The NDT industry has established in-depth guidelines and requirements for formal classroom training, but a shortfall in the standardization of on-the-job training (OJT) requirements remains.Donald Booth, CEO of the American Institute of Nondestructive Testing, explains.
Levothyroxine (T4-only therapy) has long been the standard treatment for hypothyroidism. However, many patients continue to experience persistent symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and depression—even when their lab results appear "normal." Could adding T3—the active thyroid hormone—be the key to feeling better? In this episode, we take a comprehensive look at T3-inclusive treatment options, including natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) and synthetic combination therapies that contain both T4 and T3. We'll review recent research comparing the effectiveness of T4-only versus combination therapies, discuss patient-reported outcomes, and examine the growing interest in individualized thyroid care. You'll also hear about the real-world challenges patients face when seeking T3-based treatment—such as resistance from providers, limited access to prescriptions, and cost concerns. We'll share expert-backed advice and practical tips for advocating for your care, finding informed healthcare providers, and accessing affordable T3 medications safely.Whether you're newly diagnosed or still struggling with symptoms on levothyroxine, this episode from Paloma Health offers critical insights into whether a T3-inclusive approach may be right for you.Need more information? Thanks for having me. It's an exciting event that we're here at. So we're really looking forward to this. Allen Hall: There is so much happening at Gulf Wind at the minutes. Uh, just been watching some of your intellectual property pop out and some of the new things that are at this show. Uh, all kinds of areas that you're investing in, in terms of blade repairs that have been needed for probably two or three years and. At this point you, you have good solutions. The one I think we're most interested to hear about is the blade route, bushing, or insert. Repair that happens of tower because Joel Saxum: everybody's asking about it. I think that's the important thing there is, first off, we need to get some common language around what this problem is. Yeah. So everybody's calling it root, bushings root and this infusion like, ah, what are we actually calling? What are the terms, how you brand this? Exactly. David King: Yeah. I mean, just you say it's really been a long time coming. It's something we've been involved with now for well [00:01:00] over. Three years, and we got introduced originally as an RCA. And so, you know, when you get into something like a root cause analysis, you know, one of the first things you gotta do is actually establish the terms you're gonna use, establish the definitions, create a common framework that you can communicate around. And so when it comes to this particular issue, a lot of it really starts with how do customers get sensitized to this? We've seen everything from some customers getting sensitized through, uh, unfortunately a blade failure. A blade that ends up on the ground. Joel Saxum: Yeah, David King: that's probably the worst scenario. We've seen others where they'll see things like. Dust, uh, on the outside of the gel coat that's starting to build up, uh, gapping, where you have fundamentally a, a visible gap forming between the blade root and the pitch bearing, uh, where you see visible daylight in some cases. Yeah. Um, you really want to try and catch things, obviously much earlier than that, but kind of the, the, the common themes here all around a loss of connection between the metal root bushing and the composite laminate, which caused the blade to become loose from the pitch bearing. So just kind of walk through that system maybe a little bit. Um, you've got the composite blade which has to transfer [00:02:00] load into a metal pitch bearing, Joel Saxum: right? David King: Metal pitch bearing's gotta be able to spin so the blade can pitch, produce, power, and do all the things we need to do. And it's one of the most complicated parts of the blade really. 'cause you're trying to transfer load from composite to metal and you have this massive stiffness difference between metal. And composites. And so it takes some very clever engineering to bring those things together and, um, get an even load distribution. And so the way that's done today is through a metal root bushing. So it's essentially a, uh, precast metal piece, um, that has geometry to it that allows both mechanical and a chem...

