On this week's show we talk about 20 years of the HDTV and Home Theater Podcast! We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: A Software Update Is Killing Samsung Soundbars Apple TV+ loses $1 billion every year, according to new report ESPN might pay up to $2 billion for NFL Network, RedZone Netflix announces it is adding HDR10+ support for videos Apple to Launch HomeOS Later This Year Apple is set to have an exciting year in software development with significant updates planned for iOS 19, macOS 16, and iPadOS 19. However, the tech giant is also preparing to introduce a completely new operating system called ‘homeOS.' This new platform will accompany the launch of a novel device dubbed the ‘HomePad,' a smart display that blends features of the iPad and HomePod. The homeOS is anticipated to share many characteristics with Apple's existing platforms, yet it will be uniquely adapted for home use. It will feature a customizable Home Screen akin to those on iOS and iPadOS, allowing users to add widgets for weather, stocks, and reminders, launch apps from a grid, maintain a dock for favorite apps, and manage smart home controls. This familiarity should make it intuitive for current iPhone and iPad users. Additionally, Siri will play a pivotal role in homeOS, enhancing the integration of Apple Intelligence to provide a more context-aware and action-oriented voice experience, building on its capabilities from the HomePod and forthcoming iOS enhancements. In terms of applications, homeOS might not launch with a full App Store but it will come equipped with a robust suite of built-in Apple apps. Users can expect essentials like FaceTime, Notes, Calendar, Reminders, Home, Safari, Settings, News, Music, TV, Podcasts, Weather, and Photos. These apps will support the HomePad's function as a central home device, offering both productivity and entertainment options right out of the box, with the potential for more apps to be added in the future. A distinctive feature of homeOS will be its dynamic responsiveness to user proximity, enabled by sensors in the HomePad that adjust the display based on how close a person is. For instance, when a user is far from the device, it might showcase a slideshow of photos via the Photos app or display StandBy-like widgets as a screensaver. As the user approaches, the system will seamlessly transition to the Home Screen. This adaptive functionality underscores homeOS's design philosophy of “iOS, but for your home,” aiming to extend Apple's ecosystem cohesively into home environments and potentially appealing to the vast iPhone user base when the HomePad debuts later this year. In this episode, Scott Davert explores the different ways to access the Home Screen on iPhones without a Home Button. With the launch of the iPhone 16e, Apple has fully transitioned to a buttonless design, changing how users interact with their devices. For those accustomed to the tactile feedback of the Home Button, this shift may feel challenging. However, several alternative methods can replicate its functionality.1. Using the Default Gesture:To return to the Home Screen without a physical button:Place a finger at the bottom center of the screen.Quickly swipe upward until you feel a slight vibration or hear a "pop" sound.Release your finger to navigate to the Home Screen.Tip: Using the charging port as a reference point can help with finger placement. Adding a small tactile marker, such as a bump dot, on your case near the swipe area can also provide a reliable guide.2. Customizing VoiceOver Gestures:VoiceOver users can assign the Home function to a different gesture for easier navigation:Assigning Home to a Two-Finger Swipe Right:Open Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Commands > Touch Gestures.Choose a gesture, such as a two-finger swipe right.Under the "System" section, select "Home".If the gesture is already assigned, iOS will notify you. Confirm the reassignment by selecting "Assign".Note: The two-finger swipe right is typically used for grouped navigation, so choose another gesture if this conflicts with your existing setup.3. Enabling Back Tap:Back Tap allows users to activate specific functions by tapping the back of their iPhone:Setting Up Back Tap for Home Screen Access:Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.Toggle "Back Tap" on.Choose "Triple Tap".From the options, select "Home".Observation: If you use a thick phone case, Back Tap may not work as effectively. Adjust your tapping technique or consider using a thinner case if needed.4. Using the Action Button with Siri Shortcuts:On certain iPhone models with an Action Button, you can program it to bring you to the Home Screen using a Siri Shortcut:Configuring the Action Button for Home:Download the shortcut, courtesy of AppleVis' very own AnonyMouse. on a compatible iPhone. If the shortcut doesn't run automatically, tap "Add Shortcut" to enable it.Navigate to Settings > Action Button.Select "Shortcut" from the menu.Choose "Go to Home Screen" from the list of shortcuts. Now, pressing and holding the Action Button will return you to the Home Screen.Reminder: To maintain security, only download shortcuts from reputable sources.By utilizing these methods, users can easily adjust to Apple's buttonless design, ensuring a smooth and intuitive experience on modern iPhones. If you'd like to read this in a written guide, you can find it here: Finding Your Way Home in a (Home) Buttonless World: Using an iOS Device Without a Home ButtonTranscript…

