In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about USC's big 2025 Signing Day press conference where they heard from head coach Lincoln Riley and all of the new coaching and personnel staff members. The Trojans have added some impressive talents and personalities that should help this program get to the next level. Both Ryan and Connor were very optimistic about the new hires after the press conference, with assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach Rob Ryan standing out for his outgoing personality and exceptional story telling. They were also impressed with Chad Savage as tight ends and inside receivers coach and Trovon Reed as the new cornerbacks coach, both young coaches are exceptional on the recruiting trail and should help the Trojans tremendously. It does appear that USC will be losing one staff member with assistant linebackers coach Bryson Allen-Williams heading to Georgia according to a 247Sports report. On the personnel side, Chad Bowden coming over from Notre Dame is looking like a homerun hire. He is filling out his staff, with the latest edition being Wisconsin general manager Max Stienecker who will join the previously announced Zaire Turner hired as the new assistant AD of recruiting Operations and Dre Brown as the executive director of scouting and personnel. The guys also talk about the two new additions to the roster, with USC announcing the signing of Jadyn Ramos, a defensive end from Conroe (Texas) and AJ Tuitele, a linebacker from Mojave (Nev.). Welcome to #FANuary, where we talk about the movies you, the listener, asked us to discuss. Our first entry in #FANuary is 1987's TAX ATTACK 87, a Learning Corporation of America production staring comedian Robert Klein (SNL). Learning Corporation of America was owned by New World Pictures and focused on educational videos like In the FOR SAFETY'S SAKE: IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD starring Gary Coleman. By the way, if you haven't listened to our episode on that video, do yourself a favor and check it out. TAX ATTACK 87 is meant to be an instructional video for how to complete your annual taxes using the new laws that were introduced in 1986. It's equal parts educational video and live action children's board game. Given that children don't file taxes and adults don't typically need board games to learn, it's anyone's guess who the target audience is for this little slice of New World Pictures americana. We leave no stone unturned looking for deductions and credits in TAX ATTACK 87. Why is Robert Klein arguing with a off-screen IRS agent? Ryan has a solid theory. Erica gets immediately bored when Marc explains how to play craps. Ryan shares a story about going to comedy traffic school with his mom. Erica sings a banger of an opening song. Both Ryan and Marc share familial memories of watching the America's Cup when it was held in San Diego. This, of course, bores Erica even more. We even make a sneaky Twin Peaks reference even though we couldn't have anticipated the passing of David Lynch (RIP) only a couple days after the recording. Seriously though, Dune is one of Marc's favorite movies and he thinks its way better than the Denis Villenueve version.
As 2025 kicks off, U.S. officials have been on high alert following a pair of New Years Day attacks that occurred in separate American cities only hours apart. One of the incidents, a suicide bombing involving a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, has also become the focus of controversy for reasons few might have predicted: new allegations that the bomber had possessed knowledge of U.S. war crimes, secret propulsion technologies being used by China, and a supposed UAP unacknowledged special access program. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we examine the strange allegations that recently surfaced during an appearance by intelligence analyst Sam Shoemate on the podcast of Shawn Ryan. Both Ryan and Shoemate say they received email communications from an individual who identified themselves as Matthew Livelsberger, the same individual's whose body was found at the scene of the Las Vegas incident a short time later. Is there any weight to the shocking allegations, or is there evidence supporting the possibility of an unfortunate hoax? Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? Please consider reporting your sighting to the UAP Sightings Reporting System, a public resource for information about sightings of aerial phenomena. Our conversation for National Donut Day features Missy and Ryan Spielman, owners of the mobile food truck "Donut Dive." Missy and Ryan share their story of how they came to start their donut business. Both widowed before, they married four years ago and decided they wanted a joyful business that they could operate together. Ryan, with an engineering mindset, researched extensively and suggested making mini donuts. Missy reminisces about her first experience making donuts, which involved a friend's sleepover and campfire donuts. She admits she didn't have much experience before meeting Ryan, who pushed the idea of mini donuts through his enthusiasm and research. The couple explains their creative process and the enjoyable brainstorming exercises they did to come up with their business plans, often discussing them during long car rides. Ryan talks about the joy of seeing people happy with their donuts. The conversation moves to the logistics of operating a mobile donut and ice cream truck. They found a well-maintained used trailer, made necessary adjustments like installing a fire suppression system, and adapted to the challenges of mobility. Their first public event was at Canvas Community Church, and the business has steadily grown since then, participating in various community events like weddings, baseball tournaments, and shooting competitions. They highlight how they balance their full-time jobs with running their mobile business, attending events only on weekends or when time allows. The couple describes the layout and the operation of their trailer, noting the constant learning curve involved in maintaining the truck and ensuring the safety and quality of their products. They discuss their promotional efforts for National Donut Day and share their excitement about upcoming events at a winery, a farm crawl, and a movie night at Bowman Library. They also talk about the joy of making ice cream and how it complements their donut offerings, sometimes even making custom flavors like peach for specific events. Both Ryan and Missy share stories about the rewarding aspects of their business, like seeing kids' faces light up when getting donuts, and the flexibility it affords them to be selective about events. They also touch upon their future plans to focus fully on Donut Dive upon retirement, explaining their love for the business and community engagement. Follow them on Facebook (and in your car!) for updates about future events.