In the aerospace industry, compliance is not just a requirement, but a culture. Senior Aerospace Weston places significant importance on workplace standards—which is why it has installed more than 50 Filtermist oil mist filters. Working primarily with OEMs like Rolls-Royce, Airbus, MTU Engines, Spirit Aerosystems, and many other prestigious clients, Senior Aerospace Weston manufactures a variety of aerofoil and aerostructure components for various platforms in the commercial aviation market. Founded in 1937 and acquired by Senior plc in 2011, the Earby-based manufacturer is now part of an FTSE 250-listed group with over 6,800 employees in 12 countries. As part of a global group in the top echelons of aerospace manufacturing with 3 to 5-axis machining and grinding, CAD/CAM, assembly, NDT, surface treatment, robotic polishing, and much more – achieving standards is critical. Gary Bell from Senior Aerospace Weston says: “Here at Senior Airspace Weston, we believe in maintaining good, orderly, clean standards, housekeeping, and a good working environment. A clean working environment is essential to ensure that we produce our high-specification components.” Providing more detail on the machine shop, Gary adds, “We make a variety of aerospace components for different aircraft programmes and work with a range of materials. This is predominantly aluminium, but we also work with titanium, bronze, nimonic, inconel and steel. We have lots of different types of CNC machining centres with 3, 4, and 5-axis machines. Each machine is specified to manufacture certain types of components, and this is why we have such a wide variety.” With Filtermist extraction units, including the FX6002 and FX7002 on 58 of the company's machine tools, it is imperative that oil mist is extracted from the machines. As Gary adds: “The type of high-speed machining that we undertake produces oil mist that needs removing from the working environment. Our first thought was to look at the industry-leading standards, and Filtermist was the name that first came up. We engaged with them straight away, and they were extremely helpful in giving us some advice and support. They were able to come on-site and carry out a free survey so that they were able to specify exactly what equipment would be available to support our needs.” With machine tools from leading manufacturers such as Matsuura, DN Solutions via Mills CNC, Grob and Hermle among others on-site, Gary continues: “In total, we have 58 Filtermist extraction units. Some machines require multiple Filtermist units to be installed to ensure the volume is extracted quickly and efficiently. We have a huge variety of machines, and the Filtermist units are flexible enough to accommodate the different types, sizes and requirements of those machines. We have machines that are large in scale, so we needed something that was able to extract from all those different types of scenarios effectively.” Discussing the maintenance requirements and the ongoing relationship with Filtermist, Gary says: “The beauty of the Filtermist system is it's easily serviceable, so we can specify whether the Filtermist units are standalone or mounted to the equipment. They are easily accessible for the service engineers to come in and replace any components effectively and quickly. The Filtermist units are fitted with F monitors, which are a really easy-to-use system. The operators can see at a glance using the traffic light system whether there are any issues with the effectiveness of the extraction.” Using the globally recognised ‘traffic light' system of coloured warning lights to alert machine operators when the unit needs servicing, the F Monitor measures velocity pressure to check the airflow through the Filtermist oil mist collector is correct. The Bluetooth-enabled F Monitor 2 measures airflow and time, and the F Monitor 2+ also monitors vibration and motor temperature - making it even easier to identify when the Filtermist unit needs servicing. For existing customers, the F Monitors
This week's special guest, Andi Hektor, takes us on a deep dive into his journey from academia to entrepreneurship, how GScan is tackling critical infrastructure challenges, and why he chose Cambridge as the company's UK base.GScan is pioneering Muon tomography, an advanced scanning technology originally used for border security but now revolutionising non-destructive testing (NDT) in construction. The technology helps detect corrosion and structural weaknesses in bridges and buildings, preventing costly and environmentally harmful demolitions. “Bridges are often demolished as a precaution because engineers can't see inside them. We provide that visibility, potentially doubling their lifespan.”Initially setting up in London, Andi quickly realised Cambridge's startup ecosystem was the ideal home for GScan: “London's tech scene is great, but for deep tech, it's easy to get lost. In Cambridge, you can build a network fast. The Bradfield Centre has been amazing.