Welcome back to The DC Beer Show, your hop-forward source for all things craft beer in the DMV! This episode finds our dynamic crew—Jake, Mike, Brandy, and Jordan—diving headfirst into the fascinating world of hops and modern brewing with special guest Shana Solarte, Marketing Communications Manager at John I. Haas.Kicking off with the usual “what's in your glass?” roundtable, the hosts compare notes on a fresh selection of IPAs (with more than one nod to Other Half), a Peabody Heights pilsner, and shout-outs to local beer reps. Brandy brings a little Cinco de Mayo energy, complete with margaritas and hopes for more info on her beer can labels! The heart of the show belongs to Shana, who joins from Chicago—but don't worry, her reach into the DC beer scene runs deep. She shares the inside scoop on John I. Haas' partnership with the Michael James Jackson Foundation (MJF), an organization supporting scholarships for brewers and distillers of color. Shana explains the creative process behind MJF's exclusive hop blend, involving sensory panels, blind tastings, and even a bit of Garrett Oliver Jedi mind-trickery. We hear about how the blend gives back—$5 per pound sold goes straight to MJF, supporting the next wave of brewing talent. The episode shifts gears to demystify the buzz around “flowable hop products.” Shana breaks down what they are (think super-concentrated hop flavor minus the leafy waste), the benefits for brewers (better efficiency, more beer to pour), and how products like Incognito are changing the IPA game—especially with Mosaic fans in the house.Throughout the show, Shana's passion for beer education and inclusivity shines. From her Cicerone roots to her time at Dovetail and Omega Yeast, she emphasizes continual learning and translating geeky hop science into language every beer enthusiast can dig.As always, there's plenty of DC Beer community spirit. Brandy highlights upcoming local events: the Maryland Craft Beer Festival in Frederick (shoutout to female and non-binary brewers!), a DC Brau beer share, and a full calendar for beer lovers all summer long. Mike gives a special mention to the Arlington Brew Shop beer of the month, a Czech pale lager brewed by Bluejacket, and Jacob reminds us that beer is for everyone (moms very much included).Grab a hoppy IPA (or your favorite local lager), settle in, and let The DC Beer Show guide you through innovative hop science, the importance of diversity in brewing, and all that's brewing in our vibrant local beer scene.

Former schoolhouses, farmsteads, gamekeepers lodges, coastguards lookouts and miners bunkhouses, there are around 100 buildings (across Scotland, England and Wales) left open for walkers and climbers to use - free of charge. If you delve into the history of almost any endurance mountain running challenge in the UK you will likely see the name John Fleetwood. Usually flying under the radar solo and unsupported, his website www.longdistancechallenges.blogspot.com reveals a plethora of epic mountain adventures in the wild trackless bounds of Scotland, England and Wales. John first became 'hooked' on endurance runs in the late 90s following his 'first proper run' - the 100km Bob Graham Round. Long before the current boom in ultra running and 'FKTs' he was having intense experiences as he sought to bring dream lines on a map into reality by following them on the ground. More interested in 'first known completions' than speed itself, he has made huge aesthetic loops in wild places. A winter Broxap Round in Glen Shiel over 120km and 61hrs; the Glen Lyon Watershed, a 121km 47hr loop of rough grass, bog and heather; or the Strathfarrar Watershed, 99km over 50hrs in deep snow. We talk in more detail about John's Scottish Haute Route walk, his Lakes 40 Peaks at 40yrs challenge, and his mind bending Winter Rigby Round - a 54hr odyssey around the dark December Cairngorms in 2010. John is also an author of two Cicerone guides to Scrambles in the Lake District. His book Beyond the View is his 'pilgrimage through nature', a hardback photography book interlaced with his personal story and deep connections to these wild places. Seeing 'beyond the view' is about connecting with our surroundings in a deeper way. He has also worked with Big Issue vendors in a project which gave them new access to outdoor experiences. He hopes to set up a charity further expanding this work which aims to heal the disconnect many people (and arguably society as a whole) feels for nature. John is speaking at Kendal Mountain Festival next week (Sunday 24th November 2024)

