NASA and Oxford computer models reportedly have proven, with use of Biblical references, that Jesus died on Friday, April 3, 33AD. Of course there is no way to confirm the literal resurrection story. Regardless, the idea is that we can use modern technology to peer into the past as if we have a looking glass into time. Every Easter there is a general celebration of both nature and the resurrection of the savior Jesus. He is brought back in church services, households, and communities across the Christian and non-christian world alike. We do the same thing with artists, authors, and musicians. A new exhibition in Australia is now featuring a performance of music from a lab-grown brain made from the dead composer Alvin Lucien's blood. This is a step up from using AI to complete Beethoven's unfinished work or using the same to produce new albums of the Beatles. It is also a step up from using holograms and AI to present Elvis or Tupac at concerts. In essence, Lucien's blood was able to provide him everlasting life - immortality. This can also be done with simple voice mirroring. One of the most controversial memes right now involves Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese anime producer, which is watching its iconic hand produced art be reproduced by anyone with an Internet connection, and a picture, in seconds with AI. There is even talk now that lawsuits may start flying out of Japan. But all art, music, etc., when an artist or composer dies, transcends time and becomes the voice of a ghost in the public space and time. The same stands true for the 1972 and 1973 Pioneer missions, which hold the Golden Record. Even the games we played as a kid teleport us back to those states when played as adults. The immortality of human civilization is guaranteed likewise by the endless broadcasts into space of movies, shows, music, speeches, and so on. We already know AI can generate fake audio and video, which could have a potentially devastating strike on any free elections and even grass roots movements, but AI has also been used to create fake images of giants, aliens, and cryptids, which has prompted the Loch Ness Center to draft experts to sort through the images. The central issue here is not so much about the nature of what is real or not in the age of AI, but how history helps us understand the present and future, and how modern technology - the future from the vantage point of the past - can be used to help us understand history. We are haunted by phantoms, besieged by necromancers, and surrounded by the supernatural. How easy is it now to produce God; to change the past by resurrecting and rebranding narratives like UFOs or 9/11. As Orwell wrote "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” This is another interpretation of the idea that the U.S. can “manipulate space and time.”*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. What does it take to create something the world has never seen before? In this final episode of Artful Intelligence, Reid Hoffman and Chris McLeod explore what it takes to spark a creative revolution with filmmaker Paul Trillo. Using OpenAI's groundbreaking AI video generator, Sora, Paul directed the world's first fully AI-generated music video.  After gaining early access to Sora, Paul faced a massive creative challenge: How could he use an AI tool known for surreal, dream-like visuals to craft a music video that felt emotionally real? The answer came from embracing AI's quirks—its strange hallucinations, its unpredictable transformations—and writing prompts like poetic scripts to guide the machine's creative output. Join us as Paul reveals how he turned an experimental AI model into an award-winning music video—and how creators everywhere can harness emerging tech to redefine what's possible in art. Time Stamps: Part 1: To Create a Paradigm Shift with AI, Lean Into Its Constraints 07:25 - Paul Trillo discovers OpenAI's AI video generator, Sora 09:46 - Navigating early uncertainty about AI's impact on filmmaking 12:09 - Directing under creative constraints during COVID with The Shins' “The Great Divide” 16:57 - Making emotionally resonant art despite technological limits 19:09 - Reid: What advice would you give someone running into constraints with AI tools? Part 2: Paradigm Shifts Often Come from Reviving Old, Impossible Ideas 23:01 - Paul's early experiments with Sora push AI video limits 24:34 - Resurrecting old creative concepts from his “Graveyard of Ideas” 25:59 - Inspired by Carl Sagan's “Golden Record” and its sci-fi storytelling potential 28:49 - Creating a surreal AI-generated trailer blending historical and futuristic imagery 30:21 - Revisiting a decade-old “infinite zoom” concept for a music video 35:05 - Reid: How do paradigm shifts in AI go beyond just replicating older tech? Part 3: Excavating Right at the Edge of What's Possible Today 37:45 - Writing “alchemy-like” prompts to guide AI's hallucinations 40:19 - Blending AI's surreal misremembered details into an emotional story 42:36 - Generating 700 videos and 320 minutes of AI footage for the music video 44:56 - Reid: What kind of impossible ideas might AI make possible? In s3e66 of Platemark, host Ann Shafer talks with Jennifer Roberts, an art historian and professor at Harvard, about her latest book, Contact: Art and the Pull of Print, which explores the intersection of intellectual and technical richness in print. Jennifer's book offers a fresh perspective on printmaking, synthesizing simple maneuvers like reversal and pressure to account for the medium's expansive influence. Based on her acclaimed Mellon Lectures delivered during the pandemic, the book is both conversational and accessible, aiming to engage a wide audience beyond the traditional confines of print expertise.   