Close to midnight on May 17, 1951, four north Alabama lawmen drove to a bootlegger's home to serve an arrest warrant. Before the clock struck twelve, the bootlegger lay dead in front of the house he shared with his wife and eight children, and three of the four officers were also dead. Afterward, a sixteen-year-old boy would face a series of trials that would divide a county and thrust the state of Alabama into the national spotlight. My guest is Professor Lesa Carnes Shaul, author of "Midnight Cry: A Shooting on Sand Mountain". She grew up on Sand Mountain hearing stories about this sensational shootout and joins me to talk about her research into this fascinating case. Within the ranks of turkey hunters, there are people who are specialists. We are going to highlight those specialists with a series of podcasts. The first one that we are featuring is "The Technician". We all have one in our circle, at least I hope we all do. Our friend Matt Kilpatrick is a technician. A cabinet builder by trade, he has an uncanny sense of craftsmanship and an eye for detail. He is the type of guy that will not trust the success of his hunt to someone that he doesn't know in a factory loading his shells, or making his mouth yelpers. So, he does it himself. We discuss handloading TSS, making mouth yelpers to specific standards and custom for his pallet. In typical Woodsman Perspective form we tell some stories and have some laughs along the way. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed do in it.

Brian Kilpatrick is the Chief Operating Officer of Trinity Park Conservancy. With nearly four decades of experience in the attractions and hospitality industry, Brian has built a career that spans multiple disciplines, including food and beverage, retail, finance, and operations. His journey began at SeaWorld, where he spent 35 years, and later took him to leadership roles at Anakeesta and the Artis—Naples performing arts center. Now, at Trinity Park Conservancy, he is focused on creating accessible and sustainable green spaces for the Dallas community. In this interview, Brian talks about building green space intentionally, being a good listener, and getting to know the community. Building Green Space Intentionally "We are building Dallas's Central Park." Trinity Park Conservancy's mission is to transform the Trinity River into a connected and accessible green space for the Dallas community. Brian emphasizes the importance of designing Harold Simmons Park with clear intent, ensuring it serves as more than just a recreational area—it's a space for nature, conservation, and community gathering. The project spans 250 acres and is designed to unite Dallas through a series of scenic overlooks, improved pedestrian access, and a deep focus on sustainability. Drawing from his theme park background, Brian applies best practices in operational planning to ensure the park remains well-maintained and inviting for years to come. Being a Good Listener "I've learned over the years, and again, I think it's evolved into my style today, that you really have to be inclusive of what you're going to use from a knowledge base and experience base to make a decision." Throughout his career, Brian has adapted his leadership style to focus on active listening and inclusivity. Early in his career, he admits to being more assertive, but over time, he realized the power of truly understanding the perspectives of others before making decisions. At Trinity Park Conservancy, listening plays a central role in ensuring the project aligns with community needs. Whether it's gathering feedback from stakeholders or engaging in conversations with local residents, Brian stresses the importance of hearing different viewpoints to create a space that reflects the desires of those it serves. His ability to synthesize insights from various sources, including community members and industry peers, has been instrumental in shaping the vision for Harold Simmons Park. Getting to Know the Community "I can tell you without a doubt, if I walked you through the park plan today, the elements of the park are what the community told us they wanted." Brian recognizes that for Trinity Park Conservancy to be successful, it must reflect the unique needs of the people it serves. Understanding the historical and socioeconomic landscape of Dallas, he and his team have taken a grassroots approach to community engagement. By meeting with residents, attending local board meetings, and walking the grounds himself, Brian has built connections that help inform the park's development. The Conservancy's commitment to listening to the community has led to a park design that directly incorporates their input, ensuring it fosters inclusivity and unity. Brian's leadership ensures that Harold Simmons Park is not just a project but a shared vision with the people of Dallas. In this episode of Connected Leadership Bytes, Andy Lopata revisits the episode with LaTonya Kilpatrick, Worldwide Director of Technology Research and Innovation at Colgate Palmolive. LaTonya, a chemist by training, discusses the critical role of strong partnerships, both internal and external, in her work to develop better oral care solutions. She emphasises that effective partnerships begin with understanding each party's motivations, curiosity, and what they can gain from collaboration. LaTonya describes how her team often partners with external academics for data analysis or with companies that need help navigating oral care regulations and metrics. She also highlights internal partnerships with product development and IT teams to bring ideas to fruition. She explains that the decision to build a competency or partner depends on project needs and whether the partnership is a long-term investment for the company. A major challenge lies in bridging the communication gap between different departments (e.g., scientists vs. IT) and ensuring all contributors, especially implementers, feel appreciated and recognised for