Reageren? Felicity Beckett talks to co-director Colin Butfield about his new film, Ocean With David Attenborough. The film takes viewers on a breathtaking journey showing there is nowhere more vital for our survival, more full of life, wonder, or surprise, than the ocean. The celebrated broadcaster and filmmaker reveals how his lifetime has coincided with the great age of ocean discovery. Through spectacular sequences featuring coral reefs, kelp forests and the open ocean, Attenborough shares why a healthy ocean keeps the entire planet stable and flourishing. Stunning, immersive cinematography showcases the wonder of life under the seas and exposes the realities and challenges facing our ocean as never-before-seen, from destructive fishing techniques to mass coral reef bleaching. Yet the story is one of optimism, with Attenborough pointing to inspirational stories from around the world to deliver his greatest message: the ocean can recover to a glory beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen. In 1954, a young David Attenborough made his début as the star of a new nature show called “Zoo Quest.” The docuseries, which ran for nearly a decade on the BBC, was a sensation that set Attenborough down the path of his life's work: exposing viewers to our planet's most miraculous creatures and landscapes from the comfort of their living rooms. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz trace Attenborough's filmography from “Zoo Quest” to his program, “Mammals,” a six-part series on BBC America narrated by the now- ninety-eight-year-old presenter. In the seventy years since “Zoo Quest” first aired, the genre it helped create has had to reckon with the effects of the climate crisis—and to figure out how to address such hot-button issues onscreen. By highlighting conservation efforts that have been successful, the best of these programs affirm our continued agency in the planet's future. “One thing I got from ‘Mammals' was not pure doom,” Schwartz says. “There are some options here. We have choices to make.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Mammals” (2024)“Zoo Quest” (1954-63)“Are We Changing Planet Earth?” (2006)“The Snow Leopard,” by Peter Matthiessen“My Octopus Teacher” (2020)“Life on Our Planet” (2023)“I Like to Get High at Night and Think About Whales,” by Samantha IrbyNew episodes drop every Thursday. Christi Dodge and Mike Dodge discuss the 1985 film "A Chorus Line," directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Michael Douglas, Terence Mann, and Audrey Landers. They analyze the film's cinematography, character development, and the use of a silhouetted director to create a mysterious figure. They note the film's realistic style, the use of full-length mirrors on stage, and the challenges of highlighting dancers in a crowded scene. They also discuss the film's financial performance, which was lackluster despite a $25 million budget, and its mixed critical reception. The hosts reflect on the film's impact and its place in the history of movie musicals. In early March 1879, fifty-five-year-old widow Julia Martha Thomas disappeared from her home in southwest London. Julia often travelled by herself on moment's notice, so neighbors thought nothing of her absence; however, when several female body parts were discovered in the Thames, police uncovered a gruesome crime that not only involved theft and impersonation, but also the ghastly murder of Julia Martha Thomas.Thomas's maid, Kate Webster, was quickly arrested and charged with Julia's murder. Through their investigation, detectives discovered that Thomas had recently given Webster notice of termination after only one month. Days before she was to leave Thomas' home, Webster murdered her employer, then dismembered her body and posed as Julia in order to sell off the murdered woman's belongings for a quick profit. Although she maintained her innocence, Kate Webster was tried, convicted, and executed for the crime, finally confessing her guilt just hours before she went to the gallows. The ”Richmond Murder,” as it was dubbed by the press, captivated Londoners for months and Webster's trial and execution became something of a public spectacle. In Victorian-era England, few people believed a woman capable of committing murder, much less dismemberment and rendering of a human body. Given that, and the shocking viciousness of the crime itself, the Richmond Murder remains one of London's most notorious murders of the late nineteenth century.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBirmingham Evening Mail. 1879. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz trace Attenborough's filmography from “Zoo Quest” to his newest program, “Mammals,” a six-part series on BBC America narrated by the now- ninety-eight-year-old presenter.