On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we take a look back at all of Apple's biggest announcements this year. Apple's year started out with the launch of Apple highly anticipated Vision Pro headset in February. This "spatial computer" marked Apple's first brand new product line in years, seeking to blend the physical and digital worlds. Powered by the M2 and R1 chips, the Vision Pro uses over a dozen sensors and cameras to map environments in real-time, boasting two high-resolution displays for immersive experiences and advanced hand-tracking. In March, Apple refreshed its popular MacBook Air lineup, unveiling new 13-and 15-inch models powered by the M3 chip. May brought significant updates to the iPad lineup. Apple launched the iPad Air 6, now available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes and powered by the M2 chip, and the redesigned iPad Pro, featuring OLED displays for the first time and the debut of the M4 chip. Accompanying these devices was the Apple Pencil Pro, offering precision enhancements and haptic feedback for creative professionals, and the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, which further bridges the gap between iPads and laptops. Apple hosted its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, unveiling iOS 18 with enhanced Home Screen customization, a redesigned Control Center, and more. The company also previewed macOS Sequoia, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2, but the biggest announcement was Apple Intelligence – a new suite of AI tools for Apple devices. As usual, September was packed with major announcements. The iPhone 16 lineup debuted, with the standard models embracing Pro-like features such as the Camera Control button, Action button, and spatial video capture. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max gained bigger displays, longer battery life, an improved ultra wide camera, and more. The Apple Watch Series 10 launched in September, showcasing a thinner design, while the Apple Watch Ultra 2 gained a back colour option and a new titanium Milanese Loop. Apple also debuted the fourth-generation AirPods, now with optional ANC, and a USB-C version of the AirPods Max. October saw a minor refresh of the iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence. Apple closed the year with a focus on its Mac lineup, bringing the M4 family of chips to the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini. Most notably, the Mac mini was completely redesigned with an even smaller enclosure measuring just 5 inches by 5 inches. The iMac and MacBook Pro also gained enhanced cameras and a nano-texture display option for the first time, along with a series of other small but significant improvements. Alongside this, Apple finally refreshed its Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard with USB-C connectivity. What do you think about Apple's releases this year? Let us know in the comments.
In this episode, Tyler demonstrates the basics of using iPhone Mirroring, a feature that allows you to use your iPhone from your Mac, with VoiceOver. Topics covered in this demonstration include:General description of the feature and its current issues and limitationsSystem requirements and setupNavigating and dealing with various elements of the iOS user interface, such as the Home Screen, rotor actions, and context menus, using macOSControlling which iPhone apps can forward notifications to your MacMore general information about this feature can be found in the Apple Support article "iPhone Mirroring: Use your iPhone from your Mac."TranscriptDisclaimer: This transcript was generated by Aiko, an AI-powered transcription app. It is not edited or formatted, and it may not accurately capture the speakers' names, voices, or content.Hey Apple visitors, Tyler here, with a demonstration and overview of iPhone mirroring. iPhone mirroring is a feature that allows you to essentially use your iPhone from your Mac.This may be useful if you, for example, prefer a given service's mobile app over its desktop or web equivalent, or if what you're using doesn't have a desktop app or website. In addition, as notifications from your iPhone can be forwarded to your Mac via iPhone mirroring, you may find it more convenient to receive and respond to the notification on your Mac than to switch devices if you're working on your Mac when the notification comes in.With the initial release of Mac OS Sequoia 15.0, this feature was completely inaccessible with voiceover. With the subsequent 15.1 update, it has become accessible to a point.I say to a point because at the time of recording, October 2024, there are several issues that, in my opinion, make the experience less than refined from a voiceover perspective, which I'll elaborate on later in this demo.To use iPhone mirroring with voiceover, you'll need an iPhone with iOS 18.1 or later and a Mac with Mac OS 15.1 or later. All iPhones capable of running iOS 18 work with iPhone mirroring, as do all Macs capable of running Sequoia, with the exception of the 2019 iMac, as that model lacks the T2 security chip or Apple silicon. To set up iPhone mirroring, just open the iPhone mirroring app on your Mac and follow the on-screen instructions.I've already done that, so now I'm going to demonstrate the feature.I'm going to open iPhone mirroring on my Mac.So here I am prompted to authenticate.By default, whenever you open the iPhone mirroring app, you are prompted to authenticate as a way to verify your identity before it gives you control of your iPhone. If you'd rather, it didn't prompt you to authenticate each time you open the app, you can change this in iPhone mirroring settings.Just choose settings from the menu bar or press command comma and it should be there. But I'm going to authenticate with touch ID now.Close button.Okay, so here I am in the iPhone mirroring window.Okay, so we have home screen and app switcher. Now you can use those buttons to get to those locations, or I find it more convenient to use the view menu or keyboard shortcuts.…

