Very few people in this industry have sat in all three of the seats that matter in the bank-fintech story. Amanda Swoverland started as a compliance examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, spent nine and a half years at Sunrise Banks rising to Chief Risk Officer, then joined Unit as its fourth employee and Chief Compliance Officer. Six months ago she became President of Hatch Bank, a California-chartered ILC that works exclusively with fintech lending partners. She still describes herself as a banker at heart, and this conversation is a good explanation of why that matters more now than it did five years ago. What We CoveredFrom Fed compliance examiner to bank presidentWhy she was never the department of noLearning product and sales inside a fintech infrastructure companyHatch Bank's credit-only model, with no depositsThe five lending verticals Hatch focuses onGoing deep with a few partners instead of diversifying across 30What a fintech gets from a small sponsor bank that scale cannot offerLifting a BSA/AML consent order in under a year"Maturing for scale" as the theme of her first six monthsUsing AI internally without sending agents out into the wildWhy the quality of founders approaching sponsor banks has gone upThe direct versus not direct debate after SynapseWhy every fintech should have a second bank partnerWhere AI is genuinely working in compliance todayDIDMCA, state charters and the usury patchworkWhat separates the sponsor banks that survive the next cycleKey TakeawaysThe "direct versus not direct" framing that took hold after Synapse is, in Amanda's view, a distraction. If a bank has a program, the bank is in charge of it, whatever technology sits in the middle and whoever is acting as program manager. Everything else is a question of how you oversee it, not who is accountable. The next failure will not look like Synapse, because that particular gap has been closed. What worries her is banks that never learned the fundamentals: liquidity, credit oversight, BSA/AML, and how a multi-party lending program behaves when the cycle turns and payments stop arriving on time.A second bank partner is good for the fintech and good for the bank. Concentration risk cuts both ways, and Amanda actively introduces her own clients to other banks she trusts, and is happy to be someone else's second bank.Compliance is heading toward 100 percent sampling. Amanda thinks the days of testing a selected sample of transactions or complaints are ending, provided you test the system, watch the outputs, and keep a human in the loop.About Amanda SwoverlandAmanda Swoverland is President of Hatch Bank, a San Marcos, California ILC that works exclusively with fintech lending partners across home improvement, small business, clean energy, student lending and healthcare financing. This message from Acts 16:11-15 traces the gospel's first arrival in Europe through the conversion of Lydia, a successful seller of purple goods and worshiper of God in Philippi. God opens her heart to the message of Jesus, leading to her baptism, the salvation of her household, and a lifestyle of radical hospitality that helps plant a thriving church. The sermon challenges every “worshiper of God” that generic belief is not enough—true faith requires a personal response to the humble, self-sacrificing King who wore a mock purple robe on the cross so that we might be clothed in His righteousness. "Friendship is one of the most indispensable requirements of life," says Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics. But, adds Alasdair MacInytre, it's also "difficult and often enough impossible—especially under the conditions characteristic of contemporary modernity." Today on HeightsCast, long-time colleagues (and friends!) Austin Hatch and Tom Steenson reflect on the nature of friendship, and why it was chosen as the theme for the 2026 Convivium Conference for Teaching Men, hosted by The Heights Forum this November. What is the value of friendships among fellow faculty? What are the ingredients of that friendship? How should individual teachers seek it? How can school leaders foster it? And how might the students benefit? Mr. Hatch and Mr. Steenson begin to scratch the surface of these questions in preparation for the deep-dive at this year's Convivium. Scott Hatch grew up Methodist, but learned about DIY music at his college radio station. When he started his label, Burnt Toast Vinyl, in 1996 he put out bands that had a similar background to him- fellow youth group kids. One of those youth group kids was Randall Stephens. He grew up Nazarene, but was inspired by bands like Pavement and Guided By Voices to start the band Jetenderpaul in the early 1990s. After releasing three albums and a handful of singles for Velvet Blue Music and Burnt Toast Vinyl, Stephens went on to become a respected academic who researches the intersection of Christianity and rock music. His book, The Devil's Music, is essential reading on the topic. This year Burnt Toast Vinyl re-released Jetenderpaul's second album, The Woolen Spires on vinyl for the first time. --Do you have a Christian rock story to tell? In this sermon, Pastor Jason discusses the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15, which is a pivotal moment in the early church when leaders had to answer an essential question: Is salvation received by God's grace through faith, or must people earn it through religious works? As the Gentiles were coming to faith in Jesus, some Jewish believers insisted they first obey the Law of Moses—including circumcision—to truly be saved. Paul, Barnabas, Peter, and James firmly rejected this teaching, declaring that salvation has always been by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ. The council concluded that believers should never place unnecessary burdens on those coming to Christ because Jesus has already accomplished everything necessary for salvation. The pastor challenges the church to see that this struggle still exists today.    