Two women. Two locations forty miles apart. Eight years between discoveries. And forensic anthropology that connected the tool marks on their remains to the same type of instrument — the same characteristics, years apart. This look back examines the forensic thread that ties Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor together in the Rex Heuermann case, and what it reveals about the pattern prosecutors built across the full span of the investigation.Valerie Mack was a Jane Doe for twenty years — found in Manorville in 2000 and along Ocean Parkway in 2011, identified only through genetic genealogy in 2020. Jessica Taylor was twenty years old, found in the same two-location pattern — Manorville in 2003, Ocean Parkway in 2011. A hair on Valerie's remains matched the DNA of Heuermann's family members. A hair on a surgical drape beneath Jessica's remains matched Heuermann's own DNA. The planning document recovered from his computer included preparation notes that prosecutors say matched the condition of both women's remains.Heuermann pleaded guilty to both murders as part of the agreement covering seven victims, and admitted to an eighth. His defense attorney acknowledged that two pre-trial rulings — the admission of DNA evidence and the denial of separate trials — drove the decision to plead. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting. Valerie waited twenty years for a name. Jessica was found twice over eight years. The forensic connection between them is where this case's full scope begins to come into focus.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? LawPod host Dr Lauren Dempster speaks with Oran Finegan, director of Forensic Action International, about his 25+ years as a forensic specialist in humanitarian and human rights work across 50+ global contexts with agencies including the United Nations (UN), The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Finnegan describes beginning in Bosnia in 1998, where documenting mass atrocities underscored both the worst of humanity and the drive to return identities to the dead and support accountability. He emphasises building domestic forensic capacity, culturally and religiously sensitive practice, and trust-building through communication with families and communities, including collaboration with Islamic law scholars on field concerns like autopsy. The discussion covers applications beyond conflict, migration and climate disasters, along with risks, underfunding, and political will. Finegan outlines humanitarian forensics as integrating dignity, system strengthening, and accountability, and shares his current work on planned recovery and analysis at Tuam in Ireland following findings linked to 796 deaths and commingled infant remains.

In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm examining the disturbing case of Shawn Michael Grate, a serial killer whose crimes spanned a decade across northern Ohio and left multiple families forever changed. What makes this case especially unsettling is not only the length of time the murders continued, but how many opportunities there may have been to stop the violence sooner. As investigators pieced together the evidence, a clearer picture emerged of a predator who targeted vulnerable women, leaving behind unanswered questions and unimaginable heartbreak. As a forensic death investigator, I walk through the timeline of the investigation, the evidence that ultimately connected the cases, and the forensic and investigative techniques that helped bring long-awaited answers to the victims' families. We'll also discuss how missing persons investigations, crime scene evidence, and victim identification play critical roles in solving complex serial homicide cases. But as with every case I cover, I want to keep the focus where it belongs. On the victims. Each woman had a life, a story, and people who loved her. Behind every headline was someone whose future was stolen far too soon. Their lives deserve to be remembered with dignity, not simply as part of a criminal's history. This episode explores the realities of serial homicide investigations while honoring the individuals whose stories might otherwise be overshadowed by the person responsible. This episode contains discussion of homicide, sexual violence, and serial murder. Listener discretion is advised.

AI isn't necessarily creating impossible new attacks, but it is drastically lowering the technical barrier to entry for cybercriminals. In this episode, Ashish Rajan speaks with Simon Biggs, Cyber Incident Response Specialist at Varonis, about how AI is accelerating the attack lifecycle. Simon explains how attackers are using AI kits to instantly set up ephemeral phishing portals, query SQL databases in minutes, and bypass AI guardrails to compile Remote Access Trojans (RATs). We also discuss the shift in ransomware tactics from "encryption-first" to "data-theft-first," and how AI empowers attackers to post-process terabytes of stolen data to monetize it in novel ways. Ellie sits in her finest bistro chair to join Michelle for an almost academic discussion about comedian genetics, musical theatre high school, FORENSICS (trigger warning for those sick of it, note that Ellie had never heard of it) and an in-depth look at two of their favorite movies, Little Shop of Horrors & My Cousin Vinny. Which begs the question: Did the movies you loved as a kid hold up? Or were our brains just so soft at that point that nothing could possibly top them? Who am I, and how did I end up investigating death for a living? In this very first episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm sharing my story, from my path into nursing to becoming a Forensic Nurse Death Investigator. I'll talk about what drew me to this unique profession, what it's really like to investigate deaths, and why I felt called to create this podcast. Over the years, I've responded to countless death scenes, worked alongside law enforcement, medical examiners, and families experiencing unimaginable loss. Those experiences have taught me that every death has a story, and understanding that story requires compassion, science, careful investigation, and sometimes asking difficult questions. Pushing Up Lilies was created to give listeners an honest look behind the scenes of death investigation. Whether you're fascinated by forensic science, curious about how cases are solved, or simply interested in the realities of this profession, I hope this podcast helps educate, inspire, and answer questions you've always wondered about. If you're new here, welcome. This episode is the perfect place to begin. If you've been listening for a while, thank you for being part of this journey. I'm so glad you're here. Join me as I share the story behind the microphone, and the path that led me to Pushing Up Lilies.

