pWotD Episode 2922: Jill Sobule Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 207,999 views on Friday, 2 May 2025 our article of the day is Jill Sobule.Jill Sobule ( SOH-bee-ull; January 16, 1959 – May 1, 2025) was an American singer-songwriter best known for the 1995 single "I Kissed a Girl", and "Supermodel" from the soundtrack of the 1995 film Clueless. Her folk-inflected compositions alternate between ironic, story-driven character studies and emotive ballads, a duality reminiscent of such 1970s American songwriters as Warren Zevon, Harry Nilsson, Loudon Wainwright III, Harry Chapin, and Randy Newman. Autobiographical elements, including Sobule's Jewish heritage and her adolescent battles with anorexia and depression, frequently occurred in Sobule's writing. In 2009, Sobule released California Years, an album funded entirely by fan donations, making her an early pioneer of crowdfunding. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:13 UTC on Saturday, 3 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Jill Sobule on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Aditi.

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! *“Short People” by Randy Newman is a snarky, satirical jab masquerading as a pop song, delivering a wildly exaggerated roast of vertically-challenged folks with lines so ludicrous they border on cartoon villainy. With its bouncing piano and upbeat melody, the song mocks short people for everything from their “little hands” to their inability to “get around,” all while clearly winking at the listener with tongue planted firmly in cheek. It's less an actual insult and more a biting parody of bigotry itself—but on the surface, it's basically a musical roast that tells short people they've got “no reason to live,” delivered with the cheer of a children's singalong.DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! "GWW, "A Life Of Scare," The New Man, and much more" Just like our little operation, Evan Laffer and Ian Grant first launched their podcast, Jokermen, during the paralyzing pandemic to not only shed lyrical light and spin an endless yarn on the liberating legends that stand as their subjects but to find perfect peace and creature comfort in their harmonious heroes during one of the most horrendous times in contemporary history. Revealing the melodic meditation and stunning zeitgeist of some of the greatest minds in music, art, and cosmic culture, from The Beach Boys to Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Randy Newman and, or course, our subliminal soothsayet and sonic savior, Bob Dylan, Laffer, and Grant have provoked the ultimate unity by focusing on these legends in a way that is both tasteful and wildly addicting.  Laffer, who is also a poet, first found soalce in Dylan's work some years back and has since dedicated a great deal of his life, time, and radical research to the complex chameleon and his ever-changing landscape of lyrical liberation and esoteric energy. While this episode acts as a meeting of the minds of two people who are indefinitely obsessed with the "Great White Wonder," it will also mostly likely provoke a series of creative conversations and "Dylanistic" digestion into the daring depths of society's subconscious without a lifeguard in sight. Join us as we begin to peel back these lysergic layers of history by introducing a more abstract approach to a world that hass been scoured by scholars, where a "Simple Twist Of A Fate" will take you much further in this life of tremendous twilight that you ever could have imagined.

Joan Allen, Jesse Plemons, and Connie Britton round out De Niro's inner circle, while Lizzy Caplan and Matthew Modine are members of congress "just asking questions" about De Niro's investigative operation. Newman's solo career is a masterclass in sharp, literate satire, tackling America's deepest flaws with a deceptively laid-back style. From Sail Away to I Love L.A., his songs blend humor with biting social commentary. Fortunately, we are starting to shift a bit from pressing fire coverage, but KFI is still the destination to keep everyone impacted by the fire informed. And there is good news as Tim knows two people who have already been taken care of by the FEMA recovery centers. It's pretty rare to go deal with the government and have positive reviews. And Tim shares key information about receiving FEMA disaster assistance.  4:20pm – Tim discusses price gouging, and how it may even happen ‘unintentionally' by getting multiple rent offers due to the newly more competitive housing market. And the search for human remains unfortunately continues in Alta Dena where the Eaton fire has caused mass destruction. And a firefighter lost his personal home, when he was forced to flee as a result of the Eaton fire.  4:35pm – Tim talks about Randy Newman's song “I Love LA,” specifically the line about the “Santa Ana winds blowing,” and questions whether it's time for a lyric change due to fire sensitivity. Go vote @ConwayShow on X, to voice your opinion on whether the lyric change should occur.  4:50pm – Conway lets listeners know where they can get help from FEMA. And reignites the Randy Newman debate reviewing the poll results on X. And Tim compares Randy Newman's version of ‘I Love LA,' to Kris Jenner's rendition of it called “I Love My Friends,” from her 30th birthday.

This episode originally aired June 20, 2023 First-time author David Jacks, a veteran video editor and music supervisor, ran into legendary music producer Peter Asher at a Santa Monica taco joint in 2003 and asked if he could interview him. Jacks, a long-time admirer of the man said to be the inspiration for Mike Myers' “shagadelic” Austin Powers character, who first came to prominence as one-half of the hit-making British pop vocal duo Peter and Gordon and would go on to produce generation-defining albums for artists such as James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, and Diana Ross, immediately asked Asher if he would sit for an interview.  The aspiring journalist thought he might use the interview as the basis for an article in a music magazine, but the two-time Grammy-winning Producer of the Year didn't think anyone would want to read it. Nevertheless, that first interview led to another… and another… and on and on. Over the next two decades, the two continued to talk, while Jacks lined up interviews with hundreds of musicians and record industry professionals who had worked with Asher over the years, eventually leading to the publication of Peter Asher: A Life in Music, the first book-length account of the producer's life and career.  Join us for a two-part conversation with author and subject, as Asher reflects on a book he never thought anyone would be interested in reading, and Jacks shares what it was like to tease out the story of a shape-shifting pioneer—“a fascinating music business anomaly,” according to The New York Times, who could never quite understand what all the fuss was about.   Learn more about our guests:  Read The New York Times profile of Peter Asher, timed to coincide with the publication of the David Jacks book. Randy Newman is one of the most misunderstood and under-celebrated musicians of the modern era. Reknowned Music Journalist/Author Robert Hilburn's new book, A Few Words in Defense of Our Country is the definitive Randy Newman biography and Bob joins us to spotlight the genius and the legend of a great American musician and storyteller.Robert Hilburn was the music critic for the Los Angeles Times for 35 years and he's written books about John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash. Bob tells us that Newman (much like Simon) had to be convinced to have his legacy chronicled. Randy grew up in a legendary musical family in which tooting your horn (metaphorically) was frowned upon. His uncles composed movie scores and they taught Randy to let the work be your voice. We hear about Randy's challenging childhood, the pressure he felt to succeed in music and how success, once achieved, incurred his father's envy. Throughout his career, Randy's best childhood friend, Lenny Waronker (who became a record exec) believed in him, opened doors and cheered his efforts.Diving further into Randy's work flow, creative struggles and anxiety-taming efforts, Bob illuminates Randy's genre-bending and cultural interrogating musical achievements. We also delve, with Bob, into the influence once held by music critics in the golden ages of both print media and the music industry. We discuss the futures of recorded music and journalism and Bob tells us about his favorite interview ever… with Bob Dylan… and that one time he went to Folsom Prison with Johnny Cash.Plus, Weezy recommends the original Apple TV+ movie, Blitz and Fritz is currently into the new series Rivals, streaming on Hulu and other platforms.Path Points of Interest:Robert HilburnRobert Hilburn on WikipediaA Few Words In Defense of Our Country: The Biography of Randy Newman by Robert HilburnRobert Hilburn Amazon Author PageRobert Hilburn on XAmanda PetrusichBlitz on Apple TVRivals - On Several Platforms
