Podcast by Matt Meiselman
Rufus Peabody and I discuss a series of topics that are at most only indirectly related to sports betting, including things like randomness, self-awareness, identity and mindfulness.
Podcast #25 - Episode From My Brother's Podcast - with Kevin Meiselman by Matt Meiselman
Podcast #24 - Communicating Effectively About Our Differences - with Jordan Rosenblum by Matt Meiselman
Derek Carty is the creator of the MLB projection system known as THE BAT, available at Rotogrinders.com and also through Fangraphs.com. We break down some of the core predictive issues in sports betting and DFS, common misconceptions, and potential solutions. We mostly focus on baseball, but touch on some other sports as well.
Jordan Rosenblum and I discuss the value of life, mathematically! (kind of). Inspired by a Sam Harris conversation with anti-natalist David Benatar, we talk about the symmetry/asymmetry of good and bad, the distinction between non-existence and death, and many more fascinating subjects...
Former Trackman associates Aidan Hanlon and Ben Drozdoff join the Preaching Sense Podcast for a discussion that alternates between very unique baseball commentary and a breakdown of some of the hardest parts of playing daily fantasy sports.
Ben Drozdoff joins yet again as we check in on the early stages of the MLB season. We discuss swinging strikes, traditional views, bullpens, managing rosters, and just a little bit of a math. Bunts are bad, defense doesn't matter #Moneyball.
The Preaching Sense Podcast returns after a brief hiatus with an episode about the mind. Jordan Rosenblum joins for a discussion about anxiety, depression, mental health, and drugs. Some meaningful and/or meaningless things to clarify: -Some of our arguments seem to change and evolve as the conversation progresses. This is a normal thing in human interaction. Don't draw finite conclusions about our arguments until you reach the end. Or do. But know that these initial thoughts may not represent what we really mean. This topic is more nuanced than most. -A lexicographer is a person who compiles dictionaries. You are now a better lexicographer for knowing this. -Neither of us view mental disorders as concrete conditions (in most cases) but rather much more dynamic "disorderly states" that can adapt, change, worsen, or even dissipate. I am currently confident this is the correct way to view issues of the mind, but am open to new information...
On this episode, friends of Preaching Sense (Daniel Stermer, Brett Altman, and Jordan Rosenblum) recap a trip across Europe. We talked about our tumultuous journey to Denmark, a Spanish festival called Las Fallas, and also some of the differences between the American political system and Scandinavian political systems. Our friend Jordan is a bit of an expert on this last subject. Lots to learn!
Sterm and I talk to fellow Terp Ryan Goldfarb about his new real estate business: Berry Lane Partners. We cover Ryan's background and path to starting his own unusual career, animosity towards nine to fives (classic), taking control of your own life, Terps basketball, sports betting, and more!
Rob Lawless started a project called Robs10kfriends, with the goal of meeting 10,000 new people (for an hour each!). Today, I was #724. We talked about both of our back stories and how we found ourselves along our respective current career trajectories. We went in depth on Rob's project, my gambling background, and the similarities between podcasting and meeting new people.
Part 2 with Mike Lefkowitz, who talks about a falling out with 2 of his friends. Sort of a sad episode! Characters mentioned: Dan Wynn, Mike Schwartz, Melissa Bagli, Jeff Granat, Jordan Rosenblum, Max Reich.
Inside the mind of a Trump voter (again!) who may or may not be too optimistic about his president’s intentions. We recap Trump’s first week in office, evaluate Trump’s insanity and his “possible” intelligence, and talk about where pro-choicers have gone too far. We also cover intricacies of women’s issues in the workforce, ethical responsibilities, lunacy of the Muslim ban, and unintended consequences.
The Preaching Sense Podcast flies in Jordan Rosenblum all the way from Denmark for a light-lunged (I mean light-hearted) conversation about education, Cristopher Nolan, the founding fathers, political correctness and free speech, Derek Jeter's eternal baseball career, absolute and relative meaning, Thomas Jones (and why Jamaal Charles should get more carries than him in 2005), and Bernie Sanders.
Daniel "Sterm" Stermer, Matt "Kapy" Kaplan, Max "Max" Reich, and I talk about New Year's Resolutions, nutrition, strange foods (like scary strange foods), geography & maps (not sure why this always comes up), having children and how to decide if you're ready, and the Ronda Rousey fight. Lots to learn here!
One of my oldest friends Brandon Klausner joins us as we dissect and dismantle two of the largest constructs in American culture: football and religion.
Friend of the show (and friend in real life) Lee joins us for a pretty risqué discussion: We talk about marriage, relationships, courtship, Twitter, and offending people. Lee has some pretty interesting life experiences, and a lot of experience in general (he's old). Follow him on Twitter @NakedHangover.
An episode that will make you question everything you've ever known! Sterm and I discuss Westworld (*Spoiler alert for those who haven't caught up to Westworld episode 8 'Aired 11/20/16'. Fast forward past the first 5:30 if you don't want to hear any spoilers!*), robots, artificial intelligence, social constructs, political correctness (yes, we do love this topic). This one gets pretty intense. Enjoy!
Max Reich joins the podcast (without Daniel Stermer...sorry Sterm) to talk about Thanksgiving eve (yay!), Donald Trump (obviously.), Canada (what?), Kanye(please come on the podcast? please kanye! Also FU Kanye.), Joe Rogan (hey Joe!). Plenty of other stuff too!
Noah Kirsch joins us to recap the election, Nate Silver's projections, Nate Silver's hair, protestors, and some other depressing shit. But we also talk about UFC 205! And other sports! Things that don't make us as sad!
My oldest friend Greg Ehrenberg and I discuss daily fantasy sports, planets, comedy, social media, voting, internet outrage, and infomercials. Greg currently writes columns for basketballmonster.com and gives daily fantasy advice via twitter @gehrenbergdfs (which we may have mentioned a few times). Greg also occasionally says funny stuff. Also, I want to apologize to the ShamWow guy for suggesting you might be dead. You are not dead. That is good news. Maybe..
In our most politically oriented episode yet, I talk to Mike Lefkowitz, who is probably the biggest supporter of Donald Trump that I know. The goal here was to hit on as many political issues as possible and get a perspective from someone who feels that Donald Trump is a better choice for president than Hillary Clinton, which is exceedingly rare in this part of the country. We disagree fairly strongly on who would make a better president, and we disagree on many specific points as well, but this was surprisingly a very thorough and reasonable discussion, at least from my perspective. I’ve been constantly preaching rationality, willingness to listen, and level-headedness in conversation, and I think this is a good example of how all of those things can be done effectively. Perhaps I was too easy on him, but I guess you’ll have to decide for yourself!
Long time listener (Anonymous) Braunstein joins us for an extensive discussion about law school(congrats man!), LinkedIn, funny noises, anonymity, political correctness, cool parties, Facebook, fame, wealth, Netflix, HBO, Halloween, and holy shit this is a long list of topics... enjoy!
Sterm and I reunite with The Chief "aka Andrew Harrison". We talk about some very politically incorrect shit, including torture, religion, bombing Russia, and Bruce Springsteen!
Matt Meiselman, Daniel Stermer, and long lost friend Jordan Rosenblum discuss far away places, social norms, self improvement, and the meaning of life. Choppy audio for the first 2-3 minutes so bear with us. It'll be worth it, guaranteed or your money back!
The first podcast for www.PreachingSense.com. Name of this podcast still TBD. Daniel Stermer and I talk about sports, why we don't really like sports anymore, TV, education, how to give advice, and how to have discussions, with a lot of nonsense in between.