They also talk about Jennifer's journey into the world of print, which began during her research into the movement and dissemination of images within the Anglo-American world during the 18th and 19th centuries. Initially focused on the path of oil paintings, she inadvertently found herself immersed in the world of prints, specifically currency engraving—an intricate craft demanding the production of unreplicable reproductive objects to combat counterfeiting.   Jennifer shares insights from her 20+ years of teaching where she emphasizes long looking at objects (3 hours!) and integrates studio and theoretical learning. Additionally, Jennifer discusses an exciting collaboration with artist Dario Robleto. Their joint work delves into the fascinating realm of printed sound, specifically examining the Golden Record—a phonographic record sent into space on the Voyager probes. This project exemplifies Jennifer's penchant for exploring the intersections of materiality, meaning, and communication within both earthly and cosmic contexts, as well as the intersections of art, science, and the evolution of visual culture. Can music teach us how to live? In this interview Evan Rosa invites Daniel Chua—a musicologist, composer at heart, and Professor of Music at the University of Hong Kong—to discuss his latest book, Music & Joy: Lessons on the Good Life.Together they discuss the vastly different ancient and modern approaches to music; the problem with seeing music for consumption and entertainment; the ways different cultures conceive of music and wisdom: from Jewish to Greek to Christian; seeing the disciplined spontaneity of jazz improvisation fitting with both a Confucian perspective on virtue, and Christian newness of incarnation; and finally St. Augustine, the worshipful jubilance of singing in the midst of one's work to find rhythm and joy that is beyond suffering; and a final benediction and blessing for every music lover.Throughout the interview, we'll offer a few segments of the music Daniel discusses, including Beethoven's Opus 132 and the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th symphony, and John Cage's controversial 4'33”—which Daniel recommends we listen to every single day, and which we're going to play during this episode toward the end.Show NotesMusic and Joy: Lessons on the Good Life by Daniel Chua (https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300264210/music-and-joy/)Can music teach us how to live? The emotional relationship we have with musicEveryone identifies with musicHow did you come to love music and write on it?MusicologistThe Sound of Music soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeSQLYs2U8X0nTi15MHjMAWim3PxIyEqI)Listening to music at a young ageLove of Beethoven as a childWhat about Beethoven in particular spoke to you? Stephen King published The Shining, and Farrah Fawcett published the poster. Meanwhile, over at NASA, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were carried aloft for a five-year mission. Yet here we are, 47 years later, and they're still going strong. Voyager I is 15.2 billion miles from Earth; Voyager II is 12.7 billion miles away, and both are traveling at about 35,000 miles-per-hour. And as amazing as all that is, that's not what I want to talk with you about in this program. I want to talk with you about the payload they both carry—specifically, the golden record.

"An Imaginative, Meandering Journey Through Time and Space"In this latest installment of "Fall Asleep with Henrik", the host Henrik Ståhl once again embarks on a captivating, free-flowing exploration of his own thoughts and memories. Rather than following a linear narrative, Henrik's musings drift between reflections on his youth, imaginative anecdotes, and profound musings on the nature of existence itself.Throughout the episode, Henrik fondly reminisces about his teenage adventures with his best friend Marcus, recounting their ambitious attempts to create a homemade fantasy film. He also introduces listeners to a quirky improvisation game called "Book of the Day" that he and Marcus invented, inviting the audience to try it out themselves. However, the conversational thread takes a more philosophical turn as Henrik ruminates on concepts of time, space, and the eternal human urge to connect across vast distances. Drawing inspiration from the Voyager space probes and their famous "Golden Record", Henrik muses on the poignancy and futility of attempting to preserve a piece of humanity for potential alien discovery. As the episode progresses, Henrik's stream-of-consciousness delivery becomes increasingly dreamlike and transcendent, touching on themes of mortality, the illusion of non-existence, and the profound wonder of simply being. How The F**k Did You Get That Job?
Jenny Zirinsky's Unorthodox Leap from Sociology to the Global SVP of Marketing at Colgate-Palmolive

How The F**k Did You Get That Job?

