Show Notes:Welcome back to Turn Left at the Cactus, the podcast where we explore life, culture, and community in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico.Today's guest is someone who truly embodies the spirit of this town — Jackie Kamasho. Jackie was born just up the road in Mexicali but has lived her entire life here in San Felipe. A proud mother of three and a grandmother, Jackie has roots that run deep through this community. She's worn many hats over the years — teacher, cultural coordinator, postal worker, even a brewery employee — all while raising her family and earning a degree in communications from UABC. Her story is one of resilience, joy, and heart. What makes Jackie's story especially compelling for our expat and snowbird listeners is the perspective she offers — someone who has seen San Felipe grow from a small fishing village to a bustling blend of locals and foreigners. Jackie talks openly about the challenges of raising children with specialneeds, renovating a home downtown, and the deep gratitude she feels toward the foreign community that she says has "helped increase our quality of life."She's insightful, funny, and completely unfiltered. Whether you've just arrived in San Felipe or have been wintering here for years, Jackie's stories — from fish taco favorites to advice on blending into Mexican culture — are full of warmth and wisdom.Stick around — you don't want to miss this conversation. Thanks for listening!Cal Whedbee/Producer & Co-HostTricia Sikes/Co-Host & Thematic Music Coordinator Linda Wiggins & Marnie Ross/Research & HWN (Help Where Needed)Support this podcast with a propina: https://www.ko-fi.com/turnleftatthecactus

Mike and Kenny review the Summer action blockbuster F1: The Movie starring Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, and Kerry Condon and directed by Joseph Kosinski. Pitt stars as race car driver Sonny Hayes, who is invited to join an F1 team despite a 30 year absence from the F1 circuit following a traumatic crash. The team's owner, Ruben Cervantes (Bardem) drove with Hayes when he was a rookie and is desperate for his team to show success or else he will lose it. Part of Hayes's impact on the team needs to be mentoring the team's rookie sensation but yet to be successful driver, Joshua Pearce (Idris.) Produced by Jerry Bruckeimer and Apple Studios, F1 The Movie included scenes shot during F1 on location at several Grand Prixs, the British, Italian, Las Vegas, Japan and Abu Dhabi. Faith Spotted: The place and necessity of Community: I Corinthians 12, the Body of Christ consists of many parts, all of which are vital and dependent on one another. Such dependency requires trust and faith in each other. As Christ had total faith in God, discisples of Jesus must also have faith in the God's redemptive power and in the new life promised in Christ. This is reflected in F1 in all the members of the team, from the owner, drivers, and all crew members. Without everyone working together the team fails. Living in Community requires Humility. As Paul teaches in Philippians 2 all persons of faith are called to imitate the humility of Christ. As Jesus did not use his position as God to gain attention, power, and to be served, but rather to serve God and others, discipleship of Christ calls for persons to be humble and use talents and other blessings of God in the service of God and others. Hayes, Pearce, and others in the film are challenged to reign in their ego's and desires for personal fame and glory in order for the team to win and all to be successful. Over coming Adversity, Failure and Fear: Faith in God's love, grace, and the promise of new life, allows us the freedom to struggle against adversity and the fear of failure. The teaching and life example of Jesus calls us to live out of faith rather than in the midst fear because God cherishes all people for who they are, God's children, not for what they accomplish. Calling, Purpose, and Passion: Sonny Hayes was born to race. It doesn't matter if he was racing in the glamorous world of the F1 circuit or isolated Baja races. In contrast Joshua Pearce saw racing as a means to an end, glory, wealth, popularity. Pursuing his purpose and passion rather than the perks of success enabled Hayes to find joy in all circumstances. Children of God are called to discover their purpose and use the gifts and blessings that God offers that drive that purpose.

You can contact me here: rick@ricksaez.com Show Notes Why Some of My Best Stories Are About Not Catching Fish (and Why Editors Still Say Yes) What Happened: I didn't grow up out West. I grew up in a shipbuilding town where “outdoorsy” meant mowing the lawn. So you can imagine the culture shock when I moved to Wyoming. Suddenly, public land was everywhere, the rivers were full of trout, and I had this wild idea to write a poem about duck stamps and send it to Gray's Sporting Journal. Back then, submissions weren't digital. I had to physically print the thing, drive to the post office, buy a stamp, and drop it in a mailbox. It felt like time travel. But lo and behold, they wrote me back. Not a rejection. Not silence. A real, live editor wrote back. And that one little poem opened the floodgates. I started pitching stories. I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew how to tell the truth. Not the glossy, influencer kind of truth—more like “I went fishing, caught nothing, but had a spiritual epiphany about life and Labrador Retrievers” kind of truth. Turns out, those are the stories that stick. Principle: The biggest myth in outdoor storytelling? That you need epic wins to earn a voice. You don't. You need honest stories—ones that carry the smell of pine, the sound of bugling elk at 2 a.m., and the feeling of wrestling a kayak into submission while your dog watches, judging. Real stories about imperfect trips and imperfect people—those are the ones that resonate. That's how you connect. That's how you build a community. And that's how you create something editors actually want to publish. Transition: But here's the rub—most aspiring outdoor storytellers are waiting for their “perfect” moment before they write. They think they need the big trophy, the remote trip, the Instagram-worthy fish. Meanwhile, the real stories—the good ones—are sitting right in front of them, getting ignored. That's why: That's why this episode with Dave Zobe is a masterclass in grounded, gritty, authentic outdoor storytelling. We dig into the messy, beautiful reality of writing what you know—dog hair, bad Spanish, missed shots and all—and why that's what truly moves readers. Call to Action: If you've been waiting for your story to be “epic enough” before you tell it, you're missing the point. Listen to this episode now and learn how to turn your everyday outdoor life into stories that sell—and connect—with real people. Follow Dave: https://linktr.ee/davezoby

In 1940, author John Steinbeck and Marine biologist Ed Ricketts chartered the 80' fishing boat, "Western Flyer," for a tidepooling expedition into the Gulf of Californaia. And while many important scientific discoveries were made, the lasting impact of the trip came from the philosophical revelations entered into the ship's log, passages that inspired the thought-provoking book, "The Log of the Sea of Cortez." Following the charter, the boat served for decades as a fishing and expedition vessel, then predictably faded into obscurity. Now completely refurbished and following a recent expedition in Baja, the Flyer is reigniting a spark of awe and wonder to the many people - host Eric Rankin among them - who consider the book it inspired as one of the most deeply profound and enlightening exposés regarding the human condition ever written. Join Eric, Michelle and guest, Sarah Beck as Eric shares his experience of recently visiting the Flyer in person and reads several of his all time favorite passages from the book.

There's an old philosophical paradox: if you give a hard Mountain Dew to a special ed student…does anyone get fired? What if they do it three times? It's a question that's troubled scholars for ages.
