Welcome to the Personal Development Trailblazers Podcast! In today's episode, we're opening the door to a conversation most people avoid — the honest truth about how mental health struggles affect the way we show up for our kids.Meet Dr. Jenifer Price (also known as Dr. Jen). She is a therapist, coach, award-winning author, and speaker. Her sage advice has been featured on ABC, CBS, Fox and in Forbes. For over 25 years, Dr. Jen worked in education and counseling. After the pandemic, students started to share more about their mental health struggles and family issues. These conversations led Dr. Jen back to her therapeutic roots and a focus on supporting individual family members (ages 6 and up) to strengthen the overall family unit.Based on the needs of the client, she utilized an eclectic blend of evidence-based therapeutic modalities (e.g. CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, and somatic techniques). For those seeking rapid relief from trauma symptoms, Dr. Jen offers EMDR therapy. She believes addressing trauma, learning coping skills, and improving communication will elevate the individual and the family. Dr. Jen is a double graduate from The University of Texas at Austin (BA and MS). She earned a PhD at Old Dominion University; her research was published in a top 10 international academic journal. A long-time resident of Central Texas, Dr. Jen can be spotted at local farmer's markets, hike and bike trails, Austin FC soccer games with her son, or out shopping for shoes and vibrant lip colors.Connect with Jenifer Here: https://instagram.com/meetdrjenhttps://facebook.com/meetdrjenhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jeniferprice/https://etherapycare.com/dr-jenGrab the freebie here: Find Dr. Jen on IG @meetdrjen and DM "self-care" for a free self-care pdf===================================If you enjoyed this episode, remember to hit the like button and subscribe. Languaging Episode 16: NotesTitle: Languaging in Hampton RoadsEpisode 16 : How do you say Norfolk?Hosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue SalaskyDate: May 1, 2024Length: 34 minutesPublication Frequency: Fourth Friday of each monthIn this episode we finally get to the question that our listeners have been asking since Day 1: How do you say Norfolk? Anecdotally, we discovered that everyone accepted “NAHfuk” as the old-time pronunciation with some retaining it as a way to connect with their city of residence. Increasingly, though, perhaps as part of the so-called cot/caught merger and Southern vowel shift, today's speakers tend to use the “NORfuk” pronunciation. Both of those stress the first syllable with a reduction in the second syllable. There are others who stress the second syllable for a “NorFOLK” or “NorFORK” iteration. We talked about vowels and reference the IPA vowel chart, https://www.ipachart.com/. We also mention linguist Penelope Eckert's 1989 study, “Jocks and Burnouts: Social Categories and Identity in The High School.” It's readily available from various sources online. We had hoped to get a resolution on the matter of who says the city's name in what way by consulting Tidewater Voices, an online archive of interviews of locals conducted (and ongoing) by linguistics students at Old Dominion University in Norfolk over more than two decades. That simply muddied the waters as we found old-timers using the more contemporary sounding "NORfuk" and Gen Zs using "NAHfuk." To listen for yourself, go to https://digitalcommons.odu.edu/tidewatervoices/We travelled the streets of Norfolk and invited those at signature locations – Norfolk Botanical Gardens, The Perry Glass Studio at the Chrysler Museum of Art, Nauticus, Visit Norfolk, The Mermaid Factory, Doumar's Cones and Barbecue, and Norfolk Naval Station – to share their pronunciation of Norfolk along with information about their institution. We consulted Dr. Janet Bing, PhD, a retired linguist from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, and a specialist in phonology, to share her expertise on the topic. She broke the name down phonetically but attributed its varying pronunciations to social forces. Everyone agrees, though, that pronouncing the city's name as "NAHfuk" places you in the local category. International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for the Norfolk pronunciation variations: “NAHfuk” [‘na.fək], “NORfuk” [‘nɔr.fək], “NorFOLK” [nɔr'foʊk], “NorFORK” [nɔr'fɔrk].Send your questions and feedback to languagingHR@gmail.com.

