Some days, he sits down with two new people. Some days he meets with four. The 33-year-old Lawless, a self-described extrovert, is on a mission to make friends — lots of them. In November 2015, Lawless launched Robs10kFriends, an initiative to meet 10,000 different people for an hour each. So far, he's connected with nearly 6446 strangers, which he tracks on his instagram. A Penn State grad, Lawless landed his first job at Deloitte Consulting, which he then left to take a sales position at a tech company. It was there, after countless cold calls and lots of rejections, that Lawless formed the idea for his project. He wanted to simply meet people and hang out one-on-one, disconnected from technology and with no set agenda in mind.⇒ The founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely, thinks she has the next essential accessory for the busy modern woman: High-heeled sneakers. Last week, she posted an Instagram message, teasing a “luxury hybrid stiletto” and “hy-heel sneaker.” She added that the launch is slated for tomorrow. But “Inc.” magazine found that the new website (Sneex.com) is already up. It offers high-heeled sneakers made of Napa leather, mesh and suede, and engineered to eliminate pain points that are common with high heel. The sneakers are listed for $395 to $595 per pair.FAIR FOOD FARE:Canada's largest annual fair, got underway on Friday. And while some people go there for the rides and entertainment, others are just there for the food. Here's a sampling of this year's menu:⇒ Deep Fried Pickle Oreos: Just what it sounds like: 3 Oreo cookies, each sandwiching 2 dill pickle slices, fried in a shaved pickle batter and topped with cinnamon sugar and icing.⇒ Deep Fried Cheese Curds: Deep fried cheese curds topped with icing, cotton candy, crunchy candy bits and edible glitter. Comes with a “Curd Lover” friendship bracelet. (We're sure they have copyright clearance on the ‘Taylor's Version' business…)⇒ Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab on a Stick: Chow down on the whole crab – doused in sriracha mayo.⇒ Deep Fried Butter Chicken Lasagna: A deep-fried slab of 8-layer lasagna with mozzarella, parmesan and ground butter chicken, in a slightly spicy butter chicken and tomato sauce. (That doesn't sound weird – it sounds delicious!)⇒ Mac & Cheetos Popsicle: Fried mac and cheese conveniently served on a stick, and livened up with a Cheetos coating.⇒ Kool-Aid Fried Chicken: Day-Glo red, deep-fried and generously topped, it boldly ventures into unfamiliar territory. (And we bet it's refreshing!)⇒ Cheeseburger Spring Rolls: More portable than your typical burger, this hand-rolled snack is stuffed with ground beef, cheese and dill pickles.⇒ Spammy Tots: Features crispy sushi rice tots splashed with Aloha Shoyu soy sauce and topped with Spam fries, nori flakes, furikake and spicy mayo. ⇒ Wasabi Ice Cream: Wasabi-flavored ice cream topped with crunchy orange sugar pearls and nori, served in a charcoal cone

What do you think you might learn about communication if you held thousands of conversations with strangers over the course of a decade? Well, you don't have to wonder. My guest in this episode can tell you. Back in 2015, while working as a sales rep tasked with cold-calling people who didn't want to talk to him, Rob Lawless started a side project to see if he could have conversations with complete strangers. Rob set a goal: to have an hour-long chat with 10,000 people about whatever topic was most important to them that day. This episode features Rob's 6,140th conversation on his way to 10,000, and it's with me. We discuss many things, but perhaps most importantly, we dive into the lessons Rob has learned about communication and nuance along the way. Check out Rob's work at https://www.robs10kfriends.com/ and at https://www.roblawless.com/, and follow Rob's journey on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/robs10kfriends/.

