Kim Lewis credits her community for helping her get over her doubts about the purpose of her natural hair care line, and says they helped her realize all the good she was really doing. Kim believes how you feel about your hair can give you the confidence you need to go after your dreams. Kim shares with Jeanne all her struggles with hair care from a young age, why she turned down the sharks on ABC's Shark Tank, the kismet of finding the perfect location for her business, and at the end of the day how the relationships with our closest family and friends can make or break our success. About Kim: She's the creator of CurlMix, a Chicago-based brand of hair products for curly hair. Their mission is to serve Black women and create clean, natural hair products that are so easy and effective to use. Kim's journey into entrepreneurship began after her husband Tim's amazing "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" win, where he put his knowledge of random facts to good use by winning $100,000.00. After her first failed startup of a niche social network, Kim launched CurlMix in 2015, which started as a Do-It- Yourself box for curly hair. After two years of stagnation, Kim sought advisors and pivoted CurlMix in January 2018. She turned their best- selling boxes into a complete hair-care line. After turning down a six-figure deal on Shark Tank in 2019, CurlMix's sales catapulted to $6 million in annual revenue. In 2020, the Lewises landed on the Forbes' "30 under 30" list, and Kim was included in Crain's Chicago Business' "20 in Their 20s" list. After landing on Oprah's Favorite Things, CurlMix was listed at #93 on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing, privately-owned companies in America.Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube: @curlmix | Instagram: @kimlewisceoKimlewisceo.com

If you're a long-time fan of Shark Tank, you know the iconic line “and for those reasons, I'm out” when a Shark bows out of a potential deal. It's rare however, that the entrepreneur seeking an investment actually turns down a Shark, but that's exactly what today's guest did. Kim Lewis is the CEO and co-founder of haircare brand CurlMix, appearing on Season 10 of Shark Tank with her co-founder and husband and ultimately rejecting Robert Herjavec's offer of $400,000 for 20% of her business. Despite not landing a deal, CurlMix has since done $20 million in lifetime sales and successfully raised funds by leaning on their own community. In today's case study, Kim gives us the unique launch strategy behind her equity crowdfunding campaign that raised $1 million in 4 hours - and ultimately $4.5 million from 8,000 everyday investors, many of whom are CurlMix customers. Kim Lewis is the Owner and Founder of the award-winning winery, Ole' Orleans Wines. Known as the "heart and soul" of the company, Kim infused the creole and cajun roots of New Orleans to create a collection of well-balanced wines that are perfect for any occasion. What started as a dream has now become one of the fastest-growing black-owned wineries in the south. Ole' Orleans has a vast collection of wines, 12 of which have been featured on the shelves of major retailers such as Trader Joe's and Costco Wholesale. Most recently, the winery was named a 2022 Rodeo Uncorked! three-time medalist. As a New Orleans native, Kim embraces everything that is "Naturally Nawlins" and continues to show her love for the city, its people, and its rich history. In this episode… Kim Lewis is making history with her brand, Ole' Orleans Wines. It's a woman and minority-owned business and the first-ever winery in New Orleans. So how did Kim launch her brand and generate massive success? Embedded in community and culture, Ole' Orleans Wines has found a home in the hearts of local and national consumers alike. Founded in 2018, the winery stemmed from Kim's passion to honor historic moments and historic sites in the city. For people who have migrated back to their roots in New Orleans, the city isn't exactly what it used to be. Many venues have since disappeared, and the community yearns for those memories. So, Kim created Ole' Orleans to kindle the nostalgia for what used to be. Now, consumers all over the US can experience the culture of the city and create new, lasting memories through their wines.  In this episode of VINTed, Scout Driscoll sits down with Kim Lewis, Owner and Founder of the award-winning winery, Ole' Orleans Wines. Kim shares her inspiration for starting the brand, how each wine tells a story of the city, and the importance of connecting with your consumers to create a memorable experience. It seemed rather unusual to start a winery in the heart of New Orleans (turns out there is actual wine history in Louisiana).  Her story is compelling and inspiring. Hear how she left college, started a company, decided on a new career and made it happen.  Kim Lewis checks all the boxes; a woman, a woman of color, an entrepreneur, a wine maker, a mother and a flat out producer.
