After winning the girls 115-pound weight class last weekend at the state wrestling tournament, Brunswick High freshman Kate Virgilio is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. And she talks about the legacy she'd like the leave and the opportunity she hopes to create for other girls in wrestling across the county. About the Guest(s): Donny Ott is a seasoned basketball coach with a rich history of success across various high schools in Texas. Ott has a notable coaching background, including a transition from coaching boys to girls' basketball, and has led teams to multiple state championships. He has been the head coach at Cedar Park, where he achieved exceptional success with two state titles, and Summer Creek, where he reached the state semifinals. Currently, Ott is at Alito, where he continues to build a promising basketball program while prioritizing his family's happiness and well-being. Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of "It's Just Different Podcast," host Ashley Roberts sits down with accomplished basketball coach Donny Ott to discuss the evolving dynamics of high school basketball and the lessons learned from his successful coaching journey. With a focus on building a winning culture, Ott shares his insights into adapting coaching strategies, managing player-parent relationships, and fostering buy-in from athletes and families. As the game progresses, Ott offers his thoughts on potential changes like the introduction of a shot clock and transfer rules. Ott provides valuable perspectives on adjusting to a more perimeter-focused game in high school basketball while maintaining traditional inside-out play. Highlighting the importance of strong coach-parent communication, he emphasizes never meeting with players without their parents to ensure clarity and mutual understanding. Ott stresses the significance of consistency in expectations and the impact of a supportive environment on a team's success. The episode is rich in insights, making it a must-listen for coaches, parents, and anyone involved in high school sports. Key Takeaways: The shift toward a faster-paced, more perimeter-focused game in high school basketball presents both challenges and opportunities for coaches. Consistent expectations and communication, particularly with parents, are crucial for fostering team buy-in and success. Adversity is a natural part of sports, and not running from challenges can lead to growth both for athletes and their programs. The introduction of a shot clock could significantly impact the game, potentially reducing the ability to stall, as experienced in Ott's overtime game against Duncanville. Building a culture of support from parents and assistant coaches can help teams succeed and thrive in a competitive sports environment. Allie Coyle is the head coach of the Montgomery Blair Boys Soccer Varsity team. Over the last 3 years as the head coach of the Varsity Boys Soccer, she has led the team to numerous titles including: 2x County Division Champions (2022, 2023), 2x Maryland 4A Region Champions (2022, 2024), Maryland 4A Semifinalist (2022), and, most recently, Maryland 4A State Champions (2024). Through numerous injuries as an athlete that required multiple surgeries, she learned that it doesn't matter how bad you get knocked down, what matters is how you get up. She knew her teammates needed her, and she needed them. While working as a teacher as an adult, a group of boys lost their coach mid-season and approached her to help. By saying yes and showing up for them, they began to show up for each other. Allie instilled her refusal to take no for an answer coupled with a culture a positivity. The outcome is remarkable. Coyle became the first female of a boys' soccer team to win the State Championship in the state of Maryland. This fall she not only brought in the coveted trophy but earned the title of Maryland's Large Public High School Coach of the Year by the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer, as well as the Boys Soccer Coach of the Year from the Washington Post's All Met. @coach.coyle, @montblairsoccer
Cyberstalking! Inappropriate office decor! Puking! The Virgin Mary! Somehow, by the grace of God (or in spite of it) the ladies are bringing ALL of this and more this week. First, Kelley honors her gamer side by highlighting Carol Kantor, one of the early thought leaders in the video game industry! Then, Emily travels across the Mississippi to that dark shadowy place, Wisconsin, to tell the story of Belgian immigrant Adele Brise. While walking through the woods, Adele encountered a mysterious woman in white who would change her life, her small Wisconsin town, and (perhaps) save hundreds of lives. Today on the podcast is Manny Putz! Manny is a senior in Wisconsin who just yesterday won his third consecutive state title, becoming only the third person in his division to three-peat in the history of Wisconsin State Cross Country History. According to DyeStat, Manny is also ranked as the third best individual male in the U.S, and going into NXR and NXN over these next few weeks, he is the #1 returner, having finished 5th at the meet last year. Manny is also the Wisconsin 1600 and 3200 State Champion. He holds PRs of 4:12 for 1600, 8:53 for 3200, and is committed to run at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, in 2025. Today, Manny and I talk all about the experience and emotions of winning back-to-back-to-back state titles, his thoughts on how to effectively run hills in cross country, being one of the favorites going into NXN this year, why he thinks high school rankings are a double-edged sword, and much more. If you haven't already, please consider giving this podcast a follow and a five-star review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. That goes a long way in supporting the growth of this podcast so we can inspire more people in the world of running and in that process grow this great sport that we all know and love.
