One of the many reasons we started this podcast was to talk about great movies with our best friends and in this weeks episode, we get to do just that. The Social Network is everyone at the top of their game. Fincher's directing, Sorkin and his melodic script, and even Justin Timberlake pulls out a good performance. Each puzzle piece fit so well it created a modern classic. The Social Network will be talked about for generations to come. We're glad to be a tiny piece in the conversation. The spectacular rise and incredible fall of a crypto empire and its unconventional founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, the billionaire wannabe philanthropist now facing decades behind bars. Journalist Zing Tsjeng and BBC business editor Simon Jack could not resist inviting special guest Michael Lewis (author of Liar's Poker, Moneyball and The Big Short) to tell this story. Michael was at the scene with SBF as his FTX crypto trading business crumbled and the law closed in. They trace SBF's life from childhood in Californian academia through his rapid accumulation of wealth – surpassed only by the speed at which it was lost – and on into his prison cell. Then they decide if he is good, bad, or just another billionaire.

“Stay in Oakland!” was the plea from many a diehard Athletics fan in the stands of the Oakland Coliseum this past baseball season as the team planned its move to Las Vegas. Some potential hurdles to a move remain unresolved, including a vote by Major League Baseball team owners next week on whether to allow it. Here's a short teaser of our Patreon-exclusive podcast series where we will be examining the cinema of Steven Soderbergh. Happy 11.7 Day (November 7th). We have waited a few weeks to make this announcement but we could not be happier to finally share that we have hired on Mason McRae and Jack Delongchamps. Mason is basically Peter Brand Jr. (Jonah Hill in Moneyball). Just an absolute wizard with analyzing prospects. He will be in charge of our MLB Draft and College Prospect content. Jack is one of a kind content creator who specializes in connecting with the biggest names in college baseball and.... interviews them with a pencil? Yes, you read this right. He is the future of college baseball broadcasting and will be the lead play by play guy in Omaha one day. I'm not joking. He is a special breed.

This week on the Value Perspective, we're delighted to be joined by Joe Peta. Joe is the author of Moneyball for the Money Set, which explains how techniques gleaned from sport analytics can help to predict the returns of portfolio managers with startling accuracy. Before putting pen to paper, Joe started his career at Lehman Brothers before moving to Nomura. He then moved over to the buy side, working for Novus Partners, Kingsford Capital Management and Point72. To chat with Joe, Andy Evans from the Value Team is joined by Robert Donald, Chief Investment Officer of Schroder GAIA Helix. Robert's quant skills make him an ideal co-presenter for this episode. Robert, like Joe started on the sell side as an equity analyst before moving to GLG Partners where he ran a long-short strategy. He also worked for Soros Fund Management and Brummer and Partners before joining us as Schroders in 2017. In this episode we discuss: Joe's method for breaking down performance in a way that assesses skill, including hit rates, explosiveness, magnitude, scaling, and sizing; parallels with sports analytics and applicability for assessing skills for different types of investors; Goddard's Law; Managers' deficiency at sizing decisions; and finally, prediction tools and predicting power. We explore what lessons the payments industry can learn from the new approach the team took, and what it takes to challenge conventional wisdom successfully. This podcast was recorded on October 5, 2023. Things may have changed by the time you hear it.

This is the second instalment of a three-part discussion. Michael Lewis is the renowned author of bestselling nonfiction hits including Moneyball, The Big Short, Flash Boys and Liar's Poker. His latest is his most anticipated book to date: Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon, a gripping, real-time narrative chronicling the enigmatic protagonist behind one of the most catastrophic financial meltdowns of the 21st century. This character is Sam Bankman-Fried, who became the world's youngest billionaire before his thirtieth birthday. And Lewis is uniquely positioned to tell his story, having been granted unprecedented access by Bankman-Fried, allowing him to witness his entire tumultuous journey. Joining Lewis in conversation is our host the journalist and presenter Ritula Shah. We'd love to hear your feedback and what you think we should talk about next. Having already amassed a $26 billion fortune at 28, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried was the world's richest person under 30. He was also the most prominent advocate of the 'effective altruism' movement, pledging to donate millions of dollars to charities he judged would make the greatest positive difference. Then, it all came crashing down. Bankman-Fried is currently on trial in New York for fraud, after the collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange exposed the misuse of customer funds. But he is no ordinary greedy billionaire, says best-selling author Michael Lewis, who had already chosen Bankman-Fried as the subject of his next book before his fortunes changed. Lewis, whose previous books include Moneyball, The Big Short and Flash Boys, returns to the Inside Politics podcast to talk to Hugh Linehan about the highly unusual personality, methods and motivations of Sam Bankman-Fried. He also addresses the criticisms he himself has faced for his relatively favourable depiction of a man charged with conspiracy, money laundering and fraud. Hosted on Acast. Author Michael Lewis joins Jen Taub today to talk about Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon, his new book that focuses on Sam Bankman-Fried, the crypto-wunderkind who is now on trial on federal criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud, commodities fraud, and money laundering. Though Michael needs no introduction, here's one anyway. You know Michael from his numerous bestselling works of narrative nonfiction. You may in fact be someone like John Williams of the New York Times book review who wrote: “I would read an 800-page history of the stapler if he wrote it.” I'm certain that I would as well, and not just because my preliminary research of the stapler shows that there is some controversy as to its origins. But, I digress. Michael Lewis may be best known for his follow-the-money books. These include his debut work Liar's Poker about binge-eating bond traders on Wall Street in the 1980s, as well as The Big Short published in 2010, about a scrappy selection of investors who saw that the toxic-mortgage-linked securities bubble was about to burst and made billions on their related trades. Several of Michael's books have been made into feature films including the Big Short, directed by Adam McKay; Moneyball, and The Blind Side. Beyond his story-telling excellence, what makes Michael's work so compellihg are the unexpected discoveries about the fragility of our government infrastructure such as with the Fifth Risk and his ability to make us think in a more nuanced way about high-profile topics, including his already controversial take on SBF. Jen and Michael Lewis talk about indicted crypto-wunderkind Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF). In their discussion they contemplated whether SBF ran his businesses like an absent-minded parent setting up an Easter Egg hunt without making note of how many and where the eggs were. As an alternative, he might have deliberately siphoned off customer and investor assets and hide them in accounts to use later for himself or his charitable causes.