Peter digs into Trivolve Tech's forensic management system after it passed 100,000 on-chain transactions on Cardano mainnet. The episode looks at what the milestone actually represents, how the evidence workflow appears to use hashing and zero-knowledge proofs, and why it stands out as a live government-style deployment rather than another proof of concept.Peter also connects the project to Trivolve Tech's broader work in India, including IndianChain and land-record infrastructure tied to millions of farmers and millions of acres. The result is a grounded look at how Cardano is being used for chain-of-custody records, tamper detection, and large-scale public-sector data integrity.Key Takeaways:- Trivolve Tech's forensic management system has surpassed 100,000 on-chain transactions on Cardano mainnet.- The use case focuses on preserving chain-of-custody integrity for police forensic evidence in India.- The workflow described in Catalyst materials combines SHA-256 hashing with zero-knowledge proofs to detect tampering without exposing sensitive evidence data.- Peter links the project to earlier Cardano Foundation work with Dubai Police, suggesting a broader pattern for blockchain-based forensic records.- Trivolve Tech's IndianChain proposal extends the story beyond forensics into government land and agriculture settlement records.- The episode frames this as practical enterprise adoption on Cardano, not a speculative or purely experimental demo.Links & References:- x.com: https://link.learncardano.io/4eWNUc- https://link.learncardano.io/Fkgrh4- Securing Forensic Chain of Custody for Indian State Govt (1million+ cases per year) Using Cardano and Zero-Knowledge Proofs: https://link.learncardano.io/GM6wgh- IndianChain: Indian Government's 10M+ Settlements on Cardano: https://link.learncardano.io/gEWuXU- x.com: https://link.learncardano.io/OpHZnR- Dubai Police will use blockchain to conduct investigations: https://link.learncardano.io/iKza9NWebsite: https://link.learncardano.io/bQ68RcX/Twitter: https://link.learncardano.io/3a1QtvDisclaimer: This content is for educational purposes only. We talk about crime shows, fingerprints, toxicology, illicit drugs, and what really happens inside a forensic laboratory. In last week's episode, I explored the tragic death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf and the events that unfolded during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. This week, I'm following the case into the courtroom as we examine The State of Texas vs. Karmelo Anthony. During this episode, I'll walk through the key moments of the trial, the arguments presented by both the prosecution and defense, and the jury's ultimate decision. We'll discuss the self-defense claim raised by the defense, the testimony presented during the proceedings, and the factors that may have influenced the outcome. I'll also review the sentencing phase and the emotional victim impact statements delivered by Austin's family. As always, my goal is not to sensationalize tragedy, but to help listeners better understand the investigative and legal processes that follow a violent death. Cases like this often generate strong opinions and intense public discussion, but inside the courtroom, decisions must be based on evidence, testimony, and the law. Join me as we take a closer look at one of the most closely watched criminal trials in recent Texas history and examine the legal journey from a fatal encounter to a murder conviction.

