Ep. 16: The Stressful Scent of Men!

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2019

In one of the most contentious episodes ever recorded, we talk about the documentary Follow Your Nose with the hilarious comedian/writer Andrew Briedis! We discussed scent and sense of smell as it relates to: breast milk during a creepy hot-or-not experiment; weapons for war; Capt. James T. Kirk and mice; sperm’s preferred flower; and good life experiences with poop. Christina and Dory argue a lot and you’ll just have to listen to find out if they’re still friends!!

IT’S OUR FIRST DAVID ATTENBOROUGH DOC!!! *BRRRATBBRBRRRRRBRRRRAT ALL OF THE AIRHORNS* We watched Hummingbirds: Jeweled Messengers on Amazon Primo with Docu-Nope all-star Neil Anand. We learned a whole buttload of new stuff, like how Big Daddy Atty a.k.a. Nap-enborough has too many knighthoods, why Christina luvs ASMR, how we would use our long, skinny hummingbird tongues for good and/or evil, and whether or not Neil pee’d in his doctor’s face as a child. Yes, we talked about hummingbirds too, duhhh. P.S. If you don’t listen to this episode, it means you hate nature!!!!

Ep. 14: Penis Juice Injections For Everyone!

We’re back, heeeenny! After spending some time in Uranus for the holidays, we recorded a brand new episode with the ever impressive and enlightening Dr. Chelsea Catania, president of MIT’s Microbiome Club *and* Dory’s childhood comrade. This one is all about HORMONES, specifically The Fantastical World of Hormones that we watched on Amazon Prime, which led us to ponder things like: why the heck would you cut your balls off to sing opera music? + how much penis juice does a guinea pig have in its testicles? + what makes the urine of diabetics taste sweet? + Dr. versus Prof., which is more impressive???? Listen and all will be revealed!

Ep. 13: J-WOWW’s Perfume Might Kill You!

Do you care about chemicals? Well you should, because they will destroy your entire life!!!!! That’s the thesis statement for the documentary Stink!, which we watched on Netflix. There are apparently toxic chemicals all around us that companies keep secret, but what we talk about with our all-star guest, Marty Morales from The Yas Podcast, is what cologne Jesus wore, who are douche bags who make/wear Axe, and why the heck J-WOWW is even a part of this thing. We promise this episode is funny even though the subject matter is not.

if you’re curious at all about algorithms, or you have a wicked case of insomnia, def watch this episode’s documentary, The Secret Rules of Modern Living: Algorithms, on Netflix. It sparked a wide range of mind-tingling conversations about things like Evil Jeff Besos/Powder from the movie Powder, organized crime within the maths community, and the impending robot revolution (which we get a surprise taste of, thanks to a possessed Siri). Official Docu-Nope all-star Neil Anand joins us once again to break it all down, and also tell us about his great progress selling bootleg Docu-Nope merch.

Mike! Liza! Valerie! Moon Rooster! We got to know this posse of poultry way too well in the film The Natural History of the Chicken on Amazon Prime. With this documentary, it’s not so much a question of are these people are fornicating with chickens, it’s how many of them are fornicating with chickens? Are some of these people possessed by some sort of chicken demon? Do some of them secretly/openly wish they were a chicken? Our guest, comedian Aby James, compared the viewing of this doc to when she was in and out of consciousness with H1N1, and that is quite a review! She also gave us great insight into working animal-actors and how she faced her animal abuse phobia head-on for this podcast (for which we are eternally grateful).

What happens in the Large Hadron Collider, STAYS in the Large Hadron Collider, amiright winkwinkwinkwinkwink? We watched Particle Fever on Amazon Prime, and it was a real SMASHING time (it’s funny because it’s all about smashing atoms together and the kooky characters who do the smashing). Filmmaker and all-around human man Phil Nolan (from the Boy If You Don’t podcast) joins us on a journey of exploration of ourselves, our basic understanding of the world, and why in the heck particle physicists aren’t able to find a flattering haircut.

