It's another packed episode of the Empire Podcast, the show that dares to ask the big questions: isn't the Mona Lisa just a woman sitting down? Who's the richest Northern Irish person? Saw! Clayface! Naked Gun!), and review Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later, and the new Pixar joint, Elio. And guest-wise we've also got you covered as Chris sits down with Echo Valley's star-director duo, Julianne Moore and Michael Pearce, [26:05 - 40:09 approx] and the stars of 28 Years Later, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. [1:06:45 - 1:22:26 approx] Will Ralph commit to starring in Chris' new play? Give it a listen and find out. Enjoy!

This week, the boys discuss the remarkable film year of 1953, the events that transpired around the world in that year, and Fritz Lang's “The Big Heat”. Perhaps an early trailblazer of the detective-with-a-personal-vendetta genre (is it a film noir???), this fascinating film led to a productive conversation! We drank a bit this week, too. The focus of this 60th episode of Edinburgh Film Podcast is Wanda, the only feature film directed by American actor-filmmaker Barbara Loden. Released in 1970, the film is set in rural Pennsylvania and tells of a working class woman (Loden) who leaves her husband and young children for a life on the road. She eventually drifts into a fraught, uneasy relationship with petty thief Norman Dennis (Michael Higgins) as he plans a bank robbery. Joining host Dr Pasquale Iannone to talk about Wanda is Dr Elena Gorfinkel, author of a new book on the film which is part of the long-running BFI Film Classics series. Elena is Reader in Film Studies at King's College London. Specialising in underground and independent cinema, her many publications include the 2017 volume Lewd Looks: American Sexploitation Cinema in the 1960s. Her articles and book chapters include pieces on filmmakers such as Andy Warhol, Doris Wishman, Kira Muratova and Kelly Reichardt. Elena is also the curator of a major season currently running at London's BFI Southbank titled Wanda and Beyond: The World of Barbara Loden. In their detailed, wide-ranging conversation, Elena tells Pasquale about her first encounter with Wanda and how she approached the writing of her new book. Discussion then moves on to the film itself, before turning to the curation process for the BFI Loden season. Wanda (2025) is published by Bloomsbury and is out now. The BFI Southbank season Wanda and Beyond: The World of Barbara Loden runs throughout the month of June. For more details, please see the BFI website.

The BFI Film on Film Festival in London will screen rare nitrate film prints, including the oldest ever shown in the UK and a 1977 release print of Star Wars, using strict safety protocols due to nitrate film's flammability. The BFI's archive team selects, inspects, and prepares each print through a multi-stage process involving cold storage, gradual acclimatization, and technical assessment. Specialized fire suppression systems and trained projectionists ensure safe public screenings. The event highlights the preservation and presentation of analog film technology alongside digital advancements.Learn more on this news by visiting us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. This week, the boys head back to 2007 to spin another Roger Deakins film, “No Country For Old Men”, currently streaming on Paramount+. While other shows have covered the film, we shoot from the hip and discuss how it felt to re-watch it and what it means to us. F those other stuffy critic narcs. The cinematographer from Dave's homeland had a helluva a year with three award-winning films, this one winning Best Picture at the Oscars, and cementing the Coen Brothers as industry elites, much to their Chigurh (that's a movie joke). Yeah, it beat “There Will Be Blood”. We talk about it a bit. John also opens with his “MI” and “Friendship” takes. Grab a beer and hear our thoughts. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. We're back in the French Riviera for a very special episode, as Girls On Film returns to the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. This year, host Anna Smith welcomed guests to the second Girls On Film Cannes Do at The Members Club. This glamorous networking event on the beach brought together filmmakers, critics, and creatives celebrating the power of women in cinema. In this episode, you'll hear reflections from our community on what Girls On Film means to them. Later on in the episode Anna reunites with film journalist Wendy Ide who reflects on this year's films, which she says have been of a consistently high standard. Wendy shares her standout picks from the festival, from the fiercely divisive Die, My Love, a visceral exploration of the raw edges of motherhood and mental unravelling, to Sound of Falling, a haunting meditation on how trauma echoes through time and place. She also dives into Sirât, an allegorical road movie, in which gender and disability are refreshingly incidental, not defining. Plus other titles that are already generating serious awards buzz. And finally, we're joined by Liza van der Smissen and Nicole Lieberman, founders of the Female Film Club. This trailblazing global network uplifts women in the industry through practical workshops, seminars and a thriving, supportive community. They share the story behind their mission and how they're helping to reshape the future of film, one powerful connection at a time. They also unveil an exciting new opportunity: a £10,000 investment in a short film, designed to give back to their talented global community. To enter from 16th June onwards, filmmakers must join their networking space. The boys head to Japan this week to discuss Akira Kurosawa's “Yojimbo”. Starring Toshiro Mifune, the film is considered one of the most influential movies of all time. It's so influential that an entire series of westerns ripped it off so good they couldn't be released in the US for years due to threats of lawsuits. Anyway, this film is awesome, but did the boys think it stands up to the other Kurosawa greats? Grab a beer and tune in! