En el verano de 1936 la tensión política en a las calles era máxima, El día 12 de julio de 1936, fue asesinado por extremistas de derechas el teniente de la Guardia de Asalto, José del Castillo, un conocido militante socialista. Esta muerte desencadenó que al día siguiente fuera asesinado al día siguiente por militantes socialistas y compañeros de Castillo, el diputado de Renovación Español, José Calvo Sotelo. El asesinato del político conservador provocó una gran indignación en la sociedad española y en especial en militares. Este fue el caso del general Francisco Franco Bahamonde, quien había anunciado unos días antes al general Mola que no participaría en el levantamiento militar que este estaba organizando. Los militares confabulados en dar un golpe de Estado a la república, habían alquilado un avión, el Drangon Rapide, para trasladar a Franco desde Canarias, donde estaba destinado hasta el Protectorado Español en Marruecos, para que se hiciera cargo del ejército de África, el más poderoso de España y llegara a la península para conseguir una rápida victoria al ejército republicano. El levantamiento militar se debía producir primero en África, concretamente el 18 de julio de 1936. Sin embargo, los militares fieles a la república lo descubrieron y tuvo que ser adelantado al 17 de julio de 1936. Cuando Franco aterrizó en Tetuán, los levantados le entregaron el mando del ejército de África. Había comenzado la guerra civil española