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Email us! Allen Hall: Welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast Spotlight. I'm your host, Allen Hall, along with my co host, Joel Saxum. Today, we're diving into revolutionary blade inspection technology from 8-Tree. 8-Tree's WaveCheck system uses 3D optical scanning and augmented reality to detect and measure surface defects on wind turned blades with unprecedented precision. Joining us is Erik Klaas, the co founder and CTO of 8-Tree, and Johannes Leib, a program manager with 8-Tree, who brings over 15 years of wind blade industry experience, specializing in composites and fiber reinforced plastics. Joel Saxum: Welcome to Uptime Spotlight, shining light on wind energy's brightest innovators. This is the Progress Powering Tomorrow. Allen Hall: Erik and Johannes, welcome to the show. Erik Klaas: We are glad to be on your podcast. Allen Hall: I'm excited to talk to both of you because I've seen your technology on YouTube quite a bit and now on LinkedIn and it's quite impressive. And I want to start by asking really, how are you trying to handle wrinkles? It seems like wrinkles are a huge problem in the wind industry. They're hard to detect and we're getting escapes out of the factory. You want to discuss how big of an issue wrinkles are. And Blades is at the moment. Erik Klaas: Yeah, most likely this is a good topic for Johannes to speak about for one hour. But as I got into this business late, maybe I get to give you my perspective. So when I got into the wind business first, our legacy is in aerospace. So I saw a wrinkle and I never thought it could be such a problem or lead to catastrophic results. What is a wrinkle? I happen to have a separate part here. Which is a mock up that we did. We do this for testing our system. A wrinkle basically is a deviation in the glass fiber layup of a turbine blade. And it's very small, so you can't even almost not see it. But it can lead to the blade cracking in these particular areas where the wrinkle happens. And therefore, the inspector's task is to measure how wide and how high is a wrinkle. And so the ratio between width and height is what they then calculate, and there's a limit to that ratio. And that is what an inspector has to do. And currently, they are doing it with hand tools. And a hand tool is a Dial gauge or it can be what they call a comp gauge. So they push it on the surface so they get the contour of this wrinkle and then with that contour they measure actually the width and the height of it. Allen Hall: It can be very difficult to detect some of these wrinkles because the laminates in these longer blades, the laminate is very thick. So if you have a wrinkle somewhere in the middle of this laminate, the surface Defect or the surface curvature change is minuscule, right? Erik Klaas: It is. And there is a limitation of our technology that I need to speak about. So we can only detect and measure those which are on the top layer. So if they go through the whole layup of layers and they are visible on the surface, we can measure them. And if they only appear in deeper layers, we can't. So you need like NDT measures,
Jeremy Heinks from CICNDT (Composite Inspection and Consulting NDT) discusses how proper NDT programs can prevent costly failures and improve blade reliability. Drawing from his extensive experience, Heinks explains the challenges of implementing NDT in both onshore and offshore wind environments, emphasizing the importance of working with qualified experts to develop comprehensive inspection. I'm your host, Allen Hall, along with my co host, Joel Saxum today we're joined by Jeremy Heinks a true veteran in the field of non destructive testing with over 25 years of experience spanning aerospace, renewables, and the space sectors. Jeremy is the owner of Composite Inspection and Consulting, where he specializes in advanced materials, testing, and inspection methods. And from inspecting rocket components at SpaceX to developing comprehensive testing programs for wind turbine blades, Jeremy brings a unique perspective on quality assurance and testing methodologies. Welcome to Uptime Spotlight, shining light on wind energy's brightest innovators. This is the Progress Powering Tomorrow. Jeremy, welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. Thanks for having me. So you're a person we've been wanting to talk to for quite a while. And I'm glad you're on the podcast because NDT comes up all the time in our discussions when we're talking to operators, when we're talking to owners, they don't know much about it, and they're not even sure if they got NDT data, if it's the right kind of data to help them, and you have a ton of experience. You've done aerospace, you worked at SpaceX, you've done all this cool NDT stuff. I want to know to start off with. What happens in the factory? What kind of NDT should be performed in the factory? And what are they trying to use it to detect? Jeremy Heinks: Yeah. In the factory, NDT has come a long way over the past 20 years or so but we start out with the basics people don't understand like visual inspection is an NDT method and making sure that, that's done in a proper manner, it's regulated. There are rules and regulations for proper visual inspection. And certifying people to that in the NDT realm, it's called VT here, Visual Technic but, uh, that's a first just doing proper visual inspection and looking for Gross defects that way. Another thing, that's another really basic one that we see in the plants is a tap test, right? And that's another one. Tap test is a regulated NDT method. And typically that doesn't, people don't know that. It gets done incorrectly. 99 percent of the time your technicians that are doing tap tests have to pass certain certifications and regulations for hearing and all these types of different things. And the same with the conditions for the area to do the tap test. It can't be a loud noisy area. You have to have, a certain amount of noise or certain, and then we get into a couple of the other basics. One is thermal testing or IR inspection. And when that's done in a plant, it's typically after the blade has been closed we've put the mold on top and we've closed up for the adhesive body to take place. And the mold is then opened after curing cycle and then pulled out of the out of the mold and set up. So typically we would do a thermal inspection there to make sure that the adhesive is curing properly.

