Dr. Peter Stock is Professor of Surgery at UCSF and heads up the solid organ pancreas transplant program as well as pancreatic islet cell program. Liver cancer is the 5th most common cancer worldwide, and the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Nationally, there are approximately 18,000 patients on the liver transplant list. Annually, about 6,000 patients receive a liver transplant. Because of the organ shortage, many patients waiting for liver transplants die on the list or become too sick to undergo transplant.
