Werner Reich was sixteen years old when his life was turned upside down. His father passed, his mother perished in a concentration camp, and he found himself in Auschwitz. His peculiar bunkmate there turned out to be... a magician. That man--The Great Nivelli--taught Werner a card trick. And in doing so, he saved his life. Werner Reich has been a magician ever since. Joshua Jay delves into the fascinating life of ninety-four-year-old Reich in this riveting conversation.

In the era of big tech, groundbreaking technological innovation has given rise to an increasingly efficient and methodical society. But these advances are not without consequence, as unbounded technological growth demands control over how we work, think, consume and communicate. Our panelists say too many have accepted biased algorithms, job-displacing robots, and surveillance-based capitalism as an inexorable cost of innovation, giving a powerful few the reins over our evolving society. Technologists, the venture capitalists who fund them, and the politicians who allow for this unregulated growth have stepped into the seat of power, often prioritizing technological optimization and efficiency over fundamental human values. System Error, authored by three Stanford professors, offers an alternative to this dystopian vision of a world controlled by big tech. Armed with the combined knowledge of philosopher Rob Reich, a leading thinker at the intersection of technology and ethics, political scientist and former Obama staffer Jeremy Weinstein, as well as the director of Stanford's undergraduate computer science program Mehran Sahami, System Error reveals how big tech can be held to account for the power it wields over our society. Join us as professors Reich, Weinstein and Sahami uncover the gripping reality of big tech and explain how we can chart a new path forward to control technology before it controls us. About the Speakers Rob Reich is the director of Stanford University's Center for Ethics in Society; co-director of the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, and associate director of its new Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence; and co-author of System Error:Where Big Tech Went Wrong and How We Can Reboot. Mehran Sahami is a professor of computer science at Stanford University; former senior research scientist at Google; and co-author of System Error:Where Big Tech Went Wrong and How We Can Reboot.

Michele K. Troy is professor of English at Hillyer College at the University of Hartford. She studies Anglo-American literary modernism in continental Europe and is the author of Strange Bird: The Albatross Press and the Third Reich, the first book to be written about the Albatross Press, a Penguin precursor, that entered into an uneasy relationship with the Nazi regime to keep Anglo-American literature alive under fascism. The press was, from its beginnings in 1932, a “strange bird”: a cultural outsider to the Third Reich but an economic insider. It was funded by British-Jewish interests. Its director was rumored to work for British intelligence. It distributed fiction in English by both mainstream and edgier modernist authors such as D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway to eager continental readers. Yet Albatross printed and sold its paperbacks from the heart of Hitler's Reich. Michele and I talk about how weird this is, among other things.

DD and Sean ponder on what happened to the Colts defensively and how it can be cleaned up for Matthew Stafford coming in next week. 3. 1:45:06 – 1:54:16 – Before we hit Race of the Day, Dan brings on Brendan King, who is in the producer chair today for Jimmy Cook to talk about the weekend featuring Colts, Butler Homecoming, Notre Dame and more. The bodies of the pair were then taken outside to the Reich Chancellery garden, doused in petrol and burnt. This official account of how Hitler died. However, privately the Allies doubted the story. Several senior figures in Allied intelligence believed Hitler may have escaped. Russian leader Joseph Stalin was certain Hitler had actually fled, and told this to the Americans.thefacthunter.com

Carl Stone has been a huge influence on me – his work transported me from “Interested in that music tech stuff for making pop tunes” to “Let's get serious!” His exploration into the nature of sampled sounds – and sampled/mashed/twisted tracks – took some of the ideas explored by Schaeffer, Cage, Reich and others, and gave them a whole new context. His recordings blew my head open, and continues to do so today. Some time ago I connected with Carl via Facebook, and finally screwed up the courage to ask for an interview. He was into it, and we had a great talk, covering everything from his various touring systems, to his love of Japan, to his seeming obsession with food and restaurants. Throughout all of it, you get a glimpse of the man – and the artist – that continues to push the envelope of sonic exploration. Much of Carl's older work has been reissued, and is available both in physical form as well as streaming. If you haven't yet dug into Carl Stone's work – get on it! There is a widely shared photo from the era of the Nazi 3rd Reich. In it you see everyone ‘heiling' and saluting to the Führer except for one lone figure. Often there is a red circle drawn around this person. Pointing out the only person standing against the tide of genocide and authoritarianism. In Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, Isabel Wilkerson opens her book by asking: “We might feel certain that, were we Aryan citizens under the Third Reich, we surely would have seen through it, would have risen above it like him, been that person resisting authoritarianism and brutality in the face of mass hysteria...But unless people are willing to transcend their fears, endure discomfort and derision, suffer the scorn of loved ones and neighbors and co-workers and friends, fall into disfavor of perhaps everyone they know, face exclusion and even banishment, it would be numerically impossible, humanly impossible, for everyone to be that man. What would it take to be him in any era? What would it take to be him now?” As Isabel Wilkerson points out, while we all may assert we would be that person, the reality is that “it would be numerically impossible, humanly impossible, for everyone to be that man.” Isabel Wilkerson's Book ‘Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents' provides an opportunity to strive to “be that man.” If there is one book you plan to read this year, it is my wish that this be amongst your top considerations. On this week's episode, I am joined by past guest's Stacey Cosden and Lloyd Wilkey to discuss and reflect upon Isabel Wilkerson's Caste. Together we share with you some of the passages, insights, ahas, and emotions that deeply impacted us. There is no way we can do the book justice in just 1 hour.