If you don’t know shit about fine art but would like to know more, this episode is for you! Sure, we learned about *some* stuff while watching Rubens: An Extra Large Story on Amazon Prime, like how he had child brides and was #TeamCatholicism and loved to paint fleshy, soft lady tummies. However, we learned even more stuff from our friend and guest Prof. Eva Molcard, PhD., who might as well be named Mizz Snopes cuz she fact-checked the shit outta in this documentary and its host, Waldemar. Like Picasso, you might not be keen on the artist Peter Paul Rubens — heck, you might not even knew he existed before reading this — but you’ll likely have a different opinion about him after hearing what we have to say! #Art!!!!!!

“Don’t call me unless blackface is involved” was one of the many weird thoughts we had while watching ‘The Brothers Warner’ on Amazon Prime. This doc is all about, you guessed it, nazis! And child brides! And bad blood between family members, especially within The Warner Brothers family! Rapper/comedian/DJ and “entertainnoir” Donwill graced us with his presence, his Randy Newman impression, and his thoughts on this film that he may or may not have watched, and it was a real swell time indeed.  P.S. Dory kept saying Al JolsTon instead of Al JolSon, so many many apologies to all his relatives whom we have offended with that.  P.P.S. Something weird happened with our mic situation toward the end, so it’s a little soft ’n’ fuzzy and for that we are sorry. Please keep listening anyway, it’s very worth it.  P.P.P.S. Everything is fine.

You may *think* you know about space but you don’t know jack unless you watched The Farthest: Voyager In Space like we did on Netflix. It gave us an in-depth look at the space mission that explored the outer planets of our solar system, as well as the famous Golden Record that came with it and the forever dreamy Carl Sagan who helped bring it to life. Science editor and certifiable fly-by junkie Miriam Kramer stopped by to chat about why she loves Voyager and to finally give the public her official thoughts on whether or not aliens exist.

A wise person once said, “Everybody poops,” but *where* exactly are you supposed to put your poop?! The toilet, that’s where! And boy oh boy, we sure did learn a lot about the weird and wonderful world of human waste management while watching “The Toilet: The Unspoken History” on Amazon Prime. Comedian and amateur toilet coach Matt Fisher snuck away from his rigorous potty training schedule to discuss everything from “lady pees” to “going Deuteronomy” to “microwaved poop.” After listening to this episode, you won’t look at a toilet the same way ever again.   (Psst… hey… if you want to watch that super secret thing that was mentioned at the end of this episode (hint: it’s something very weird and inexplicable), email us! >> docunope@gmail.com)

Brains: you got one, I got one, it’s a real good time (at least that’s what it wants us to think). That’s why we watched The Brain That Changes Itself on Amazon Prime. It’s all about neuroplasticity, which can explain how even someone with LITERALLY HALF OF A BRAIN can end up being smarter than most of us. Video producer/star Tony Lee may be a disappointment to his mother, but he stopped by Docu-Nope to discuss why this documentary had us simultaneously scratching our heads and laughing our asses off and tapping our skulls while rubbing our bellies.  Comments, questions? >> docunope@gmail.com !

Art can make you feel a lot of things, like anger, confusion, and disappointment. These feelings are what most of us felt while watching the documentary “YARN”, which is about a group of yarn artists yarning it up in the world. We asked writer-at-large and local gimp enthusiast Scott Muska *AND* returning BFF of the show Neil “Toshio” Anand to help dissect why “YARN” upset us so much. If you’ve never been yarn-blasted before, then buckle up buttercup, cuz it’s gunna be a bumpy, wooly ride. (Also, I am using this space to apologize to my co-host, Christina. I said something really mean to her during this episode, and for that I am sorry. We are now better friends because of it […I think???])

Should ‘The Happening’ get a critical reappraisal because plants apparently CAN "talk"? That’s one of the many questions we asked ourselves after watching ‘What Plants Talk About’ on Amazon Prime. It’s got vampires, seductresses, and war mongers in it (but, spoiler alert: THEY’RE ALL PLANTS. DUN DUN DUNNNN.)   Professional illustrator Bob Al-Greene is not a plant-man by trade, but he does have “green” in his name, so we asked him to stop by and give us his thoughts on this exhilaratingly dense documentary. You know how sometimes parents will give a child an interesting or dumb name, and then that child grows up to tell boring stories about their interesting or dumb name? Well, a crack team of Boston filmmakers made a documentary about it called The Strange Name Movie and it's on Netflix, so obviously we had to watch it. Our friend Marty Morales from The YAS Podcast stopped by to break down why this movie was both comically and offensively bad.
