This week, Jackie and Eryka head down to the swamps of Louisiana for a Southern Gothic nightmare packed with hoodoo, secrets, creepy old mansions, and enough suspicious old people to make anyone cancel their travel plans. In this episode, they're talking about The Skeleton Key — the 2005 supernatural thriller where curiosity, bad decisions, and absolutely zero respect for “mind your business” collide in spectacular fashion.Expect conversations about eerie atmosphere, terrifying mirrors, swamp vibes, manipulative elders, and why Caroline really should've turned that car around about 20 minutes in. Plus, the hosts break down that infamous ending that left audiences staring at the screen in stunned silence and immediately questioning everyone over the age of 70.If you love creepy folklore, slow-burn tension, and horror movies where the house itself feels like it's judging you… this episode's got the key.
IT'S VOODOO, BABY kicks off with Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands as we dig into Ian Softley's The Skeleton Key (2005), one of the most slept-on horror films of the 2000s. We break down all five monster reveals, the Hoodoo vs. Voodoo distinction, and why Kate Hudson's Caroline belongs in the conversation for smartest horror protagonist ever. Plus: the film's touchy racial subtext, it's comparison to Get Out, and the ending that had us shook. Dom, ILL, and Q dive into the eerie Southern gothic world of The Skeleton Key (2005) — a film packed with hoodoo, mystery, and one of the most talked-about twist endings in 2000s horror.Starring Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, John Hurt, and Peter Sarsgaard, this supernatural thriller takes us deep into a Louisiana plantation filled with secrets… but does it still hold up today? The crew breaks down:The unsettling atmosphere and setting
Dana and Tom with returning guest, Heather Stewart (The Revisionist Almanac's Senior European Correspondent), discuss Memento (2001) - celebrating its 25th Anniversary: written and directed by Christopher Nolan, cinematography by Wally Pfister, music by David Julyan, editing by Dody Dom, starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano.Plot Summary: Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) is a man driven by a single, desperate purpose: to find and kill the man who raped and murdered his wife. However, his quest is complicated by a rare, untreatable form of anterograde amnesia—a result of the same attack—which leaves him unable to store new memories for more than a few minutes. To navigate a world that constantly resets, Leonard relies on an intricate system of Polaroid photos, handwritten notes, and permanent tattoos etched across his body to track his progress and identify his allies and enemies. As the film unfolds in a unique, non-linear structure that mirrors Leonard's own disorientation, he must piece together the fragmented truth of his past while questioning the reliability of his own "facts" and the motives of those claiming to help him.Guest:Heather StewartThe Revisionist Almanac's Senior European Correspondent@heatherjstewart on IG, X, LetterboxdPreviously on Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), Requiem for a Dream (2000), Little Miss Sunshine (2006)Chapters:00:00 Introduction, Cast, and Background for Memento04:45 Welcome Back, Heather Stewart05:33 Heather's Reverence for Chris Nolan06:40 Relationship(s) with Memento16:32 Is Memento the Skeleton Key of Nolan Films?21:34 Where Does Memento Rank Among Christopher Nolan Films?29:35 Plot Summary for Memento30:48 What is Memento About?39:12 Did You Know?45:21 What's Happening with Heather Stewart?48:46 Best Performance(s)01:02:36 Best Scene(s)01:08:53 Second Break01:10:04 Best/Funniest Lines01:12:59 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:20:52 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:28:06 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:30:58 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:36:49 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:42:59 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:45:31 Remaining Questions for Memento01:57:26 Thank You to Heather and Remaining Thoughts02:00:40 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Bluesky, Threads, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/memento-2001-ft-heather-stewartFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Memento, Christopher Nolan, film analysis, memory, storytelling, film history, Nolan's films, psychological thriller, film critique, psychological thriller, narrative structure, film legacy, impact, rewatchability, film theory, movie discussionRonny Duncan Studios

We talk about why mystery is not the same as thrillers, how “millennial cozies” are changing the genre, and why her books are the perfect gateway for romance readers who want puzzles, banter, and emotional payoff—without nightmare fuel.We also dig into why Jenny chose to write standalone companion novels instead of a single sleuth series, the rise of cozy mysteries set in big cities, and the nonfiction rabbit holes (poison! art theft!) that inspire her storytelling.