Just text us!As organized crime gets bolder and more sophisticated, so do the tools that retailers can deploy to stop criminals in their tracks.  ORC has become a $112 billion annual loss for retailers with mass theft feeding fencing operations across a retail enterprise. Every retailer needs to be concerned about what these gangs are up to, how they're infiltrating their organizations and impacting not just their profitability, but also the safety of their customers and their employees. It has gotten so flagrant that 90 percent of frontline workers say they've had situations in the store that make them feel unsafe. Join Shelley and Gary Sankri, Retail Lead at Esri, as they discuss risk assessment and reveal the strategies and forensics tools retailers can use to reverse this ORC tide. They explain how data sharing, facial recognition, parking lot surveillance, escape routes, license plate readers, timing analysis, heat maps, RFID scanning tools and high-tech security cameras that are loaded with heat and sonic sensors that are valuable ammunition in arsenals to fight retail crime. Listen and learn how to be highly-alert and proactive to help prevent ORC. Special Guest:Gary Sankary, Retail Industry Lead, EsriFor more strategic insights and compelling content, visit TheRobinReport.com, where you can read, watch, and listen to content from Robin Lewis and other retail industry experts, and be sure to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter.

In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm covering the heartbreaking case of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a high school student whose life was tragically cut short during what should have been an ordinary day at a track meet. In April 2025, a confrontation between two young men at a Frisco, Texas, athletic event ended in an act of violence that shocked a community and made headlines across the country. What began as a disagreement escalated in a matter of moments, leaving one family grieving the loss of a son, brother, friend, and teammate. As a forensic death investigator, I walk through the known timeline of events, the investigation that followed, and the legal proceedings involving Karmelo Anthony. I also discuss the difficult realities surrounding youth violence, split-second decisions, and the devastating consequences that can follow. But as with every case I cover, I want to keep the focus where it belongs. On Austin. On the life he lived, the people who loved him, and the future that was taken from him far too soon. This episode is approached with compassion and respect for everyone affected by this tragedy. Beyond the headlines, this is the story of a young life lost and a community forever changed. This episode contains discussion of violence, homicide, and the death of a minor.  Listener discretion is advised.

In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm covering the heartbreaking case of Rachel Castillo, a young mother whose disappearance in Southern California led investigators to a devastating discovery, and ultimately, the conviction of her estranged husband, Zarbab Ali. Rachel vanished during what should have been a routine custody exchange involving her children. But almost immediately, investigators began uncovering signs that something was terribly wrong. What followed was an intense investigation involving surveillance footage, blood evidence, digital tracking, and a search that ended with Rachel's body being found buried in a remote area. As a forensic death investigator, I walk through how cases like this begin to unfold behind the scenes, how small pieces of evidence start forming a timeline, how investigators interpret behavioral patterns, and how critical those early investigative decisions become when someone suddenly disappears under suspicious circumstances. This episode contains discussion of domestic violence, homicide, and burial concealment.  Listener discretion is advised.

The Death of Spencer Irwin: Questions Left Behind

In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm covering the mysterious death of Spencer Irwin, a 30-year-old Fresno City College student whose body was discovered behind a business loading dock in Fresno, California, in August of 2024. What initially appeared to authorities to be a tragic but straightforward case quickly became something far more complicated. Spencer was found naked, with no obvious signs of trauma, and early assumptions pointed toward a drug overdose or transient-related death. But toxicology reports later came back clean. No overdose. No clear explanation. And despite the unanswered questions surrounding his death, the coroner ultimately ruled it “natural causes.” What makes this case especially unsettling is what didn't happen. No autopsy was performed. And Spencer's body was cremated. As a forensic death investigator, I discuss the difficult reality of cases that fall into gray areas, where evidence is limited, assumptions are made early, and families are left searching for answers long after a case is considered closed. Because sometimes the hardest part of an investigation… is not what we know. It's what we don't. This episode contains discussion of death, investigative uncertainty, and unresolved circumstances surrounding the case. Listener discretion is advised.

In this episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm covering the tragic and deeply disturbing case of Sonia Exelby, a 32-year-old woman from Portsmouth, England, who traveled to the United States in October of 2024… and never made it home. According to investigators, Sonia flew into Gainesville, Florida, after connecting online with a man named Dwain Hall through a fetish website. She was expected to return to the UK just three days later, but she never boarded her flight. What followed became an international homicide investigation that shocked both sides of the Atlantic. As I walk through the timeline of Sonia's final days, I do so with compassion and care, because beneath the headlines was a real woman whose life mattered. A woman who trusted someone she believed she knew… and whose story ended in unimaginable tragedy. From an investigative standpoint, I also discuss the complexities of cases involving online relationships, long-distance travel, digital evidence, and how quickly missing person cases can escalate into homicide investigations. This episode is not about judgment or sensationalism. It's about understanding the vulnerability that can exist in human connection, the realities investigators face in cases like this, and honoring the victim at the center of the story. This episode contains discussion of violence, homicide, and sensitive themes involving online exploitation. Please take care of yourself while listening.