Kristin's debut novel, Elizabeth Sails (Rising Action Publishing Co/Simon & Schuster), launched two days ago. What can be better than discussing with the author the use of an actual cruise ship, The Queen Elizabeth, as a setting.  Kristin told me, “After living in Europe, my husband and I moved back to the USA on the Queen Mary 2. The voyage was a life-changing experience. Ten years later, I've got my sea legs. Which happen to be a little chunkier because I've taken a fair number of cruises and haven't missed a single meal. And I've finagled a way of sailing more frequently – as a speaker. I entertain and educate passengers on writing, literature, and wine. So, I can't feel too guilty because hey, I'm working, people. I spend about six months on ships and get my best writing done onboard. It's like a quintessential writing retreat. With tea and scones daily at 3:30pm. To date, I've taken over a dozen cruises (300+ days) as a passenger and over a dozen as a speaker.”  Kristen has experience sailing with Princess, Celebrity, Cunard and Viking. In addition to all that, she also offers guided beer tastings and consulting through her company, The Brewery Log. Sandy recently made a major career change, moving from project management roles in tech to the beer biz. She's a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) – every company in every industry needs strong project managers! Sandy took a very thoughtful approach to her career change, her plan included passing the Certified Cicerone® exam in order to gain beer knowledge and to strengthen her résumé. As a woman entering what has, at least in recent history, been a male dominated industry, Sandy wanted that leg up. She points out that learning about beer (or anything you're super interested in) is fun, so preparing for the Cicerone exams wasn't exactly an unpleasant process! She used both the Cicerone® Program's Road to Cicerone® material and Beer Scholar to help her prepare. In particular, she found the Beer Scholar practice exams to be critical for testing her knowledge and for lowering her exam anxiety when she took the real exam. Sandy reached out to me about coming on the “Meet a Cicerone®” show, noting there hadn't yet been a woman Cicerone® featured on it for the first few episodes. I was very aware of that issue as well and I was stoked to bring Sandy on for a chat! Jesús Mártir is the first "graduate" of the Beer Scholar Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program! About nine months ago, AC Scott Fielder and I launched our Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program, the first of its kind, with an initial cohort of ten amazing beer geeks from all over the world and all over the beer industry. Jesús is the first of the bunch to pass the exam and get the title of Advanced Cicerone® on his resume! Huge congrats to Jesús! Jesús is based in Tijuana, Mexico. He's an electromechanical engineer by training and says, "what is brewing if not applied engineering?" He entered the beer industry in 2017 and spent several years brewing for Kaminari Brewing. He thought he was out of the beer game for a period...but a friend at Baja Canning pulled him back in with a great job offer! Jesús is currently the Operations Manager at Baja Canning in Tijuana, where he's managed the packaging of nearly 3 million beers to date! Jesús passed the Certified Cicerone® exam in late 2022 and passed the Advanced Cicerone® exam in early 2024, after going through our AC Coaching Program. Jesús is also a BJCP Certified beer, cider, and mead judge, an American Cider Association Certified Cider Guide, and he's got an Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) General Certificate in Beer Packaging, Can Specialist. Not only all that...phew, I'm running out of breath over here....Jesús is currently pursuing a Master's in Brewing and Distilling from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling in Scotland! Basically, Jesús is an absolute superstar. He's been traveling all over Central and South American to judge major beer competitions and he's now one of just five Spanish speaking Advanced Cicerones® in the world – though we're expecting to see several more Spanish speaking ACs come out of our coaching program in the next year! Scott & I sat down with Jesús to talk about his experience in the Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program, his career path, and what fuels his drive for knowledge. If you're thinking about pursuing some certifications in the booze biz, and especially if you're wondering about going for the AC, listen up! The “Meet a Cicerone” podcast is about sitting down with folks who are “all in on beer” to understand why folks do it, how they're applying what they learn, and how it has enabled them to make their own futures and careers. Let's do this. P.S. If you're interested in becoming an Advanced Cicerone in the easiest and most efficient way possible, please reach out to me at chris@thebeerscholar.com or Scott at scott@thebeerscholar.com right away so we can start getting you ready to join the next cohort of the Beer Scholar Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program! Thanks so much for listening! –Chris Get a free Study Guide for the Certified Cicerone® Exam here: https://www.thebeerscholar.com/certified-cicerone-study-guide

