Send us a textThe most downloaded conversation of the year returns for a reason: it's the raw, practical guide first responders and their families keep asking for. We sit with Sgt. Michael Sugrue—Air Force security forces veteran, Walnut Creek Police sergeant, and author of Relentless Courage—to talk about the weight of hundreds of traumatic calls, how a 2012 shooting upended his life, and the exact steps that pulled him back from the edge.Michael breaks down why suicide remains the top threat for police, fire, EMS, and dispatch: a culture that prizes invincibility, training that skips mental readiness, and an identity so fused to the job that retirement can feel like free fall. He explains how “silent” suicides hide in line‑of‑duty risks, why official counts underreport the crisis, and what leadership must do to turn the tide. We go deep on solutions: culturally competent therapy, confidential peer lines, retreats like West Coast Post‑Trauma Retreat and Save A Warrior, and daily practices—meditation, gratitude, strength work, honest conversations—that sustain real resilience. We also challenge common myths. Therapy doesn't take your gun; it gives you your life back. EMDR helps many but not all; the real power is a personalized toolkit. Early intervention keeps stress acute and treatable; waiting turns injuries into entrenched patterns that cost careers and families. Michael's book, co‑authored with Dr. Shauna Springer, bridges the gap between gut‑level storytelling and clear psychology, giving responders and loved ones a shared language to start hard conversations and map a path forward. If you serve—or love someone who does—this is a roadmap to stay in the fight without losing yourself. Hit play, share it with a partner or teammate, and let's normalize help as a standard of care. Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth continue their conversation with IU historian Bill Murphy, shifting from football glory to basketball history. This installment dives deep into the Branch McCracken era, revealing why Bill's favorite IU coach isn't who most fans would expect.Branch McCracken: The SheriffBill makes his case for Branch McCracken over Bob Knight, drawing fascinating parallels between the two legendary coaches. Branch coached 24 years (1938-1965, minus three years serving in WWII), finishing first or second in the Big Ten in 12 of those seasons with two national titles. Knight coached 29 years, finishing first or second in 16 seasons with three titles. Bill argues that had NCAA tournament rules been different, Branch might have won in 1960 when IU beat Ohio State by 16 in Bloomington after their last 12-game win streak, while Knight's 1987 title came when IU tied for the Big Ten title with three other teams. Bill recounts meeting Branch as an eighth grader in New Albany, a handshake he didn't want to wash for a week, and describes a six-foot-four presence who earned nicknames like "The Sheriff" and "The Bear" while drinking coffee at every shop on the Bloomington square to keep tabs on his players. The Van Arsdale Twins' Supernatural SymmetryThe conversation turns to Tom and Dick Van Arsdale, whose three-year careers produced jaw-dropping statistical similarities:Separated by just 12 points over 72 games (1,252 to 1,240)Only 10 rebounds apart (729 to 719)Both hit exactly 15 field goals in their career-high game against Notre DameConstantly pranked Branch by wearing mismatched socks after he tried to distinguish them by colorOfficials sometimes let the wrong twin shoot free throws because they couldn't tell them apartMike shares stories from his father, who lived in the SAE house with the twins and John McGlocklin—three of IU's seven all-time NBA All-Stars living in the same room.Chesty Chips and Television HistoryBill reveals how IU became the first university to televise basketball games in 1950 when radio announcer Paul Lennon convinced a Terre Haute potato chip company to sponsor games for $1,500 each. After one broadcast, Chesty Potato Chips went from one shift to three and sold out across the region, causing the price to jump to $5,000 per game the next year.Branch's BoysBill shares his favorite McCracken moments—from officials threatening a technical for every step back to the bench (so players carried him), to another ref getting him to sit down by saying "your fly is open," to Branch's simple philosophy: if he could only win one game all year, it would be against Purdue. That hatred paid off in 1940 when IU swept Purdue but finished second in the Big Ten, yet still received the NCAA tournament invitation over the conference champs. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

    Duane Sheriff Ministries - Feed

What does it really mean to live a godly life in an increasingly ungodly world? As the world grows darker, some churches are drifting from biblical truth. In the message "Godliness," Duane Sheriff explores the mystery of godliness, teaching that true godly living flows from the person and finished work of Jesus Christ—His incarnation, death, resurrection, and exaltation.Godliness is not produced by rules, self-effort, or religious arguments, but by the transforming power of grace. There is a clear distinction between a powerless form of godliness and the life-changing power found in the gospel. Godliness is not about perfection—it is about transformation. When the mystery of the gospel grips our hearts, it empowers us to rise, walk in the light, and live in a way that reflects Christ to a watching world. It awakens a deep hunger to please God and bless others, bringing transformation not only to our own lives but to those around us.

