POPULARITY
Episode Notes We aren't trying to be deliberately vague, there genuinely is a category of cryptid called "White Things". What is it exactly? A shapeshifter? An albino wolf? Now what the everloving heck is Sheepsquatch? Game designer, editor and journalist Brie Sheldon (Turn, Let me Take a Selfie, and more) joins us to discuss these bloodthirsty and maybe cute (?) creatures with the world's vaguest name. Join Blaine as he interviews Brie Sheldon about Brie's amazing game Turn, on Kickstarter now! Brie and Blaine talk about Turn, cryptids, how to guide people to the stories your game should tell, and foods covered in french fries. http://tinyurl.com/turnks
On this special bonus episode, we sit down with Brie Sheldon, creator of the Turn slice of life, supernatural RPG, to shine a quick spotlight on the game and get a rundown of what sorts of characters we can expect to create in this system. On this episodes of Gamer Friends, your hosts are tackling a metric ton of news (which is pretty unusual for this time of year, tbh). First up “Logging On,” we’re talking Activision’s earnings diss to Bungie, all the Nintendo Direct news, several new game launches including Sims 4: Get Famous, Fallout 76, and Hitman 2, the class action lawsuit against Riot Games, the legendary Prima Game Guides shuttering, an update to the Blizzcon drama, no Sony at #E32019, and finally, the Game Awards.“These Past Two Weeks in Nerdom,” we have to pour one out for the big homie, Stan Lee. Then, we tackle a few news items related to his legacy, including Daredevil S3 and the upcoming Disney streaming service character shows.Instead of “The Homescreen” this week (we’re still playing Assassin’s Creed, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Destiny: Forsaken), we’ve got a long-form interview with indie tabletop game developer Brie Sheldon (@briecs) to discuss their upcoming game, Turn. It was quite the insightful interview and one you will not want to miss!Thank you for listening! We appreciate the support. Please rate and review if you like the show and we’ll see you all in two weeks!Relevant Links:The Game Awards NomineesInside the Culture of Sexism at Riot GamesDiablo 4 Announcement Pulled from BlizzconTurn’s Kickstarter PageBrie’s Blog, Thoughty
Brie Sheldon returns to talk about Turn, their game about shapeshifters in a small town. We look at destructive & deconstructive approaches to PbtA, as well as why the small-town setting is so integral to the play experience.
Brie Sheldon comes on the show to talk about their new game, Turn. You can find Turn on Kickstarter at tinyurl.com/TurnKS
Brie Sheldon and I struggle with our inner beasts as we take a look at both Mind Your Manners and Be Understood from their game Turn. These moves represent how characters handle the instincts of their beast and human selves as they attempt to navigate their everyday lives. Mechanically these moves can contribute to Exposure, leading characters closer to being revealed as shapeshifters and provide a springboard for endless narrative opportunities. We also talk about the GM principles in Turn and how they contribute to addressing character struggles. Brie stops by and we feel the love! We talk about his amazing Kickstarter that is happening right now, the Behind the Masc Zine! So go support it and help […]
Behind the Masc in a game zine looking to re-envision masculinity through the eyes of non-cisgender masculine creators. Brie Sheldon, the project lead, and Tracy Barnett, one of the contributors, join me to talk about what's in the zine and why it's so important. Behind the Masc is on Kickstarter right now!
We had occasion to talk to game designer, and fellow interviewer; Brie Sheldon. We talked about what motivates them to create, why they interview people, and Brie even gave us some ideas for Two Sided Quest! We also tried out some slight modifications to our intro.
Let’s talk about how we talk about game designs. Let’s talk about how a game does its thing and how a design achieves (or doesn’t) its selected goals. What is your game about and how is it about it? Let’s do that by talking about variations on the “Big Three” questions of RPG design. The audio in this early episode is, uh, unpolished. Thankfully, writer, interviewer, and friend of the show, Brie Sheldon, stepped up to transcribe this episode, so you can read that transcript now, too! We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Jared Sorensen in these show notes so that you can google him and read more of him. Design Games is made possible by our supporters at Patreon, where you can back NDP and Will right now. Every dollar helps.
