A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that statin use in patients with chronic liver disease was associated with a lower risk of liver cancer and hepatic decompensation, suggesting potential protective effects beyond lipid management. Surveys by the Annenberg Public Policy Center revealed widespread misinformation about the risks of consuming raw milk, highlighting the need for public education on the importance of pasteurization. New research links red meat allergy (alpha-gal syndrome) to bites from deer ticks and western black-legged ticks, expanding the geographic risk area and emphasizing the need for clinicians to consider this diagnosis in patients with unexplained allergic symptoms following tick bites.

In 2021, Albertina Dancy began to experience abdominal pain, but that wasn't all. She also had gastrointestinal issues, jaundice and other problems. However, she didn't take them seriously and thought they could be successfully addressed with over-the-counter remedies. When that didn't happen, she sought medical attention. Albertina's doctor said the symptoms, combined with her existing fatty liver disease, merited a trip to an oncologist. A series of scans and tests, plus the stiffness of her liver, led to a diagnosis of liver cancer. The diagnosis left Albertina depressed, wondering if she would get well again. She regrets not seeking medical attention at an earlier time because doctors said her only treatment option with a regimen of radiation treatment and chemotherapy. The chemo was extremely tough on Albertina. She was in constant pain, felt extreme fatigue and was demoralized about losing all her hair. However, she achieved survivorship and says because she pays close attention to diet and exercise, her health is better than it was prior to her diagnosis. By way of advice, Albertina Dancy strongly advises anyone suffering unusual health issues to immediately seek medical attention. On so many issues, Congress has not been willing or able to act. But when faced with horrifying stories of death and mismanagement, Congress finally passed legislation to reform the US organ transplant system. They did so because people like Donna Cryer, a transplant recipient and patient advocate, demanded a better system for Americans who need lifesaving organ transplants. Now, as the new law moves into implementation, the work continues. In this episode, Donna and I discuss:The new legislation that is breaking up the deadly organ transplant monopolyHow ignoring the expertise and insights of patients dooms us to slow progress making healthcare safer and better Her advice for young people: “take your shot”Donna says we all need to start listening more closely to patients with lived experience:“I often think if you... had many people with great deals of experience and intelligence who were highly motivated to help you achieve your goal. Why would you not want to use them? Why would you not want to partner with them? Why would you work really, really hard to keep them away from solving the problem? And that's how people treat patients and patient advocates.”Relevant LinksDonna Cryer's testimony to the Senate Finance Committee on organ transplant system failures (just past the 48:00 mark)Summary of the new law to break up the organ transplantation monopolyMore about the Global Liver InstituteSee more details about the Advanced Advocacy Academy Donna's organization launchedVisit UNOS' websiteAbout Our GuestDonna R. This episode of Walk, Don't Run to the Doctor emphasizes the importance of building and maintaining a healthy microbiome for better health outcomes, disease prevention, and overall well-being. The microbiome, a complex population of microorganisms living in the gut, plays a significant role in protecting against cancer, regulating digestion, and supporting various metabolic and immune functions. A home-cooked diet, particularly a whole food omnivorous diet rich in fiber and fermented foods, helps to cultivate a resilient microbiome. Exercise, scant to moderate alcohol consumption (especially wine), and avoiding sugar, refined flours, and artificial sweeteners further enhance gut health. This episode also warns against overuse of antibiotics and reliance on probiotic supplements, advocating instead for a food-based approach through diet and lifestyle changes. Key Takeaways: Microbiome's Role in Health: The microbiome impacts everything from cancer prevention to appetite regulation, insulin sensitivity, immune function, and even brain health. Diet and Gut Health: A Mediterranean-style, omnivorous whole food, diet improves microbiome diversity and overall health, reducing risks for conditions like obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Fermented Foods: Incorporating fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and kombucha supports a healthy microbiome and reduces cancer risk. Exercise and Lifestyle: Regular exercise promotes gut health and boosts immunity, while avoiding sugar, artificial sweeteners, and unnecessary antibiotics helps maintain microbiome balance. Natural Approach: The podcast recommends focusing on diet and lifestyle over probiotic or prebiotic supplements to build a resilient microbiome. For more insights and advice on reducing dependence on medications through lifestyle changes, make sure to subscribe to Walk, Don't Run to the Doctor. Liver cancer or hepatocellular cancer is the 6th most common cause of cancer and the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. In the US, liver cancer is the 6th leading cause of death. Common risk factors of liver cancer:•Cirrhosis or liver scarring and it's underlying risk factors (20% of cases of liver cancer form without cirrhosis present, yet in the presence of or more of the below conditions) •Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (formerly, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) of which obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol are risk factors •Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C (transmitted via body fluids, commonly during sex, childbirth (mother to fetus) or with IV drug use) •Alcohol •Smoking •Aflatoxin (a fungus that may grow on grains and nuts improperly store in hot and humid environments) Common symptoms of liver cancer:•None•Abdominal discomfort•Abdominal swelling •Nausea or vomiting•Gastrointestinal bleeding•Weight loss•Loss of appetite •Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)•Easy bruising or bleeding•Persistent itching•Fatigue•Fever Populations at increased risk for liver cancer:Nationally, the highest rates are seen in Asian/Pacific Islanders and American Indian/Alaskan Natives. Rising rates have been noted in the Latinx population. Globally, rates are actually highest outside the US, in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Liver cancer prevention:•Eat whole food, plant-forward nutrition (fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, minimal saturated fat)•Reduce alcohol intake or abstain https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/about-alcohol-use/index.html •Get screened for and vaccinated against hepatitis B (infants, children and adults) https://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis-b/index.html*Get screened and treated for hepatitis C (no vaccine currently exists and many patients are without symptoms, which often only occur with advanced disease.) https://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis-c/index.html •Practice safer sex with regular condom use (including same gender couples)•Get screened for STDs annually or with every new partnerSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
