He competed in debate for all four years of high school. He qualified to the NSDA National Debate Tournament as well as won the novice district tournament. His greatest accomplishment in debate has been starting his nonprofit Debating for America's Youth.Debating for America's Youth is a nonprofit focused on providing free educational content to the Speech and Debate community. The most successful projects on the account have been interviews with Speech and Debate National Champions. In this episode Cale interviews Gordon Peer, debate coach and member of the NSDA China academic team. Gordon Peer has most recently been the Director of Forensics at Green Canyon High School, leading them to be the top program in the Intermountain West and in the top 75 of the NSDA. As a Diamond Coach and Utah 4A Coach of the Year, he has mentored multiple NDCA and NSDA Congress National Finalists, including 3 rd in the Country at NDCA 2014. Since 2015, he has coached multiple National Octofinalists in Policy Debate & World Schools Debate. He has been a Congressional Debate Director for several years at programs such as WSDI and BFI. As a Ten-Time State Champion Coach, he has coached Region and State Champions in Congressional Debate, Public Forum, Policy, Oratory, and Extemporaneous Speaking. In addition to competing in High School at such schools as Princeton and St. John’s, Gordon earned a degree in Law & Constitutional Studies from Utah State University, received another in Political Science Teaching from Weber State University, and attended graduate studies at Gonzaga University School of Law.Cale & Gordon talk about the differences between China and US PF debate, how debate has shifted over the years and the values of speech and debate that transcend culture and country.

Cale Halley chats with speech and debate coach Kurt Shelton to discuss how speech and debate in China has grown since NSDA China's inception and where it could be headed.Kurt Shelton is currently teaching at RDFZ Kings College in Hangzhou after teaching for three years at Hangzhou Foreign Language School. Prior to working for Dipont Education, Kurt Shelton was Youth Activities Supervisor for the Newark Public Schools and coached the Rutgers Newark Debate Team. He has over 20 year’s experience of coaching successful debate and public speaking programs. His students have won the NDT and CEDA National Debate Championships four times including two collegiate Top Speaker Awards. He has been awarded with the 1997 Lexington Coaches Award of Excellence in Public Speaking, the 2005 Sandra Deleon Award of Service and the 2010 Jersey Urban Debate League “Coach of the Year”. His students were the 2011 National Association of Urban Debate League High School National Champions. His students have earned national recognition and been invited to meet with President Obama in the Oval office. They have also been awarded the 2010 Jackie Robinson Scholarship, the 2011 Bank of America Student Leadership Summit Award, and the 2010 NAACP student of the year by the Newark chapter.