Co-host Ryan Piansky, a graduate student and patient advocate living with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and eosinophilic asthma, and co-host Holly Knotowicz, a speech-language pathologist living with EoE, who serves on APFED's Health Sciences Advisory Council, have a conversation about the Spoon Theory. In this episode, Ryan and Holly discuss the origin of the Spoon Theory, their experiences, and what the Spoon Theory means in their lives. Listen to this episode to learn how the Spoon Theory could work for you. Both Ryan and Holly will discuss their experiences. [1:39] About ten years ago, fatigue became a challenge for Holly. As she researched options for managing her fatigue, Holly came across the Spoon Theory, a tool she uses and teaches now in conferences and talks. [2:05] The Spoon Theory is a story written and copyrighted by Christine Miserandino in 2003 to help explain how chronic illness affects the amount of physical and or mental energy a person has available for daily activities and tasks and how it can be limited. [2:28] About a year ago, in a Community Conversations episode of APFED's podcast, guest Ashley Spencer discussed EGPA. Ashley and Holly brought up the Spoon Theory. Ryan calls the Spoon Theory a digestible way to convey the effect of living with fatigue from chronic illness. [2:46] Holly shared how Christine Miserandino developed the Spoon Theory while at brunch with a friend. Her friend asked Christine how she was coping living with lupus. Christine grabbed all the spoons from the table and explained that each task throughout the day costs a spoon. [3:21] Christine asked her friend to walk through every activity of her morning. As her friend started talking about the different things she does, Christine would remove a spoon from her pile of 12 spoons. When dinnertime came, there was only one spoon. That limited her choices for dinner; this was long before dinner delivery services. [4:19] Through this exercise, Christine's friend learned how chronic illnesses use up a lot of energy just from existing. For listeners who want to read more, please check out Christines' website, ButYouDontLookSick.com, linked in the show notes. [4:33] Ryan sees the Spoon Theory as an easy way to convey what living with a chronic illness is like. He asks, why is it 12 spoons? Does everyone have the same number of spoons? In interviews, Christine has said 12 was the number of spoons on the table but it is a good representation of the limited supply people with chronic illnesses have. [5:07] According to the theory, healthy people have an “unlimited” supply of spoons, while people with chronic illnesses have to ration their spoons to get through the day. Everybody's number is slightly different but the theory uses 12. [5:22] Ryan shared a story about seeing his sister during the holidays. She doesn't have a chronic illness. She seems to have unlimited spoons for activities she plans, while Ryan may run out of spoons around 10:00 a.m. [5:46] Ryan asks if it is always the same number of spoons per day. Holly says your baseline number is about 12 spoons. It can vary if you borrowed spoons from the day before or if you have spoons left over from the day before. Some say on a good day, you might wake up with 20 spoons but a bad day would start with 12 spoons. [6:34] Holly explains about borrowing spoons. If you run out of spoons on one day, before you finish your activities, you might borrow spoons from the next day by canceling a planned activity for the next day. Holly also explains it to people as a lending library. [7:49] When Ryan was young, he attended the APFED patient education conference every year. He recommends it. His parents warned him not to overextend himself but to take it easy and rest during the day. At every conference, he just kept going for 12-plus hours. When he got home, he would crash for a day. He had used up all his spoons! [8:36] Ryan asks what happens when you run out of spoons. Holly shares that when you run out of spoons, your body might have a flare-up, or be more susceptible to getting sick because you've become rundown. [9:10] It can also lead to comparison with others and feeling sad or anxious because you don't have the energy that healthy people around you have. For the average person with chronic illness, cooking from scratch from a recipe could be three or four spoons. [9:51] For someone with a specialized diet, that could double. You're not just reading the recipe, you have to think about substitutions and go buy them. You have to know if the recipe will taste good with substitutions. It's mentally exhausting to follow recipes for specialized diets. [11:04] Holly is an extrovert but sometimes being with people can take too many of her spoons, so she carefully plans her socializing. Being with good friends might take three spoons. Presenting at a conference takes more spoons. Walking a dog could take two spoons. Taking medication or brushing