One of the biggest drains on your time (and productivity) is a disorganized workspace. This week, I'm sharing some ideas for getting organised so you can find what you need when you need it. A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein, and I am your host of this show. I remember watching videos by David Allen—author of Getting Things Done—where he explains the importance of having an organised workspace. These videos were recorded before the digital takeover, yet the principles remain the same whether we deal with paper or digital documents. If your stuff is all over the place, you will waste a lot of time trying to find what you need, and it's surprising how much time you lose. This week's question caught my attention, as getting and keeping your workspace organised is an overlooked part of the modern productivity movement. It won't matter how clever your digital tools are if you don't know where everything is or how to organise your notes so you can find what you need when you need it in seconds. You'll still waste much time doing stuff you shouldn't need to do. As I researched this, I could only find advice on keeping desks and physical files, notes, and documents organised. There is little advice on keeping a digital workspace clean and organised. Well, that is apart from some older articles about how an untidy computer desktop slows down your computer and makes finding anything slow and cumbersome. Now before I go further, let me hand you over to the Mystery Podcast Voice for this week's question. This week's question comes from Alice. Alice asks, Hi Carl, How do you keep all your files, notes and other digital things organised? I'm really struggling here and would love some advice. Hi Alice, thank you for your question. One of the first things you will need to do is allocate a single place for your digital documents. Today, most people are comfortable storing all their personal files in a cloud storage system, such as Google Docs, Microsoft OneDrive, or Apple's iCloud. If you are concerned about security, an external hard drive also works. Now, just as before the 2000s, you will likely have two places: one for work and one for your personal stuff. Your company will probably dictate your work storage system. The important thing about storing documents and files you may need is accessibility—i.e., how fast you can access the files. In the past, if we wanted a file for a client named Rogers, we would go to the filing cabinet, locate the letter R, and find the file for Rogers there. If it wasn't there, one of our colleagues probably had it. (And how frustrating was that) Today, all you need to do is open iCloud, One Drive or Google Drive and type in the name of the client you are looking for. You will then be presented with a list of all the documents related to that client. And perhaps you may already be seeing a problem. In the past, everything was kept together in a single file folder; today, client notes can be found everywhere. We have CRM systems (Customer Relationship Management software) that track communications with customers and clients. However, these are only as good as those who enter the data. We receive phone calls, emails, perhaps text messages, and all the documentation generated by orders, invoices, and quotes. If the people entering the data are not timely and perfect, time can be wasted just looking for all that stuff. Those CRM systems may track documents related to that client, which makes things a little easier. But do you trust them? So, how can you keep your workspace organised and in order? First, choose your tools. Your calendar and email will likely already be selected for you in your professional environment. Fortunately, you should have freedom over your task manager and notes app. Rule number one. Use only one. By this, I mean one task manager, one notes app and one calendar. Now, it is okay to use a separate calendar for your work events; after all, you may only be able to access your work calendar through selected devices. I would always advise you to try to connect your work calendar to your personal one where possible. By this, I mean that if you use a Google or Apple calendar for your personal life, you can subscribe to your work calendar. Not all companies allow this, but I've found that most do. This way, you have all your events viewable in one place. (Wasn't life easier when we all carried our own diaries? No interference from outsiders) Your to-do list and notes, however, are entirely within your realm. Avoid the temptation of using your work's Microsoft To-Do or Trello. You want to have your complete life together, not scattered everywhere. You may need to call a client early in the morning, and if all the details are separated on your work's system, that call could easily be missed. Similarly, you may need to contact your bank. If that task is on a personal system, unless you look at that system in your lunch break, you're going to miss it. Now here's a quick tip. Use a daily note. A daily note is a note you create each day to capture meeting notes, ideas, things to look up, and other useful bits of information. Each note's title is today's date. As you create a new note each day, you have a reference—the date. If you number each item you add to the daily note, you now have a transferable reference to link to tasks and calendar events. For example, imagine I captured an idea for a YouTube video, added it to my daily note, and assigned it the number 1. That means the reference number for that idea is today's date plus 1. I can use that reference for any task or project from that idea. You can go one step further by adding a link to the note for your task, so all you need to do is click the link and boom, you are right where you need to be. I would also advise you to keep your digital notes separate