Adam Kirsch, poet, critic and editor at the Wall Street Journal, discusses his widely debated book, On Settler Colonialism: Ideology, Violence and Justice. The settler-colonialism prism, especially in the wake of October 7, is a textbook example of the use and abuse of academic theories for political ends – how and why has it come to be? Kirsch offers an historical genealogy as well as a contemporary analysis. The episode is sponsored by the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History at UCLA and co-hosted by Prof David N. Myers.

Was kannst du tun? Was können wir als einzelne Menschen tun, um Strukturen zu hinterfragen und das System gerechter, sicherer und empathischer zu machen? Ein ehrliches Gespräch über Verantwortung, Veränderung – und den Mut hinzuschauen. Griffin Kirsch built a $200 million AUM firm in just five years—while maintaining a 70% profit margin. Delivering high-touch planning to business owners and real estate investors without charging fees on those assets, Griffin's focus on providing hard-dollar value to his clients (especially around tax strategy and real estate decisions) has fueled deep trust and strong referral-driven growth. Griffin is the owner of GK Wealth Management, an RIA based out of Nevada that oversees $200 million in assets under management for 450 households. In this episode, he shares how his unconventional model helped him scale quickly, how proactive outreach to businesses during the COVID pandemic sparked major momentum, and why he segments clients by complexity rather than AUM. He also explains how he developed partnerships with CPAs that generate ongoing referrals, as well as how outsourcing investments and empowering junior advisors allow the firm to grow sustainably—without necessarily relying on him at the center. The thought of showing your financials to your employees may be unsettling. We've known remodelers who are so leery of sharing their numbers, their field crews don't even know their project budgets. Today we have an amazing human being as our guest. Her name is Jennifer Kirsch and she is the mother of three children, one with Down Syndrome. She tells us the story of how her life changed when William was born, how she learned to trust God in the process, and to see William as an integral part of the Body of Christ. While parenting William, God put a mission on her heart to teach Catholic schools and parishes how to see the inherent value in all of God's children and to create programs that allow children with special needs to thrive with their typically developing children. This program is called Shepherd them All. I have always loved learning from Jennifer and I think you will love her today too! https://www.shepherdthemall.orgDo you have a teen girl in your life? "Let George Do It" was a compelling American radio drama series broadcast from 1946 to 1954. Created by Owen and Pauline Vinson, it starred Bob Bailey as private investigator George Valentine, later voiced by Olan Soule. The show transitioned from sitcom-style episodes to thrilling private eye stories, directed by Don Clark. George Valentine's services were advertised in the newspaper, and he worked with his secretary Claire Brooks (voiced by various actresses). The show featured recurring characters like Sonny, Caleb, and Lieutenant Riley. John Hiestand announced the episodes, and the music evolved from a full orchestra to an organ.

Danny Kirsch returns to Market On Close and talks about all things volatility. With markets still reeling from Trump's tariffs, he sees investors derisking and standing by in "wait" mode until there's more clarity or cutbacks in tariffs. He doesn't see much upside investment potential as VIX lingers in the 20s range. However, Danny talks about trading volatility as investors pull out their portfolios.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

