Our conversation today with Guy Curtis, Director of Marketing for Laurel Ridge Community College included details for several upcoming virtual information sessions and open houses planned in the coming months. We initially talked about the name change for the school and the opportunity changing the name from Lord Fairfax Community College to Laurel Ridge Community College affords the institution to reach a new audience. Michelle explained her role as Director of Outreach and talked about the valuable partnerships they've established with local businesses, non-profits, and government agencies such as Virginia Career Works. She gave us the details for a few upcoming virtual information sessions and talked about how anyone can start/return to college virtually or in-person. We were on the screen recording today with Sarah Pangle, Career Services Advisor at Lord Fairfax (becoming Laurel Ridge) Community College to talk about the college's upcoming Career & Internship Fair. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at the Corron Community Development Center from 10am - 3pm. Sarah told us how attendees should prepare for attending the event (resume, wardrobe, small talk) and told us a bit about the types of employers who will be in attendance. Our conversation today with Kerry Kilpatrick, Lord Fairfax Community College (Fauquier campus) librarian, ran the gamut from her typical day, being involved in the classroom and genuinely enjoying helping students to talking about her potentially lifesaving surgery. Kerry explained that librarians aren't what we may think they are. At LFCC, they work with professors through workshops and seminars to help them understand the process after an assignment is given. She told us how they interact and help students in need of physical materials as well as online research. We also talked about her inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis a few years ago and why she's become an advocate & educator for more people to feel comfortable talking about it and seek preventative care. Kareem Jenkins, a 2021 graduate of Lord Fairfax Community College Medical Assistant Program talks about how the pandemic factored into his decision to change his career path and pursue a a healthcare profession. Kareem explains the moment when he realized that he needed to "take his life more seriously" and made the decision to return to school to pursue a career in healthcare. He plans to continue this path to become an RN. Tiffany explained how she juggled being a full-time mom to two children AND the work that comes with continuing your education. She told us about the TRIO program offered at LFCC and the impact it had on her ability to achieve her educational goals. She offered many pieces of advice for students who are hesitant to start or return to school and talked about how getting her degree has changed her life and her perspective. We talked about all the "firsts" he experienced from being the youngest professor on faculty to creating his own computer network before they were "a thing." Rostant Kengni, a 2019 Lord Fairfax Community College graduate talks about his education journey that brought him to the United States from Cameroon, a country in Central Africa in 2015. Rostant told us how he came to choose the United States (actually, how it chose him) and ultimately landed at Lord Fairfax Community College. He had already earned a Master's Degree and was a teacher in his native country but opportunities for growth were no longer available. He explained how he found his sponsor, came to Winchester, learned the language and worked hard to clear his path to higher education. Jose tells us about his journey as a 16-year old from El Salvador to Winchester, learning the language, enrolling at Lord Fairfax Community College to his current pursuit of a Bachelor's degree at James Madison University.
