During his summers, he worked on fishing boats in Alaska, a lucrative yet exhausting and dangerous job for a teenager. As he spent his days fishing, Skewes dreamed of becoming a professional sailor. This ambition led him to find work as a sailmaker and move to San Diego, where he could fully pursue his craft and passion. In his long career as a professional sailor, Skewes has won multiple national and regional championship titles across a variety of sailing classes. Let’s Talk Dubs

First came the "Bug Eye" Baja kit, pioneered by Miller-Havens and helping launch a whole new look for off-road Volkswagens. But the evolution of the Baja Bug was just getting started. After finding success with the Sandwinder dune buggy, Don Rountree and R&H Fiberglass turned their attention to fiberglass bodywork for the Volkswagen Beetle. Around 1972, Sandwinder introduced what would become one of the most recognizable Baja Bug designs of the era—the "Wide Eye" Baja kit. Instead of mounting the headlights close together in the nose like the earlier Bug Eye kits, the Wide Eye moved them outward into the fenders, creating the classic Baja look that would influence countless builds for decades. But there's a lot more to the story. On this episode of Let's Talk Dubs, we dig into the history behind Sandwinder and the people responsible for developing these early fiberglass kits. We hear how a sponsorship helped open the door, how the success of the Sandwinder buggy led to new opportunities, and how Burly became involved in designing everything from a '32 Ford-inspired kit to the now-iconic Wide Eye Baja kit. It's a fascinating piece of early Volkswagen off-road, dune buggy, and Baja Bug history, from the days when builders were experimenting with fiberglass and creating designs that would permanently change the look of the VW Beetle. If you're into vintage Baja Bugs, Sandwinder buggies, early fiberglass VW kits, desert racing, off-road Volkswagens, or the history of the Southern California VW scene, this episode fills in an important chapter of how the Baja Bug evolved from the original Bug Eye into the Wide Eye design we still recognize today. www.vwtrendsmagazine.com www.rosswulf.com www.hotvws.com www.letstalkdubs.com

What happens when the mission changes, but the drive to keep moving forward remains?Combat Vet Vision welcomes Giovanni Perez, a retired U.S. Army combat engineer, wounded veteran, adaptive motorcycle and off-road competitor, and veteran advocate whose post-service journey has taken him from Afghanistan to some of the toughest terrain in off-road racing.Giovanni lost his left arm while serving with the Army in Afghanistan. After returning home, motorcycles became more than recreation. Through adaptation, determination and the veteran community, riding became another place to find challenge, camaraderie and purpose.Giovanni has competed in desert and off-road events including the Baja 500, Baja 1000 and Vegas to Reno. His adaptive riding includes motorcycle modifications that allow him to ride with a prosthetic left arm. In the 2018 Baja 1000, he was part of a six-rider team that officially finished the legendary event. His story also extends beyond racing. Giovanni has been connected with the Warrior Built Foundation, an organization serving combat veterans and wounded service members through vocational and recreational opportunities, including fabrication, mechanics and off-road racing. He has also participated in Wounded Warrior Project advocacy activities supporting issues affecting post-9/11 veterans. In this episode, we explore:• How the combat-engineer mindset can translate into adapting to life after a major injury• The transition from military service to finding a new mission• Returning to motorcycles after losing his left arm• Adaptive riding and the challenge of desert and off-road competition• The role of camaraderie, machines and racing in rebuilding purpose• Why continuing to serve and advocate for other veterans mattersThis conversation is not simply about overcoming an injury. It is about adaptation, teamwork and discovering that purpose can take a different form when the original mission changes.GuestGiovanni PerezRetired U.S. Army Combat EngineerWounded Veteran | Adaptive Motorcycle & Off-Road Competitor | Veteran AdvocateGuest LinksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/giovanni.perez.353803LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/giovanni-perez-54847797Instagram (@oggio31): https://www.instagram.com/oggio31/Warrior Built Foundation: https://www.warriorbuilt.org/Featured ResourceDrive On, Echo Bravo ProductionsA documentary project following combat veterans competing in the Baja 1000.https://echobravoproductions.com/drive-onCrisis SupportIf you or a veteran you know is in crisis, contact the Veterans Crisis Line. “A secret spot in Baja California, hundreds of miles from civilization. An old milk van converted into the perfect surfing mobile. A 67-year-old man, at the peak of his physical fitness and in line with Mother Nature every step of the way. “The Bull” is the award-winning story of San Diego surfing legend Glen Horn and his journey to an unconventional lifestyle."On today's Slow Baja, we're in conversation with Documentary Filmmaker Eric Ebner, as he discusses his path to becoming a filmmaker and making "The Bull" his film on surfer Glen Horn. The tale picks up as Ebner and a friend quit their jobs, divested themselves of their worldly possessions, packed