First Responder stories from the people who lived them. Join us for a ride along!
As with many of the other episodes in this series, I had Jason in mind when I came up with this show in the first place. Sergeant Major Jason Beighley, (pronounced Beef-Lee) US Army (Retired), is quite possibly the most un-Sergeant Major Sergeant Major I have ever met. He's a 25-year veteran of the US Army's Tier-1 "Unit" that we've never formally named in almost eight years of conversation between us. He's forgotten more about tactical operations than I'll ever learn, and I'm lucky to call him my friend. He joined me, alongside co-host now-Deputy Shannon, as well as new guests Special Agent Rollie and Detective Jack to talk about the cruel mistress that is special operations and to be the first fully-named guest on The Doored-Up Podcast. Please give him a warm welcome, and check out his website at http://www.skeletonkeytactical.com Thanks again for all your support, stay safe, stay frosty! This is the first in what I foresee as a series of solo episodes where I talked about my values system while out on a ruck. Please give some feedback and let me know what you think about it! This is a continuation of our episode with Sgt. Brad, so go back and start at Episode 16 (Part One) if you're lost. We continued with talk about "punching the clown," more coitus interruptus stories, sketchy strip joints, lake shenanigans, "What's your number?", more poop stories (like...... A LOT MORE.... I truly do apologize), trusting your instincts, run-ins with Brad's resident crazy guy, crash stories and lastly, jurisdictional woes, and more. Welcome back for Episode 16, One Riot, One Ranger - Part One (with Sergeant Brad). Brad sat down with Jake, Shannon, and myself to tell some great stories. Brad is a true lawman, working areas few patrol, often without backup in the wildlands of the rural mountain West. We talked traffic control vs. proactive enforcement, getting caught speeding, polygraphs, deception vs. fabrication, radio etiquette, living with spirits, poop stories, working the lake, crashing patrol vehicles and pursuits, and more. Stay tuned for Part Two of this episode next week! This week's special intro theme music is "Return to No Man's Land" by Headlund, with a reading of the poem "Lawman" by Jon Gutmacher. First off, I want to apologize for my absence, which is explained at length throughout this episode! Detective Shannon and I sat down and talked about Disney vacation planning, hobbies, the dreaded Wintertime Slump, our age catching up to us, attending the NTOA Conference, working big cases, employee/LE discounts, celebrity sightings, recent high-profile cases, and judicial system woes. This episode features my greatest quote ever (in my opinion). This episode is dedicated to our friend, Danny. We take a deep dive into mental health and talk about how the burnout is real. If you need to talk, don't ever hesitate to reach out to me. Thanks again for all your support, stay safe, stay frosty! This episode I talked with my friend, Deputy Austin. Austin is a fellow OIF veteran and is a ten-year Sheriff's Deputy in a small rural county. The challenges he faces are no different than big-city cops, but the difference is he usually faces them alone, with very little backup. Buckle up and enjoy the ride! This month I sat down again with Snake and Shannon and we were, well.... distracted! We talked about everything except for the basis of the show, and it was great! I'm back! This was originally the first episode I planned to record, but I think this is the right time for it. This is a solo episode, where I talk about all things mindset as I see them. Stay tuned for more episodes on the way! Thanks again for all your support, stay safe, stay frosty! This show is for entertainment purposes only, and does not reflect the official viewpoint of any government entity. Produced, mastered and mixed by your host, Deputy D. Snake Eater - Part 2 This is the conclusion to the episode we did with my surrogate brother, Snake. If you haven't listened to Episode 10, start there. We talked mandatory Army "fun," mortars, gun-nerd stuff, tiger stripes and sewing machines, "How many combat drops?", a few Baghdad stories, differences in lavatory facilities among developed countries and breaking international ice (everybody poops!), leadership and command ineptitude, and a lot more! Episode 10 - Snake Eater - Part 1 This week I sat down with guest-host Shannon and our guest, "Snake." Snake and I have been friends since we were teenagers, and he is more like a brother to me than anything else. He's also a former law-enforcement officer, and an active operational member of the United States Army Special