If you're going to write about the Oregon Trail or the Mississippi flatboat era, why not go gonzo? Does it make for better history or just better bar stories? What can you really learn about change by recreating epic journeys in contemporary times, and what can that teach us about how we live upon this planet? Today, adventurer and author Rinker Buck is on the show to discuss his odysseys. In particular, his flatboat ride from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, and his mulecart passage of the entire Oregon Trail. If you're gasping reading that last sentence, you need to read his books. Obviously, these landscapes have massively changed over the centuries, and their environmental history reflects human wants and desires, some good and others less so. How are they shadows of their former selves, which could you not tell which century you're currently in, and which are making beautiful comebacks? What does it teach us about the country so many of our listeners call home? How does the American experience prepare or fail to prepare us for a climate-changed world? Rinker discusses his particular approach to participatory history, why he doesn't like reenactment as a paradigm, and why he bothers with the Heraclean effort for which some might deem him a "conquistador of the useless." Tune in and learn from Rinker's hard-earned experience and observations! Chuck Rinker, CEO of PRSONAS, sees the next-generation workforce of digital healthcare components as digital personalities and avatars that will act as patient advocates and improve the communications between patients and clinicians. With an emphasis on building trust and showing empathy, these digital tools help gather accurate information and break down language and cultural barriers. Avatars can be customized for locations like hospital lobbies and purposes like clinical trial recruitment. With a background in game programming, Chuck brings a deep knowledge of how the emotional bond between gamers and avatars can be applied to building more robust patient engagement. Chuck explains, "Since technology has been predominant in the healthcare space, we've always had to teach people how to use technology, and the barrier is communication. So, we've said, well, let's just take a different approach. We're not trying to recreate humans, and we're not trying to replace humans. We're just trying to teach all this technology, this scalable healthcare, this improvement in healthcare technology that we have, and make it so that it can communicate to us as humans. We naturally communicate as humans. We don't naturally communicate as an IT specialist, so we're trying to flip it on its head and work it the other way around." "That was a concept we started way back in 2013. We originally built a few of these as product specialists in the pharmaceutical drug launch space. I think Genentech and Pfizer were probably the first ones to use it. It was meant to support the healthcare professionals. Okay, what's all the information you have, from prescribing information to all the complexities of a mechanism of disease and all that you have to relay over and over and over during a multiphase pharmaceutical launch? So, we built these repeatable humans to be those domain experts." "We've learned along the way that it was a great, wonderful piece but that the patients themselves are the ones who are getting "lost in the mix." So, our units are trained to speak whatever language is used by the patient population you're targeting. They can be culturally diverse. We do Sign Language - American Sign Language and British Sign Language. So it's really about creating that advocate, breaking down that communication barrier so that every patient feels represented and welcomed and has their own patient advocate to help them through that healthcare journey."  #PRSONAS #Avatars #DigitalPersonalities #DigitalHealth #AI #PatientAdvocate #PatientEngagement #ClinicalTrials  PRSONAS.com Listen to the podcast here

For this episode, David is joined by Chuck Rinker the owner and CEO of PRSONAS™ by nuMedia.  He is programming humanity into artificial intelligence, with a focus on the healthcare industry, which is close to Chuck's heart. They discuss the role AI has actually been playing in our lives for decades and how it will be used in the future. Chuck explains how PRSONAS™ is teaching technology to communicate effectively with humans. Doing so in a way that breaks through barriers that stop us from advancing, including the reticence we have to communicate honestly with other human beings. KEY TAKEAWAYS AI has been around longer than you think and has enhanced the job market rather than shrunk it. AI is a productivity tool.  Hand mundane tasks over to AI. Then take the time you save and be more creative. People open up more to an avatar that is tailored to them than they do with other humans. This is particularly helpful in healthcare settings. Gamers make good problem-solvers. Avatars learn. When asked about something they don´t know they seek the answer so are ready for repeat queries. Avatars providing directions means that nurses and doctors are not being stopped and spending time answering those questions. BEST MOMENTS ‘We really have to look at AI as just an incredibly advanced productivity tool.' ‘People tend to provide more accurate information to an avatar than they do to a human, in the medical space.' ‘AI is still very good at very specific things. It's not a general-purpose engine like we are as humans.'   EPISODE RESOURCES https://ihealthassist.prsonas.com/ https://www.prsonas.