up a 1992 Toyota 4Runner with their surfboards, camp gear, guitar, and headed south for what they knew would be an epic, life-changing surf trip. After a disastrous first day that saw their trusty 4Runner broken down on the side of the road two hours south of Ensenada, a transformative experience followed, opening Ebner's eyes to the beautiful culture of kindness among the rural people of Baja.Humbled and uplifted, Ebner continued his quest for waves, eventually settling into a surf camp in Baja Sur where he met 67-year-old Glen Horn. Horn was the camp “OG” and lived for months at a time, off-grid, in his bright red vintage camper-made from a converted bread van. A fascination with Horn's unconventional but harmonious life led Ebner to begin following and filming the surfer-steward-in-residence of this remote surf break.Ebner's film, The Bull, was the result of that endeavor. It went on to stack up awards in scores of film festivals, including: Winner- “Best Picture” Short Film Category- Carolina Surf Film Festival Winner- “Best Documentary” Short Film Category- Florida Surf Film FestivalWinner- “Audience Award”- Portuguese Surf Film FestivalWinner- “Filmmaker Award, Audience Appreciation” - Save the Waves Film Festival TourEbner has gone on to a career in filmmaking and has made several films. Building real community as an adult is quietly one of the hardest things about modern life, and it gets harder when you're Childfree. The friends you assumed would always be around get busy, have kids, or move away, and one day you look up and realize the built-in social life adulthood promised never actually arrived. Maddy Roche sits down with four people who got tired of waiting and built the communities they couldn't find. Kari Cardinale of the Modern Elder Academy, Florence Wlodarski of Parallel Social Club, and Charlie and Ali Higgins of DINK Social each started from the same quiet ache, wanting people whose weekends were free and whose lives looked like theirs, and turned it into something thousands have now joined. Underneath it all sits a striking finding: the single biggest predictor of a long life is not diet or exercise, but the quality of the friendships you build in midlife. In This Episode, You'll Learn:Why finding your people gets harder in your 40s and beyond, the specific friction points that make adult friendship so difficult, and how these community builders designed around every one of themHow three very different organizations approach the same need, from a midlife wisdom school to an in-person social club to an app built specifically for Childfree couplesWhy the first hangout is only the entry point, and how structured, smaller gatherings create the deeper "third vault" conversations that actually bond people togetherWhat it takes for an introvert to walk into a new community and get the most out of it, including why small, vetted, interest-based groups beat big networking-style eventsThe 80-year Harvard finding that the quality of your midlife friendships predicts a long life more than diet or exercise, and why that reframes community as a health priorityEpisode Guests:Kari Cardinale is a partner and Chief Content Officer at MEA (Modern Elder Academy), a midlife wisdom school with campuses in Baja, Mexico, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, plus a digital campus and an alumni community of 8,000 people across 60 countries, all built around navigating midlife and building new friendships.MEA (Modern Elder Academy): meawisdom.comFlorence Wlodarski is the co-founder of Parallel Social Club, a social wellness community in Los Angeles built for DINKs, SINKs, Childfree, and childless adults. Some retreat lessons never go out of style. In this Throwback Thursday episode of The Retreat Leaders Podcast, Shannon Jamail revisits one of her favorite conversations with Chelle Swierz, founder of Topia Boutique Retreat Center in Baja California Sur, Mexico. While marketing trends, AI, and visibility strategies continue to evolve, the core principles of creating exceptional retreat experiences remain the same. In this conversation, Chelle shares the common mistakes she sees retreat leaders make—and many of them are still happening today. From poor guest preparation and choosing the wrong retreat dates to relying too heavily on social media instead of building genuine relationships, this episode is packed with timeless wisdom for retreat leaders. Shannon and Chelle also discuss: The importance of over-communicating with retreat guests Why trust is built long before a retreat begins How venue partnerships can elevate the guest experience Common planning mistakes that impact retreat success The power of personal connection over social media marketing Creating memorable and transformational retreat experiences If you're planning a retreat, struggling to fill one, or simply want to improve the experience you create for your guests, this episode is as relevant today as it was when it first aired. What You'll Learn in This Episode Common retreat hosting mistakes Why guest preparation matters How to choose better retreat dates The importance of clear communication Why relationships still outperform algorithms How retreat venues can support retreat leaders Creating an exceptional retreat guest experience Key Takeaways Retreat Success Starts Before Guests Arrive The guest experience begins long before check-in. Communication, preparation, and expectation-setting matter. Social Media Isn't