Send him home — with his badge, his gun, and his authority untouched. Twenty-four hours later, Judge Kevin Mullins was shot nine times in his own chambers. In this deep-dive, retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer exposes the structural failures that allowed this to happen. Kentucky has no red flag law. An elected sheriff cannot be suspended by subordinates. There was no mechanism to disarm him — even as multiple people recognized he was in crisis. We examine the civil lawsuit accusing sheriff's office employees of failing to warn Judge Mullins, and their defense that Kentucky law imposed no duty to act. Is that legally sound? Mickey Stines just admitted in court filings that he shot and killed Judge Kevin Mullins. Nine bullets. Seven of them fired while the judge was already on the ground. It's all on video. But now Stines is claiming he "had no control" over his actions—and his defense is pointing to a rare neurological disease caused by bug bites as part of the explanation. For over a year, no one could explain why a Kentucky sheriff walked into a judge's chambers and executed a man he'd worked with for decades. They'd eaten lunch together that same day. Stines used to be Mullins' bailiff. And then, after a seven-minute private conversation, Stines locked the door and opened fire. Now court documents reveal what was happening to Stines in the days before the shooting. He'd lost 40 pounds in two weeks. He was making phone calls to dead relatives. He told staff that shadowy forces were coming to kill his wife and daughter. He made someone put a bulletproof vest on his wife. His own employees believed he was in a psychosis. An attorney warned the judge directly that Stines was "losing it." The local police chief said he'd "lost his mind." But here's the problem: the day before the shooting, Stines saw a doctor. And according to medical records, he denied experiencing any psychosis or homicidal thoughts. The doctor diagnosed "acute stress reaction" and sent him home. Twenty-four hours later, Kevin Mullins was dead. Now Stines is building an insanity defense that includes claims of California encephalitis—a tick-borne illness that can cause confusion and aggression. Whether that's a legitimate diagnosis or a legal strategy remains to be seen. What's clear is that this case is about to get a lot more complicated. #MickeyStines #JudgeKevinMullins #Letcher County #KentuckySheriff #CourthouseShooting #TrueCrime #InsanityDefense #CaliforniaEncephalitis #TrueCrime2025 #JusticeForMullins Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A Kentucky sheriff shot and killed a judge inside his own courthouse chambers — and according to court documents, the warning signs were everywhere. Witnesses say Mickey Stines hadn't slept in days. He'd lost a massive amount of weight. He was convinced unnamed people were going to kill his wife and daughter. He woke his wife up at night to whisper because he believed their home was bugged. And on the day of the shooting, he reportedly tried calling his grandmother — who had been dead for three years. Coworkers saw it. An attorney saw it.  The local police chief said "that son of a bitch has lost his mind." His friends even took him to the doctor the day before. And still, nobody stopped what was coming. In this segment, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott breaks down what these behaviors actually mean clinically — what paranoid psychosis looks like, why people miss or dismiss the warning signs, and what Stines' insanity defense might actually hold up to. We're not here to excuse what happened. We're here to understand it. Because this case is a brutal lesson in what happens when someone falls apart in plain sight and no one knows what to do about it. #MickeyStines #JudgeKevinMullins #TrueCrime #KentuckySheriff #CourthouseShooting #MentalHealthCrisis #InsanityDefense #WarningSigns #Psychosis #ShavaunScott Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Three days before Sheriff Mickey Stines allegedly walked into Judge Kevin Mullins' chambers and shot him nine times, an attorney contacted the Kentucky Bar Association asking what he could do to intervene. He'd already warned Mullins directly. Told him Stines was "losing it." The local police chief had seen enough to say Stines had "lost his mind." Staff inside the sheriff's office watched their boss make phone calls to relatives who had been dead for years. They got him to a doctor. The doctor sent him home with a diagnosis of "acute stress reaction." Twenty-four hours later, Kevin Mullins was dead. This isn't a story about people who didn't care. It's a story about people who saw a crisis developing, took action within the limits of what they could actually do, and discovered those limits weren't anywhere close to enough. Kentucky has no red flag law. Involuntary commitment requires proof of imminent danger — not paranoid delusions, not rapid weight loss, not bizarre behavior. And when the person in crisis is an elected sheriff, nobody has the authority to suspend him, disarm him, or override his denials. Court documents exposed this week reveal just how many people recognized something catastrophic was happening — and how the systems we've built gave them almost no power to stop it. The widow's civil lawsuit now asks whether three sheriff's office employees should be held liable for failing to warn Judge Mullins. Their defense: Kentucky law imposed no duty to warn or protect. Everyone did something. It wasn't enough. And the gap between "someone should do something" and anyone having the power to actually do it is where Kevin Mullins died. #MickeyStines #JudgeMullins #TrueCrime #KentuckySheriff #CourthouseShooting #MentalHealthCrisis #RedFlagLaws #TrueCrimeNews #SystemicFailure Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