What makes culture so powerful, and why do so many organizations get it wrong? Kevin sits down with organizational psychologist Laura Hamill to discuss the disconnect between the practice of culture and the science of culture. Laura defines culture not just as what's visible on the surface, but as the underlying "collective set of reasons why" behaviors occur in organizations. She explains why leaders must bridge the gap between aspirational values and actual workplace experiences and introduces the concept of cultural betrayal. The discussion also covers the difference between culture and climate, the role of middle managers in operationalizing values, and how behaviors and norms shape what is truly valued in the workplace. The life they taught her to build almost took her with it. For decades, Katina Barnes poured into families, mentored girls, launched programs, led ministries, and moved mountains with two-person teams. The world clapped. But no one asked what it cost. In this National Black Girl Month™ feature, Katina joins Felicia Ford and co-host Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown to name what many Black women are only starting to admit: that being “strong” is often a trap. That sometimes it takes collapsing in your own bed to realize what was never sustainable. That no matter how much good you're doing—you still deserve to live. This conversation is not a warning. It's a reckoning. If you've been performing strength while privately unraveling, If you've been told to push through while your body says no, If you've outgrown the expectations that once defined your worth— this episode is where you lay it down. You'll hear: How burnout disguises itself as achievement Why letting go of control isn't failure—it's survival What real boundaries sound like when they're held, not explained How to model wellness for the next generation without apology Why “being needed” can no longer be the measure of your value This is not about doing less. It's about doing what's yours to carry—and no more.

Jana is from Pikovice outside of Prague in Czechia and is very close with Former podcast guest Sara Kouskova as well as the other Czech players Klara Davidson Spilkova, Krystina Napaleova and Tereza Melecka. She would go to the States for a scholarship at Old Dominion University in Virginia going on to win an individual title while also competing in 6x European Amateur Team Championships for Czechia as well as winning All American honours after finishing 13th at NCAA Division 1. Jana would play a few events on tour as an Amateur including Czech Ladies Open on LET and Czech Ladies Challenge on LETAS. In 2022 Jana Melichova would make history by becoming only the 2nd player from Czech Republic to win on Ladies European Tour having won Czech Ladies Open by a shot defeating both fellow home favourite Klara Spilkova & the experienced Nicole Broch Estrup what makes it more impressive is Jana was still an Amateur! Shortly after turning pro in 2022 Jana's life would change forever with the sad unexpected passing if her beloved mother and Jana bravely opens up about the impact that this tragic unfortunate event has played a role in her life and how she is trying to become more open and honest about it with the assistance of a Mental Coach. For at least 10 mins Jana bravely, fearlessly and amazingly fully opens up about the last few years and I have nothing but pure respect and admiration to her for that! It was written in the stars in May of last year at Dutch Ladies Open as Jana would win for the 2nd time on Tour on what would have been her mothers 60th Birthday weekend so it was a highly emotional victory for her and let out floods of emotions as she capitalised on the mistakes of Kim Metraux coming down the stretch to win for 2nd time! Please be sure to Like, Subscribe,  Download while leaving some nice comments on Apple Podcasts, Podbean and Spotify and give this amazingly brave lady the love and support she needs. She deserves your listens! Powerful, raw and emotional and I hope you enjoy it!

