What to listen for:Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, welcome veteran USAR handler Bob Deeds, whose journey from compulsion-based training to positive reinforcement transformed both his career and the field itself! His career trajectory spans volunteer search and rescue in the early nineties through Texas Task Force One, where he deployed to the World Trade Center with his partner, Kenzie. The devastating loss of Kenzie in a 2007 training accident nearly ended his career until his friend Sonja Heritage called at 2 AM with a powerful message: quitting meant Kenzie died for nothing.Bob credits Bob Bailey's chicken workshops as the single most transformative experience for his training mechanics. The fast-paced chickens force observational skills development whether trainers want it or not. Those mechanical skills translated directly to his dogs: when his Malinois Remy would nip holes in Bob's shirt from frustration over poor timing, Karen would smile knowingly. The dog was using positive punishment to remind Bob to pay attention to delivery, timing, and curriculum! Now teaching directionals to pet dog owners and planning chicken workshops with Robin in Iowa, Bob teaches that directional control isn't about perfect patterns, but recovery. As handler Shirley Hammond told him after his first FSA certification, disasters aren't perfect, and recovery from mistakes matters most!Key Topics:Transition from Compulsion to Positive Reinforcement Training (01:33)Loss of Partner Kenzie and Nearly Quitting (04:13)Bob Bailey's Chicken Workshops and Mechanical Skills (11:50)Chickens vs. Dogs: Speed, Visual Cues, and Pecking Behavior (17:03)Directional Training Philosophy and Real-World Applications (26:43)Arousal State Management and Food Drive Testing (40:58)Recovery Over Perfection in Disaster Work (46:16)World Trade Center Emergency Stop Example (50:51)Takeaways (53:53) Resources:Chicken Workshops:3/16/26 Option3/23/26 OptionDeeds Canine ConnectionShirley Hammond's Book: Training the Disaster Search DogFenzi Dog Sports AcademyWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Send us a textWhat happens when two brothers decide to stop overthinking it and build a design studio around the kind of work they actually want to make?In this episode, we're joined by Jordan and Jeremy Coon of Brethren Design Co., a two-person studio built on trust, contrast, and a shared love of making things that are fun, expressive, and a little chaotic (in the best way). We discuss what it's really like to work with family, how they naturally fell into different roles, and why embracing each other's strengths has been key to their success. We also dig into how they educate clients, move past the “I just need a logo” mindset, and create space for projects that don't neatly fit into one box, from branding and packaging to fonts, board games, and beyond. Along the way, they share honest insight from quitting their day jobs, navigating LinkedIn as designers, and why doing work you genuinely enjoy tends to attract the right opportunities. All that and more when you listen to this episode:What it's like building a studio with your sibling How different creative strengths naturally turn into clear business rolesThe chaos vs. structure dynamic and why both are necessaryWhen and how they decided to quit their full-time jobsWhy educating clients is a designer's responsibility How showing process helps clients understand valueWhy they don't niche themselves into a single categoryHow fun, personality-driven work attracts the right clients Why they removed pressure from fonts by not tying them to revenue goalsCold outreach, long-game visibility, and unexpected referralsDesigning a full board game and how that opportunity came togetherLetting curiosity lead to new creative directions Connect with Brethren Design Co.Website: https://www.brethrendesignco.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brethrendesignco/ Mentioned in this episode:Chicken and the WolfSliced Beer Four Fathers (Website Design) Joe MooreVision Board KitSolid RootsMind the GapNetflix Project Connect with Katie & Ilana from Goodtype Goodtype Website Goodtype on Instagram Goodtype on Youtube Love The Typecast and free stuff? We've got trouble! We eat chicken croquettes and ice cream before discussing The Music Man (1962). This film is a slice of Americana that takes us back to a more innocent time when we could be swindled out of our money with the promise of music lessons. Although there is a section after the midpoint that we could all do without, we agree that the songs are well balanced, the choreography is amazing, and the themes are timeless. Come along and be our Shipoopi as we take to the streets to sing and dance.