her teeth could take one spoon. [12:10] For children with chronic illness, going to school might take four of their spoons. Playing soccer might take five spoons, so at times they don't have the energy. This can result in absences from school because they want to have typical social lives but don't have the energy and reserves to do so. It's the same for adults but it's a hard fact for children. [12:53] Ryan was diagnosed with EoE at age two. Ryan thinks back to high school. He woke up at 6:15 every day to get to high school before 8:00. Getting to school on time probably took most of his spoons. The rest of the day was exhausting. He never did any extracurriculars in high school. By 3:00, he was down for the count. [13:50] If Ryan's friends wanted to spontaneously do something after school, he often had to refuse. He needed a few days to prepare physically and mentally for extra activities. Having something sprung on him at the last minute drained more of his spoons. He would like to have had the Spoon Theory to explain it to his friends. [14:52] Holly says there is a mental aspect to having a chronic illness. You have to think about things in advance, especially people living with eosinophilic diseases and/or those who have specialized diets. To consider going out to a meal, you might have to research a restaurant in advance or even talk to the chef. Thinking about and making these phone calls requires spoons. [16:06] Recently Ryan planned to go out with friends. After they picked a restaurant and Ryan chose what he would order, the friends decided to try a different restaurant. Ryan had to check the menus of six other restaurants before they settled on the original one. The extra effort depleted Ryan's energy and he just sat quietly during dinner. [19:14] Ryan didn't push himself to be social because it would have eaten into his reserve spoons for the following day. As it was, he slept in the next day. [20:07] Ryan has had days where he has had to use up the next day's spoons, and then had the next day be equally busy. [20:28] The Spoon Theory can be applied to different chronic illnesses. Most of them are invisible illnesses. It makes sense that Christine's website is named ButYouDontLookSick.com. [21:29] Holly loves that the Spoon Theory provides a visual representation of how our energy works and how we can manage it. Because many chronic illnesses are invisible, people don't always understand why we have to cancel, abort, or decline plans. We often have to prioritize activities to protect our health. It's a different standard. [22:10] We prioritize activities to protect our health and how we feel. Holly uses the Spoon Theory to explain why she declines plans in advance when she has too many things scheduled. She wouldn't be her best self. Holly rarely schedules anything for after an eight-hour workday. [22:55] Holly thinks of herself as a dynamic person who brings a lot to the table. She doesn't want to be in an activity where she can't participate fully. It reflects on how much her diagnosis seeps into her life. She doesn't like to share her EoE with everybody, even though many people in her life know it and she does this podcast! [23:25] Over the last six months, Holly's goal has been to map out her week to keep her energy consistent. She plans when to work out in the morning, when to see patients, and when to fly for international conferences. She gives herself a rest day after the flight or she stumbles and mumbles during the presentation. This means she often declines dinner invitations. [24:45] Holly will accept invitations to destination weddings but then will not book anything extra for a week afterward or she knows she will get sick. It's a pattern. [25:28] Ryan says sometimes people can tell when he's not at his best, but for the most part, he looks relatively healthy. He's up and about, at meetings and conferences but it's such a limited amount of energy that he has available. It's hard for people with unlimited spoons to gauge how many spoons Ryan has left. [25:57] Holly often presents at medical conferences about feeding therapy, eosinophilic diseases, food allergies, FPIES, and tube feeding, and she incorporates the Spoon Theory into some of her talks. She has spoons at the podium and starts dropping them as she goes, holding one or none by the end. That's when questions come. [27:25] Holly likes people to know that when they're working with kids with chronic illness, it's important to pace out their therapy. For example, give a patient two things to work on until the next time, not ten, to be successful. [28:50] Ryan clusters his multiple specialist annual visits at the start of the fall semester and at the beginning of the spring semester. That means he misses some classes and lectures at the beginning of each semester. It is draining. Tests eat up half his spoons for the day. [30:35] Holly shares how applying the Spoon Theory impacts managing her health. The Spoon