Imagine stepping into the world of marketing with a sociology degree in your back pocket, ready to decipher the hieroglyphs of consumer behavior like some sort of modern-day Indiana Jones, minus the whip and the fear of snakes. This is the story of Jenny Zirinsky, Global SVP, Marketing, Communications, & Media Transformation at Colgate-Palmolive, whose career trajectory makes the Golden Record's journey through space seem like a leisurely stroll through the park. For those who missed the memo, Jenny is not your run-of-the-mill marketer. No, she embarked on her odyssey at Boston University, armed with nothing but a passion for sociology. Fast forward through the years, and you find her steering the ship at Colgate-Palmolive's marketing department. How did she get there? Well, buckle up, because this is where it gets interesting. Her journey kicks off in the agency world. Here, Jenny worked at OMD International and Resolution Media, honing her skills in the art of digital media strategy. Think of her as the captain of the Starship Enterprise, if the Enterprise was tasked with selling shampoo and toothpaste instead of exploring strange new worlds. Then came the leap to the brand side, a move akin to switching from tea to coffee — shocking to the system but ultimately invigorating. From Estée Lauder to Coty, Jenny didn't just walk through doors; she kicked them down with the finesse of a ballet dancer wearing steel-toed boots. Along the way, she learned the importance of work-life balance. But what sets Jenny apart is not just her career trajectory; it's her unwavering belief in seizing opportunities and diving headfirst into the unknown. She approaches challenges with the enthusiasm of a kid in a candy store, if the kid was a marketing genius and the candy store was the global marketplace. One of her crowning achievements? A Spider-Man campaign that made navigating Peter Parker's New York as thrilling as swinging through the city on a web. It was creative, it was innovative, and it probably made every competitor wish they had thought of it first. So, as Jenny Zirinsky continues her voyage through the world of marketing, let her story be a beacon for all those navigating the dark waters of their careers. It's a reminder that with a bit of humor, a dash of courage, and a sociology degree (apparently), the sky's not the limit — it's just the beginning.

When the Voyager spacecraft set off to explore the galaxy in 1977, it carried a recording to represent the best of humanity. The “Golden Record” featured everyone from Bach to Chuck Berry, but there was only one opera aria: the rage-fest and coloratura masterpiece from Mozart's “The Magic Flute.”As Kathryn Lewek reprises her role as Queen of the Night in this season's holiday presentation of “The Magic Flute” at The Metropolitan Opera, we're revisiting this episode. Host Rhiannon Giddens and her guests consider why the Queen of the Night's big moment – “Der Hölle Rache” – is an out-of-this-world achievement, how Mozart created a profound fairy tale for adults and what it takes for a soprano to reach the stratosphere. You'll witness Kathryn Lewek hit all those high notes onstage at the Met Opera and hear from Timothy Ferris, the man who produced NASA's “Golden Record.”The GuestsSoprano Kathryn Lewek describes singing “Der Hölle Rache” as throwing darts with your eyes closed. But after performing the part more than 200 times, she certainly knows how to hit the bullseye.Harvard University professor Carolyn Abbate once took her son to see The Magic Flute and he declared it to be “bad, but not in the way I expected it to be bad.” Her latest book is A History of Opera: The Last Four Hundred Years.Composer and author Jan Swafford was a graduate student when he spent his last $50 to buy a copy of The Magic Flute and immediately regretted it: He hated the opera. To say he's warmed to Mozart over the years would be a wild understatement.Timothy Ferris produced the Golden Record that went up with NASA's Voyager space probes in 1977. It was the only record he ever produced, but he's written many books including Coming of Age in the Milky Way, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Some questions fall far outside the scope of what governments are designed to answer. How will we explain ourselves to extraterrestrials? What can we say to warn humans 10,000 years in the future about the nuclear waste we're leaving behind? Assuming we develop the proper technology, would it be beneficial to breed glowing cats? Two decades after NASA shot a message to aliens into deep space, one of its authors joined an eclectic group of experts and went down a similar rabbit hole regarding nuclear waste. The result was one of the most outlandish, mind-bending, and heartfelt reports ever commissioned by the US government. This episode features artist Jon Lomberg, former NRDC lawyer Dan Reicher, and futurist Ted Gordon.

