Send us Fan MailToday's show is going to be a little different. Usually, I interview professionals who are law enforcement, military, or victims of crimes. Today, I will interview a man who was a criminal. This is a story of second chances and what can be accomplished after making a mistake.Today on the show, I have Owen Hanson, whose life story was featured in the Mark Wahlberg production documentary, Cocaine Quarterback, available on Amazon Prime. Owen is a California kid whose mother left him and his father at a young age. He grew up playing volleyball and earned a scholarship to play at the University of Southern California. In his sophomore year, he was essentially cut from the team. His coach told him to get bigger and improve his vertical leap. So, Owen worked out six days a week, twice a week, and made it as a walk-on to the football team. He also took performance-enhancing drugs in his quest to become stronger and faster. This kid, who came from a modest middle-class broken home, was now partying with rock stars and other celebrities. He was also the team's and campus's drug dealer. After graduation, he wound up working as a bookie, money launderer, and associate with a Mexican drug cartel. At one point, he was making over a million dollars a day until it all came crashing down on him. He was tried and sentenced to 21 years in federal prison. Through a cooperation agreement with the Australian government, he was released after nine years. While he was in prison, he started a frozen protein product that he is now selling as a free man. Owen made a mistake, paid the price, and is now reinventing himself. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes tune into "The Vast of Night", the low-budget science fiction mystery that released on Amazon Prime during the pandemic.Both Butler and Field really enjoy the movie, especially its ambitious filmmaking and the performances from its two young leads. The film makes excellent use of long takes and creative camera work, creating a sense of momentum and atmosphere that far exceeds its modest budget. Both Mikes are surprised that the lead actors have not gone on to become bigger stars, given how much of the film's success rests on their shoulders.The discussion does reveal one notable disagreement. Butler is less enthusiastic about the film's highly stylized dialogue, finding it more suited to a stage play than a naturalistic film. Field, on the other hand, enjoys the rapid-fire writing and sees it as part of the movie's unique identity.The conversation also ventures into UFO and alien territory, as Butler compares the film's central mystery to real-world stories, theories, and folklore surrounding unexplained phenomena. In a windowless room in a rented warehouse in Oakland in 2019, Nabis cofounders Vince C. Ning and Jun Sup Lee, a few of their employees and a friend they met at the startup accelerator Y Combinator, Luana Lopes Lara(who would go on to cofound prediction market Kalshi and become one of the world's youngest self-made billionaires), were counting $2 million in cash by hand.  The money was earmarked for marijuana excise taxes in California. San Francisco-based Nabis had recently launched as a cannabis distributor during the medical marijuana heyday of the country's biggest weed market and it was Ning and Lee's job to collect and pay taxes on the product they delivered to retailers. The duo had hired an armed guard to watch the door. Once the cash was counted, banded and bagged, Ning put the money into two suitcases, $1 million in each, threw on a Hawaiian shirt—he thought he was less likely to get mugged if he looked like a tourist, but in the end he looked more like a scrawny narco-wannabe—and headed to the state government building to deliver the money. Bonus eps are when we go deep on a cultural phenomenon, text, or celebrity that's overwhelming our feeds, charming our pants off, or sparking general bewilderment. Off Campus does all three!