Theory helps her create and maintain boundaries. She adamantly tries to stick to a schedule that rarely depletes her spoons per day. It's still a work in progress. Holly has a therapist who is helping her work on it. [31:08] Holly schedules social things on days when she has little to no other obligations. She has to maintain that schedule. She has good days and sometimes great weeks which leads her to add more to her plate, but then she runs out of spoons more quickly because she's borrowing from the next day. Eventually, she has no spoons to borrow. [31:42] Holly went on vacation for her birthday and then last week she was doing great, taking some urgent referrals for babies. This week, she had to cancel things. She is learning that she needs to schedule time to recharge and rest even on good days. [32:26] Holly has learned there are ways to increase your number of spoons. The most important things are to be compliant with treatment and follow a specific diet (if recommended). A lot of chronic illnesses have a specific researched diet to help you stay healthy. When you have a cheat day, you're harming yourself by taking spoons from your next day. [33:31] Working out helps with anxiety and depression. There are physical and mental health benefits. Holly started tracking over the last eight months how many spoons working out earned for her, compared to the spoon it took from her. She finds that it adds three to five spoons to her daily reserve. The endorphins boost her energy. [34:14] Ryan agrees. He goes to the gym at least twice a week. If he misses a day, he feels worse. He goes out for a walk on days he's not going to the gym just to get moving and he feels better after that. Being stuck inside all day is mentally draining as well. Going for a walk takes extra effort but it does feel better. [35:32] Ryan and his mother have similar food allergy issues so they both carefully stick to their diet. If they vary their diets on vacation, even without eating triggers or allergens, they feel physically bad for a few days until they get back to their usual diets. [36:28] Once Holly learned about this theory and was making new contracts, she realized that there may be times when she might have to cancel and reschedule. When she sends an email about an engagement, she includes an article on the Spoon Theory and describes what she is struggling with, in case she has to reschedule. [37:42] The Spoon Theory is a good way to describe to friends or family why the person with the chronic illness isn't hosting the holiday but may need to go to a room and rest at the host's home. It's a tool to inform loved ones and friends so they can be supportive. It's a different way to share our struggles with our chronic illness. [38:27] When Ryan meets people and tells them about his health issues, he might say he has food allergies but then also explain how his conditions lead to a limited supply of energy, and then tell about the Spoon Theory. It's a helpful tool we can all use, going forward. [39:08] Our listeners can learn more about the Spoon Theory by going to Christine Miserandino's website, ButYouDontLookSick.com. [39:47] To learn more about eosinophilic disorders, visit APFED.org. If you're looking for a specialist who treats eosinophilic disorders, use APFED's specialist finder at APFED.org/Specialist. [40:05] To connect with others impacted by eosinophilic diseases, please join APFED's online community on the Inspire Network at APFED.org/Connections. [40:14] Ryan thanks Holly for sharing information about the Spoon Theory. It means a lot to Holly that we have a platform to reach a lot of people. Holly hopes if you are struggling with a chronic illness that you are not alone and you can use this tool to bring your loved ones and friends closer. Maybe weed out the people who aren't helping. [41:15] Holly thanks APFED's education partners, AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi, and Regeneron, linked below, for supporting this episode. [41:26] Ryan shares how he just met his partner's friend and by discussing symptoms while picking a place to eat, it turns out she was diagnosed last year with EoE. The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
Unleashing the Power of AI vs. Human Touch: Which Delivers a Superior Customer Experience? I often say, "None of us are as clever as all of us." However, sayings are more useful when they can spur action. So, we have a proposition for you: If you have something you want to say about experiences or technology, statistics, or reports, feel free to share them via video. To learn more, click here. To that end, Tom Martin, CEO at Glance, has submitted one about AI. Tom makes an excellent point. As we develop AI into our systems, we will need to determine what AI will replace, what it will augment, and what it will add. AI presents opportunities to shift some routine tasks from human employees to virtual ones. However, shifting of tasks should mean