“It is very much a collaborative group process. There are group meetings where we come to consensus on our different ratings. There's so much support from ONS staff, even amongst our different groups, even when you're assigned to one peer reviewer. Let's say you go on vacation, sometimes we're paired with other people, too. So there is some flexibility in the opportunity as well,” Holly Tenaglia, DNP, APRN, AGCNS-BC, OCN®, lecturer at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a conversation about what oncology nurses need to know about breast cancer treatment.  Music Credit: “Fireflies and Stardust” by Kevin MacLeod  Licensed under Creative Commons by Attribution 3.0   Episode Notes   Complete this evaluation for free NCPD. And then as you'll see on the symptom intervention resource, you'll see kind of a snapshot of what our recommendations are for applying it to practice.” TS 7:46  “I am a clinical nurse specialist and now that I work in academia, this is a very important skill for me to build and have in my profession. Also, those group meetings that we have, I really appreciated being able to learn from others and then being able to teach that to others. So in this second round, for example, the thing that I've really enjoyed personally is actually being able to mentor somebody that maybe hasn't done it as often and just being able to watch them grow and improve in their skills while you provide feedback.” TS 9:05  “We get a new article about every two weeks, and this involves about a week for myself and then about a week or less than that for my partner to go through this process as well. So being able to manage your time to afford your partner the time to solidly look through the article as well. And then being able to collaborate and receive feedback from your peers.” TS 13:06  “There have been times where the evidence has not given us the results that I think we were assuming we would see. And so while the standardized tools mitigate some of the bias, we do recognize that it won't remove the bias entirely, but it does help make your view more objective. What are some common misconceptions about developing symptom intervention resources? I'd say personally, I don't know if I had misconceptions before I was part of the team as much as I just didn't know what the process entailed.” TS 18:18  “ONS is really committed to the growth of its members. I've really enjoyed being part of this volunteer opportunities and the other ones that I've been a part of. So truly, if you have a passion for something and you have the skills, ONS would love to have you and you will meet some of the greatest people in doing these opportunities. I've made some of the best connections and friendships through the volunteer opportunities I've done.” TS 21:35

Col. William "Burner" Dunn, former military attack helicopter pilot, shares his insights into the tragic collision in Washington, DC. He and his team currently support U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), Marine Forces Central Command (MARCENT), U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM), U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), and Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) around the world. In the aftermath of the devastating aviation disaster in Washington, DC—the worst in America since 2009—decorated veteran military attack helicopter pilot Colonel William “Burner” Dunn provides expert analysis. Colonel Dunn is a combat-proven pilot who has flown dozens of missions in some of the world’s most volatile war zones. He shares his no-nonsense, informed perspective on how this tragedy could have occurred in one of the world’s most heavily monitored air corridors. His military helicopter pilot expertise and credibility make him an invaluable voice in understanding this tragic event. He is a military attack helicopter pilot who has flown in and around Washington, DC. With decades of experience navigating high-stakes aerial operations, Colonel Dunn can tell us more about: -Why this military helicopter training flight might have veered into Reagan National Airport's flight path -The strengths and vulnerabilities of the Blackhawk UH-60 helicopter that collided with the American Eagle flight as it was about to land in Reagan National Airport -The 12th Aviation Battalion, based out of Fort Belvoir, which provides helicopter transportation and “technical rescue support” to the National Capital Region -Whether Washington, DC’s crowded airspace—encompassing Reagan National, Dulles, BWI, Andrews Air Force Base, and more—poses systemic risks to aviation safety William Dunn is the President of Strategic Resilience Group, LLC. It's that time again - Time for another episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast! Prepare to be inspired as we sit down with Lyndsey Duty, Environmental Scientist from Tampa, FL, in the latest episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast! Join us as Lyndsey takes us on a journey through her love of nature, the path that led her to WGI, and her adventures beneath the waves. From Landlocked Beginnings to