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. Episode 126 - Inside the BFI National Archives - Film on Film Festival - Special EpisodeFor this early release of the podcast, I'm taking you behind the scenes at the BFI National Archive in Berkhamsted. The reason for the early drop? Tickets for the BFI's excellent Film on Film Festival go on sale to the public tomorrow, 9th May 2025, and I wanted to give you a bit of insight into what makes this event so special. The Film on Film Festival runs from the 12th to the 15th of June and is dedicated entirely to screenings on physical film – from 35mm to 16mm, and even nitrate. It's a rare opportunity to experience films as they were originally shown, in all their analogue glory. While at the archive, I spoke with several of the experts who help make the festival possible and who work daily to preserve the history of cinema. You'll hear from:James Bell – Senior Curator of Fiction and Programme Director, Film on Film FestivalChris Stenner – Film Laboratory LeadSonia Genaitay – Curatorial ArchivistMartin Coffill – Projectionist and QCDavid Jones – Film Scanning LeadA huge thanks to Kieron Webb and Sarah Bemand for organising the day. It was a real privilege to explore the archive, meet the people who keep the machines running and the prints in circulation, and to share it all with you here. If you're attending the festival on the 12th, please do let me know and be sure to say "hi".BFI Film on FilmAll my links

In the pantheon of great Van Damme action flicks from the 1980s and 90s, 'Hard Target' (1993) undoubtedly stands out as one of his best. As hunky Cajun ex-Marine, Chance Boudreaux, the mullet-wearing 'Muscles from Brussels' struts his more sensitive side while also exhibiting the sort of superhero antics that would put Schwarzenegger to shame, like firing a pistol while standing on a moving motorbike and - famously - punching a snake. He has his director to thank for one of his most iconic roles: John Woo, the 'heroic bloodshed' maestro fresh from his ballistic Hong Kong masterpiece, 'Hard Boiled' (1992), and determined to make an impact in his American directorial debut. The resulting concoction is pure Woo - a slow-motion bullet ballet of epic proportions which cemented his position as one of cinema's greatest directors of action. Joining me and 'Life of Action' author Mike Fury to discuss this milestone in movie mayhem is Christina Newland, lead film critic at the i Paper and a contributing editor to Empire Magazine. As three dedicated Jean-Claude Van Damme fans, we unpick the reasons why we think his appeal is more inclusive than that of his action contemporaries - people like Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, and Chuck Norris - and the lasting legacy that John Woo has had on action cinema. This episode was recorded live at the Nova Cinema in Woking, UK, in November 2024 as part of the British Film Institute's Art of Action season. Today we're giving Cassiah Joski-Jethi some Really Good Exposure! Cassiah is an award-winning mixed-race writer/director represented by Independent, who began her career working for writer/director Gurinder Chadha OBE after a chance meeting on a train. Meg talks to Cassiah about how the hell you get into directing without going to film school, how Cassiah supports herself as a creative freelancer while also making a pretty daunting industry more accessible to people who can't afford to go to film school, and why it is so important to find joy in creativity that isn't about work. Cassiah shares her tips for breaking into writing/directing, her methods of connecting with other creatives who she learnt from at the beginning of her career, and how to keep yourself sane in an industry that can feel somewhat bleak at times! Cassiah has directed five short films including her recent award-winning BFI Network film 'Catch A Butcher' which screened at multiple BAFTA/BIFA festivals, and was acquired by ALTER and BFI Player. Most recently, Cassiah directed the BBC Studios short award-winning thriller 'The Pink Pill'. She was also recently a Trainee Director on Apple TV's ‘Hijack' mentored by director/showrunner Jim Field Smith, and has also been mentored by director Claire McCarthy. Cassiah is now working on her debut feature projects, including one in development with the BFI. In 2024, Cassiah was selected for the prestigious BRIT List, as well as selected for BFI Network@LFF 2024, and this year, she has been selected for BFI Midlands Directors Lab 2025. Parkour pioneer Sébastien Foucan can be credited for bringing Parkour to the masses. His seminal UK documentary, 'Jump London' (2003) - and its follow up, 'Jump Britain' (2005) - sparked a cultural phenomenon which would see youngsters take to the streets in wild, acrobatic, hair-raising abandon; running, climbing and leaping across their urban environment in scenes we still see on our streets today. For Sébastien, a movie career followed, with stand-out roles in action films including 'Casino Royale' (2006) and 'The Tournament' (2009). Those perceptive enough to see the inspiration behind his incredible physical abilities and derring-do would be quick to reference the work of Jackie Chan, whose stunt-filled films would prove to be one of the early catalysts for Sébastien and his