What if some of the people we think of as having the most unconventional sex lives are actually having some of the clearest conversations about intimacy? Because kink is about a lot more than whips, handcuffs, or what happens in a dungeon. At its best, it requires people to talk openly about things many couples struggle to discuss at all: What do I want? What are my boundaries? What makes me feel safe? What am I curious about? What am I afraid to admit turns me on? And can I trust you with a part of myself I don't show everyone else? Those are intimacy questions. And you don't have to have any interest in kink to learn from the answers. On this episode of The Language of Love, I'm joined by Amanda Dames, known as The Kink Consultant. Amanda is a sexologist, Somatica-certified sex and relationship coach, podcast host, and former New York City dominatrix. And her story is wild. Amanda found her way into New York's BDSM world almost by accident and eventually became a highly sought-after dominatrix working with powerful, successful men and women. People who spent their days being in charge would walk through her door desperate for something they rarely got anywhere else: permission to stop being in control. Then Amanda's own relationship to power took an unexpected turn. She met the man who would become her husband at a kink event, and the woman who had built a career being dominant discovered that, with him, she wanted to surrender. But this conversation isn't really about dungeons or labels. It's about what Amanda learned inside that world that applies to the rest of us. We talk about why so many of us hide our desires from the person we love most, how shame quietly follows us into the bedroom, and why feeling safe enough to say “this is what I want” can be an incredibly intimate act. Amanda also shares practices from the kink community that I think many couples could benefit from, including negotiating desires and boundaries before sex, checking in during an experience, and having an “aftercare” conversation afterward about what felt good, what didn't, and what you might want differently next time. And we get into something even bigger: power. Why can surrender feel so freeing for someone who carries enormous responsibility in the rest of their life? Why do some women crave the ability to soften and relinquish control while simultaneously fearing what that vulnerability requires? And what happens when you trust someone enough to show them a part of yourself you've been editing, hiding, or judging for years? En décembre 1949, plusieurs centaines de femmes quittent Abidjan pour marcher jusqu'à Grand-Bassam afin d'exiger la libération des dirigeants emprisonnés du parti de Félix Houphouët-Boigny, le PDCI-RDA, mis derrière les barreaux par l'administration coloniale française. Une mobilisation historique, brutalement réprimée, mais qui demeure aujourd'hui un symbole de courage et de résistance. Plus de 75 ans après, que reste-t-il de l'héritage des Dames glorieuses de Grand-Bassam ? Comment leur combat est-il transmis aux nouvelles générations ?  De notre correspondant de retour de Grand-Bassam, À 106 ans, Amlan Dan N'Guessan est l'une des dernières survivantes de la marche des femmes de Grand-Bassam. Ces femmes s'étaient mobilisées pour réclamer la libération de leurs époux, frères ou proches détenus par l'administration coloniale. Dans sa famille, cette histoire est devenue un héritage. « Moi, ma maman préparait à manger, elle apportait de l'eau. Ces femmes ont reçu des coups de fusil, de l'eau sale et des coups de matraque, souligne Leonni, sa fille. Mais ce sont des mamans qui ont été courageuses. Si elles avaient eu peur, nos grands-pères seraient morts en prison. » À l'époque, plusieurs dirigeants du PDCI-RDA sont détenus depuis près d'un an au camp pénal de Grand-Bassam, sans jugement. Parmi eux figure le père d'Aminata Traoré Camara. Sa mère aussi a participé à la marche. Plus de sept décennies plus tard, elle mesure encore l'importance de cet engagement. « C'est une grande fierté de savoir que nous avons eu notre mère qui n'a pas baissé les bras, confie-t-elle, avec les autres femmes qui les ont accompagnées dans ce mouvement. Elle nous a laissé un héritage. » Pour préserver cette mémoire, Aminata a créé avec sa famille une fondation dédiée aux marcheuses de Grand-Bassam. En 2020, l'organisation a recensé une vingtaine de survivantes et œuvre à faire connaître leur histoire. « On a un devoir de mémoire, des obligations vis-à-vis de ces personnes qui, pour la plupart aujourd'hui, sont presque centenaires, insiste Aminata Camara. Celles qui sont parties, comment honorer leur mémoire pour éviter qu'elles ne tombent dans l'oubli ? » À lire aussiCôte d'Ivoire: la marche à reculons vers l'indépendance Un moment décisif Pour l'historien Nandouhard Akueson, auteur du livre La marche des Dames glorieuses sur Bassam, cette mobilisation a constitué un moment décisif dans la lutte pour l'émancipation politique de la Côte d'Ivoire. « Il y a eu une négociation. Le mandat d'arrêt qui pesait notamment sur le député Houphouët-Boigny a été levé, rappelle-t-il. Il a alors pu discuter avec l'administration coloniale. Quelques mois plus tard, il y a eu l'instruction du dossier et la libération partielle des premiers prisonniers. » À l'entrée de Grand-Bassam, le monument des Dames glorieuses, érigé en 1995, veille sur la mémoire de ces femmes qui ont défié le pouvoir colonial. Un peu plus loin, au Musée national du costume, une exposition photographique retrace leur combat et perpétue le souvenir de ces héroïnes longtemps restées dans l'ombre. Welcome back to "The 20 Kingdoms" season. As you probably know, there are 20 districts in Paris, known as arrondissements. They may as well be kingdoms, at least for this podcast season, where I'll visit each kingdom and introduce you to someone who truly loves it. In this episode, it's Australian chef Tom Vickers.
