It's draft day on What's Eric Eating! Eric, Sarah Dowling of Baso, Abbas Dhanani of Burger Bodega, Raffi Nasr of Craft Pita, and Chelsea Thomas are drafting The Ultimate Chain Restaurant line up on today's edition of the podcast. First though, what is the definition of a chain restaurant? For podcast drafting purposes, The Ultimate Chain Restaurant Draft defines a chain restaurant as having at least 20 locations in at least five states. For example, this would exclude a place like Steak 48 (only has 8 locations), but does include Nobu (locations on 5 continents). The Chain Restaurant categories our drafters will drafting in are; Breakfast, Burgers, Fast Casual, Ice Cream Steakhouse, and a Wild Card.  The winner will be announced on the next episode of the podcast as selected by special judge, so stayed tuned to your podcast feeds to find out who the winner of the first ever Ultimate Chain Restaurant Draft is.  The Draft RulesRule 1: For burgers, you can pick any restaurant that serves a burger, it doesn't have to be a dedicated burger concept but no selections from a fast food concept. Rule 2: Steakhouses are restaurants with at least 6 different a la carte steaks on the menu that cook orders to temperature.Rule 3: All 6 selections must be from different places for each drafter. Once a restaurant has been selected for any category, it's off the board for all other categories/drafters. Rule 4: Snake draft format. Hello! My name is Marc Allie. I'm a teacher, blogger, author, and pretty much the biggest nerd you'll ever meet. As a longtime Video Store Podcast listener, I am thrilled to be a member of the staff. For our staff picks this week, I've got four recommendations from the varied career of Kurt Russell.Escape from New York (1981)Escape from New York is the film that cemented Kurt Russell's transition into a motion picture powerhouse. The film was directed by John Carpenter and was written by Carpenter and Nick Castle. The movie has a low budget, but it became a cult classic over time. Kurt Russell plays Snake Plisskin, a hardened but cool anti-hero that became an action icon.Used Cars (1980)Used Cars is a lesser known film. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis, written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale, and produced by Steven Spielberg, so it's got quite a pedigree behind it. The movie, as you might expect, is about used cars. Two rival used car dealerships sit right across the highway from each other. Rudy Russo, Kurt Russell's character, works at the less reputable of the two car lots. His performance as a slick used car salesman shows off his comedic chops.Soldier (1998) Soldier was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. Kurt Russell plays the “Soldier” of the title. His name is Todd 3465. That's right, he doesn't have a last name, only a number. Todd has been raised from birth to be an emotionless soldier. Todd is the best of the best, but when the “newer model” of soldier comes along, he's tossed out with the trash and has to make a new life for himself. Russell relies on his physical prowess as well as expressions and body language in this nearly wordless role.Executive Decision (1996)The last movie on our recommendations list is Executive Decision, an action thriller directed by Stuart Bird. The film mixes military action, espionage, and suspense to great effect. It's one of the better “Die Hard on an airplane” movies of the 1990s. Kurt Russell plays an intelligence analyst who is thrust into an impossible situation: board a plane filled with terrorists while it's already in the air.Thanks for coming into the store today. Producers of mokuhanga prints who also teach art at the academic level have always intrigued me. The balance between the solitary work of a printmaker and the responsibilities of teaching a wide range of artistic disciplines must be both complex and, at times, challenging. It raises questions such as: How much of my own creative journey can I pursue while also dedicating myself to students who look to me for guidance as both an artist and a teacher? They were conceived by mokuhanga printmaker Richard Steiner. Tōsai is the name given to Richard by his teacher. More info, here.    Katie Baldwin -  is a contemporary mokuhanga printmaker, illustrator, book maker, and artist based in Huntsville, Alabama.  Her work can be found, here. Her interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here.    April, woodblock (2007) 17" x 25"   Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - born in Edo, Hiroshige is famous for his landscape series of that burgeoning city. The most famous series being, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-1859), and the landcape series, Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō (1833-1834). His work highlights bokashi, and bright colours. More info about his work can be found, here.    