I want you to think back to the last time you were at full draw and something in your head started talking. Not the calm rundown of yardage and pin placement. The other voice. The one that shows up uninvited and starts narrating the worst version of what's about to happen. I always figured that voice mattered. I just wasn't consistent about doing anything with it, if I'm honest, until I sat down with Carter Starocci this summer. If you don't follow wrestling, here's what you need to know: Carter is a five-time national champion at Penn State, the first man ever to do it. By the time he was chasing that fourth and fifth title, the pressure wasn't hypothetical anymore. Every match had a target on it. I asked him what he was doing with his head between whistles, and what he told me reframed how I think about my own competition, and then how I think about hunting. The first thing he said: the words you use with yourself become true, not mystically, mechanically. Rehearse "I always blow it when they get close" for twenty seasons and your nervous system stops reacting to the deer and starts reacting to the story. Heart rate spikes early. Hands shake. You rush a shot you had plenty of time to make. The second thing cuts deeper. At his level, the difference between competitors isn't physical anymore, it's mental. Everybody left on the mat can wrestle. We've all hunted with a guy who shoots lights out in July and can't hold it together when a shooter steps out in November. It was never his form. Nobody had drilled what was supposed to run through his head in that moment. The third thing changed how I think about stand time specifically: you remove the anxiety by not making the hunt the whole goal. It's just the next rep in a career built out of reps. I felt that firsthand this year, in a BJJ tournament and out on the plains chasing a genuine giant. Neither result was the point while I was in it. That's exactly what let both of them happen. This episode builds a four-question filter for running that self-talk audit on stand, and it's not an off-season-only project. It's before, during, and after. Go build your one line. Brian and Jake sit down with Christian Sailer fresh off his seventh USPSA Open Nationals title. Christian walked through his approach to the match despite only having about 2,000 rounds through his open gun since the last World Shoot and only five practice sessions leading in, explaining how he balances a full-time job with elite-level competition. He broke down his mistake on the first stage, his recovery strategy across the following days, and the four-stage push he needed at the end to seal the win. Christian detailed his training philosophy, splitting focus between fundamentals and specific stage execution drills built from a running document of mistakes he reviews after every match. The conversation shifted to IPSC Nationals, where Christian confirmed he'll be shooting Limited Optics on Squad 301 alongside Eric Grauffel, JJ Racaza, Aaron Adams, and others, setting up the long-awaited head-to-head matchup he's been calling for since 2019. Deer management in Ohio Deer populations are becoming an increasingly visible issue in urban communities across Ohio. They cause tens of thousands of vehicle crashes each year that kill both people and deer. There's also concern of property damage and the impact on local ecosystems. This has prompted some cities to take a closer look at deer management. Medina is among the communities tackling this issue. The city recently developed a more comprehensive initiative involving federal support following two years of a city-run bowhunting program. Last year, 114 deer were harvested through that program, compared with 18 the year before. Currently, the population is around 1,000, or about one deer for every 26 residents. Shannon Simmons just won the national championship in women's pole vault for the 50 to 54-year-old Masters division. She took 20 years off from the sport. Came back two and a half years ago. And won. But this conversation isn't really about pole vaulting. It's about what happens when you come back to something you thought was behind you. What it takes. What it makes possible. And why the thing you put down might still be waiting for you. Shannon is one of my clients and one of my Ohio people — and I was lucky enough to be on the track with her and her daughter the weekend before nationals. I photographed them together. Her daughter is now learning to pole vault.
