We bid a fond farewell to our Acteurist Spotlight on Delphine Seyrig with the greatest movie of all-time (as of the most recent BFI critics' poll), Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai de Commerce 1080 Bruxelles (1975) and its "sequel," Golden Eighties (1986), Akerman's retro-80s-while-it's -still-happening musical. We give our latest thoughts on anxiety, oppression, and orgasms in Jeanne Dielman before turning to a very different Jeanne played by Seyrig and a different aspect of Akerman's grappling with her family history. In today's on Girls On Film we're unpacking The Perfect Neighbor - a powerful Netflix documentary that's up for an Oscar and a BAFTA. It investigates the shooting of Ajike Owens, a mother of four who was beloved in her tight-knit community in Florida. Owen's neighbour shot her in 2023, after a years-long campaign of harassment that sewed division in their shared neighbourhood. Using police body-cam footage, the documentary pieces together the events that led to this tragedy and asks important questions about what enabled it to happen. Anna sits down with its director and producer Geeta Gandbhir to talk about the making of this tough and urgent film, why its story needs to be brought to the screen, and how filmmaking like this can be a tool for social change. Spiv Noir.According to the billing, the stars of 1948's Noose (known as The Silk Noose in the US) are Carole Landis, Joseph Calleia & Derek Farr, but the real star of the film is Nigel Patrick who is cast against type as Bar Gorman, a sharply dressed, fast talking spiv.Set firmly in Soho, it tells the story of how the police, the press & a group of normal citizens, try to loosen the choke-hold of gangsters on the city. The film is one of a group of films known as "the spiv cycle".The director, Edmond T. Gréville, also directed Beat Girl which is straight from the fridge daddio.Dr Josephine Botting, curator at the BFI, joins us to talk about Noose, Edmond T. Philippa Lowthorpe, the writer-director behind H is For Hawk, and the film's star, Claire Foy, join Anna Smith to discuss the moving adaptation of Helen Macdonald's hit memoir, co-starring Brendan Gleeson, Denise Gough, Lindsay Duncan and Sam Spruell. Philippa speaks frankly to Anna about the film's poetic embodiment of the experience of grief, which produces a story that is both powerful and inspiring. Claire and Philippa discuss the process of collaboration, and consider how the on-set dynamics allowed for an element of freedom in Claire's performance. Claire's embodiment of Helen is represented beautifully by Philippa, whose documentary background informed her process of capturing the moment. No film made with live, wild animals is without its challenges, and Claire and Philippa speak to Anna about the incredible experience of working with hawks on set, Claire's own personal reflections of working with them, and the intense, ethical falconry techniques and training involved. Finally, Philippa and Claire discuss bringing the role of Helen to life in all her messy complexity with the support of the film's producer Dede Gardner. Georgia is a creative ageing specialist, academic, pro-ageing advocate and Applied Theatre expert. Her work is focussed on the elderly population, care homes and ageing positively. Using her creative powers to spread the word of issues within the older community and how the problems they are facing can be eradicated.Georgia's practice started in 2014 when she founded a resident-led theatre company while being an Activities Co-ordinator for one of the UK's leading care home providers. Since then she has worked with other homes, hospitals, shelters and digital platforms creating spaces for creativity, critical reflection and building communities. Earning recognition at some of the most prestigious institutions such as the Tate Modern, Alexandra Palace, BBC, BFI and The Stage. She holds a BA(Hons) in Performing Arts and Music from the University of Chichester and an MA in Applied Theatre from Central School of Speech and Drama. In 2023 she completed her PhD from the University of Portsmouth with her thesis “Applied Theatre in Later Life: Facilitation, Participation and Shame Resilience”. Exploring how theatre can support emotional well-being and the collective voices in the elderly community. On top of all this she is the programme leader and lecturer for the BA(Hons) Applied and Contemporary Theatre at the Guildford School of Acting. After Mount Vesuvius erupted - and original hosts Rome pulled out - the British Olympic council sent a letter, dated 19th November, 1906, agreeing to host the fourth modern Olympic games. With just two years to go, the event was put together hastily, and on a paltry budget; a stadium erected at the White City home of the Franco-British exhibition, and the chosen events ones that British athletes excelled at, including polo, lacrosse, tug of war, deer-shooting, and duelling. This “dangerous” film is Polanski's first English-language movie, shot in London during the peak of the French New Wave (Polanski is a Polish-French filmmaker). “Repulsion” offers indie-film groundedness, a gritty reality, noir-inspired neorealism, and an upheaval of social values of the time- sexual liberation, classism, irony, and iconoclasm. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle.