My guest today is Rob Lawless, who embarked on a remarkable mission back in 2015 to meet 10,000 people, spend an hour with each person and make a genuine connection with the people that he meets and learn from their stories out of genuine curiosity. He's been documenting this extraordinary project on his Instagram page, @robs10kfriends. He shares his encounters with these individuals with a photo on Instagram and a post about their hour together. There are no predetermined questions, recordings, or note-taking during their meetings; it's simply an hour-long, one-on-one connection. It's a captivating concept that left me in awe, so I had to have him on the podcast to find out his motivation. Rob takes us through his experiences of meeting people from diverse backgrounds, both locally and internationally, and the valuable insights he has gained about humanity. Rob has plans and future aspirations for the project and beyond, which seem destined to come to fruition given the profound impact of his current endeavor. Hey everybody, I'm Greg Sowell and this is Why Am I, a podcast where I talk to interesting people and try to trace a path to where they find themselves today. My guest this go around is Rob Lawless, or as I like to refer to him(a younger, better looking Greg). Rob is on an adventure to make 10K friends. This mission is so important that he quit the rat race to pursue it full time, and after seven years he's over halfway there. There are so many parallels between our missions(it's pretty crazy), that it seems we spend a good bit of the time just comparing notes which is actually pretty interesting for me…in fact I think it's inspired me to start some public speaking surrounding what I've learned…I suppose inspiration is all around us all the time. I hope you enjoy this chat with Rob. Help us grow by sharing with someone! Hanna first saw Rob Lawless on the Kelly Clarkson show and was instantly inspired by his story and project Rob's 10k Friends. This inspired Hanna to start her own project called Encounters with Hanna. Through her project, Hanna is on a mission to meet 100 strangers and spend an hour of sharing stories, learning about each other's lives, and connecting with each other. If you've been following the podcast for a while, you may recall that Rob is a friend of mine. Through Rob, Hanna and I were able to connect where I was her 34th encounter. It was a really cool experience to be a part of Hanna's project. Whether it was with our encounter, or any of her encounters, after the conversation Hanna writes about the experience. Hanna has even gotten some of her writing published by a local website in Ethiopia. While Hanna had her encounters with both Rob and me virtually, Hanna primarily has her encounters at local cafes or parks in her home country of Ethiopia. Through our conversations it was insightful and a pleasure to learn a bit about Ethiopian culture and Hanna's background. Ultimately, Hanna wants to continue to step out of her comfort zone and connect with strangers. After Hanna has her 100th encounter, she's unsure on whether she'll continue with the project or pivot to something new. Either way, Hanna plans on writing a book about her encounters and what she learned from her project. It's really exciting to see how far along Hanna's project has come and I cannot wait to see where it continues to take her. In modern-day warfare, data is considered a weapons system, and the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict gives us some perspective into what warfare looks like in a data-rich, hyperconnected world. To talk about the pervasiveness of data in contemporary and future warfare, Lawfare senior editor Stephanie Pell sat down with Brigadier General Shane Reeves, the dean of the Academic Board at West Point, and Robert Lawless, assistant professor in the Department of Law at West Point, to discuss their new piece, “Data-Rich Battlefields and the Future LOAC,” or law of armed conflict. They talked about the growing importance for militaries to be able to exploit data on the battlefield, the deception arms race that is emerging in the modern battlefield, and some key ways in which data-rich battlefields are putting pressure on the law of armed conflict.