I am so excited to bring you my friend and colleague Paul Robinson in this podcast episode to discuss the many problems with the current ways we treat and test for low thyroid or hypothyroidism. Paul also shared some of his story with us and how being undertreated for hypothyroidism basically destroyed his life. We also got into the specifics of T4, T3 and Reverse T3 to hopefully help you understand and take more control of your thyroid and health issues. And what do you do if your doctor won't help you. Please let us know if you have any questions or feedback in the comments. Paul Robinson became ill with hypothyroidism in his late twenties. Over the next thirty-plus years, Paul accumulated a wealth of knowledge on thyroid and adrenal dysfunction. His scientific background enabled him to fight through the morass of misinformation and recover his health, and help many many others. At first, Paul was put on the most common thyroid treatment - Levothyroxine (also known as Synthroid or T4). However, the majority of his symptoms remained, much like they do for many on T4-therapy. Over time he became even more ill, with both low cortisol and low thyroid symptoms. This then spurred Paul to put everything he learned on paper - writing his 3 books. Paul wrote 'The CT3M Handbook' as a companion book to 'Recovering with T3' to explain more about raising cortisol levels if needed. And Paul wrote his third book ‘The Thyroid Patient's Manual'. This book covers all types of thyroid medications (T4, T4/T3, NDT, and T3). In this episode, Kylee and Zoë dive into the evolving conversation around Orthorexia—a term for an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating. We explore the impact of societal norms, social media, and misinformation on people's relationship with food, particularly athletes. As more people seek to "clean up" their diets, we're seeing how rigid rules and an obsession with food purity can disrupt lives. We'll unpack how Orthorexia isn't officially recognized in the DSM but still significantly impacts mental and physical health, drawing from professional insights and research. We also chat through how athletes and active folks can work towards a more balanced approach to nutrition, and avoid the pitfalls of over-restriction. References Conviser JH, Fisher SD, McColley SA. T2 thyroid hormone, also known as 3,5 diiodo-l-thyronine, is gaining a lot of attention among thyroid patients, and for good reason. As far as thyroid hormones are concerned, T2 plays a major role in regulating metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, and heat production, making it the ideal treatment if you are suffering from hypothyroid-related weight gain as well as high cholesterol. For this reason, many thyroid patients are wondering if it's right for them and they've been asking a lot of questions: Is T2 thyroid hormone safe? What are the side effects? And should I try it? Well, this video is going to shed light on all of those. First, we have no reason to suspect that T2 thyroid hormone is harmful because thyroid patients have been using it for over 70 years. This is because T2 is found in small amounts in NDT thyroid medications like Armour thyroid. What about side effects? Based on the over 10,000 thyroid patients who have used my T2 supplement, here's what I've found: Roughly 70-75% see some benefit when taking it. Roughly 5-10% see no discernable benefit and roughly 10-15% of patients see some minor negative side effect when taking it. So, should you give T2 a try? That depends on how you are feeling. If you are a thyroid patient who is currently feeling lousy despite taking your thyroid medication every day then, yeah, giving it a try may be a good idea. In addition, if you are a thyroid patient suffering from the inability to lose weight then that's another reason to consider giving it a try. Let me dive into one of the most commonly asked questions I get: What supplements and routines interfere with thyroid medication? I'll bring it all to the table to make it crystal clear for you. Timing your thyroid medication with food, coffee, and supplements can be confusing, but trust me, it's crucial for your health. In this episode, I break it all down – from the nitty-gritty of taking T4-only medications to the subtle differences in using T3, NDT, and combinations. And I'm not stopping there. We're talking specifics like why you need to wait an hour before consuming anything and which supplements you absolutely need to avoid around your dosing times. I'll break out every little trick you can take to get the most out of your thyroid medication, from the morning routine to those mid-day doses. And if you're struggling despite doing it all "right," I've got some advanced hacks for you, too. We know how important it is to spread the word about the NDT industry, and one of the pillars of ASNT's Strategic Plan is to “advance the field of nondestructive testing by being an effective advocate.” ASNT has started many new initiatives to further this goal, and in this episode, I spoke with Garra Liming, who will be ASNT's director of public relations and government affairs beginning on July 1. This episode is part one of a larger discussion about the many ways we can all advocate for the NDT industry, and in part two I'll be talking to ASNT members and volunteers who have found effective