Returning Sails at Otoro from Eight Superb Views of Kanazawa (mid-1830's) 11.6 cm × 17 cm   Ralph Kiggell (1960-2022) -  was one of the most important mokuhanga practitioners. Originally from England, Ralph lived and worked in Thailand. Ralph pushed the boundaries of mokuhanga with extremely large pieces, jigsaw carving, and by using fantastic colour. He also worked with the International Mokuhanga Conference to promote mokuhanga around the world. He will be greatly missed. Ralph's work can be found, here. Giant Chiamera II (2021) ed. of 10, 127 cm  × 90 cm    Hara Shobo - is a gallery with locations in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan. They specialize in ukiyo-e and shin hanga. More info, here.    Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was a renowned Japanese woodblock printmaker and one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e tradition. He is best known for his dramatic and emotionally intense imagery, particularly in series like One Hundred Aspects of the Moon and Thirty-Six Ghosts. Working during a time of cultural upheaval in the Meiji period, Yoshitoshi blended traditional techniques with modern themes, Yoshitoshi is famous as a print designer for his expressive linework, rich colour, and innovations in print design during this period of Japanese history.   Eight Battles of the Modern Era (近世八戦争, 1868-1869) 26cm×36cm   shōmen-zuri (正面摺) - "front burnishing," is a deluxe mokuhanga technique used to create black-on-black pattern which creates a contrast. Unlike standard printing, where pigment is rubbed from the back of the paper into the fibers, shōmen-zuri applies heavy friction directly to the front face of a dried, printed sheet—often over a carved relief block—using a hard burnishing tool like a polished boar's tusk or agate. The intense pressure compresses and polishes the ink, producing a glossy, light-reflective pattern against a matte background that beautifully mimics silk damask, lacquered armor, or fine textiles as the print catches the light.   Gotō Hidehiko - is a master baren maker and printmaker based in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. More into at the  Baren Kikuhide website.     Distance of Night (1991) 55 cm × 40.5 cm   Sarah Brayer - is a visual artist who is based in Kyoto, Japan. Her works are predominantly poured Japanese paper (washi). Sarah was the first Western artist to work at the Taki paper mill in Echizen. This is where she currently make her paperworks. Sarah have worked continuously in Echizen since 1986 as the only Western artist to do so. Sarah Brayer has also produced mokuhanga in her career. More information can be found, here. Before midnight, the tribal radio station KTNN – known in these parts as the “Voice of the Navajo Nation” – called the 16-candidate race. Here is host “Navajo Bob” Sandoval reading the unofficial score from the 110 polling places. “Here we go, Justin Jones – 15,039. Crystalyne Curley – 8,424. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) makes remarks regarding her bill that passed out of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on July 17 2026. U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) announced last week that her bill allowing five Alaska Native communities in Southeast Alaska to receive land entitlements passed out of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The legislation, called The Alaska Native Landless Equity Act, would allow Petersburg, Wrangell, Haines, Ketchikan, and Tenakee to form Alaska Native corporations and each receive about 23,000 acres of federal land, as KFSK's Baiz Hoen reports. Those communities were excluded from the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) when it became law over 50 years ago. ANCSA transferred 44 million acres of land to more than 200 regional, village, and urban corporations to resolve land claims throughout Alaska. The Landless movement is not without controversy. ANCSA mandated the newly recognized Native corporations to make a profit. Because of this, some who oppose Sen. Murkowski's bill argue that it would privatize 115,000 acres of land in the Tongass National Forest. Murkowski spoke directly to the opposition in her committee remarks last week. She addressed concerns about environmental conservation, but said “this should not be the controversial measure it has historically been viewed as.” “There are no better stewards of our Alaska lands than the people who have lived on them for thousands of years.” The Alaska delegation has been introducing landless legislation since the early 1990s without success. In 2023, a landless bill introduced by Murkowski cleared committee for the first time. Murkowski also noted during remarks that a companion measure by U.S. Rep. Nick Begich (R-AK) passed in the House of Representatives last month — with no recorded opposition. Rep. Begich's bill is the first Landless bill to clear the House. “ And I think there’s good reason for that because it comes back to the inequity that we have seen, uh, and in an effort to do right by the Alaska Native peoples who were excluded so many decades ago.” Murkowski's legislation now heads to the Senate floor for consideration. Fort Harney in Oregon in 1872. On this