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/chuckrinker/ Spamming Zero Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/spamming-zero/id1626323789   ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Welcome back to another enlightening episode of "The Patients Speak" with Mark Stinson, where we fuse the realms of healthcare business and scientific innovation with the patient's voice to expedite their journey from diagnosis to wellness. Today, we're thrilled to have Chuck Rinker, a colon cancer survivor and the CEO of Prsonas, a company that pioneers a unique blend of human and AI technologies to enhance patient engagement and communication.Chuck's journey, from the world of EA Sports and gaming to his current role, is intriguing. His personal experiences as a patient and caregiver have informed his mission to create more personal patient communication. As Chuck explains, their technology is designed to focus on patient needs and is set to revolutionize healthcare in several ways.Chuck says, "From clinical outcomes to operational efficiencies, we've overlooked the impact on the patient's mental state and journey. Prsonas with a purpose, as we call it, fills the gap in healthcare technology."Prsonas' technology introduces digital communication avatars that improve the patient experience across various healthcare settings. A remarkable use case is helping patients navigate the labyrinthine hospital environment. In this role, the avatars serve as digital wayfinders and concierge services, ensuring patients can find their way, whether they speak English, Spanish, or even sign language. They make the healthcare system less burdensome for both patients and the staff.Chuck adds, "The ultimate goal is to provide a concierge service that speaks your language, is culturally sensitive, and helps you navigate the complex healthcare system."But what can healthcare learn from large corporations like Disney and Wrangler, who've mastered brand intimacy and one-on-one marketing? Chuck asserts that the healthcare system needs to shift its focus from treating patient populations to treating patients as individuals. Achieving brand intimacy, where patients feel represented, heard, and cared for, is key to retaining and attracting patients.Chuck's personal journey has fundamentally reshaped his work at Prsonas. Being thrust into the whirlwind of information and disinformation when facing a critical illness, Chuck was determined to place the patient at the center of healthcare technology. This shift in focus, from commercial success to patient success, led to the birth of "Personas with a Purpose."And what does Chuck say to his teams to ensure they maintain a patient-centric focus? He highlights the importance of creating a gaming-like experience, where each patient feels represented, cared for, and heard, rather than selling products. By creating an advocate who communicates on a personal level, healthcare can shift from focusing on patient populations to treating patients one-on-one.Chuck Rinker's story is an inspiring example of how personal experience and dedication can drive innovation in the healthcare field. You can find out more about Prsonas at ihealthassist.com and prsonas.com to explore their innovative solutions and philosophy.Chuck Rinker Chuck's Website @cjrinker on Instagram Chuck on YouTube At "The Patients Speak," we believe that embracing medical innovation and new technologies, combined with listening to patients' stories, is the path to better healthcare. Each of these documentary-style episodes was recorded on location - from the peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the deserts of California - in order to capture the sounds and stories of each place. You won't want to miss out, so make sure to subscribe! TODAY'S EPISODE When Rinker Buck decided to cross the Oregon Trail in an authentic 1883 wagon, he had no idea what to expect. "I knew that naïveté was the mother of adventure," he wrote, "I just didn't know how much of it I really had." For somebody like Rinker, who was interested in the history of the Oregon Trail, there were several easier, faster, and safer ways to explore it. But Rinker wasn't interested in them. He wanted, as he calls it, "the sensual feast of traveling in the open air;" the chance not just to learn about history, but to actually experience it. And so Rinker, his brother Nick, and their pack of three mules - Beck, Jake, and Bute - set off on a months-long journey that sent them through fields of blooming wildflowers, across turbulent rivers, beneath starry skies, and nearly over the sides of cliffs. And through it all, they came to see America's history - and the history of the West - not as it had been taught in school, but as it really was. Whether you're an Oregon Trail buff or you've never even played the computer game, this episode is sure to surprise, delight, and thoroughly entertain. Welcome to Integrative Cancer Solutions with Dr. Karlfeldt, where we delve into the challenges faced by cancer patients and explore alternative treatments. In this episode, we have a special guest, Chuck Rinker, who battled and conquered late-stage colon cancer. Now, he utilizes AI avatars to support patients on their healthcare journey. Our main focus is improving outcomes from the patient's perspective. We dive deep into understanding the disease, therapies, and prognosis. With a plethora of inaccurate information online, we discuss the frustration of navigating through outdated data and clinical trials. That's where our AI avatars come in. Chuck