Today on THE ROCK FIGHT (an outdoor podcast that aims for the head) we are excited to debut a new weekly segment...GEAR & BEER!This is reviewing gear, THE ROCK FIGHT way because largely speaking gear reviews have become pretty boring. There's rarely a 'so what' in these reviews because stuff mostly works. So Colin and Justin are here to throw rocks at the status quo and approach gear reviews the same way we approach most things: Through the types of conversations we have when out riding, skiing, surfing or hanging out at the trailhead...only this time on a podcast. Each week one of us will bring forth a piece of gear: a shoe, some apparel, a suitcase, sleeping bag, kayak, a pot or a pan…whatever, to review and then because we make way too much stuff these days, we'll rank it on the STUFF-O-METER (listen to learn about the STUFF-O-METER).Lastly certified Cicerone (which means certified beer guy) Justin Housman will pair the perfect beverage with the gear and activity we talked about. First up, the Kona Unit X and Founders Brewery All Day IPA.Please follow and subscribe to THE ROCK FIGHT and give us a 5 star rating wherever you get your podcasts.Have a question or comment for a future mailbag episode? In my time in and around the beer industry, I've heard too many people underestimate the Cicerone Certification Program, a worldwide standard for recognizing people who are experts in  beer sales and service. While I haven't taken it myself, I understand the rigorous studying that's required to pass the written and tasting exam to become a Certified Cicerone, just the second level of a four-part process to become a Master Cicerone. And even those who take the test seriously aren't guaranteed to pass it the first time. But don't take my word for it, let's hear from an expert. In this episode, Jen Blair, who recently became a Master Cicerone—the highest level of certification and a title just 28 people in the world hold today—shares details from her almost decade-long journey to reach this pinnacle. If you're interested in becoming a Cicerone, this episode is for you. But even if you're not planning to take these tests, you'll learn so much about what it means to explore beer, its history, and all the sensory experiences it can provide. There's a personal side to it all, too, and you'll hear from Jen about the importance of learning from your mistakes, honoring deadlines, and creating realistic schedules.  As a straight-A student, Jen thought she knew how to study for the Cicerone tests, but realized that to pass even the first level exam she had to go beyond memorization and fully master the material. Throughout the episode, Jen shares some of the shifts in mindset she had to make to cross the Master Cicerone finish line, including relearning how to learn and strengthening her weak areas instead of ignoring them, like memorizing commercial styles despite disagreeing with the requirement. Listen in until the end to hear about the inspiration behind her newsletter, get tips on palate training and health, as well as what Jen is focused on now that she's completed her Cicerone journey.

Subscribe to Behind The Pursuit: From Bourbon to Brand We've talked for awhile now that as we've been bringing people in for tastings and experiences at the distillery, and it has been an amazing time to bring people in, that Kenny and Ryan have lead all those experiences. As fun as that is, it isn't scalable to the business for that to always take place and we needed people to be an extension of Kenny and Ryan. People who can speak on their behalf, know the product, and can show folks a great time when they visit.  As a fan suggestion to the podcast, today we are going to meet the new additions to the crew: Joe, Sarah, and Tim. There are so many directions we went with this episode, so don't miss a minute of it.  We hit on: What is everyone's back story?  How did everyone get into the industry?  What led you to bourbon specifically?  What does it look like to go through the University of Louisville's Distilled Spirits program? How does Joe feel about being the most advanced Cicerone in Kentucky?  Is there something about the brand, the guys, or the whiskey that surprised you about Pursuit Spirits?  and much more.