day in 1880, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed an executive order canceling Oregon’s Fort Harney Military Reservation and placing those lands under the existing Malheur Indian Reservation. The order expanded the reservation established in 1872 for the Northern Paiute and Snake peoples as federal policies continued reshaping Native homelands. Following suicide attempt #1.I was driving after dark. Which I wasn't supposed to do… new family rule.See, I'd damaged our car the week before, making a hasty turn into our driveway near Jumping Deer Road in Katonah. Hit the damn stone wall on the way in.This was Westchester County, NY. Local code only allowed a nano break between the 18th-Century stones guarding our yard. Colonial heritage or something… masking slave labor.I'm in the doghouse. With parents already skeptical about letting me go to college. Not “mature” enough.Yet, when the hood and fender are finally fixed? They drop me off on a muggy, hazy June night. Out in the boonies at the old Amawak Service Center on Route 202.“Pick it up and bring it home. No side stops.” Then they instruct me, “Be… careful.” Rolling their collective 4 eyes.I pull out, then wait. The light's gotta change at the 4-lane intersection with Route 35 before I can head home.The light turns green. I go into a weird space in my head. There's… there's some reason I shouldn't turn left… yet… But I watch myself shrug, flick my signal switch, and turn. Right into two lanes of accelerating traffic coming right at me.Don't remember much more. Just the red, don't-turn-yet-idiot arrow. Staring at me brightly… through the windshield that used to be there.I survived. That classic, white 1965 Mustang… didn't. Barely street legal, 271-horse V8 under the hood. Maybe the most collectible American car of all time.A hand-me-down gift to our family from my father's father. Who bragged, “I had to jew the dealer down from 5 grand,” back when he bought it new in '65. A lot of money then.Um, things got tense at home.“You are responsible for your own actions. You are the cause here.”Parental meeting time.“Uh, I don't know what happened.” I couldn't stand these “meetings.” So many in my childhood. This was maybe the worst of all.“I don't know. It… it... just happened.”Making my parents even more furious. These were avid Ayn Rand readers. And my grandfather? He slept beside an orderly nightstand. Mein Kampf tucked tightly in its tidy drawer. My dead father's voice echoes coldly in my mind still. “You are responsible for your own actions. You are the cause here.” But, I stumble on. Making things worse… in my way.“Something's wrong. I don't know what. I'm having horrible visions. Hitting people with the car as I drive by. Hitting their bodies… bones…” I trail off. Into stony silence, I say, “And now something weird happened. I think… I think… maybe I should see a doctor…”Next thing I know, I'm sitting in front of a Westchester County caseworker. Cuz my parents felt a psychologist or private therapist cost too much.I had no idea what I was feeling… much less why.The intake experience was horrific.I felt… badgered.She called it… delicately. “Maybe the accident looked like an attempt to… maybe… harm yourself?” But she continued with a sledgehammer.“I know you have a secret you want to tell me.” Rinse, repeat… Rinse, repeat…I wanted so badly to please her. But had no idea what I was feeling… much less why.Worse yet? There were things I didn't want to tell her. Darker than the physical or sexual abuse she was probably check-listing. Things a traumatized kid might do… himself.I never went back. I told my parents I was uncomfortable talking to her.My dad rocked back in his dark, maple, Early American dining room chair. “Fine. That's your choice.”He paused. Looking directly at my mother as he said to me, “I can see you won't speak to this counselor. I see no reason to look for another for you to talk to. Your decision.”And that was that.We were all dying for freedom.Finally at 63, a psychologist specializing in autism gave me another name, Alexithymia.He said a lot of autistics can know something is wrong. But not know what. And baptized me, Autism Spectrum Disorder… with a side of ADHD.2016 was a good year. A damn fine year.But 1972 was a summer from hell.The last US troops shipped home, fleeing Viet Nam. Palestinians massacred Israelis at the Olympics. My father died that August. The week after he molested me for the last time.We were all dying for freedom.