Website: redeemermidland.org Instagram: instagram.com/redeemermidland Facebook: facebook.com/RedeemerMidland   At Redeemer, we seek to be a Gospel-Centered, Missional Family. Interview with Nolan Peterson, CEO of Atlas SaltOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/atlas-salt-tsxvsalt-no-competitors-lowest-cost-producer-a-mining-story-built-for-certainty-10812Recording date: 8th July 2026Atlas Salt has advanced its Great Atlantic Salt Project in Newfoundland from pre-development into active construction, marking a key milestone for the company. Since construction began in February, work has shifted to feasibility-study-funded capital expenditures, meaning current activities are part of the permanent mine infrastructure rather than preparatory steps. Backed by recent financing, the company has maintained steady progress through the 2026 construction season.Early-stage work has focused on site clearing, overburden removal and storage, subgrade preparation, and initial road and drainage infrastructure. These efforts are designed as long-term assets for the project. The next major milestone, excavation of the box cut and development of a 1.5-kilometre underground drift, is still several months away and will be critical in determining the project's technical performance.Initial geotechnical observations have been encouraging, with ground conditions appearing drier and more stable than expected. If confirmed, these conditions could reduce both construction time and capital costs, though further testing during drift development will be necessary to validate these early findings. On the regulatory side, Atlas Salt has secured permits covering over $150 million in early works. In addition, local authorities have shifted to a streamlined permitting approach aligned with provincial approvals, reducing administrative complexity and signaling strong regional support. The project aims to produce 4 million tonnes of de-icing road salt annually, targeting undersupplied markets in the northeastern United States, eastern Canada, and Atlantic Canada. Execution is supported by an experienced in-house team and engineering partner Hatch, with a phased staffing strategy intended to reduce risk during peak construction.Overall, Atlas Salt's transition into active construction, combined with favorable early conditions and improved permitting, positions the project for continued advancement toward full-scale production.View Atlas Salt's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/atlas-saltSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

In Episode 6, the simmering tensions between Milton "Doc" Noss and his double-crossing partner, Charlie Ryan, finally boil over into a deadly 48-hour window. Based on the exhaustive, decades-long research of investigative author John Clarence (the pen name of Jack Staley), this gripping episode breaks down the frantic, minute-by-minute events of March 4th and 5th, 1949. The chaos begins with a tragic airplane crash at Victoria Peak involving Doc's stepson, Marvin Beckwith, which provides Doc with the perfect cover to slip away from Ryan's watchful eyes without raising suspicion.Knowing that Ryan was planning to steal 110 gold bars and fly them to Mexico without him, Doc seized this momentary distraction to act. Under the cover of a freezing desert night, he enlisted the help of a rodeo cowboy named Tony Jolly. Together, they embarked on a frantic midnight operation, digging up roughly 4,000 pounds of crude gold bullion and scrambling to re-bury the 110 bars across several new, secret caches. By dawn, the gold was safely hidden from Ryan, but Doc had unknowingly set the stage for his own demise. The climax of the episode arrives at noon on March 5th in Hatch, New Mexico. Furious that the gold was missing, Ryan marched Doc into a rented house at gunpoint. Following a chaotic scuffle where Doc shoved a table into Ryan and attempted to flee toward his truck, Ryan shot the unarmed Doc Noss just below his right eye, killing him instantly against his front bumper. With that single gunshot, the man who held the keys to the greatest treasure in North American history was silenced forever.Adding insult to fatal injury, the episode concludes with the staggering mockery of justice that followed. Listeners will be stunned to learn that both the presiding judge and the defense attorney in Ryan's murder trial were actually secret investors in Doc's mining company—a glaring conflict of interest that ultimately allowed Ryan to walk away a free man, despite the testimony of five eyewitnesses who watched him shoot a fleeing man. Tune in to hear the tragic final hours of Doc Noss. And remember, if you want to read the definitive account of this incredible saga, you can secure a rare, signed copy of John Clarence's Gold House trilogy by contacting Jeff Crudele directly at podcastjfk@gmail.com

Ever heard the phrase “match the hatch”? It reminds fishermen that the best way to catch fish is to figure out what the fish are eating. But did you know this concept could help you get your teenage son involved in church, too? Pay close attention to what activities your boy is drawn toward the most. Does he love music and playing an instrument? Encourage him to get involved in the church praise team. Is he into skateboarding? Search for a local Christian skater group. Does he love the adventure of video games? Get him involved with Christian outdoor groups, like Trail Life USA. Don't pull your son away from the things that interest him– instead, “match the hatch” and find a Christian community related to his favorite activity. For more ideas on raising boys to be godly men, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.