Forces community. We sat down and talked about preparing for the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) course, Airborne School, jumping out of airplanes, "sky sharking," Small Unit Tactics, killing Baghdad rats, Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) training, learning a new language, and defying the uniform standard. This is Part 1 of a two-part episode with Snake, so stay tuned for Part 2 in the next week or so. I will no longer be doing weekly releases, as my schedule doesn't support the short turnaround. Don't worry, I'm not going to make you wait as long as Dan Carlin, but the episodes won't be on a weekly clock any more. This week I'm back with Part Two of the interview I did with Shawn, Jason, Blair and Johnny recounting our time in Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 - 2005. If you haven't listened to Episode 8 (Part One), go back and listen there first or this won't make any sense! In this episode, we talk about dabbling in legalized amphetamines, the Third World exchange rate, VBIED attacks, Grand Theft Auto on the streets of Baghdad, borrowed valor and tall tales, the burning of a sacred cow, and more! If you enjoyed these two episodes, stay tuned, there will be many more just like this! Thanks again for all your support, stay safe, stay frosty! The Boys in Baghdad - Part One This week, I doored up with some of my oldest friends from my old unit to talk about my first deployment to Iraq in 2004. Episode 7 This week I doored up with Dispatcher Erin, and was joined by my guest host, Officer Jake. I hope you all enjoy my most heavily "bleeped" episode yet! We talked all things dispatch including training new dispatchers, wrangling needy officers, antiquated systems, good calls and bad calls and more - All while learning more about Jake's bodily functions than we ever wanted to..... again. Episode 6 - Nine Twelver First off, let me apologize for last week's lack of a fresh episode! Snowmageddon 2021 got the best of the TDUP crew! This week, I sat down by myself to talk about my enlistment story from my time in the military and go over some audio from an interview I did a few years ago for a documentary about my unit's deployment to Iraq. This is just a taste of things to come as far as this type of content goes. Next I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your support, keep spreading the word! Episode 5 - Unfinished Business This week I doored up with Officer Tony. Tony is a former detective, motor cop, and a fellow SWAT guy. We talked 2020 versus Law Enforcement, "rolling coal," motor school, foot pursuits, policing the Carnival Crowd and frustrations with today's youth, misplacing important equipment, responding to mental health crisis calls, flashlight technology, happiness in a Member's Only jacket, the reemerging popularity of 80's toys, and everything in between. The episode is so aptly named because Tony will be coming back to talk more memorable capers soon. Enjoy! Episode 4 - The Rules of The Game This week, I doored up with Officer Jake, and co-host from Ep. 1, Detective Shannon. Officer Jake is a multi-branch military veteran, former EMT, a hyper-proactive copper, and a great guy to have around. We talked about the differences between military branches, smart use of the GI Bill, separation regret, using "your time," navigating the court system, mental health, initiating shit-shows, officer involved shootings, Jake's significant lack of hydration, proactivity and knowing your job, and much more. In keeping with a new decision, the episode's guest gets to pick the name of the episode, so please enjoy, and share with your friends! Episode 3 - Fight Like a Girl For this week's episode, I doored up with two of the most thoughtful, vibrant and capable cops I've had the pleasure to work with throughout my career - and they both happen to be badass women! Come along while I door up with Kate and Lisa! We talk mental health buddy-checks, the frustrations of a new investigator, bogus theft reports filed by cops, the fine art of "Habeus Grabus," tactical restroom considerations, and more! Episode 2 - Walking the Floor We're doored-up today with Deputy "Scott," who brings along over 20-years experience in corrections and detention in what I feel will be our funniest episode for some time. We talk shakedowns, fights over fish sammiches, the going rate for chocolate chip cookies "on the inside," blue-on-blue assaults with confections and office supplies, mindset, respect, and all things "jailer." All while fishing for sponsors! You won't want to miss this one. Produced, mastered and mixed by your host, Deputy D. Our intro/outro music is "In The Land of Rhinoplasty" by The Jingle Punks.