[music]Cuz… if you don't know us… how ya gonna love us.InterludeOkay. Here's the last frag I toss… today. It's an automatic, constant routine when I'm around… well, people.Checking for verbal mistakes, missed cues… Just trying to understand, what's going on…?So I'm still trying to sort it out,choose words carefully to explain,clearing my throat,moving my sleeping tongue,loosening my jaw,getting ready to speak…“HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”“Umm… Nothing…?” Close as I come to a lie at that age.I've been lying in the grass for an hour or so, exploring with my new magnifying glass.See, there was this great hobby shop in Johnson City. It had all kinds of cool science “toys.” And I had saved my 50-cent allowance for weeks to buy a “Real, hand-held, magnifying glass  —  made with ALL-METAL handle!!”I was entranced.Examining grass leaves, dew drops, and…Ants.Dozens of ants. One after another.Legs.Antennae.Mandibles.Eyes.Guiltily burning off the occasional leg with focused sunlight…Endless fascination…I was in the flow…“Okay. Whatever you are doing…” I wait for the command I know will end my timeless bliss… “Stop doing it. It's time for lunch.”I sigh. Roll over.And. Trudge. Feel me?That's as close as I can think of to explain my moments of autistic flow.Or, better yet, my autistic joys.That same joy you seeon an autistic kid's faceas he dances endlesslyin a sprinkler in the sun…If I had to guess, this is precisely what Being in the Moment, in the Now, maybe even Zen Satori…Mean.Gradually as I aged, these blissful moments became fewer and fewer…Now, that's all preamble to what I really wanna talk about…Here's the deal on Flow…I think that's where I spent most of my time as a young kid.When I wasn't interacting with family, a few schoolmates, parents, one teacher a year… the few humans I let into my life back then.And that time alone… Endlessly exploring, learning, feeling, being… was…Wordless delight.Gradually as I aged, these blissful moments became fewer and fewer… further and further and further apart… nearly gone…First, I was forced into a school system… That I was clearly not wired for.Rigid.Lockstep.Regimented.Regulated.BORING.No Free Time.To simply… explore.Later, of course, it got MUCH worse. Jobs, relationships, finances… Life in Modern Adult America.Like when I founded Unix World magazine. I was so high on the concept and the joy of process… My inner vision won us awards our first year. Western Publishing Association Best New Publication and Best Issue. Beating out Macworld and PC World.Yeah. We won awards. A couple months after I was fired from my own mag. Fired because… in my autistic mind… the game was Create the Most Amazing Publication… Ever.But the whole time, the world was shouting that it was Make the Most Money You Can… Right Now.Snake eyes. I lost.My natural state, left alone to my own devices? Wandering from moment to moment of… fascination.Now, I have some personal speculation to get off my chest.First… I don't think I had a native personality when I was a kid…At least not as bell-curve average humans understand a personality.My natural state, left alone to my own devices? Wandering from moment to moment of fascination. No motivations. No intentions. No (verbal) thought…So… I was either happy exploring in the fields… or with my chemistry set in the basement… or catching polliwogs in Spring pools…Or I was forced to don my “personality.”In other words,the language,facial expressions,body language,polite responses,social lies,and predictable actionsthat humans think of as “personality”…and that social contact demands.Which is so natural for most humans, they aren't even aware of it.Even though they must have it from me… to feel safe.But, for me, “personality” was likebeing dragged out of my comfy pajamas,forced intothe worst, most cumbersome, restrictive, awkward, embarrassing winter coat,ear muffs,muffler,heavy snow boots,and mittensyour mother ever stuffed you intoto shove you onto that bus to kindergarten…And “personality” still is suffocating. Today. In my 70s. Ten years after diagnosed as autistic and ADHD.Especially, “fun times”… They're the real killers.Parties.Intimate conversations…Shudder... Family holidays? So nightmarish, I wrote the 7-page narrative poem sneaking my mother's creepy g-d on high.These are all times I must adopt my “personality.” You know, to survive. No matter how much “fun” they're supposed to be.What pros call “masking”? Really nothing more than exhausting habits of behavior & speech. That I must shroud myself in. Like an embalmed mummy. Just so it's easy for other humans… to feel “comfortable” around me.Not an essential Self. Just, ya know, “personality.”Certainly not me. Nothing comfortable about it.I'm going to hazard a guess.Which may be narcissistic delusion… Flow seems awfully close to what the Buddha described as experiencing “no-self” vs. the “conditioned mind.”From at least age 2 on, I clearly remember lucid dreaming and long periods of time spent without verbal thought of any kind. Just perceiving, in awe and wonder…EVERYTHING.Until I had to interact with humans. Any humans. Even those I was required… to “love.”And donning the “personality”? The joy collapsed. Fast as a quantum waveform when you try to measure it. Not into pain…Collapsing into an all-absorbing effort.Intellectualizing every word,gesture,tone of voice of my own…Then interpreting all those of each and every human I was with at the time…and THEN determining precisely the right word,tone of voice,facial expression,and body attitude to project back…all at the same timeTo avoid being in trouble.Because I was… Bad.And I had to protect everyone around me