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Rob Lawless joins me for the first in a series we are doing on HR Wellbeing in partnership with SHRM. As a speaker at the SHRM22 Annual Conference, Rob will be bringing his perspective to the stage, which you can get a sense of from our discussion. In 2015, Rob set out to meet 10,000 people, and our episode catches him halfway through this journey. Rob shares tips on how and why people should make connections with others, and we discuss this within the context of the wellbeing of HR professionals. Given that human connection is part of self-compassion and how HR teams can help bolster their wellbeing, the topic was pretty timely. Stay tuned for additional episodes from other SHRM22 speakers! I love listening to stories that require someone to take a chance and today's episode is packed with those. You'll hear from my friend, Ahmad Jabbir. He exhibits and embodies the phrase “bet on yourself.” One of my favorite stories he tells is how he pitched the CEO of Seek Discomfort, the apparel brand of the wildly popular YouTube channel, Yes Theory, to hire him for a job that wasn't even created yet. His one-of-a-kind interview got him an instant yes. This bravado would be impressive with anyone but Ahmad wasn't always this bold. Up through college, he was shy, lacked confidence, and thought he was stupid. But a few personal development projects changed everything for him. In one of his most recent projects, Ahmad set out to meet 100 strangers. He was blown away by the people he met and the stories he heard. We'll get into all of that and more in this episode. Rob Lawless, or better known as Robs10kFriends on Instagram is on a mission to meet 10,000 strangers, one hour at a time and turn those strangers into friends. That sounds pretty crazy in its own right but you know what's even crazier? Meeting strangers is Rob's full time job! Some people say Rob quit 6 figure job to do this full time but it was actually after getting laid off when the startup he worked for got acquired, did he decide to go full time with his passion and start meeting people all day, everyday. Fast forward six years later and Rob hasn't looked back! He's gone from boring corporate job to doing his passion full time!WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT0:00 - Intro1:48 - How and why Rob started meeting 10,000 strangers12:51 - Taking the jump and meeting people full time22:46 - Overcoming doubt when on an untraditional path30:36 - How Rob has made it financially viable to do this full time58:11 - Lessons Learned Talking to almost 5,000 strangers so farFOLLOW ROBInstagram - @Robs10kFriends - https://www.instagram.com/robs10kfriends/TikTok - @Robs10kFriends - https://www.tiktok.com/@robs10kfriends?lang=enPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/robs10kfriendshttps://www.robs10kfriends.com/FOLLOW JACOBhttps://www.jacobkelly.ca/YouTube - Jacob KellyInstagram - @TheJacobKellyFOLLOW MY SOCIAL LIFEhttps://www.jacobkelly.ca/mysociallifeFOLLOW TRUFANhttps://www.trufan.ioInstagram - @Trufan.ioMUSICSong: Tough Love - Joakim Karudhttps://soundcloud.com/joakimkarudhttps://www.facebook.com/joakimkarudmusichttps://www.youtube.com/user/JoakimKarudMusic from SoundcloudMusic provided by RFM:https://youtu.be/jaoStyAQN4o
Welcome to week 29. Creators occupy all corners of the internet. Some will make you laugh, some will make you cry, and others will make you think. But, regardless of the output, each one has one thing in common. They are storytellers. So what does it looks like when the creator helps tell others stories. This week I'm chatting with Rob Lawless, aka Robs10kfriends. After leaving the corporate world in 2016, Rob set a goal of meeting 10,000 people. It's a journey to uncover the unknown and broaden his perspective. So far, he's met 4,674 people. Each conversation is an hour long. That means he has spent 280,440 hours learning about others and building genuine friendships. His mission is inspiring. There are countless stories of others embarking on a similar journey because of what he's doing. Imagine the impact he'll make by conversation 10,000. So, let's get to the good stuff. Here's my conversation with Rob Lawless
Episodes will include conversations with thought-leading entrepreneurs, emotionally intelligent business leaders and college and high school trailblazers who have accepted my challenge, discovered their ‘One Word' personal brand and are sharing it with the world in ways that are helping them Stand-out Conquer Obstacles and Reach Excellence, in other words, SCORE. Here are the 5 things you need to know about today's guest, Rob Lawless: Number 1: Rob is a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. Number 2: To encourage people to treat human connection as an experience, rather than a transaction, Rob is a man on a mission, with a “Crazy Idea” that I promise will leave you inspired to take action when this episode ends. Number 3: Rob's “Crazy Idea” has received some incredible press, including the Kelly Clarkson Show, the TODAY Show and On Air with Ryan Seacrest. He has also been invited to meet media personalities like Drew Scott and Zach King! Number 4: Rob delivered a TEDx Talk to Emory University on the untapped value of human connection, has spoken at the University of Washington and Amazon, and will be speaking at several universities and corporations this upcoming school year! AND Number 5: Rob's ‘One Word' Personal Brand…Take a listen to this episode to hear his answer. Let's meet Rob Lawless.