Louisiana gives us a little bit of everything:- 'Homefront' is the pinnacle of 90s action who's only problem is that it was made in 2013, 'The Skeleton Key' asks big questions like "Why isn't Kate Hudson ever wearing a bra?" and then "Blue Bayou" plays a game of 'How much bad news can you fit in to one movie'. All this sets up what might be the hardest debate we've had on The USofAMovie Podcast Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lay down a line of protective brick dust and scream "I don't believe!" because we are discussing Iain Softley's 2005 Southern Gothic thriller, The Skeleton Key.Starring Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands, this Ehren Kruger joint has a great twist (or is it a reveal?) that may or may not have dicey racial implications.Plus: not trusting Peter Sarsgaard, Black character exposition, the difference between hoodoo and voodoo, and the ending we still can't believe a studio signed off on!Reference: Max Schiersner Caodaglio. I've never resisted Love is Blind so much as run out of time for it... but then Audie Cornish said she wanted to come on the show to talk about it, and I said: I will watch any reality show, in its entirety, to talk to you about it. (Cornish was previously best known as the co-host of NPR's All Things Considered; now she is best known as the host of CNN's early morning newscast and The Assignment with Audie Cornish). I did my homework and thought I had smart things to say about Love is Blind and then Audie had way, way smarter things to say, specifically about the ways in which this current season functions as a skeleton key for the ideologies battling for dominance in our cultural moment. Even if you've never watched an episode of Love is Blind, there's a LOT here about how people perform their identities and politics and relationship needs that will snag you — and if you have watched this season (or any season), you're gonna love it even more. HACK THE PLANET!Thirty years ago, that was the catchphrase for a high-energy youth culture movie focusing on a diverse crew of good-looking, well-dressed, "teenage" hackers in New York City. All these kids wanna do via modems and computers is to have fun....until they discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus which eventually result in an ecological disaster. Directed by Iain Softely (Backbeat, K-Pax, The Skeleton Key), this techno-fueled romp eventually became a cult classic powered by its danceable soundtrack (Massive Attack, Prodigy, Orbital) and its cast of up-and-comers including Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Laurence Mason, and Matthew Lillard. From the haunted plantations of Louisiana to the spiritual resistance of Haiti, Vodou and Hoodoo have long been misunderstood—and often sensationalized. But what's the truth behind the magic?
In this Mere Mortals book review, we revisit Skeleton Key, the third Alex Rider novel, blending teenage espionage with lessons on stoicism, discipline, and composure. Beyond the action-packed spy drama, I explore how the book's villain, the General, embodies a powerful, minimalistic strength that shaped my early understanding of discipline and quiet resilience. On the Popular Front Patreon we have a separate show called Skeleton Key. It's a monthly report on contemporary far-right militancy all over the world. To listen to that show you have to join the BONUS tier on the Patreon. It's paywalled and it will stay paywalled. People paying for extra content like this is how we keep going. There have been two particularly brutal episodes of Skeleton Key that are about the militant sadism of 764 and Maniac Murder Cult (MKY). These are two groups that are inspired by far-right violence and left hand path occultism, but have created something entirely more awful. I refer to their ideology as “ultra sadism”. To put it plainly, they're main goals are to cause untold havoc across the world, simply because their mad at it. Both groups, 764 and MKY, are know for extreme child abuse, pedophilia, random killings, and the torture of animals. These groups are as despicable as it gets. They've literally caused children to mutilate themselves, something 764 and MKY consider a victory. As horrible as this is, a way to combat such groups is to air out their actions and identify who's behind it all. When we published episodes of Skeleton Key investigating these groups, many people who paid for the content asked that we publish them for free on the public podcast channel. This is because the resources and information spoken about in the episodes can help parents and carers to identify if their children are being groomed or drawn into these militant sadist networks. So, here are both the episodes, back to back, for free. These episodes document the horrors of 764 and MKY. This is Hell on Earth: The Ultra Sadism Report.