Over the Christmas season, it is estimated that some 3.6 million families in Japan will tuck into KFC over Christmas (other fried chicken is available), which inspired the Unexpected Elements team to chew over all things chicken! First up, we discover that chicken may never have become domesticated if it wasn't for rice farming. We also ponder whether the chicken or the egg came first (are you Team Chicken or Team Egg)? Next, we find out that humans are surprisingly smart at translating chicken chatter. We're then joined down the line by Dr Jingmai O'Connor, associate curator of fossil reptiles at the Field Museum of Natural History, who reveals more about the links between dinosaurs and birds. Plus, how Brazil became a poultry superpower, and what happens to chickens in tornadoes. All that, plus many more Unexpected Elements. Presenter: Marnie Chesterton, with Camilla Mota and Godfred Boafo Producers: Alice Lipscombe-Southwell, with Sophie Ormiston, Ella Hubber and Robbie Wojciechowski

Ep 239 | This week on Discover Ag, Natalie and Tara dig into a Campbell's soup scandal, the CMA Awards crisis, a heartwarming veterans program, and the viral sesame seed discovery that has everyone rethinking their burger buns. A leaked audio recording from a former Campbell's VP calling their food "bleep for poor people" and claiming their chicken comes from a 3D printer goes viral, but the hosts argue the real issue isn't false ingredient claims—it's corporate culture and classism. The CMA Awards hit rock bottom with only 6 million viewers (down from 16 million a decade ago), sparking debate about country music's identity crisis and why they desperately need the Dancing With the Stars Gen Z marketer. On a positive note, the Armed to Farm program is helping veterans transition into sustainable agriculture with an 83% retention rate through hands-on training in everything from aquaponics to beekeeping. Plus, Cheetos launches a "Simply Naked" line without artificial dyes, and a viral video reveals where sesame seeds actually come from—growing in pods that burst open when ripe, which is literally the origin of "open sesame." What We Discovered This Week

Croissants as a starter? No issue whatsoever. Jordan Stephens is a musician, actor, presenter, podcaster and writer, who arrives at Dish off the back of an incredible year, full of achievements and firsts. He chats to Angela and Nick about the paperback release of his thought-provoking memoir, Avoidance, Drugs, Heartbreak and Dogs, a personal story of self-acceptance. Alongside events and talks to promote the book, Jordan has had a busy 12 months, making his theatre debut in Entertaining Mr Sloane, joining the hit podcast Miss Me? as its new host and presenting his first documentary for Channel 4. He also returned to where it all started with Rizzle Kicks, who released their first album in 12 years alongside a UK tour and a performance at Glastonbury. Angela serves up a warming dish of saffron & cardamom chicken with cranberry salsa, paired with a glass of Domaine Du Vieux Vauvert Vouvray. That's preceded by a cup of Earl Grey tea and a croissant, which immediately showcases Jordan's passion for food and ranking systems. Jordan's girlfriend is friend-of-the-show Jade Thirlwall, so we get an even deeper understanding of her love of roasts and their plans for Christmas. We also hear how food brought Jordan one-step closer to his dream of making music, and there's a return to our discussion on pet names. Please let us know if your dog is called Susan. You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and, new for this season, on Spotify. More importantly: is the language you use helping your team move, or quietly creating friction?I look at:→ Why familiar phrases like “meeting” and “we just need to communicate better” aren't specific enough for modern leadership→ How precise language transforms focus, pace and clarity→ Simple shifts you can make today to improve one-to-ones, collaboration and decision-making→ Why high-performing teams need a shared vocabulary for behaviour→ Tools that help create that shared language: Insights, DISC, Myers-Briggs, Giant and moreThink of language as WD-40 for your leadership. When you design it deliberately, every part of your organisation moves more smoothly. If this episode resonates and you want deeper, practical tactics to use with your team, you can find extra-Ordinary Leaders here: https://www.dollywaddell.com/store/p/the-extra-ordinary-leaderAnd if you'd like support applying these ideas inside your organisation, you can get in touch with me via dollywaddell.com.Listen, share, and let me know which language shifts you're taking into your week.