reducing head count. Instead, AI should be a way to help employees pay more attention to the needs of customers. Moreover, we should be realistic about the power of AI. It isn't magic; it can't solve all our problems. What it can do is be a powerful tool that we can leverage and develop over time. We have been here before, too. I had a system that was going to be the best thing that ever happened to my organization 20 years ago. That was the fantasy. The reality was quite different. And let's not forget the internet. It took years for it to be what it is today. AI will likely follow a similar path. In this episode we explore the points made by Tom in his video along with our take on AI and Customer Experiences. Perhaps most importantly, we implore organizations to remember that AI doesn't replace your employees; it enhances what they can do for customers. Here are some other key moments in the discussion: 04:28 We listen to Tom's video and why he thinks leading with humans creates a better AI strategy. 09:48 Both Ryan and Colin share their thoughts about AI and the next frontier of business, including Colin's frustrations with the phrase, “high call volumes at the moment.” 18:10 Colin shares a story about a new system implementation program that didn't live up to his hopes and dreams for it 20 years ago, and how that applies to organization implementation with AI. 20:23 Ryan explains the Hype Cycle and how it applies to the implementation and adoption of AI. 26:50 We both share out thoughts about the future of AI in organization and what you should take away from the discussion. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing the near epic collapse in Boulder where the Trojans had a 41-14 lead and had to hold on and recover an onsides kick to escape with a 48-41 victory. Ryan was at Folsom Field for the game and the 100 year old stadium had some issues trying to accommodate the over 1,000 media requests, the most for a game in CU history. The Coach Prime effect is real and while the Buffaloes media relations people tried their best, the program grew too much and too fast to handle the wave of publicity that Deion Sanders brought to Boulder. The game itself was unsatisfying for everyone, USC fans were upset that the defense failed to slow down Colorado late in the game and Buffs fans saw a chance for victory fall just short. Coach Hyde talks about how winning is the most important thing, but you want to be able to be proud of your performance and it would be hard to do that after this game. Both Coach and Ryan got Cotton Bowl vibes from this one, with Colorado nearly duplicating the improbable comeback Tulane had back in January. Coach feels USC got lucky to get out of there with a win after dominating early before everything went to heck. He also felt it was a shame no one was talking about Caleb Williams and his 403 yard, 6 touchdown performance, because the defense was so bad. Williams through five games has 24 total touchdowns and last season at this time he only had 15. The majority of the episode discusses USC's defensive struggles and Coach Hyde thinks opposing offenses are doing a good job of exploiting the Trojans weaknesses, luring defenders up before hitting them over the top for explosive plays. There are a lot of areas for concern but Coach specifically talks about the excessive cushion given in the red zone being one of the major flaws. He also thinks tackling is still a big problem as well as the inside linebacker play. He wants to see more people flying around to the football and he sees guys that aren't and wants to know why others are not in there showing what they can do. Most importantly Coach wants to see Lincoln Riley get more personally involved in this defense and address some of the deficiencies. He would also like to see offensive analyst Kliff Kingsbury get involved and do some self scouting of the defense and tell Alex Grinch where he thinks the holes are and where improvements can be made. At the end of the day with this collection of talent on defense, the whole is less than the sum of its parts and that is on coaching. Both Ryan and Coach Hyde think USC could have a much better defense with the talent assembled, so it's time to make that happen or get someone who can. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! The parable of the three servants and the talents is used to illustrate the principle of responsibility leading to greater opportunities. The conversation pivots to different levels of success, emphasizing the need to earn the right to achieve desired goals by continually improving and raising personal standards. It's stressed that consistent small wins build confidence and pave the way for significant accomplishments.Taking personal responsibility is another crucial theme, with a strong message against victim mindsets. Faith is also touched upon, highlighting the importance of recognizing support during trials and seeking forgiveness.