Eric and Glenn start the episode with a listener email and then play a numbers themed game of Regional Quirkisms.  For the topic of this episode, the guys discuss a 2025 paper from Simon Cole and Justin Sola titled "First impressions matter: Mundane obstacles to a forensic device for probabilistic reporting in fingerprint analysis".  The article discusses practical and realistic obstacles and hurdles to developing a validated, accepted, and commercially-available statistical model for fingerprint evidence.  The article takes the novel view that most sources cite either "practitioner disinterest" (or worse: practitioner rejection) or lack of push and influence from the Courts, Daubert challenges, or Authoritative bodies.  However, once you remove those two obstacles and assume examiner 'buy-in' and Courts pushing for empirical data over subjective examiner expertise, what 'mundane' obstacles exist that most people don't realize or think about?  The article discusses a number of surprising, non-trivial obstacles that have a huge influence on the state of statistical model development in the field today. Article: Cole, S.A.; Sola, J.L.  First impressions matter: Mundane obstacles to a forensic device for probabilistic reporting in fingerprint analysis.  Social Studies of Science (2025), 55(5): 683-710. https://doi.org/10.1177/03063127251333074

Sixteen year old Jennifer Persia had everything going for her. She played saxophone in the school band, was on the color guard and was becoming a breakout athlete. As a freshman, she was on the varsity track team and medaled in a competition against mostly seniors. Then one quiet, Monday night, someone stole away everything she hoped to be, shattered a family and rocked a small town. On April 4th, 1994, an unknown killer, or killers, entered Jennifer's home and brutally murdered the sixteen year old over a matter of just $200.UPDATE After more than 30 years, DNA has conclusively identified Jennifer's killer.  Not only has her case been solved through the use of genetic genealogy, but it was also discovered that Jennifer was not the monster's only victim.  Twenty-four year old Marebeth Welsh, murdered five months before Jennifer, has also been identified as the victim of thirty-nine year old Francis Schooley.Submit a Tip - https://camdencountypros.org/unit/49Use promo code "Trace" to save 10% on your pass at CrimeCon.comFollowTEPod.comFollow Trace Evidence on Social MediaTwitter --- Instagram --- TikTok --- YouTube --- Like Facebook Page --- Join Facebook Group --- Threads --- Like MeWe Page --- Join MeWe Group --- BlueskySuppport Trace EvidencePatreon --- Paypal --- Cash App --- Buy Me A CoffeeTrace Evidence Merch ShopsTeePublic --- ShopTEPod --- SpreadshopAll Other LinksOfficial Trace Evidence Website --- LinkTreeMusic Courtesy of:"Lost Time"  Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/"Chasing Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/"Galactic Rap" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/#truecrimepodcast #unsolvedmysteries #coldcase #coldcaseinvestigation #murder #murdermystery #missingperson #missingpersons #truecrimecommunity #mysterypodcast #truecrime #coldcasefiles #truecrimestories #crimelovers #truecrimeaddict #truecrimejunkie #crimescene #justiceforall #missing #crimesquad #podcastcommunity #sleuthsunite #darkhistories #criminalmindset #detective #detectivediaries #forensics #forensicfiles #crimestories #crimepodcast #traceevidence #traceevidencepodcast #criminalinvestigation #justiceforvictims #detectivework #truecrimediscussion #podcastfamily #listenandsolve #crimefans #listentotraceevidence #uncoverthetruth #podcastrecommendations #podcastlove #podcastlife #truecrimeobsessed #followtheclues #cluefinders #podcastaddict #unsolvedmurders #unsolveddisappearances #detectiveatheart #jointheinvestigation #disappearance #vanishing #abduction #gonemissing #upandvanished #pacheco #stevenpacheco #podcasting #crimetalk #crimeanalysis #theories #jenniferpersia #persia #magnolia #nj #newjersey #marebethwelsh #welsh #schooley #solved #DNABecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/trace-evidence--3207798/support.