their role. LaTonya maintains that transparency and authentic communication are also crucial to maintaining trust. She discusses how the most successful partnerships are with those who understand the value of the relationship. Finally, Andy and LaTonya talk about her passion to engage children in science, emphasising her role as a scientist and mentor. Her goal is to help them by making science fun and approachable early on, inspiring children to see science in their everyday lives, using simple experiments. Key Takeaways: Understanding Motivations: Successful partnerships begin with truly understanding what motivates each party, what their goals are, and how they can benefit from thecollaboration. Build vs. Partner: Decisions on whether to build internal expertise or partner externally should be made on a project-by-project basis, considering long-term value and needed expertise. Language and Communication: Bridging communication gaps between different departments or organisations is crucial. It is essential to adapt language, really listen, and find common ground. Appreciation is Key: Recognising and appreciating all contributors, including those in supporting roles, is vital for building and maintaining trust and morale. Research is Essential: Those seeking partnerships must demonstrate they understand the needs and value of the potential partner by doing their research and presenting it in the right perspective. Science is Everywhere: Science can be made fun and approachable for children, fostering their natural curiosity. All the first universities were—St. Thomas Aquinas would tell us—Catholic ones. But in this modern day, it takes intentionality to maintain the rich tradition of Catholic education. In a talk recorded for HeightsCast, Dr. Peter Kilpatrick, president of The Catholic University of America, spoke to families at The Heights about what it means to be a Catholic university. He first consults the experts: Thomas Aquinas, John Henry Newman, John Paul the Great, and Pope Benedict XVI. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosophical short story writer, essayist, and poet Jorge Luis Borges's story "The Theme Of The Traitor And The Hero" which can be found in Collected Fictions. It focuses on the several narrative frames to the story. In the deepest, a hero of the Irish revolts Fergus Kilpatrick is revealed as being a traitor to the cause, by his old friend and comrade, James Alexander Nolan, who he had commissioned to find the traitor. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
NEW: send me a text message! (I'd love to hear your thoughts - texts get to me anonymously, without charge or signup) Martin Luther (not the King) nailed 95 protest theses against the Christian church of his day to a church door in Germany on October 31st 1517. And Protestants , properly understood, have been protesting ever since. As we near "Reformation Day" again, David Kilpatrick, a Professor of English and Sports Managment, channels that spirit of protest to the world of soccer. His playful, bold and short book "95 Theses on the Reformation of Football: Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Glocal Football Governance" stands in a strong tradition of critical and intelligent football literature on this podcast. A listener himself, David and I roamed anywhere between 16th century Germany, the New York Cosmos, youth soccer and the mess that is FIFA. In this longer episode before a Fall break, you will also get an update from Wayne (of the Red Bull and Leeds United episode 4 weeks ago) on the anointing of Jürgen Klopp as the head of Red Bull's soccer empire, and a critique of what is happening (or not) with the Chicago Red Stars. Plugged In - The Official Podcast for JSerra Catholic High School
According to Dr. Peter Kilpatrick, Catholic Education is distinct not only in that it offers classes in theology or “religion.” Integration of the curricular and co-curricular is the true hallmark of Catholicism. That means that in Catholic schools – and especially Catholic universities – the goal should be much more than skills building for a future profession and even more than character formation. The ultimate purpose of Catholic education is to guide students into a deeper recognition and understanding of God's revelation of the true, good, and beautiful across all disciplines and in every arena of human life. Dr. Kilpatrick articulates this and discloses the unique way that the Catholic University of America executes on this noble educational venture. ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Peter K. Kilpatrick was appointed president of The Catholic University of America in March 2022 and took office on July 1, 2022. His prior roles are numerous. He served as provost and senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Illinois Institute of Technology and previously as professor and McCloskey Dean of Engineering for ten years at the University of Notre Dame. He launched Notre Dame's first joint Ph.D. program with the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, later expanding to programs with universities in Brazil and Hungary. Dr. Kilpatrick also served on the faculty of North Carolina State University in chemical engineering for 24 years, from 1983 to 2007, the last eight-plus years as the department head. Dr. Kilpatrick also served as the founding director of the North Carolina Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center. He is the author of more than 100 refereed journal articles in the areas of colloid and interfacial science, emulsion science, and molecular self assembly, particularly as they apply to energy and to bioseparations. His work has been cited more than 5,300 times and he holds or shares 12 patents. He received his A.B. in chemistry from Occidental College (summa cum laude) in 1978 and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1983. He and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of four adult children.