friends to take to the streets of Paris, recreating what they saw in his movies. Today, Sébastien is an inspirational speaker and CEO of the Foucan Academy, teaching kids the art of movement and self-expression. His motto: "we play".On this episode - recorded live at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre in Canterbury as part of the British Film Institute's Art of Action season - Sébastien explores his love of Hong Kong action cinema (especially the films of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee), his experiences working in Hollywood, current attitudes towards Parkour, and much more. This conversation was recorded after a screening of the 1978 Jackie Chan classic, 'Drunken Master', and is co-hosted by the 'Life of Action' author - and friend of the show - Mike Fury. A huge thank you to the crew at the Gulbenkian and the people of Canterbury who attended the show, and the Independent Cinema Office and Film Hub South East for helping to organise the event.LINKSSébastien Foucan on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sebastienfoucan/Sébastien Foucan on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Seb-Foucan/100010605671158/ Sébastien Foucan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sebastien-foucan/ Sébastien Foucan website: https://www.sebastienfoucan.com/ Foucan Academy: https://foucanacademy.com/ 'Jump Britain' on YouTube: https://youtu.be/2TJurAP9l-Q?si=Abborgj9sRKdOKMN Chase scene from 'Casino Royale': https://youtu.be/iZxNbAwY_rk?si=9RvrgPTeoUWGT0GZ Sébastien Foucan on 'Ninja Warrior UK': https://youtu.be/o7YFOF1oeag?si=hjKZ23vx9DT-6S-k Mike Fury on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themikefury/Mike Fury's website: https://www.mikefury.net/'Drunken Master' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/DrunkenMasterKFMG'Drunken Master' trailer: https://youtu.be/WSu-9X8NF9k?si=BNVVYygZ7Ke_VdYpBuy 'Drunken Master' on Blu-ray: https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/drunken-master/Visit the Gulbenkian Arts Centre in Canterbury: https://thegulbenkian.co.uk/Learn more about the BFI's Art of Action season: https://www.bfi.org.uk/art-actionA huge thank you to Independent Cinema Office (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/) and Film Hub South East (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/film-hub-south-east/) Hosted on Acast. This week, the boys stay positive as they take a look at Ridley Scott's first proper film, “The Duelists,” from 1977! This week Jim dips into Flesh for Frankenstein, Darren watches Death of a Unicorn while Lee enthuses over his newly night purchased Commodore 64... What follows is some nostalga bait and then some intense peer pressure for Darren as we try to make him spend money on a zx spectrum. After that with Asking for Trouble, we get into the thorny issue of time travelling and killing hitler a question that isn't quite as easily answered as you might think, before we all collectively realise that Lee hasn't really got over The Fifth Element. Then finally its on to this weeks film, a pretentious pile of arse that needs you to do the work for the writers? Or a deep challenging psychological surreal study into the nature of a broken mans desire for freedom? Or an arachnophobes nightmare? What links McDonald's "Iconic needs no explanation" by Leo Burnett, KFC's gravy take over of the BFI and Kellogg's "See you in the morning" also by Leo Burnett? These three ads are the latest in a line of out-of-home posters that zoom in on products, alter or remove logos and have minimal text. Tesco, Heinz and B&Q have also created similar ads. While this might be a trend, it certainly isn't new. A 1990 Silk Cut ad "Slash" by Saatchi & Saatchi also had a similar minimalist style and more recently in 2023, Barbie released an entirely pink billboard with only "July 21" in the corner to promote the release of the film.Campaign's editorial team discuss if original ideas still exist in outdoor ads and if all the good ideas have been taken. Hosted by tech editor Lucy Shelley, this episode features editor Maisie McCabe, creativity and culture editor Alessandra Scotto di Santolo and deputy creativity and culture editor Charlotte Rawlings.Further reading:Is the art of out-of-home copywriting under threat?Playing with the logo is nothing new; but it might signal a return to intelligent advertisingThe distinctive asset in the room Hosted on Acast. This week, we head to 1964 to discuss John Frankenheimer's “The Train,” a film that begs the question: How much do train mechanics know about art? Just kidding, it's an awesome film with Burt Lancaster in the lead performance butting heads with legendary antagonist Paul Scofield as an SS Captain hoping to smuggle French art from Paris to Germany before the Allies liberate France's capital city. This week on the show, Jeff's audio is crap, but the conversation is great! John kicks us off with a mini-review of Steven Soderbergh's “Black Bag”, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. Once he gives his thoughts, we gripe about filming expenses in LA and the US as a whole and compostables before getting to our featured conversation, “Dial ‘M' For Murder”, the Alfred Hitchcock classic. The week on the show, we welcome back our music sponsor and artist in residence, DASEIN, using John's crap audio to discuss Spielberg's 2nd of 4 (at least) WWII epics, “Empire of The Sun.” The random year generator spun 1987, a year we visited to discuss Bertolucci's “The Last Emperor”, but we still gave you some set-up of what was happening around the world to add context to why in the hell two movies about empires set in China were two of the biggest movies of 1987.