Presented by Irena TaranyukA stalled front line and diplomatic challenges - we look at the pressures on Ukraine with Vitaliy Shevchenko, Russia editor at BBC Monitoring. And Daria Taradai of BBC Ukrainian tells us about the return to Kyiv of hundreds of ancient Scythian treasures from Crimea, which were on loan to a European museum when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Their arrival in Kyiv follows almost 10 years of legal battles with Russia.Pilgrimage to Aksum Thousands of pilgrims recently made their way to Aksum in Ethiopia, for a religious holiday taking place for the first time since the end of the civil war in the northern region of Tigray. Aksum is a holy site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians who say it is home to the Ark of the Covenant. BBC Tigrinya's Girmay Gebru, who's based in the regional capital Mekelle, travelled to Aksum to talk to local people and visitors.HIV and sterilisation: a legal victory in Kenya After a nine-year legal battle, four Kenyan women living with HIV have shared their stories with BBC Africa, of how they were sterilised without informed consent. They have now received compensation, and the recognition that the procedures they went through at a public hospital were carried out because of their HIV status. Health correspondent Dorcas Wangira tells us about meeting them, and the legal significance of this ruling. Lost and found: Indonesia's rare echidna Pristine forests, crystal clear water, and an ancient species of animal that was believed to be extinct - BBC Indonesian's Famega Syavira travelled to northeastern Papua to report on the rediscovery of Attenborough's long-beaked echidna. Previously, the only evidence of this rare species of the egg-laying mammal was a dead specimen in a Dutch museum, collected 60 years ago. Few of us live out our childhood dreams, let alone meet the hero that set us on our life path. Chadden Hunter, Australian biologist and wildlife filmmaker, has spent the better part of two decades in pursuit of the perfect shot. From living in a Bornean bat cave for a month, to scuba diving under Antarctic ice shelves and dodging death on the Arctic tundra - his mission is to tell nature's weird and wonderful stories. As a kid growing up in Northern Queensland, he was fascinated by Sir David Attenborough documentaries and the tropical world around him. Every dollar he earned went to dives on the Great Barrier Reef, and after graduating with a degree in Zoology, he pursued a PhD in Ethiopia. There, high in the Simian mountains, he had a chance encounter with an Attenborough film crew, and the man himself.
SIDE HUSTLE 12: RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH AIN'T NO DUMMYOnly four episodes left in our epic season ten, talking side hustles. While we mostly have discussed directors better known as actors, this week we talk Richard Attenborough, who, if not for Jurassic Park, would probably be better known as a director today. But he was a great actor! And not just when playing billionaire softy grandpas that accidentally upturn the biological order of an entire planet because he wanted his grandkids to have cuddly raptors. He was legitimately a great actor. BRIGHTON ROCK (1948) is the first of two movies based on books with scripts credited to the author of the books themselves, and not some schmuck (this one is by Graham Greene. Directed by John Boulting, Rock has Attenborough in one of his greatest roles as Pinkie Brown, a nasty hood on the rise in the titular town of Brighton between world wars. It's a fairly grim film with Attenborough seething malice at nearly every turn. He's so good! MAGIC (1978) was a bit of a breather for Attenborough, the director, as he worked to get his passion project, a tiny indie film no one ever saw called GANDHI, made and re-teamed with producer Joseph E. Levine and author/screenwriter William Goldman, both of whom worked with Attenborough on 1977's epic A BRIDGE TOO FAR, for something quite small by comparison, a thriller about a magician who mysteriously rises to fame once he brings a dummy, named Fats, into his act and then decamps to his old hometown right before his big breakthrough to stalk a high school crush. The magician, Corky, is played by Anthony Hopkins and the crush by a dressed down Ann-Margret. Fats generally steals the show as things go from creepy to violent. It's great! Co-host Ken read the book and spills on all the changes made from page to screen (spoiler: not much). Ken and Thomas discuss the rest of Attenborough's career as one of the few great actors who moved away successfully from acting to be full time great directors. Bonus: Fats joins us!THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096
