III aprobó su comunidad llamada "Compañía de Jesús" o "Jesuitas". El Superior General de la nueva comunidad fue San Ignacio hasta su muerte. En Roma pasó todo el resto de su vida. Era tanto el deseo que tenía de salvar almas que exclamaba: "Estaría dispuesto a perder todo lo que tengo, y hasta que se acabara mi comunidad, con tal de salvar el alma de un pecador". Fundó casas de su congregación en España y Portugal. Envió a San Francisco Javier a evangelizar el Asia. De los jesuitas que envió a Inglaterra, 22 murieron martirizados por los protestantes. Sus dos grandes amigos Laínez y Salmerón fueron famosos sabios que dirigieron el Concilio de Trento. A San Pedro Canisio lo envió a Alemania y este santo llegó a ser el más célebre catequista de aquél país. Recibió como religioso jesuita a San Francisco de Borja que era rico político, gobernador, en España. San Ignacio escribió más de 6 mil cartas dando consejos espirituales. El Colegio que San Ignacio fundó en Roma llegó a ser modelo en el cual se inspiraron muchísimos colegios más y ahora se ha convertido en la célebre Universidad Gregoriana. Los jesuitas fundados por San Ignacio llegaron a ser los más sabios adversarios de los protestantes y combatieron y detuvieron en todas partes al protestantismo. Les recomendaba que tuvieran mansedumbre y gran respeto hacia el adversario pero que se presentaran muy instruidos para combatirlos. El deseaba que el apóstol católico fuera muy instruido. El libro más famoso de San Ignacio de Loyola se titula: «Ejercicios Espirituales» y es lo mejor que se ha escrito acerca de como hacer bien los santos ejercicios. En todo el mundo es leído y practicado este maravilloso libro. Duró 15 años escribiéndolo. Su lema era: "Todo para mayor gloria de Dios". Y a ello dirigía todas sus acciones, palabras y pensamientos: A que Dios fuera más conocido, más amado y mejor obedecido. En los 15 años que San Ignacio de Loyola dirigió a la Compañía de Jesús, esta pasó de siete socios a más de mil. A todos y cada uno trataba de formarlos muy bien espiritualmente. Como casi cada año se enfermaba y después volvía a obtener la curación, cuando le vino la última enfermedad nadie se imaginó que se iba a morir, y murió subitamente el 31 de julio de 1556 a la edad de 65 años. En 1622 el Papa lo declaró Santo y después Pío XI lo declaró Patrono de los Ejercicios Espirituales en todo el mundo. Su comunidad de Jesuitas es la más numerosa en la Iglesia Católica. This week, Pastor Ralph continued our FOLLOW series with a teaching on Jesus' command to "seek first the kingdom of God." He began with a simple observation—everyone is seeking something. The real question is what sits at the center of our lives. Working through Matthew's Gospel, Pastor Ralph showed that before Jesus ever calls people to seek the Kingdom, He reveals the King. Pastor Ralph quoted "the only way to dispossess the heart of an old affection is by the expulsive power of a new one." Lasting change comes less from trying harder than from discovering a greater love. As Jesus becomes the center, everything else begins to find its proper place.