Underwater Explorer Lyndsey grew up in York, Pennsylvania, a small rural town surrounded by farmland, where she spent her childhood exploring the outdoors. Her fascination with nature began early, as she eagerly searched for salamanders, snakes, and bugs to collect in her “bug box” or spent time caring for box turtles in a pen her dad built. Despite being far from the ocean, her curiosity about wildlife planted the seeds for a lifelong passion. It wasn't until 2015, on a family vacation to Jamaica, that Lyndsey discovered her love for diving. She and her father completed their diving certifications together, and from that moment, her underwater adventures began. Now living in Florida, one of the best places for diving, Lyndsey takes every opportunity to explore the underwater world, marveling at rare sights like frogfish mating rituals and seahorses releasing eggs. How Smart Market Timing Built My 25-Year Recruitment Practice, with Brock Boyd, Ep #238

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 12, 2024 64:15

"Work hardest when times are best, not worst" - this counterintuitive philosophy helped Brock Boyd build a 25-year tech recruitment empire that's survived three major market crashes. When Brock Boyd started his recruitment firm in 1998, he ran his business from his bedroom in a shared house, where suited colleagues would show up to work daily - sometimes while he was still sleeping from late-night prospecting.  Today, 25 years later, he's a member of the prestigious Pinnacle Society leading an international tech sales recruitment practice. Through multiple market cycles - from the dot-com crash to 2008's recession to today's tech slowdown - Brock has built Career Management Inc. (CMI) into a sustainable business while developing wealth-building principles that have given him true financial freedom. Episode Outline and Highlights: [01:49] How a friend needing a ride to a job fair led to recruitment. [04:27] Taking the entrepreneurial leap after just 11 months! [10:47] Recalling the early days: Cold calling from his bedroom while colleagues showed up in suits. [15:26] Discussion of peak performance periods: 1999-2000 and 2021-2022. [18:17] Focus on resilience: Surviving 2002 and the $63,000 bankruptcy challenge [24:22] "I work by far the hardest in the best of times" - Brock's contrarian business philosophy [27:47] Smart financial moves most recruiters miss: The "two boulders" theory [38:51] How to retire early as recruiters: The three key factors [54:56] Tech stack deep dive: What works in modern recruitment [1:03:19] Understanding market cycles: "It's like winter and spring will come" Building a Recession-Proof Tech Sales Recruitment Practice After being hired by a staffing firm, Brock launched his own business after only 11 months! He had a fascinating story of finding his way into permanent staffing without really having much of a background before starting his recruitment firm. From solo operator to leading an international team, Brock has built Career Management Inc. (CMI) into a sustainable practice over 25 years. Starting with just three clients in 1998, he strategically evolved from general sales to specialized tech sales recruitment. Here is his firm's current structure: 3.5 full-desk recruiters (US-based) 2.5 candidate-focused recruiters International support team across Argentina, Colombia, Philippines, and India Support staff handling administrative and database work Below are the key success factors that helped his business thrive over the years, through multiple market cycles, including the dot-com crash, the 2008 recession, and the current tech slowdown, while growing sustainably through each recovery. Early specialization in tech sales (higher fees vs general sales) Lean operations during growth years Strategic investment in revenue-generating tools Counter-cyclical work approach: highest effort during boom markets Maintaining core tools during downturns while cutting non-essential costs Personal Finance & Wealth Building for Recruiters A topic that resonates well with me is how Brock gives value to personal finance and wealth building for people in the recruitment industry. Most successful recruiters earn exceptional income, yet struggle to build lasting wealth in the long term. Brock has been a great example of turning his recruitment earnings into true financial freedom through disciplined investing and smart money management. He shared his mindset and strategies on how he balances his investment strategy with different instruments and risks.  Below are some core best practices he shared on the topic of personal finance: Keep lifestyle expenses well below earnings, especially in good years Never invest more than 10% of total assets in any single investment Maintain substantial cash reserves to buy assets during downturns Focus on three key areas: work earnings, investment earnings, and lifestyle costs "The further below your earnings your lifestyle and spending are, the faster you're going to get to financial freedom. And the closer they are, or God forbid they're overlapped in the wrong direction, then the further away that is." This disciplined approach has helped Brock build sustainable wealth through multiple market cycles while many recruiters, despite high earnings, struggle with long-term financial security. “Working Hardest in the Best of Times” "Work hardest when times are best, not worst" - this counterintuitive philosophy helped Brock Boyd build a 25-year tech recruitment empire that's survived three major market crashes.  