In 1977, we sent a Golden Record of the sounds of Earth into space with NASA's Voyager probes. This 'cosmic' calling card inspired the program team to make this - a golden record of Australian sounds. It varies from Nature Track - there are human made sounds and there are human voices, these soundscapes are layered sounds from all over Australia - they're not natural soundscapes. To create the soundscape for our vinyl record - our teams recorded over 200 bespoke sounds - many of which have been arranged into the final composition.  Sounds were gathered from as far as the Perth Canyon (20km west coast of Rottnest Island) and as remote as Warramunga in the Northern Territory. Ann's listening notes: 01:00 The beach, above and under the water.  03:00 Pygmy Blue whale song 06:00 Catching a ferry in Sydney 07:20 A plane, there:s always a plane.  08:30 Catching a train 09:00 Can you hear Tom Thum, the beat boxer here? Also you can hear street sounds from Newtown in Sydney.  10:10 A snippet of a conversation that has a swear word in it.  10:30 Iconic Australian pedestrian crossing with the sounds of the city.  11:40 Cicadas buzz, a lyrebird sings the taps are Kristian Benton searching for trees to fell to make a yidaki. 16:00 Natural Sounds are often marred by the sounds of leaf blowers, whipper snippers and other machinery.  21:15 Car on a country road with cow and cockies. a typical Australian scene. 22:30 The Orange Agricultural Show - announcements, motorbikes, chickens, shearing and whip cracking.  24:30 A wood chopping competition.  25:30 Driving on a dirt road - hear the dusty texture and the corrugations. 27:15 Warramunga Seismic and Infrasound Research Station - one of the quietest places on earth. 31:15 Wild cockatiels calling. On this podcast and subsequent episodes, Every two weeks or so,  I will share the most recent PSO piece and follow that with about 20 minutes of pieces randomly selected from the archives. This week begins with a cassette from the soundtrack of Carl Sagan's PBS series, The Cosmos. The synths from The Cosmos are broken up and rearranged and combined with an improvised acoustic guitar captured on the porch. It's the cosmic and the particular or the Infinite and the finite. I loved that series, Sagan's shaggy do and comfy corduroy, the mock turtle necks- everything in a kind of space-age beige all in the service of evoking the possibility of meeting alien life. And he made the Golden Record! which was attached to the Voyager spacecraft and spun out to leave our solar system in search of being found by an extraterrestrial with a turntable. "Only Connect" is the mantra for art-making coined by EM Forrester, and I love the impossibility and the hope embodied in the golden record gesture. The formation of PSO owes much to Sagan's endeavors.Following no. 210, This installment spans a range of tunes and feels. Tense days before the November 2020 election and the sounds of a neighborhood celebrating the election decision with fireworks in a debut with my youngest daughter who was just learning how to play the guitar. There are hums from Friday Harbor marine research boats, light saber sounds gleaned from my bedside clock with an electromagnetic mic and the twang of my dad's nearly unplayable old Gibson guitar plucked on the shore of Birch Bay in the Pacific North West in 2019.A YouTube stream of these pieces where you can see the images with titles and dates. https://www.youtube.com/@PorchSwingOrchestra Visit the PSO project site: PorchSwingOrchestra.org To join the Newsletter and/or support the project you can find PSO on substack at porchswingorchestra.substack.com. The Hot And Cold Past Of The Air Conditioner In the Northeast, the leaves have started changing colors, heralding the season of pumpkins, sweaters, and the smell of woodsmoke. But in some parts of the country, the heat hasn't let up. In cities like Dallas, Phoenix, and Miami, temperatures were up in the high 80s and low 90s this week—and with climate change, the U.S. is only getting hotter. But humans have come up with an ingenious way to keep the heat at bay: air conditioning. Widely considered one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century, the technology has transformed how and where people live—and it's prevented countless deaths. But it comes at a cost, and if we're going to keep up with a warming climate, we're going to need some other tricks to stay cool. Remembering Frank Drake, Who Listened To The Cosmos Last week, astronomer and SETI pioneer Dr. Frank Drake died at the age of 92. Dr. Drake was a key figure in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence—from Project Ozma in 1960, to the founding of the SETI Institute. He collaborated on the ‘Golden Record' that Earth sent to the stars on board the Voyager space probes. Drake also created a mathematical way of estimating the probability of discovering signs of intelligent life, a calculation that became known as the Drake Equation, and spent years advocating for the search for alien life. Drake appeared on Science Friday many times over the years. Here, in excerpts from conversations recorded in 2010 and 2016, he talks with Ira about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and his role with the Voyager Golden Record project. Our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, welcome back. We have perhaps never meant it to more??? Keeping Records is all the way back, with the new EJ and the old Shelby and all that record-making you love or hate or agree with or disagree with or tolerate. And could we have asked for a better first guest back than comedian/writer/podcaster-to-the-stars Jamie Loftus? No we could not. Finally all together in the studio, the gang puzzled over some really important questions like: Should you get a pet snake? (No.) Should one have sex with their car? (Only if the car is cool/souped up.) Why is Australia scary but New Zealand not scary? (Unsure.) And other questions that are really worth considering!!! All right, settle in lil freaks, we're wheeling in the AV cart for a very special session of Keeping Records. Yes, that's right, we're gonna dim the lights and sit quietly in our chairs while Caleb and Shelby tell us about some of the artifacts that NASA sent (without our input weirdly) on the original Voyager Golden Record. We'll learn about things that seem funny to us but normal to people in other parts of the world, we'll learn about fetuses and how that all works more or less, we'll learn that the Immaculate Conception was really the Original Cuckolding. All in all, we'll learn. Together. While we eagerly wait for new episodes to drop. Soon. We promise.  Be sure to watch the video version of the episode for a complete audio-visual experience and for two of the best wigs you'll ever see in your life.  The Artifacts:  Greeting: Cantonese Image: School Room Image: Fetus Diagram Image: Rush Hour Traffic Greeting: Portuguese Music: "Dark Was the Night," written and performed by Blind Willie Johnson Greeting: Nepali  Follow the show @keepingrecordspod Advertise on Keeping Records via Gumball.fm See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