introduces us to iHealth Assist, a groundbreaking healthcare assistance product. These digital personalities provide accurate and personalized information to cancer patients. But let's not forget the importance of human interaction in healthcare. We explore the challenges and emphasize the need for improvement. At MD Anderson Center, they've implemented an office assist concierge service that utilizes an avatar to greet and assist patients in their preferred language. This technology maintains a human connection while improving communication and expediting their experience. We also discuss the integration of technology tools in healthcare to enhance efficiency and user experience. Digital avatars can tackle mundane tasks, allowing healthcare workers to focus on specialized care. They provide multilingual options, making the patient experience even better. But what about accuracy? We assure you that our AI avatars undergo active learning, vetted by a team to ensure reliable information. We prioritize human connection and engagement while improving operational efficiencies. Generative AI plays a vital role in healthcare's operational efficiencies and regenerative practices. By analyzing patient interactions, healthcare providers can better understand their needs and tailor services accordingly. This active learning loop leads to better patient experiences and informed decision-making. OpenAI and chat GPT are revolutionizing the healthcare industry. We stress the importance of a high confidence factor and active vetting by healthcare partners. And let's not forget the importance of relatable avatars. Photorealistic humans may creep us out, but human-like characters create emotional bonds. Avatars prove invaluable in clinical trials, aiding in patient consent and recruitment. By providing diverse avatar options, we ensure comfort and trust, especially among underrepresented groups. Female avatars are found to be 75% more trustworthy, enhancing engagement and success rates. But AI is not a replacement, it's a catalyst for human communication. We must maintain ethical control and proper data management. AI enhances human capabilities, just like the stethoscope did in the past. We address ethical and privacy concerns associated with this powerful tool. As AI avatars and human AI gain traction, we must remain open-minded and cautious to prevent misuse. Join us as we explore the potential of this powerful tool and share our personal experiences with cancer. Remember, the information we provide is for educational purposes only. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains some sensitive topics around the loss of a parent. Today I'm with my dear friend, Lizzie Braicks-Rinker, a wellness brand strategist and holistic health and fitness coach. We met in college, baking pie in the dorm basement, and bonded quickly; I told Lizzie my mom had passed away. She told me hers had cancer. We were at different stages in our lives than our peers, and because of this, had different needs and perspectives on wellness than they did, too.In 2022, Lizzie gave a TED Talk on Mother's Day about the difference between wellness and physical health. Her beliefs stemmed from her experience in college, when, on paper, she was extremely healthy – she was vegan, she was on the rowing team – and yet, she was having panic attacks and chronic pain due to the wellness pieces that were missing in her life. In this episode, Lizzie and I talk a lot about holistic wellness – especially social wellness, of course – and how, really, there is no one-size-fits-all recipe. In this episode you'll hear about:The eight pillars of holistic wellness (emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, financial) vs. the wellness industrial complexHow self-care looks different for everybody – it could involve playing with your dogs, getting your finances in order, or building a community support systemWhy social wellness is often left off the priority list of wellnessHow health (especially social health) – doesn't have to be linear; for example, your social needs might be higher in the summer than they are in the winterCreating the “third option” instead of accepting social obligations you're just not into – or, creating INTENTION in these obligations so they feel fulfilling to youWho is your true self vs. your ideal self? Plus, the importance of taking baby stepsResources & LinksLike what you hear? Visit my website, leave me a voicemail, and follow me on Instagram! Be sure to check out Lizzie's TED Talk and the book she recommended in this episode, The Worthy Project by Meadow DeVor, and follow her on Instagram and check out her website.Want to take this conversation a step further? Barges heading down the Mississippi River carry most of the United State's soy beans, corn and other crop exports to a global market. But, the river's role as a trade superhighway goes back hundreds if not thousand of years. In his new book “Life on the Mississippi” best-selling author Rinker Buck writes about floating from Pittsburgh to New Orleans in a wooden flat boat, following the same water routes taken by thousands of flatboats that carried goods downstream in the 19th century. MPR News guest host Chris Farrell talks with Rinker and a local river historian about the forgotten history of the flatboat era, modern river communities and why so many of us love the Mighty Mississippi. Rinker Buck is the author of “Life on the Mississippi: An Epic American Adventure” and is the New York Times bestselling author of “The Oregon Trail.” He lives in Tennessee.
