The suspect’s goal? Kill endangered gray wolves. What followed was an extraordinary, boots-in-the-snow investigation involving forensics, environmental science, and sheer tenacity. In this episode of Zone 7, Crime Scene Investigator, Sheryl McCollum, and Ed Newcomer, a retired special agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, walk us through the forensic lab breakthroughs that tied the poison, the elk meat, and even a suspect’s boots directly to the scene. Along the way, you'll hear how a rookie game warden’s decision to bag “yellow snow” ended up sealing the case. If you’re heading to CrimeCon, don't miss Sheryl and Ed on the main stage for Creator’s Row. They’ll be covering another unbelievable wildlife crime case live and in person. Alex Murdaugh Appeal EXPOSED: Jury Tampering, Flawed Forensics, & Missing Evidence The Alex Murdaugh case is back in the spotlight — not because of new charges, but because of an explosive appeal that could rewrite the ending of one of the most notorious murder trials in South Carolina history. In December 2024, Murdaugh's defense team filed a 132-page appeal with the South Carolina Supreme Court, claiming his double murder trial was “infected with unfairness” from start to finish. The allegations are staggering: jury tampering by former court clerk Becky Hill, the use of questionable forensic evidence, the admission of six days of testimony about unrelated financial crimes, and the discovery of previously unseen text messages between Murdaugh and longtime associate Curtis “Eddie” Smith. At the heart of the appeal is Hill's alleged interference with jurors — comments she's accused of making during the trial, urging them not to believe Murdaugh's testimony. Hill has since been arrested on perjury, obstruction, and misconduct charges, but not for jury tampering itself. The defense says this is enough to demand a new trial. The State says it's inappropriate but not enough to overturn the verdict. The forensic fights are just as intense, with the defense attacking shell casing toolmark analysis and an unscientific “iPhone toss” demonstration used to rebut their theory of a third-party culprit. And now, the Eddie Smith texts have thrown fuel on the fire, with the defense claiming they were never disclosed. The State's response is due any day now. Oral arguments could happen this fall, but a ruling may not come until 2026. If the convictions fall, it won't mean Murdaugh is declared innocent — it will mean the court decided the trial itself wasn't fair. #AlexMurdaugh #MurdaughAppeal #TrueCrime #BeckyHill #EddieSmith #SouthCarolina #CourtroomDrama #LegalUpdate #MurdaughMurders #Justice Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Did Investigators MISS Key Kohberger Evidence at Crime Scene? FBI Vet Gives Insight In a crime scene this gruesome, can anything really go unnoticed? According to retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, the answer might be yes. In this episode of Hidden Killers with Tony Brueski, we dig into the newly unsealed documents in the Bryan Kohberger case and ask the uncomfortable question—what did investigators miss? Coffindaffer lays out where the forensic trail may have gone cold. From a three-person DNA mixture found under a victim's nails that didn't match Kohberger, to inconsistencies in the documentation of certain injuries, the case may not be as airtight as many believe. Is there a blind spot in the evidence? Did the intense public pressure push authorities to stop looking once they had their suspect? We also examine the possibility that touch DNA contamination or overlooked physical evidence could muddy the waters in a high-stakes trial that never happened due to Kohberger's plea. Jennifer offers firsthand insight into how crime scenes are prioritized and how crucial physical detail—like shoe prints, blood spatter angles, and fiber transfer—can be easily missed if the focus becomes too narrow too fast. This episode doesn't cast doubt on the verdict—but it does raise vital questions about the investigative process and whether justice is ever truly immune to human error. Forensics isn't foolproof. And in a case this massive, every missed clue matters. #BryanKohberger #IdahoStudentMurders #CrimeSceneAnalysis #JenniferCoffindaffer #TrueCrimeToday #KohbergerInvestigation #HiddenKillers #KohbergerEvidence #ForensicFailure #KohbergerCrimeScene Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In this episode, FNO: InsureTech hosts a conversation with Spencer McInvaille, Director of Digital Forensics at Envista Forensics, to examine the expanding role of digital evidence in insurance investigations. The discussion explores practical methods for extracting and interpreting data from everyday devices—such as cell phones and vehicles—to assist with claims validation. Listeners gain a measured perspective on how location information, privacy considerations, rapid advancements in technology, and evolving threats like AI-manipulated imagery intersect in contemporary claims handling. Key Highlights Comprehensive overview of digital forensics as applied in the insurance space, with emphasis on how cell phones, computers, and vehicle data are leveraged to answer critical questions in claims and litigation. Practical applications of digital location data: Spencer explains how investigators may use cell phone and carrier records to determine an individual's whereabouts during an alleged loss and support or refute policyholder narratives. Data privacy, security, and generational perspectives are addressed together—touching on device security practices, informed consent, differences in comfort levels across age groups, and the realities of data retention and access. Discussion of connected vehicle data and the volume of information modern vehicles and rentals may store; Spencer references an “Inside Edition” segment that illustrated data retrieval capabilities, noting this as a demonstration of industry techniques rather than proprietary information. Examination of artificial intelligence in the investigative process—Spencer discusses both the use of AI to manage large digital datasets and the growing need to detect manipulated images or synthetic media; only general capabilities are described, with no specific product endorsements or recommendations. Guidance for insurance practitioners and the public on applying basic device security measures, understanding personal data tradeoffs, and responding swiftly to preserve evidence following an incident.