As both a much published poet and cultural critic, Adam Kirsch brings an etymological sensibility to the great issues of our day. In his new book, On Settler Colonialism, Kirsch excavates the nonsense now taken for granted by many academics about the supposedly twin intrinsic evils of American and Israeli history. Unlike the European colonialists in America, Kirsch reminds us, Jewish settlers in Palestine didn't wipe out the “indigenous” peoples of the region. While that doesn't necessarily excuse the violence of the Zionist state, Kirsch acknowledges, it does remind us that packaging America and Israel as the evil “settler colonial” twins of world history is both childishly simplistic and wrong. Words matter in politics, Kirsch reminds us. Particularly in a conflict as irresolvable as the Palestine/Israel tragedy. Adam Kirsch is the author of several books of poetry and criticism. A 2016 Guggenheim Fellow, Kirsch is an editor at the Wall Street Journal's Weekend Review section and has written for publications including The New Yorker and Tablet. He lives in New York.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. We open with some listener hate mail about one of our last ep's, and discuss why we should stay out of the Middle East on every level. What's up with the war on pets in Calgary - and should council be getting involved in this type of thing. Hate speech, residential school denialism, crime in Canada are all compared and discussed. What about these drones? We have to discuss how Ottawa and Parliament has gone crazy the last couple of days. Are the liberals and their thespian leader finally done? What are the MAID stats from 2023? Why is that that the Scouts survey in Canada says that kids can't cope? What is up in Cali and the Emergency State with Bird Flu, a timeline of Singapore transition - what do we think of the benevolent dictator if this is the result? This week's episode of @Notevend2 features professional trainer, Mitchell Kirsch. Mitchell has grown into one of the top trainers in the North East- specifically in his home state, New Hampshire. Mitchell has changed the culture of training within basketball by using the constrain-led and skill acquisition approach during his training sessions. Kirsch started his college career in California where he attended Claremont-Mudd Scripps. After four years of basketball playing for the Stags, he transferred to Babson College. A successful college career opened opportunities for Mitchell to play professionally overseas in Columbia. A short overseas career led Mitch to get into the player development field. His evidence based trainings became the lead method in the state of New Hampshire. Mitchell now trains players at all levels, including NBA players like Duncan Robinson, Terrance Mann, and Georges Niang.Hear about Kirsch's career getting into player development, what made him adapt the constraint-led approach, and how it feels having changed the New Hampshire hoop scene. After the Fed trimmed another 25BPS from interest rates and guided 50BPS in cuts for 2025, Danny Kirsch says the FOMC has reason to back its decision. He believes the U.S. economy is strong enough to warrant the Fed curbing its expectations from September. As for the state of the markets, he worries about long-positioning and market breadth getting too thin. Danny also dives into Tesla's (TSLA) gamma squeeze to offer a closer look at its parabolic stock spike. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Power dynamics in the Middle East shifted dramatically this year. In Lebanon, Israel dealt a severe blow toHezbollah, and another crucial ally of Iran—Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria—was toppled by insurgents. But the historian Rashid Khalidi is skeptical that these changes will set back the Palestinian cause, as it relates to Israel. “This idea that the Palestinians are bereft of allies assumes that they had people who were doing things for their interest,” Khalidi tells David Remnick, “which I don't think was true.” The limited responses to the war in Gaza by Iran and Hezbollah, Khalidi believes, clearly demonstrate that Iran's so-called Axis of Resistance “was designed by Iran to protect the Iranian regime. . . . It wasn't designed to protect Palestine.” Khalidi, a professor emeritus at Columbia University, is the author of a number of books on Palestinian history; among them, “The Hundred Years' War on Palestine” has been particularly influential. The book helped bring the term “settler colonialism” into common parlance, at least on the left, to describe Israel's relationship to historic Palestine. Sometimes invoked as a term of opprobrium, “settler colonialism” is strongly disputed by supporters of Israel. Khalidi asserts that the description is historically specific and accurate. The early Zionists, he says, understood their effort as colonization. “That's not some antisemitic slur,” he says. “That's the description they gave themselves.” The concept of settler colonialism has been applied, on the political left, to describe Israel's founding, and to its settlement of the Palestinian-occupied territories. This usage has been disputed by supporters of Israel and by thinkers including Adam Kirsch, an editor at the Wall Street Journal, who has also written about philosophy for The New Yorker. “Settler colonialism is . . . a zero-sum way of looking at the conflict,” Kirsch tells David Remnick. “In the classic examples, it involves the destruction of one people by another and their replacement over a large territory, really a continent-wide territory. That's not at all the history of Israel and Palestine.” Kirsch made his case in a recent book, “On Settler Colonialism: Ideology, Violence, and Justice.” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

On this episode of Lochhead on Marketing, we dive deep with fellow Category Pirate Katrina Kirsch into the critical importance of clarity in marketing. We explore the common pitfalls that entrepreneurs and marketers face when trying to articulate their points of view (POVs) and the challenges of standing out in a crowded marketplace. This episode will break down the key insights from their discussion, and offer thorough explanations & actionable advice to help you refine your marketing strategies. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. Katrina Kirsch on the Challenge of Clarity in Marketing Christopher opens the discussion by highlighting a prevalent issue: many marketing messages are convoluted and fail to convey the core message clearly. He points out that when potential customers visit a company's website, they often leave feeling confused about what the business actually does. This confusion stems from the tendency of companies to overcomplicate their messaging, using jargon and clever phrasing that ultimately obscures their value proposition. Katrina agrees, sharing her experiences with creatives who often fall into the trap of trying to be overly clever in their marketing. She emphasizes that while creativity is essential, it should not come at the cost of clarity. The duo stresses that the most effective marketing is straightforward and easy to understand. They argue that clarity is not just a nice-to-have; it is a fundamental requirement for successful marketing. The Power of Simplicity The conversation shifts to the power of simplicity in messaging. Christopher cites Walmart's tagline, "Save money. Live better," as an example of effective simplicity. This tagline is memorable and communicates the brand's value proposition clearly. He contrasts this with the overly complex messaging often found in the tech industry, where companies may describe their products in multiple ways, leading to confusion rather than clarity. Katrina shares a story about a photography club leader who was preparing to launch a virtual camp. The leader's email communications were filled with clever but confusing language, including hidden links and overly complex descriptions. After reviewing the emails together, Katrina advised him to prioritize clarity over cleverness. She emphasizes that when communicating with an audience, especially those unfamiliar with the subject matter, it is crucial to be as clear as possible. Katrina Kirsch on the Dangers of Overcomplication Christopher and Katrina discuss how the desire to sound smart can lead to overcomplicated messaging. They reference a smart startup CEO who, despite his intelligence, produced a press release that described the company's product in six different ways. This lack of consistency made it difficult for readers to understand what the company actually did. Christopher points out that this is a common mistake among intelligent individuals who may feel the need to showcase their knowledge through complex language. Katrina adds that in certain fields, such as academia or science, complexity can be valued. However, in marketing, especially for solopreneurs and small businesses, clarity should take precedence. The speakers agree that the goal should be to communicate the problem being solved and the solution offered in the simplest terms possible.