Ryan underscores YouTube's unique benefits as it offers a platform for targeted content that doesn't disappear quickly. Levi's strategy focused on consistent, intentional content creation to attract potential clients already searching for his services.Levi's success highlights the value of consistency over viral hits. He stresses the importance of learning for 60 days before diving into a field, balancing research with taking action. His videos foster client relationships, showcasing how content creation is a form of relationship building.Ryan and Levi discuss content creation strategies, favoring repurposing long-form content to create shorter videos. They agree that time invested in refining the initial product pays off in reduced marketing efforts. Friendships with successful individuals prove invaluable as their expertise saves time and contributes to personal growth. Social media, especially platforms like podcasts, enables relationship building, opening doors to new connections. In the context of Ryan's Wealthy Way philosophy, time is seen differently by Levi, who argues that YouTube offers compounding returns on time invested. Both Ryan and Levi emphasize the role of social media in relationship-building and networking. Overall, their conversation underscores the significance of intentional content creation, leveraging platforms like YouTube, and building relationships within the business landscape.
We are focusing on Ryan Steiner, who was highly recommended to me at a previous networking event, as my new guest for this episode. Ryan lives with autism. He is a husband, a parent, an ultramarathon runner, and a supporter of those with disabilities. The vows doctors told his mother would never come true. Both Ryan and his autistic and cerebral palsy daughter Kala enjoy running. Ryan pushes Kala in a customized racing wheelchair across distances ranging from 5k to 50k (31 miles)! Ryan and Kala are on a mission to encourage and celebrate visibility and inclusion. I couldn't agree more with him when he says that "everyone deserves to feel like they belong. "Let's all welcome Ryan to Autism Rocks and Rolls.
In this conversation Ryan and Heidi discuss the transformative power of forgiveness, letting go, and choosing love in order to experience a deeper sense of connection, joy, and personal growth. Here are the main takeaways and key points: Ryan emphasizes that forgiveness is essential for moving beyond obstacles and experiencing a new and different life. It is not about forgiving the other person, but about liberating oneself. They discuss how people tend to hold onto past experiences and allow them to define their lives. By suppressing emotions and not processing the lessons, individuals can relive negative experiences and limit their growth. Heidi shares her own story of betrayal and heartbreak in her first marriage, where she discovered her ex-husband's infidelity and substance abuse. This experience led her to build walls and fear getting hurt again in her subsequent relationship with Ryan. Ryan reveals his battle with depression and anxiety, which affected their relationship. Both Ryan and Heidi were subconsciously manifesting patterns from their past experiences, leading to emotional disconnection and seeking validation outside the relationship. Heidi admits to using external factors like building a perfect house, focusing on fitness, and other external achievements to distract herself from confronting her buried emotions. When Ryan finally confesses his relationship with someone else, Heidi goes through a period of self-pity, feeling victimized. It takes time for her to understand her role in the situation and develop compassion for Ryan's struggle. Despite the challenges, Ryan and Heidi decide to work on themselves individually and save their marriage. They emphasize the importance of personal growth and self-reflection in rebuilding trust and connection. Love is a choice that goes beyond superficial factors or compatibility. It involves seeing someone's heart and choosing them despite their imperfections and mistakes. Letting go of attachments and stories allows for acceptance and opens up the possibility of creating a new and fulfilling future. It puts one back in the driver's seat and leads to self-compassion and deeper understanding. Episode Quotes: "Forgiveness is not about forgiving the other person; it's about liberating yourself." "We hold on to past experiences in a way that we don't allow ourselves to receive the gift of it and learn the lesson." "The lesson will repeat itself until we learn from it." "We were all living a path highly affected by our past experiences until we become consciously aware of them." "The grass is greener on the other side" mindset can prevent true self-growth. "When you put walls up to try to protect yourself... you keep out the connection." "Integration happens... you begin to allow for things to touch you... you allow that to come in and go and pass through you." On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back breaking down what they saw and heard at the USC