Dr. Brian Klausner says the time has come to address the problem of homelessness, but it will require solutions grounded in our shared ideals and values. His book, "In the Gaps: Better Understanding the Expensive Human Suffering of Chronic Homelessness," addresses how we can come together to help this population and society as a whole.
Amin. (Dod)
The primary focus of today's discourse centers on the intricate dynamics of the housing market and its consequential impact on the furniture industry. A notable decline of 2.9% in home construction activity for February, coupled with a staggering 6.8% drop in building permits, signifies a troubling trend for sectors reliant on housing growth, particularly furniture sales. Nevertheless, an encouraging uptick in housing starts by 11.2% from January to February suggests a potential resurgence in construction activities, which may subsequently bolster demand for home furnishings. Furthermore, the imposition of increased tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber, nearing a cumulative rate of 40%, presents both challenges and opportunities; while elevated material costs could hinder construction and, by extension, furniture sales, they may also incentivize a shift toward more budget-friendly options as consumers adapt to rising home prices. As we delve deeper into these developments, we shall explore the broader implications of these trends on domestic manufacturing and consumer behavior within the furniture sector.Takeaways: The recent decline in home construction activity underscores the precarious relationship between housing trends and furniture sales. Despite challenges, an 11.2% increase in housing starts from January to February suggests potential recovery in construction activity. Rising tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber may significantly influence home building costs and consequently affect furniture demand. As companies reconsider manufacturing locations due to tariffs, a shift towards increased domestic production in the furniture industry appears plausible. Klausner's investment in a new factory in North Carolina signifies a potential trend towards reshoring production in the furniture sector. Consumer preferences are evolving rapidly, compelling businesses to innovate continually in order to remain competitive within the market.

On the next Charlotte Talks, the U.S. has an increasing number of homeless people many of whom are chronically homeless. Dr. Brian Klausner has spent his career taking care of these people as patients and says the time has come to address the problem but that it will require solutions grounded in our shared ideals and values. His book "In the Gaps: Better Understanding the Expensive Human Suffering of Chronic Homelessness," addresses how we can come together to help this population and society as a whole.
Laurie Hackett welcomes Jared Mast of the Greater Easton Development Partnership and Mel Klausner, a local theatre volunteer, to talk about the joys of their roles and their motivations.
“As a kid, I had the Super 8, we were making backyard epics, and somebody had to write the scripts,” jokes Howard Klausner about his screenwriting career. “I struck out as a guitar player and actor, but I knew how to write.” Klausner is best known for SPACE COWBOYS, DIRTY HARRY: THE ORIGINAL, THE LAST RIDE, GOD'S NOT DEAD: A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS and most recently, REAGAN. The latest film stars Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller, and Jon Voight. The story is “a drama based on the life of Ronald Reagan, from his childhood to his time in the oval office” that took 14 years to get made. In this interview, Howard talks about advice from Clint Eastwood, “what do I care about versus what am I trying to sell?,” his love for the Hero's Journey, shifting from being hired help to being the Band of Brothers, advice for indie filmmakers, and the intangibles that drive writers to craft specs. Howard Klausner, screenwriter for the new "Reagan" movie (starring Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller and Jon Voight), joins the show today. Klausner describes the origins of the creation of the film, its long and winding path (10+ years) to creating it, and his hopes for the film (in theatres today). Klausner, who worked on two campaigns for former president Jimmy Carter, shares "This is not a Republican movie. This is an American movie. It's an American story," adding, "I think the real secret to Reagan is he was a Democrat for 40 years of his life, and then he became a Republican...we're living in such a vitriolic time right now--you're either on this team or you're the enemy. He never looked at it like that." (WFIL is giving away tickets to the film through Thursday September 5 at 1159pm; enter on the CONTESTS page at wfil.com). Ian O'Connor, award-winning author, kicks off today's show to discuss his new book Out Of The Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers. O'Connor covers much ground--both on and off the field--ranging from Rodgers' grandfather (a seasoned combat pilot in WWII) through Rodgers' growing up, path to and accomplishments in football, as well as a number of other facets of Rodgers' life. O'Connor has also written four NY Times bestsellers: Coach K, Belichick, The Captain and Arnie & Jack (on legends Mike Krzyzewski (Duke basketball head coach), Bill Belichick (New England Patriots head coach) and Derek Jeter (NY Yankees shortstop), plus golf greats Arnold Palmer & Jack Nicklaus). In this edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts Josh Klausner, who, in addition to being Rabbi Yoshi's college roommate, is a screenwriter, playwright, and director.Klausner's writing credits include Wanderland (2018), Date Night (2010), and Shrek Forever After (2010). He's also worked as a second unit director on Dumb and Dumber (1994), Kingpin (1996), There's Something About Mary (1998), Me, Myself, and Irene (2000), Shallow Hall (2001), and Green Book (2018).While Klausner aspired to be an actor, his early interest in poetry and his dissatisfaction with the plays he read during his college years led him down the path to becoming a writer. His thesis advisor at Princeton wound up being none other than Tony Kushner, a four-time Oscar nominee who's won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a Tony Award for Best Play, and has collaborated with Steven Spielberg on Munich (2005), Lincoln (2012), West Side Story (2021), and The Fabelmans (2022).Fascinated by the immediacy and intimacy of theater and the moments just before sleep, and trying to process his own parents' divorce, one of his first works was a two-act play about divorce from the point of view of two brothers. A pre-ordination Rabbi Yoshi had a part in that play, Brothers of the Bearded Lady. Using one's own written work to process is far from an alien concept for Rabbi Yoshi, who does so with many of his sermons. The two discuss how writing can be a powerful way to work through ideas, concepts, and emotions, and a way to see older ideas in a new light as they are revisited years later in a different context. Through this lens, they discuss regret, life choices, personal discovery, and more in a deeply personal and philosophical conversation.