A new court order issued on August 1 marks a major development in the infamous West Memphis Three case. Over 30 years after the tragic 1993 murders of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, the Crittenden County court has approved cutting-edge DNA testing using the M-Vac system — a forensic breakthrough that could finally reveal new answers. The M-Vac, a wet-vacuum DNA collection system, will be used on key pieces of evidence, including the shoelaces that were used to hogtie the victims, as well as possibly their clothing and other crime scene items. The order directs that this evidence be sent to Bode Technology, one of the newest labs equipped with the M-Vac system. This case, which resulted in the conviction and eventual release of Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr., and Jason Baldwin, has long been fraught with controversy, questions of police coercion, and juror misconduct. Damien Echols, originally sentenced to death, has been leading efforts to test remaining evidence using today's most advanced DNA tools. Will this be the turning point that uncovers the truth once and for all?

Welcome back to the conclusion of my interview with Author and retired FBI Forensic Artist Lisa Bailey.Just a heads up, today's interview consists of two separate interviews. The first part is more about her exciting career as an FBI forensic Artist. The second half of our interview will expose the dark side of the FBI and how Lisa, a woman who devoted her life to service to this great country, was harassed, bullied, and discriminated against. The FBI failed to take proper action against Lisa's bosses, who were responsible, or simply turned a blind eye. Their conduct and the cover-up were inexcusable and were done to make sure not to ‘embarrass the bureau.'I want to make it very clear I'm not an FBI smear campaign. Every day, the men and women of the FBI go out and do the right thing, whether they are arresting criminals or helping other agencies put criminals behind bars. But, upper management has to change the culture of don't embarrass the bureau, even if that means admitting you or one of your subordinates did the wrong thing and fixing it. It's very simple, do the right thing, even if it's painful or embarrasses you, because it is the right thing to do.In today's episode, we discuss:· Would Lisa donate her body to the Body Farm?· Lisa walks us through the Lester Eubanks age progression case she spearheaded.· What she says to those who see her work as not an exact science.· How A.I. will change her previous job as a forensic artist.· How she dealt with being surrounded by death.· Her advice for someone who wants to be a forensic artist?· FBI culture. Agents, and ‘everyone else.'· Her being the victim of a hostile work environment, bullying, and discrimination while working at the FBI. “Don't embarrass the bureau,” even when they are clearly in the wrong.· My interview with former FBI Special Agent Zach Schoffstall.· Lisa's book, Clay and Bones: My Life as an FBI Forensic ArtistAll of this and more on today's episode of the Cops and Writers podcast.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Optography is the process of viewing or retrieving an optogram, an image on the retina of the eye. A belief that the eye "recorded" the last image seen before death was widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was a frequent plot device in fiction of the time, to the extent that police photographed the victims' eyes in several real-life murder investigations, in case the theory was true. The concept has been repeatedly debunked as a forensic method.

As Christmas of 1995 drew near, many families in rural Ohio drew closer and felt themselves caught up in the joy and pagentry of the holiday season.  Unfortunately, for one family, the holiday would forever be associated with pain and grief, loss and doubt, a disappearance and the unknown.John and Shelly Markley were devoted and loving parents to their five children.  During a week already marked by a family tragedy, John and Shelly mysteriously vanished on the morning of Friday, December 15th.  The last sighting of the couple was made by a bank teller who waited on them at the drive up window.  In addition to John and Shelly, the woman saw a third individual, a man who has never been identified.Investigators found themselves caught up in a case with just one witness, almost no physical evidence and few in any clues.  As the case unfolded, detectives would learn a lot about John and Shelly and everyone else in their lives.  Within weeks an unknown caller began ringing the family home, demanding cash in exchange for the return of the missing couple and that would take the investigation in a completely different direction.Nearly thirty years later, what became of John and Shelly remains a mystery and while law enforcement is certain there are people locally who know much more than they have shared, the case continues growing cold.Use promo code "Trace" to save 10% on your ticket for CrimeCon DenverFollow Trace Evidence on Social MediaTwitter --- Instagram --- TikTok --- YouTube --- Like Facebook Page --- Join Facebook Group --- Threads --- Like MeWe Page --- Join MeWe Group --- BlueskySuppport Trace EvidencePatreon --- Paypal --- Cash App --- Buy Me A CoffeeTrace Evidence Merch ShopsTeePublic --- ShopTEPod --- SpreadshopAll Other LinksOfficial Trace Evidence Website --- LinkTreeMusic Courtesy of:"Lost Time"  Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/"Echoes of Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/"Galactic Rap" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/"Ghost in the Algorithm" Music from Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio#truecrimepodcast #unsolvedmysteries #coldcase #coldcaseinvestigation #murder #murdermystery #missingperson #missingpersons #truecrimecommunity #mysterypodcast #truecrime #coldcasefiles #truecrimestories #crimelovers #truecrimeaddict #truecrimejunkie #crimescene #justiceforall #missing #crimesquad #podcastcommunity #sleuthsunite #darkhistories #criminalmindset #detective #detectivediaries #forensics #forensicfiles #crimestories #crimepodcast #traceevidence #traceevidencepodcast #criminalinvestigation #justiceforvictims #detectivework #truecrimediscussion #podcastfamily #listenandsolve #crimefans #listentotraceevidence #uncoverthetruth #podcastrecommendations #podcastlove #podcastlife #truecrimeobsessed #followtheclues #cluefinders #podcastaddict #unsolvedmurders #unsolveddisappearances #detectiveatheart #jointheinvestigation #disappearance #vanishing #abduction #gonemissing #upandvanished #pacheco #stevenpacheco #podcasting #crimetalk #crimeanalysis #theories #realcrimes #disappeared #evidence #markley #johnmarkley #shellymarkley #trumbullcounty #OhioUnsolved #Ohiotrucrime #bristolville #farmington #warren #DurstBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/trace-evidence--3207798/support.