spring game Saturday in the Coliseum. Both Ryan and Coach Hyde were there taking it all in and they give their biggest takeaways from the game and how this Trojan football team improved during the last six week of spring ball. Starting out with the environment in the Coliseum, Hyde was impressed by the 25,000+ fans that showed up. Everyone was seated on the press box side of the Coliseum and they turned the Pac-12 Network cameras to the far side of the stadium to shoot the side where the crowd was. In order to do that, they also turned around the USC logo at midfield so it was upside down for everyone in the stands. Hyde liked how the halftime Caleb Williams Heisman Trophy presentation went, but he would have loved to have seen something about Reggie Bush getting his Heisman back with the chairman of the Heisman Trust there on the field. Speaking of Williams, he had nothing to prove and only played three plays in the game (going 2 for 2 for 55 yards and a touchdown), but Hyde would have liked to see a little more of him just so the fans in attendance could see the star of the show. He likes how the offensive line looked, saying they are improved and more in place than they were a year ago. The starters from left to right Michael Tarquin, Gino Quinones, Justin Dedich, Jarrett Kingston and Jonah Monheim and Hyde likes the improved depth behind those guys. The running backs were all very impressive, but it gave the coach concern that the defense may still be bad, especially considering the offense averaged over 9 yards per carry. He thinks the offense overall will be even better than last year and he thinks the most impressive newcomer he saw on either side of the ball was former five-star receiver Zachariah Branch. One thing missing was the spark on defense, some head hunters who just go out and make plays and hit people. It still felt to Hyde like the offense was the hammer and the defense was the nail. He feels the defense has a long way to go but overall the talent does look better. At the end of the day, Coach Hyde wants to know if this team is better than last year and better to the point that they can stop some of the top offenses on their schedule like Oregon, Washington, UCLA, Notre Dame and Utah. That is the bar he has set for this team and specifically the defense, can you stop those great offenses you just couldn't stop last year. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back talking about USC kicking off spring football 2023 with Lincoln Riley and the exact same coaching staff but a lot of new faces on both sides of the ball. Both Ryan and Harvey were on campus Sunday for the first spring practice where the media was allowed to attend and the guys were able to check out what the players looked like heading out of the tunnel sporting helmets, jerseys and shoulder pads. They also were able to watch the early team stretching where some special teams drills were going on followed by position drills including tackling by the defensive backs and linebackers. Coach Hyde was hanging out right outside the entrance to Howard Jones Field matching up the numbers with the players as they ran across the street and into the workout. One thing he noticed was that most of the players and coaches keep their eyes straight ahead in a very business-like manner, not looking at or engaging the media that was filming and observing them as they entered practice. Some of the players that caught Hyde's eye were on the offensive line, with Mason Murphy looking bigger and more like a real college offensive tackle along with Florida transfer Michael Tarquin who also stood out. Freshman quarterback Malachi Nelson reminded Coach of one of his former players when he was a freshman, Randall Cunningham, noting that both are/were tall, thin and athletic. He noted that Nelson and Caleb Williams were running side by side like they were handcuffed together. Texas A&M defensive line transfer Anthony Lucas passed the eye test, looking like someone who can contribute right away for the Trojans. He also liked Georgia State rush end transfer Jamil Muhammad, but thought he would be a little taller, and thought Purdue transfer Jack Sullivan passed the eye test. South Carolina running back transfer MarShawn Lloyd looked “studly” to Coach Hyde along with freshman five-star wide receiver Zachariah Branch. My guests for this episode are the film-scoring duo Ryan Miller and Jay Lifton. Ryan is a founding member and the lead singer of Guster, who recently celebrated their 31st consecutive year of touring and recording. He has scored over 15 feature films and has worked with directors Colin Trevorrow, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Lake Bell, and Zoe Lister-Jones. Jay Lifton is a Brooklyn-based composer who has worked with Alicia Silverstone, Kirsten Smith, Sean Baker, Paul Feig, and Errol Morris. He somewhat recently scored an episode of This American Life as well as the documentary RABBLE ROUSERS, which is about the forces behind NYC gentrification and urban displacement. Both Ryan and Jay have great resumes for their work in film and commercials. The pair teamed up to score Reese Witherspoon's film "Something from Tiffany's", which premiered this past holiday season on Prime Video. The film follows the story of a woman as her life gets upended when an engagement ring that was for someone else leads her to the person she's meant to be with. I watched the trailer and was struck by how beautiful it looked. Then, of course, I noticed the music. We talk about "Something from Tiffany's," Guster, their respective journies toward film scoring, the value of attending film festivals, music in video games, and more. