In which John, Jess, and their guest, Stephen Dewey, discuss the design his game To Serve Her Wintry Hunger. Together they dive into the magic of games built around evocative questions and emotional pacing. Stephen shares how he uses rules to do the heavy lifting and reinforce the emotional weight of the story. Along the way, they explore emotional cadence, the reliability of tightly written rules, and how mechanics can echo dread, wonder, and everything in between.Check out John's new podcast: Zombie StrainsContact Us!splatbookpod@gmail.comThe Splatphone!Roll For TopicFollow Stephen:Calvary Gamestwitch.tvpatreon.combluesky
Dan and Paul are joined by Tom McGrenery, game designer and co-host of the podcast Fear of a Black Dragon, to discuss the surprising common ground between OSR and story games. Nowadays in particular it's become normal for developers to make truly fantastic debut games such as Norco and The Case of the Golden Idol to mention just two. But it's hard to think of anybody who has made their mark as much as Tom Hardwidge, one half of Tall Story Games. Along with his wife Emma Hardwidge, who also voiced the main character in their debut game, they took the adventure game community by storm with their debut game Lucy Dreaming. But now they're back with their new game Heir of the Dog. With a hugely successful Kickstarter which was funded in less than 2 hours and made close to 5 times its goal it's clear their success is going to continue.Tom was kind enough to speak to Seoirse last December which is why none of this is mentioned but he does speak in more detail about what we can expect from his upcoming game Heir of the Dog including the story, gameplay, puzzles and he talks about his philosophy regarding puzzles and how much help should be given to players and he also has enough time to talk a little about his time voicing the main character in Guga's game The Will of Arthur Flabbington. Was machst du?

Is your life zany enough? Surely not! Spark your imagination (and laugh your socks off) as fantasy and dreampunk author Anna Tizard creates stories using the surrealist word game of Exquisite Corpse. Send words to annatizard.com/play and hear what happens when your entries are mixed with other people's and pulled out of… The Socks of Destiny! Creative writing prompts have never been this unique - or challenging. Listen with pen and paper to see if you can come up with new story ideas and take your writer's imagination to the next level. Episode 19 showcases the last 3 rounds of Exquisite Corpse game play for 2022, but never fear, this isn't (quite) the last show of the year.

We are joined today by Ole from Immortal Games to talk about Story Games History.Story Games History is a ground-breaking concept for making history more accessible, both to casual fans, and for learning purposes. Ole talks about his plan for approaching schools and colleges, adding more academic clout to this exciting project. Perhaps most interestingly, Ole explains how Story Games History will bring 16 key historical world events and persons to life through this innovative new educational medium, where players will be in the centre of dramatic events. The game kicks off with a scenario now frightfully familiar to us - the world poised on the edge of war, nuclear war. The date is 1962, and the Cuban Missile Crisis is underway. As Ole explains, the plan is to put you, the player, into the shoes of JFK, and see if your choices make or break the world. In terms of gameplay, Ole plans to use a 'choose your own adventure' style, with a story and dialogue written by dedicated researcher. He'll also draw on tools such as quizzes and puzzle games with visual connection to the event, and each of the planned 16 scenarios will follow this formula. We talk together about how we intend to collaborate, and how Matchlock could even get its own mobile game, with an exclusive story written by me!Above all, Ole shares a clear vision for how to bring Story Games History from concept to life. If anyone can do it, it's him! Ole is armed with experience in projects like these - including iDance, which brought him to the European Parliament, where he shared his vision for technology and learning can be blended together, to create something incredible. We hope you enjoy this fun conversation, and if you want to offer your expertise or advice, email me at wdfpodcast AT hotmail DOT com, with the subject Story Games History, and I'll be sure to pass it on!
