Published in 1990, 'Homeland' follows the story of Drizzt from around the time and circumstances of his birth and his upbringing amongst the drow (dark elves). From the blurb of 'Homeland':"Travel back to strange and exotic Menzoberranzan, the vast city of the drow and homeland to Icewind Dale hero Drizzt Do'Urden. The young prince of a royal house, Drizzt grows to maturity in the vile world of his dark kin. Possessing honor beyond the scope of his unprincipled society, young Drizzt faces an inevitable dilemma. Show NotesThis week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their deep dive into the Monk - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. Monks are spiritual ascetics and practitioners of a mystical energy known as ki, the magical essence which flows through all living things.According to the Player's Handbook: 'Whatever their discipline, monks are united in their ability to magically harness the energy that flows in their bodies. Whether channeled as a striking display of combat prowess or a subtler focus of defensive ability and speed, this energy infuses all that a monk does.Monks make careful study of a magical energy that most monastic traditions call ki. This energy is an element of the magic that suffuses the multiverse—specifically, the element that flows through living bodies. Monks harness this power within themselves to create magical effects and exceed their bodies' physical capabilities, and some of their special attacks can hinder the flow of ki in their opponents. Using this energy, monks channel uncanny speed and strength into their unarmed strikes. As they gain experience, their martial training and their mastery of ki gives them more power over their bodies and the bodies of their foes.'In this episode, we cover the following 8 subclasses:Way of the Long Death (from SCAG)Way of the Drunken Master (from XGtE)Way of the Kensei (from XGtE)Way of the Sun Soul (from XGtE)Way of Mercy (from TCoE)Way of the Astral Self (from TCoE)Way of the Ascendant Dragon (from FToD)Way of the Cobalt Soul (from TCSR)Note - during the episode, we incorrectly label 'the Way of the Cobalt Soul tradition as being found from the Explorer's Guide to Wildmount'. Show notesThis week Fiona and ever-returning guest cohost Rob read through 'Trophy Gold', a roleplaying game about a group of treasure-hunters entering the haunted and forgotten places of the world. The game tells the story of the treasure-hunters' obsessive drive to seek ever greater riches in a desperate bid to stay alive. 'Trophy Gold' takes the collaborative, push-your-luck rules and rolls of its sister game, Trophy Dark, and blends them with the survive-by-your-wits mentality of old school fantasy games. Instead of the ever-increasing power that comes with leveling up found in other games, treasure-hunters in Trophy Gold remain fragile, meaning death is always just one bad roll away.RPG discussed: Trophy Gold published by The Gauntlet, July 2022.Consider using our affiliate link when using DM's Guild!#SupportyourFLGSCredits The DM's Book Club is hosted, recorded, edited, and produced by Fiona Howat (@WAIR_Podcast) and Hamilton (@TheDragonDM). CRAIG & BRIAN WATCH 007 / 002 :: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE a P&S/PRP presentation Legions of 007 fans can't be wrong! YOU demanded it and we listened! Craig & Brian ARE BACK and ready to tackle the thrill-packed, danger-ridden second installment of the long-running James Bond film franchise: From Russia with Love!! Craig Smith, rapidly approaching a dozen movies watched in lifetime and now fully caffeine-free, leads an exciting discussion that follows gentleman secret agent James Bond around the globe from England to Turkey to Yugoslavia to Italy. Brian Linnen, rather embarrassed after years of telling his friends and family that he coined the phrase "Where there's smoke there's fire", does his best to flavor the discussion with trivia from his years of Bond fandom. And taking a cue from the film itself, the two end the episode by engaging in ritualistic hand-to-hand gypsy combat for the love of Minnesota's pride and joy, Andy Schaal. Craig and Brian feel that 60 years is enough time for everyone to have watched "From Russia with Love", so spoilers will be flying faster than a Peter Hunt edited fight scene! You have been warned!! Thanks to Robbie Sims for lending his dulcet tones to the show's introduction, and to the Jingle Punks for the use of their cool spy song "Choose Your Path." Understanding the brain's tendencies to avoid excessive thinking is crucial for educators. We need to leverage this knowledge to help foster a love for problem-solving and critical thinking among our students. Listen in as Dr. Colin Roche explores the idea that the human mind isn't inherently designed for thinking, and how we, as educators, can optimize our teaching strategies to encourage curiosity and encourage thoughtful engagement in our students. In this episode, Chef Roche also mentions the book "Why Don't Students Like School" by Daniel Willingham (https://amzn.to/3PlJKIj), which is an invaluable resource that all educators should read and the information source for the majority of content in the episode. The book's subtitle is "A cognitive scientist answers questions about how the mind works and what it means for the classroom".CULINARY EDUCATORS' BOOK: To get even more information on a wide variety of teaching topics, be sure to check out the book Dr. Roche co-wrote titled "Culinary Educators' Teaching Tools and Tips", which is published by Kendall Hunt (https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/culinary-educators-teaching-tools-and-tips).SPONSORSHIP / SUPPORT: If you like the show, or this episode, why not show your support by buying us a cup or two of coffee to help defray some of the out-of-pocket expenses? Because YOU demanded it, the fan-favorite team that delighted listeners around the world on the premiere episode of "Teach Craig Stuff" is back in their very own sidecast!! Craig Smith, the headband-wearing founder of the Pods and Sods Network, teams up with Brian Linnen, the less popular host of the Permanent Record Podcast, on an audio adventure decades in the making! "Craig & Brian Watch 007" kicks off in style, going back to the year 1962, to discuss James Bond's big-screen debut! Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Joseph Wiseman, and Jack Lord took the world by storm and cinema was never the same again. Connery was a hero unlike any that had graced movie screens before, and Andress took the world's breath away with her forever-iconic bikini-clad introduction. Meanwhile, behind the camera, editor Peter Hunt was changing the way movies would look in the coming decade. In a relationship not unlike that of Bond and Quarrel, Craig and Brian do their best to fill this premiere installment with as much trivia, humor, and discussion as they can muster. Things kick off with timely coverage of a major announcement in the literary world of Bond, before turning to the film. And as the show opening mentions, Craig and Brian have a license to spoil, so beware! If you haven't watched this 61 year old movie yet, you might want to finally make time before hitting play. Special thanks to Bond authority Robbie Sims for lending his dulcet tones to the show's introduction. If Craig and Brian didn't both suffer from inferiority complexes before having to follow Mr. Sims, well, they certainly do now! Check out Robbie's first Bond book, "Quantum of Silliness: The Peculiar World of Bond, James Bond" here: https://www.thehistorypress.co.uk/publication/quantum-of-silliness/9780750994040/ and check out his hilarious Bond-related twitter at https://twitter.com/TheTchaikovsky Thanks to the Jingle Punks for the use of their cool spy song "Choose Your Path."
