We haven't had guests in the studio is awhile, but YouTubers Two Blondes Drink Beer, Candi & Cara, brought it! Oh, and they also brought beer & swag! These BFF beer nerds talk beer on their show while judging the beers based on Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) guidelines. We talk about how they got into beer and how their show was created because of the pandemic. We get in on the act by judging mystery beers. Hilarity ensues. It's fairly obvious Nick & Nigel aren't beer judges, but they do have opinions! Beers consumed and "judged": Schneider Weisse, Aventinus Wheat Dopplebock Ale; ExBEERiment Brewing, Synthesis German Pilsner; Limitless Brewing, Pineapple, OJ, Mango, & Rum Cake Cream Ale; Melvin Eureka Brewing, Night Visions Vanilla Latte; & TRVE Brewing, Dunwich Porter.
In the final installment of Colby’s anniversary series, Jeff and Lord Chandler sit down with local brewing legends Ryan Brooks, founder/brewmaster of SouthNorte Beer Co., and Jim Millea, head brewer at OB Brewery. These local brewing legends chat about the early homebrewing days that brought them together, their love of Baja, and share a story of the day how they almost died for beer... we’re not joking. Both Ryan and Jim talk about their connection to brewing in Mexico and discuss “business-as-unusual" in the days of COVID-19. Ryan Brooks: Ryan Brooks is the founder/brewmaster of SouthNorte Beer Co. He’s an internationally recognized beer judge and certified Cicerone. Brooks, formerly a touring metal drummer and award-winning homebrewer, worked at Malt Shovel Brewing Co. (Australia) and Black Market Brewing (Temecula) before starting at Coronado Brewing Co. in 2012. Eventually he worked his way up to brewmaster at Coronado. Under Brooks' leadership, Coronado won the extremely prestigious 2014 World Beer Cup Champion Mid-Size Brewery award. In 2017 Brooks founded SouthNorte at crossroads of Tijuana and San Diego bridging flavors of Mexico the San Diego craft. Jim Millea: Jim Millea is Head Brewer at OB Brewery in San Diego, CA and co-owner and brewer at Cerveceria El Destino in Valle de Guadelupe, Baja California, Mexico. Jim has been brewing professionally since 2014 when he was hired as assistant brewer at O'Sullivan Brothers Brewing Company. Before this, Jim was an avid home brewer and completed internships at Benchmark Brewing Company and Ballast Point Brewing Company. During his homebrewing days, Jim became a recognized beer judge through the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) run by local San Diego homebrew club QUAFF (Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity). In 2015, Jim graduated from UCSD's Professional Certificate in Brewing Program. Originally from Massachusetts, Jim has been living in San Diego since 2000 and in Ocean Beach since 2008 where he currently resides. Since helping to build-out and now run OB Brewery, Jim has received several awards for his beers including bronze medals for both the Elevator Red IPA and Rooftop Saison at the 2018 San Diego International Beer Festival. At the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), Jim received a silver medal in 2017 for the Hidden Gem Dunkelweizen and a gold medal in 2018 for the B.Right.On Pale Ale. The 2018 gold medal win at GABF also scored Jim and OB Brewery the Small Brewpub Brewery and Small Brewpub Brewery of the year award. Jim hopes to continue making great beer in OB and is looking forward to making beer at the new venture in Baja that is now only in its very beginning stages.
The Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) was founded in 1985 to "to promote beer literacy and the appreciation of real beer, and to recognize beer tasting and evaluation skills." The approach to gain this certification is very hands on. Ben Hunter, Sales Manager for Denizens Brewing Co. and Certifed Beer Judge explains the process of studying for the certification. We dive into what it's like to judge a beer competition, and how to start judging beer.
Ahh, the "OH SHIT I NEED A PHOTO" beer glass half full shot. Katy (@klwatts) treks to Orleans to attend the Stray Dog Brewing Company (@StrayDogBeer) launch party at Occo Kitchen (@occokitchen). Little do the attendees know, she has a recorder in hand.. Show Notes: Katy, why didn't you take an Uber or a taxi to Orleans? Well, this is not a high budget podcast. And, how else was I suppose to get that sweet, sweet bus background noise recorded? I believe this is the brewery that Marc is referring to in Navan: Draft Horse Brewery. There were a lot of politicians drinking beer (it was a good beer to drink). "This One", a California Common is only available for a short few months - I'd grab it while you can! This may be the first time French has appeared on the podcast. Yes, Marc's beer is called Kelly BIPA (oh, homebrewer's and their beer names). This beer appeared on the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) test that Matt Petitpas took. "Don't be a beer dick." - Marc Plante Marc is referring to D&S Southern Comfort BBQ in Carlsbad Springs. Homebrewing is an addiction of sorts. Sasha will not actually put the baby in the basement, unless she needs to grab a beer and happens to have the baby with her. Stock Pot Ales was a brewery in the Wellington Gastropub that is now Stalwart Brewing Company. Pssst. I yanked the profile photos from the Stray Dog Brewing Company Facebook page. This week's episode of Fuhmentaboudit! is all about beer! At the top of the show, Mary, Chris, and Rachel check in with Andrew Luberto, who is running for Northeast Representative on the board of directors of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), a non-profit organization that certifies and ranks beer judges. For the rest of the show, they are joined in the studio by Mike Smith, co-author of The Comic Book Story of Beer: The World's Favorite Beverage from 7000 BC to Today's Craft Brewing Revolution. Tune in to hear them discuss how there's no greater time in history to be a beer drinker or beer brewer, and why it's only getting better!
In Episode 9, Dean and Jason discuss the criteria required to advance in rank in the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), they take a look at Black Butte Porter as they discuss the American Porter category from the 2015 BJCP Guidelines, and then the flaw of the month discussion is Oxidation.
Ed Westemeier, communications director of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), gives us the history behind the organization and talks about its role in brewing today.