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino give their reaction to all of the mostly negative fan reaction to USC head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to retain embattled defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. During a two hour sit down with Riley this week, he told local media that he wanted to keep continuity with the coaching staff and no changes would be made heading into the 2023 football season. Specifically with Grinch, he emphasized that his defenses had some really good performances this season but the consistency wasn't there, especially late in the season. Riley did not want to make a rash, emotional decision based on data from one year. He knows Grinch had great results at previous stops and when he arrived at Oklahoma he turned around a bad defense and Riley is confident that USC's defense will be much improved in 2023. Both Ryan and Chris talk about how upset many USC fans were to learn that Riley was going forward with Grinch. Both hosts understand how the defense was terrible this season, but they also think that Riley took a 4-8 team and rebuilt the roster, won 11 games, won the Heisman Trophy, beat both rivals UCLA and Notre Dame and was a play away from the College Football Playoff. Riley made a lot of good decisions about this football program and both feel that he should be given the benefit of the doubt about the future of this defense. The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
We hope you enjoy today's show. If you do, could vote for us in the People's Choice Podcast Award? It doesn't take long to cast your vote and it would really mean a lot to both Ryan and I. Thanks very much. Cheers! To vote, please click here. Usually, we have one pickle per podcast. However, today's podcast has two pickles per podcast. Sure, it's still The Intuitive Customer Podcast, just now with an extra pickle. Our first pickle comes from Jane, who works at a large business-to-business company. They are implementing a Voice of Customer program to identify critical improvements necessary for the organizations. However, to get the insight they need to make sweeping changes, they need robust data collection. Jane asked us for advice on how to increase their survey response rates to get the data they need, and also how to get the local team to get on board with the data collection process. Our second, extra pickle, comes from Elizabeth, who asks, how is inflation affecting people's ability to buy? Since I am sure that we are all curious about this issue—both as businesses and consumers—we thought we would include this one as a bonus. In this episode, we respond to both Jane and Elizabeth's business pickles. First, we discuss how Jane can increase her response rates to her survey and get the team on board with the new initiative. Then, we dive into research from consumer research firm Attest that tells us a bit about how people feel about inflation and how that is going to affect their customer behavior. Key Ideas to Improve your Customer Experience Previous podcasts might help take a bit of a deeper dive on each of our listener's pickles. We had a podcast, that we produced in partnership with Attest, on the 5 Rules for Customer Research a few weeks ago, which addresses the areas of Jane's pickle. Also, we did an episode recently called, Inflation is Going to Kill My CX, and that addresses some of the ways to respond to inflation in your experience. Here are a few key moments in the discussion: 03:07 We hear the background on Jane's pickle and what their company is trying to do. 06:37 Ryan shares perspective on how you can motivate people to respond to the survey in different ways, and Colin adds that considering who you are asking will also influence how you motivate them. 14:23 Colin explains how communication about how you will use the data you collect and being selective about how often you ask will both boost response rates. 20:44 We learn about Elizabeth's question regarding inflation, and Colin shares interesting statistics that he gleaned from Attest's US inflation sentiment tracker. 24:06 Ryan explains how the way we buy gas might make the feelings about gas prices more painful. 26:08 Both Ryan and Colin share their insights on how organizations can respond to customers that are bombarded with price hikes and personal cutbacks that build relationships instead of destroying them. We produced this podcast in partnership with Attest. Do you have a business pickle? Tell us about it here.