My name is Rob Lawless. I'm 29 years old, I'm originally from Norristown, PA and I enjoy meeting new people. Back in May of 2013, I graduated summa cum laude from Penn State University with a degree in Finance and minors in Accounting & Entrepreneurship. After graduation, I began my career with Deloitte Consulting as a Business Analyst in Strategy & Operations. It was my reach job at the time, but about 1.5 years into it, I pulled a Millennial move – I took a large pay cut and left the Powerpoint decks and spreadsheets for the laid back, $24 million venture-funded RJMetrics. While at RJ, I worked as a sales rep where I cold emailed people every day asking them to hop on the phone for 30 mins to chat about our product. And my job being sales, I often received responses like these actual replies (s/o to all my reps still in the game): “Take me off your mailing list, cockroach” “I understand that this is your job. This being said. If asking a girl out for coffee and she ignores you twice and finally says no, you do NOT ask whether this is a no just now or a now forever – and you certainly do not ask her why you are not her type” (Disclaimer: I have never used this strategy on girls) “Not interested (and you're really starting to annoy me)” So along with a bunch of factors that I mention in my first blog post, I started this project to see if I could meet with people to chat for an hour for absolutely no reason and held my first meeting on November 11, 2015. I was rejected way less, the responses were all positive and encouraging, and I've met amazing people with incredible backgrounds who would all consider themselves normal. On Monday, June 20, 2016, RJMetrics was acquired by a larger company, which didn't require my position, so I dove in full-time on my endeavor to meet 10,000 different people for an hour each. Since then, I've met over 3,500 people from over 60 countries and 35 US States. I've driven across the country six times and also been featured by some awesome press sources, including Ryan Seacrest on his nationally syndicated radio show, “On Air with Ryan Seacrest,” as well as “Your Morning,” a national Canadian morning show and the TODAY Show with Hoda and Jenna! I also got the chance to appear as a guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show alongside Jane Lynch and Jo Koy where the audience was made up of ~100 friends from the project – an awesome experience! I love adventure and I love potential – over the last 4.5 years, I've found this project to have both so I've been greatly satisfied with how it's gone so far and can't wait to continue giving it 110% to see where it takes me in the future! Last thought, I've had a great experience meeting new people – if you feel so inclined, give it a try and let me know how it goes for you :) Rob's 10k Friends Website IG - @robs10kfriends (I'm friend #4426)
Meet Rob, I got the chance to be part of Rob's project called 10k Friends where he meets individuals from all over the world and spends an hour with each one of them till he reaches his goal of 10k people. I was the 4393 individual Rob meets. I loved the idea and asked him to join me on a podcast episode. His goal is to build communities, to learn about other people's stories, create a space for others to be who they are and not judge them.He started his journey in the corporate world, he did not really enjoy his time there, after that he joined a startup, it eventually got bought out and that is when he decided to go full time on 10k Friends. His goal is to speak in universities/ schools and to educate students on how to communicate effectively with each other and share with them the tools he has learnt to build up his confidence, by asking the right questions. He meets 3-4 people/ day and he manages to remember the details of their stories, but how does he do that? In this episode he shares more about it. robs10kfriends
In this episode, I got the chance to chat with Rob Lawless, someone who has connected with humans of all backgrounds from all over the world. Rob's goal and full-time job are to meet 10,000 people, and I happened to be #4200 of the people that he has met. Throughout the episode, Rob and I talk about the beginnings of the project, transitioning from a full-time career in finance and tech sales to this creative path, and some of the sacrifices that he has made along the way. Rob is a graduate from Penn State, and has spent the last five years working on his project called Robs10kFriends. The goal of his project is to meet 10,000 people one on one for one hour each. Initially, Rob was meeting with people around the Philadelphia area in person. However, once the pandemic set in, Rob turned to virtual hangouts which led to him being able to meet people from all over the world. Whenever Rob meets someone, he's never interviewing them, rather, he's just getting to know them on a personal level. Very similarly