Jacquelyn Wetin of CJW Pino joins Melisha to talk about honest, practical ranching: how regenerative and rotational grazing change animal health and flavor, why buying direct from farmers matters for your family's nutrition, and small-farm realities—from pricing and labels to marketing and freezer logistics. Hear what it really takes to raise healthier meat and how consumers can vote with their dollars to support better food systems.Main pointsJacquelyn explains the difference between commercial meat systems and direct-to-consumer regenerative practices, including vaccine, antibiotic, and hormone use.Rotational grazing improves land health, reduces hay feeding, and can support profitability by improving pasture productivity.Commercial supply chains often mix animals from many sources and can lack transparency—labels can be misleading and product-of-origin claims are not always trustworthy.Chicken and pork in conventional systems are often raised in confined, antibiotic-reliant conditions that harm animal health and nutrient quality.Jacquelyn's approach: raise animals from conception to plate, rotationally graze year-round, avoid antibiotics and growth hormones, and use targeted feed (alfalfa, prairie hay, some non-GMO corn) for consistent flavor.Buying directly from trusted farmers improves traceability, nutrient quality, and supports local food resilience; buying in bulk (halves/quarters) is often the most sustainable model for farms.Practical consumer tips: rethink price-per-pound vs. upfront cost, plan ahead and use a freezer, ask farmers questions, and prioritize farmers who are transparent and communicative.Farmers need marketing and word-of-mouth; sharing social posts and referrals can be as helpful as purchases for small producers.Connect with CJW Pino RanchBUY MEAT! Get Goat Wise | Homestead Livestock, Raising Goats, Chickens, Off-grid living
Coccidiosis is one of the most common kid-health problems goat owners face, and it's one of the most misunderstood. Some herds battle it every year. Others hardly see it. In this episode, I'm breaking down what coccidia actually is, how it functions inside the gut, which strains are the most dangerous, and why stress and environment play such a big role in outbreaks. I'm also sharing the major shifts we made in genetics, kidding season, and management that completely changed our coccidia situation. After years of losing show goats to coccidiosis, we haven't had a single case in our main herd in three years—and I'll walk you through exactly why. And I'll touch on some natural, tannin-based supplements that some producers use to support gut health in herds that battle chronic coccidiosis pressure. We're incorporating one into our mineral mix right now, mainly for our show-goat breeders, and I'll share updates as we see results. Finally, if you think a kid might be dealing with coccidiosis, I explain why getting your vet involved quickly makes all the difference. In This Episode, I Cover: What coccidia is and how it functions in the intestinal lining How infection spreads and why kids are most vulnerable The strains of coccidia that cause the most damage The genetic component: why some goats struggle more than others How stress, moisture, overcrowding, and management influence outbreaks Our real-world experience with coccidiosis in show goats How shifting genetics and kidding season broke our coccidia cycle Why chickens donot give goats coccidia Natural tannin-based supplements some producers use for gut support When it's time to call your vet and why timing matters Key Takeaways: Coccidia are microscopic protozoa that damage the gut by destroying intestinal cells. The most pathogenic strains includeEimeria ninakohlyakimovae, arloingi, and Stress + moisture + high oocyst load = ideal conditions for coccidiosis. Genetics and kidding-season timing have a huge impact on resilience. Chickens cannot give goats coccidia—the strains are species specific. Tannin-based supplements may support gut health in high-pressure herds. Bottle kids remain more vulnerable due to stress and barn exposure. Good management prevents most cases—but if you suspect coccidiosis, contacting your vet early is critical. Mentions: 86 | Can Goats and Chickens Live Together?