from that.Every. Single. Second…And even at a young age, a growing sense of the need to protect others…From me.Because I was different. Because I hurt people without understanding. Because I acted as if I were “arrogant”… etc., etc.Like two divorces. Cuz I could be amazing for 3 to 6 months. Caring. Fun as hell. Then fall into deep depressions and work burnouts. Cuz I couldn't handle that much intimacy. Hell, that much time alone with another human…Because I was… Bad.And I had to protect everyone around me from that.Every. Single. Second… That I am with another human.Except very young children. And of course, animals… Since I was… 4 years old.Now since diagnosis, I found a few tricks.In 2019 when I first started writing about my autism, I was all about lists. Trying to “help” others. Took me a year or two to realize we are… every one of us autists… different. Different lives. Different needs and goals. Different survival skills.So I'm only an “expert” on my own life. Even if I am the only expert on that there is.Your mileage certainly will vary.But for me? My autistic life is not about “getting better.” Or fixing me. It's about knowing who I truly am. And what I truly need. Doing what I can to meet those needs.Then being… me.So I moved to the Country…Living in the trailer across the courtyardFrom my third, loving wifeWhere I can reduce sensory overload.Reduce the number of humans I talk with To only folks I feel comfortable around.And stopped failing at jobs I was never built to do.But I… now… can pursue those things that have brought me joy since childhood.Spending unstructured, unmeasured time on any of my passions…walking in the wildest Nature I have access to,baking bread,fermenting pickles,gardening,deep-focus while replaying a favorite movie… that seventh time,illustrating,writing,playing music,researching world events….so, so many others.When I pursue a “special interest”… alone? Sometimes it's nearly orgasmic… In fact, I've redefined my understanding of my passions.They're not a forbidden pleasure. A shameful quirk. Something I “waste time on” when there's nothing more important to do.They are my gateway to Bliss, Satori, Oneness… Maybe even whatever God is… or Isn't…I'm not talking toxic positivity. My autistic joys aren't some advanced spiritual state I've achieved in my 70s. And now, suddenly… I'm here to tell you how to make everything okay. And talk you into buying your 5th NEW self-help system on the way out the door.But my joys are moments of love and happiness sprinkled through most of my days. Between meltdowns and burnouts. The July 19, 1976 issue of Sports Illustrated landed on newsstands just days before the Montreal Summer Olympics, with a cover that perfectly captured America's hopes. There was marathon legend Frank Shorter, looking to defend the gold medal he'd won in Munich after putting all his focus on the marathon. There was 19-year-old swimming star Shirley Babashoff, ready to take on the seemingly unbeatable East German women. And there was Indiana basketball standout Scott May, hoping to help the U.S. reclaim Olympic gold after the infamous ending to the 1972 championship game. Inside, the magazine previewed a Games already overshadowed by political boycotts from Taiwan and more than two dozen African nations. But history would remember Montreal for something much more uplifting: Nadia Comaneci's perfect 10s, and one of the greatest American swimming teams ever assembled headlined by a young backstroker named John Naber. John joins us this week on Past Our Prime, and trust us, he's worth the wait... even if we accidentally made him wait twice. At just 20 years old, the USC swimmer nicknamed "The Snake" became one of the breakout stars of the Montreal Games, winning four gold medals and a silver while breaking world records in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke. Along with teammates Jim Montgomery, Brian Goodell, and the rest of a legendary U.S. squad, Naber helped lead one of the most dominant Olympic performances in swimming history. The American men captured 12 of the 13 gold medals available, won 25 of the 33 individual medals, and were so dominant they routinely finished gold-silver-bronze. Naber wasn't just fast—he had flair. He bowed to the crowd, waved the American flag, and embraced the spotlight like someone who knew he was living through a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Now, about that "worth the wait" part. This is actually John's second appearance on the show because, in a masterclass of podcast production, we forgot to record the first interview. That's right—we managed to fumble an interview with a four-time Olympic gold medalist. Thankfully, John is even more gracious than he is competitive. He came back, told the stories again, and somehow made them just as good—maybe even better. He'll tell us how he nearly made the biggest blunder in Olympic history, what it felt like to set a world record with his parents watching from the stands, and why that legendary U.S. swim team became far more than a collection of stars.