to this podcast, Rob goes into each meeting without anything scripted and the conversation is completely organic. Honestly, during about half of the conversation, I felt like I was in the other seat for my own podcast. In order to keep things aligned with both of our missions, we just had a organic, unscripted, and unedited conversation where we got to know each other. So with this episode, you'll most likely be learning quite a bit more about me. You'll also learn a bit about Rob. And through the whole conversation, you'll learn about how we're pretty similar people, with very similar goals and missions. Also, if you have ever been curious about how a one on one meeting for Robs10kFriends go, this is a great "behind the scenes" look at what actually happens during the meeting! In this episode you get to hear two strangers from a connection right in the moment, while talking about sports, music, our background, and much more! Go give Rob some love! A mission to spend 1 hour 1 on 1 with 10,000 different people to learn about their lives and to see what comes from opening doors for no specific reason. It's not easy to make new friends. But Rob Lawless is somewhat of an expert at it. He's on a mission to make 10000 friends. It'll take him over 10 years, but he's already made over 2500. Find out why he's so curious about human connections and what inspired him to make this his full time pursuit.Rob Lawless is originally from Norristown, PA and graduated Penn State University with 2013. After graduation, he began a career with Deloitte Consulting as a Business Analyst in Strategy & Operations. In November 11, 2015 Rob started this project to see if I could meet with people to chat for an hour for absolutely no reason. He immediately saw he was rejected way less, the responses were all positive and encouraging, and he was able to meet amazing people with incredible backgrounds who would all consider themselves normal. When Rob was laid off on June 20, 2016, he started his journey, and since then, he has met over 3200 people (Meir was friend 3200) across 20+ cities in the U.S. & Canada, have driven across the United States 6 separate times and have been featured by some awesome press sources, including Ryan Seacrest, as well as “Your Morning,” a national Canadian morning show.Of course before the show Rob and I took part in his 1 hour meeting. I am honored to say I am friend 3200 and very honored to bring you this show where we learn way more about Rob's background and his mission to learn about the lives of 10,000 people.Connect with RobInstagramWebsiteClick here to become one of Rob's 10,000 friendsDon't forget to subscribe to The Great Day PodcastYou can watch the full episode on YouTubeAnd be sure to follow my Instagram page and Facebook page to stay up to date on everything I'm working on.I'm Meir Kay and Have A Great Day! My guest today is Rob Lawless (@robs10kfriends). Rob is a Penn State graduate and founder of Rob's 10k Friends, a project where he's seeking to spend one hour with 10,000 different people. He's more than four years in and nearly 1/3 of the way to his goal. Rob and I talked about stereotypes, fulfillment vs. financial maximization, how conversations highlight our similarities, how it's hard to hate up close, and much more. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.
In this episode, we speak to Rob Lawless, the creator behind the Rob's 10K Friends project on Instagram. We dive deep into how it started, what inspired the project, and why happiness doesn't always correlate to a high paying job. This week Matt & Meredith share a customer review, come down a bit from the emotionally draining midterm elections, and speak with Rob Lawless about his project to meet 10,000 people and document it on Instagram! Don't forget to subscribe!
Rob Lawless is on a mission to spend 1 hour with 10,000 people - here's our hour! I ask him what to do when you've lost all your hopes and dreams. The show's first guest!
Some of you might consider our guest today unconventional. You might listen to his story and back ground and think, how in the world can I relate to this guy? Well, Eryn and I have always felt like we're a bridge between the "traditional" community and those that are interested in minimalism and intentional living but feel intimidated by living out of a backpack while traveling the world. If you've listed to us long enough, you know that we don't think there's one perfect recipe for minimalism or intentional living….it's going to look different for everyone. However, just because someone IS living out of their backpack and traveling the world doesn't mean they don't have something special to offer the world even if that's not your jam. So that's why we've brought Rob on the show today. What he is doing is VERY unconventional, but we think you will find it interesting, inspiring and hopeful you'll learn something from his story.