ways to be advocates in their own communities. Millions of prescriptions of thyroid medication will be filled this year and the vast majority of them will be for levothyroxine. Of those millions, only about 10% or so will go to a class of thyroid medication called natural desiccated thyroid. Despite being only 10% of all prescriptions, thyroid patients have a clear preference for it. Not only does it help with weight loss, but it also can help better control thyroid symptoms based on surveys of thyroid patients. There's only one problem: Doctors don't like to prescribe it. Unfortunately, they are under the impression that NDT is an inferior medication to levothyroxine which is why today, I'm busting these NDT myths. Here they are, in no particular order: 1. Claim #1: Taking NDT Will Cause Bone Loss & Heart Problems Long-term studies show this isn't true PROVIDED you are not taking more than you need. 2. Claim #2: Newer Synthetic Medications Are More Effective The idea here is that NDT may cause side effects because of its T3 content. This may happen, but it's also the reason that people prefer NDT... because it works. 3. Claim #3: NDT is Not FDA-Approved This is true but irrelevant. NDT has been use since 1890 so it was grandfathered into the FDAs newer requirements. 4. Claim #4: NDT is Old-Fashioned This isn't true either as all thyroid medications contain the same bio-identical thyroid hormones. The same T4 that is found in levothyroxine is also found in NDT. 5. Claim #5: Taking NDT Will Cause Mad Cow Disease NDT comes from pigs (not cows), and there's never been a reported case of Mad Cow disease in the US. 6. Claim #6: Taking NDT Will Increase Thyroid Antibodies This is theoretical and may be a problem for a rare subset of people, but not enough to warrant that everyone avoids it. Claim #7: NDT Isn't A Real Medication Because it Can Be Purchased Over The Counter NDT is not the same thing as over-the-counter thyroid glandulars which is what this claim confuses. I'm your host, Allen Hall, along with my co host, Joel Saxum. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Laurent Zimmerli, Vice President of Customer Experience at Voliro. And Voliro is a pioneering Swiss company applying drones and robotics to transform inspection and maintenance processes. Founded in 2016 out of ETH Zurich's Autonomous Systems Lab, Voliro has quickly become a leader in industrial inspections and non destructive. Testing their flagship offering is the Voliro T drone known for its stability and reliability in confined spaces. Thanks to its omni directional control. We're all welcome to the program. Laurent Zimmerli: Thanks Allen. Thanks for having me. It's great to be on the show today. Joel Saxum: We had this conversation. Okay. We're fresh off of OMS and blades and people talking. Lightning protection has been. Huge. Everybody's talking about it. Lightning protectionist. Weather Guard lightning tech, that's what we do, right? We're talking StrikeTape to people all the time. The first thing we ask them is, when was the last time you got your lightning protection systems tested? And a lot of times we get this glassy eyed look. Do we do that? They look at someone else and pull their phone out Do we do that? This is, this, and this is one of the reasons we want to talk to you. We want to touch on Voliro and all of the offerings you guys offer, because I know you're working on NDT things. You're working on a lot of cool stuff, because you've solved a base root problem. So let's jump into that. The base root problem of flying drones and being in contact with surfaces. Laurent Zimmerli: Yeah, that's exactly, that's actually how it started back in 2016 at ETH Zurich as a research project. So we definitely didn't think about testing lightning protection systems of wind turn turbines back then, because it was mainly about what you just explained. It was how can we create a drone that can establish contact in a stable and controlled way with a surface or an object? If you're looking at a, like a conventional multi copter drone, whenever it moves sideways or forwards or backwards, the whole drone tilts in the direction of the movement. That's basically how it works. The, like the back prop spin, spin harder and then it tilts and then it moves, which completely, which is the perfect way of moving. That's how a helicopter works as well, right? Now, if you're in motion it's not a problem in terms of stability because you're in motion. However. If you want to push against the surface, or if you want to apply force against an object, the vehicle will not move. And if it tilts, it becomes unstable. And at some point, if you push too hard, it just basically falls over. Joel Saxum: It'll flip over. Laurent Zimmerli: Yeah, yeah. So basically the question back then is,

Things that have been in-service for a while are starting to show their age, and in some cases, failing altogether. Those of us in the nondestructive testing industry know there's a problem, but how can we make sure our inspectors are ready for it—and how can we make sure other industries, and the public, know how important NDT really is?In this episode, two of the directors currently serving on ASNT's Board, Anita Gregorian and Larry Culbertson, Jr., walk us through the challenges facing in-service assets and get us thinking about the next steps.