Brock's work ethic revolves around maintaining resilience through challenging times while recognizing the role of external factors. Uniquely, Brock works hardest during prosperous times, moderately during stable periods, and least during downturns. He views this approach as a strategic response to the opportunity cost, focusing energy where returns are likely highest. This pragmatic mindset helps him stay balanced and focused despite industry fluctuations. In this live episode from the American Marketing Association (AMA) conference in Las Vegas, Mallory sits down with Christian Ponce, AVP for Marketing at Old Dominion University. They discuss the powerful intersection of AI and KPI development in higher education marketing. Christian shares how AI tools like Elephant AI streamline KPI generation, offering marketers valuable insights and efficiency. This episode dives into the practical applications of AI for setting and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs), particularly in campaign planning and execution, to maximize productivity and foster a sense of belonging within teams.Key TakeawaysAI in KPI Development: AI can expedite the traditionally time-consuming process of creating and tracking KPIs, transforming hours of work into mere minutes.AI as a Support Tool, Not a Replacement: AI is meant to enhance your strategic thinking, not replace it, by providing structured guidance and suggestions.Enhanced Productivity and Learning: Engaging with AI tools can reduce research time, educate users on key metrics like NPS, and offer solutions for campaign optimization.Cultivating Belonging in Remote Teams: The keynote on inclusivity highlights the impact of fostering belonging within teams, which can directly affect productivity and satisfaction. Why Inclusivity Matters in Marketing Teams Christian reflects on the keynote's emphasis on inclusion, noting the scientific evidence that humans are wired for belonging. This biological need for inclusion impacts productivity and job satisfaction. For remote and distributed teams, creating a culture where every member feels valued and connected is essential, particularly in high-stakes environments like higher education marketing. Christian stresses that understanding the neurological effects of rejection helps drive home the importance of inclusive marketing and team dynamics.AI-Powered KPI Development in Higher EducationChristian shares how AI tools are transforming the process of KPI development. Traditionally, setting KPIs required significant time, involving deep dives into institutional goals, marketing objectives, and strategic planning. With AI, marketers can streamline this process by inputting basic campaign information and receiving immediate, actionable insights. Christian uses Elephant AI to prompt the tool with campaign goals and in seconds receives recommendations for brand awareness, perception tracking, and conversions. This shift saves time and allows for a greater focus on refining strategic priorities. How AI Can Assist, Not Replace, Strategic Thinking In a role like Christian's, AI serves as a productivity booster rather than a replacement for strategic input. He explains that, rather than generating ideas independently, AI supports tasks by eliminating the “blank page” problem and speeding up ideation. For example, he uses AI to produce sample KPIs and adjust them as necessary. AI also offers tools and methods to measure metrics like Net Promoter Score (NPS), including recommendations for survey platforms and calculation techniques. This level of assistance allows Christian to focus on strategic adjustments, while AI handles the administrative legwork.Real-Life Examples of AI-Driven Campaign Iteration Christian emphasizes how AI can assist in ongoing campaign management, especially in situations where a campaign isn't performing as expected. When faced with underwhelming results, he can input current data into the AI tool and receive suggestions, such as tweaking headlines or adjusting messaging to boost engagement. This approach allows Christian to iterate on campaigns more efficiently, testing new ideas and refining strategies based on real-time insights from AI suggestions. The Importance of Starting with AI, Even with Time Constraints Mallory shares her experience of using AI for KPI exercises at Enrollify. By inputting detailed data on past performance and desired outcomes, she received insights that would have otherwise taken hours to develop. For marketers on the fence about learning AI due to time constraints, Christian and Mallory agree that investing time to familiarize oneself with AI tools pays off in the long run. The efficiency gained from AI not only saves time but also enhances one's strategic approach, empowering higher education marketers to achieve more with less effort. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Title: Languaging in Hampton Roads Episode 8 : Road Trip in Hampton Roads: Uncovering the Origins of Geographical Names Hosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue Salasky Date: Sept. 5, 2024 Length: 31:45 min Publication Frequency: Fourth Friday (approx)  of each month Co-hosts Jill Winkowski and Prue Salasky take a road trip to the far corners of Hampton Roads in S.E. Va. They're in search of the provenance of the names, Elephant's Fork in Suffolk, Cuffeytown in Chesapeake, and Chic's Beach in Virginia Beach, and what those names tell us about the history and culture of the region.  The duo talk about toponymy, or the study of place names, and semiotics, the study of signs, and how those disciplines apply to their discoveries.  They share the rules and regulations involved in the official naming process. At the state level there's the Virginia Board on Geographic Names: Senior Map Archivist, Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad St. Richmond, Va. 23219; 804-692-3617; vabgn@lva.virginia.gov. Nationally, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, BGN, was fully established in 1947; its naming conventions include allowing only 5 places nationwide to have names that include an apostrophe (Martha's Vineyard is one of them). The BGN works closely with state, tribal and local governments, as well as the general public. At Elephant's Fork the duo uncover a community recognition of the name but no understanding of how it came to be; subsequent research, including the use of the free digitized archive of Virginia newspapers, virginiachronicle.com, unearthed its origin in a giant tin elephant used to advertise the emporium of one H.J. Bowen in 1903.  Stories attached to the name included that of Mary Chapman, as recorded in Tidewater Voices,  https://digitalcommons.odu.edu/tidewatervoices, an ongoing digital archive project of Old Dominion University in Norfolk; and that of Angelo Scott, a current Suffolk resident, who recounted his perceived experience of abrupt integration as a 2nd-grader in 1971. At Cuffeytown, a historic community in Chesapeake founded by free blacks in the 1700 they recount their difficulties in finding the historic Cuffeytown cemetery, the final resting place for the Cuffeytown 13. These were Civil War veterans who fought for the Union. Crops at peak growth prevented their access. They did visit the AME Zion Church, founded in 1866, and learned there the identities of the 13 veterans, almost half of them Cuffeys. (See the below list)  5th USCT  Pvt. Walter Smith, Co. I 10th USCT Sgt. William Coffey, Co. G Pvt. Bluet Cuffey, Co. H Corp. Emerson Cuffey, Co. G Pvt. Lemuel Cuffey, Co. F Sgt. Wilson Cuffey, Co. H Sgt. William Cuffey, Co. F Corp. William Sevils, Co. H Pvtd. Cornelius Smith, Co. F Pvt. James W. Smith, Co. F Pvt. Samuel Smith, Co. H Pvt. John Whitehurst, Co. H 36th USCT Sgt. Thomas Van, Co. C From there the intrepid pair took the back roads to Chic's Beach in Virginia Beach, whose recorded history dates back to Native Americans and then the earliest European settlers, but whose current nickname harks back to the mid-20th century. The bayfront neighborhood, officially called Chesapeake Beach, saw a flurry of real estate dealings in the early part of the 20th century and was built out by the 1960s. Local lore attributes the nickname that stuck, Chic's Beach, to one Luther ‘Chic' Ledington who operated a hot dog stand in a beachfront building until 1967.  There's so much to learn from the names we see around us daily! The true story of a trailblazing detective's search for a beautiful college coed who vanished without a trace. In 1981, detective Kay Schucker was the lead investigator in the high-profile missing persons case of Old Dominion University student Janice Starr. The beautiful co-ed disappeared without a trace from ODU's Norfolk, Virginia campus. Among the only leads was Janice's diary, which included detailed journal entries about her daily activities. As Kay studied the diary—going several years back—she learned that Janice, a US Army veteran, had faced the same challenges in the military that Kay did in law enforcement. They were both women trying to succeed in a man's world. Feeling a kinship toward Janice, Kay became consumed with unraveling the mystery of Janice's disappearance and possible death. As the investigation unfolded, Kay began to suspect that Janice had an affair with her ROTC professor at ODU, Army captain Dwight Beddingfield—a well-respected family man married with three kids. Kay was warned by superiors to tread lightly in her investigation of Beddingfield and cautioned not to dig too deeply. But she soon uncovered a life insurance scheme and discovered that Janice had been assigned a series of dangerous tasks by Captain Beddingfield. Did these circumstances play a role in Janice's demise? Was the highly regarded Beddingfield actually a killer? If so, what did he do with Janice's remains?