Enough People may discover you online. But trust is built through relationships and conversations. Over-Communication Is a Good Thing Guests appreciate clarity. The more prepared they feel, the better their experience. Venue Partnerships Matter The right venue partner can dramatically improve the retreat experience for both leaders and guests. Authenticity Always Wins Clear, honest communication about what guests can expect leads to better experiences and stronger reviews. About Chelle Swierz Chelle Swierz is a longtime yoga instructor and founder of Topia Boutique Retreat Center in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Topia was created to support retreat leaders through every stage of the retreat process, helping them create meaningful experiences while building strong community connections. About Topia Boutique Retreat Center (00:02:22) Shelly describes her full-service retreat center, Topia, which she co-owns with her husband, and its mission to support leaders. Different Levels of Venue Service (00:03:19) Shannon and Shelly discuss the spectrum of venue services, from 100% self-service to fully supported, all-inclusive models like Topia. Biggest Mistake: Not Knowing Your Community (00:05:20) Shelly explains the most common mistake is not knowing if you have a community that is willing and able to travel. Social Media Following vs. Real Community (00:08:16) A large social media following doesn't guarantee retreat sign-ups; genuine, personal relationships and trust are what fill retreats. The Importance of Strategic Planning (00:12:23) Discussion on giving yourself enough time to market, building community, and the benefits of partnering with another leader. Mistake #2: Choosing Dates Unwisely (00:14:35) Shelly warns against scheduling local retreats before international ones, as it can cannibalize sign-ups for the bigger trip. Considering Demographics, Weather, and Holidays (00:17:54) The importance of considering your audience's schedule, holidays, and the location's weather when selecting retreat dates is discussed. Best Practice: Over-Communicate with Guests (00:20:50) Shelly highlights the importance of preparing guests thoroughly through emails, Zoom calls, and clear itineraries to ensure a smooth experience. The Power of One-on-One Calls (00:23:40) Shannon emphasizes having quick one-on-one calls with each guest to review details and answer personal questions before the retreat. More About Topia Retreat Center (00:26:30) Shelly describes Topia's beautiful location in Baja California Sur and its focus on caring for and supporting retreat leaders.

Could the largest shark that ever lived still be swimming our oceans? Scientists say the megalodon disappeared approximately 3.6 million years ago. Yet for more than a century, experienced fishermen, sailors, explorers, and divers have reported seeing sharks so enormous they defied explanation. In this episode of Dark Outdoors, Chester Moore investigates the enduring legend of the megalodon. From Zane Grey's famous encounter in the South Pacific to Australia's mysterious giant shark reports, the legend of Baja's "Black Demon," and other intriguing eyewitness accounts, we separate documented history from maritime myth. But if these witnesses weren't seeing a living megalodon...what were they seeing? Chester explores the remarkable reality of giant great white sharks, including the legendary catches of Frank Mundus and the famous Deep Blue, along with whale sharks, basking sharks, and the surprising discovery of the megamouth shark—a species science didn't even know existed until 1976. Combining firsthand experience swimming with great white sharks, interviews with leading shark experts, and an investigative approach grounded in science, this episode examines one of the ocean's greatest mysteries while asking a deeper question: Why do stories of giant sharks refuse to disappear? Whether you're fascinated by sharks, cryptozoology, ocean mysteries, or the unexplained, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Topics Covered: Could megalodon still exist? Zane Grey's giant shark encounter The Australian giant shark reports The Black Demon of Baja Frank Mundus and legendary great whites Deep Blue and the world's biggest documented white sharks Whale sharks, basking sharks, and megamouth sharks Why giant shark sightings continue to be reported Follow Dark Outdoors for more investigations into wildlife, true crime, history, conservation, and the unexplained where the natural world meets mystery.

Recorded: July 7th 2026 | Welcome back to another episode of Racin’ With The Boys. This week we have two lifelong friends, Riley Herbst and Zane Smith. The guys immediately get into their friendship and what it like growing up with Noah Gragson. They get into how they started racing through Baja racing in the dessert to then moving to North Carolina to get into NASCAR. Riley and Zane get into their offseason hobbies including heading back home to do some more Baja racing. They talk about how dangerous it is with the fans surrounding the track without any fence. Which then brings up the conversation of what is the sketchiest/scariest track on the NASCAR circuit, the answer may surprise you. Finally, the boys end the pod with our “one word to describe the driver segment”. This opens a whole can of worms as Zane opens up as to why he doesn’t like Carson Hocevar. He talks about some of their run-ins with each other and why they have a rivalry.