from work. I once had a client who was a university professor. She used her university's OneNote to organise all her research notes. She then left that university, and within two or three hours of leaving, the system's organiser deleted all her notes. Seven years of research gone in seconds. Of course, you should keep confidential information off your personal devices, but a large part of what we keep in notes is not confidential and is usually meeting notes, ideas, and possible solutions to difficult problems. Once you have your tools and storage places sorted, it comes down to making sure what you need when you need it is quickly accessible. To do that, learn how to search your computer. On Apple devices, this means learning to use Spotlight. It's a powerful tool that means I can find coaching client feedback simply by typing their name into the search box. I can also find digital copies of my passport, car insurance, residency permits and my address in Korean (I find it's faster to copy/paste than to type in Korean) Everything I need frequently is instantly to hand. And that's another reference to the pre-2000s. An optimised workspace meant that you had the files you were working on and anything else you needed quick access to within arms reach of your desk. Anything you didn't need was stored in filing cabinets a few steps away from you. There's the famous picture of Rose-Mary Woods, President Nixon's secretary, demonstrating how she accidentally erased 18 minutes of the tape recordings during the Watergate investigation. If you Google the picture, you can see that everything a secretary would need was on her desk or next to it (or rather coincidently, within arms reach) For Windows computers, look up Universal Search. That will explain how you can search for everything on your computer from a single place. The final part of the puzzle is file naming. For years, I've used a file name system that includes the date, the file type, and the name. For example, if I had a client named Bill Tanner and wrote a proposal for him, the proposal title would be 2024-09-25-proposal-Bill Tanner. If I need to amend the proposal, I would change the date. This way, when I search Bill Tanner, I will see all the proposals I have written grouped together. I've found that adding version numbers to the title doesn't work either, and it's not as easy to get to the latest document. Searching by date puts the very latest version on top every time. And I do still recommend keeping your desktop clean. A cluttered desktop causes distraction. A clean desktop helps maintain focus. Now, before I finish, I should mention your phone. This can be a complete mess. I was in the bank the other day, and some twenty-somethings were opening an account. All they had with them was their phones, yet when the bank clerk asked them for different documents, they took ages to find the information on their phones. Rather amusingly, an elderly gentleman, armed with a plastic wallet of essential documents, completed his business at the bank far faster than those twenty-somethings. When the clerk asked him for a document, he pulled it out and handed it over instantly. It was a real eye-opener for me. Perhaps paper is faster than digital… Sometimes. What I've learned is to keep all your frequently used apps on your Home Screen. Learn how to use widgets—they can be a real-time saver when you need them. Oh, and one more: when flying, use your airline's app. Place it on your Home Screen. It's incredible how often you need that at the airport or in a taxi when they ask you which terminal you need to go to. And there you go, Alice. I hope that has helped. It comes down to doing a little cleaning up and getting your important files and apps where you need them. Remember, it's all about accessibility. Thank you, Alice, for your question, and thank you for listening. It just remains for me now to wish you all a very, very productive week.

Joined by Guy Serle, Marty Jencius, and Jeff Gamet, we share insights on new AI features, the revamped Siri interface, and the user experience challenges of the beta software. We dive into my experiences with Vision Pro and its OS 2 updates, plus the excitement surrounding the upcoming iPhone 16, particularly its emphasis on repairability. Additionally, we explore the new security features and enhancements in iOS 18, underscoring the significant improvements for users. The episode wraps up with a light discussion on sports app updates and streaming complications, highlighting the ongoing evolution of Apple's ecosystem. It's great to have Guy Searle, Marty Gentius, and Jeff Gammon join me to discuss everything from the latest beta updates to the anticipated iPhone 16 releases. We kick off the episode by discussing the release of iOS 18.1 beta 4 and MacOS Sequoia 15.1, which has many users excited about Apple intelligence features that were not included in the initial iOS 18 release. The anticipation for these AI-powered capabilities is palpable, especially among developers and enthusiasts who want to see how Apple will improve text handling and voice recognition through updates like the revamped Siri interface. Marty shares his experiences with running the beta, highlighting some underwhelming aspects of Apple intelligence, while we all voice the consensus that some features still feel “early-stage.” We also discuss public access to the 18.1 beta and caution users against installing it on production devices, reminding listeners of the potential instability that often accompanies beta software. Of particular interest is the integration of AI features like improved spell-checking, grammar corrections, and enhanced user input methods. Transitioning into discussions on Vision Pro, I share my experiences with the device over the last two weeks. We cover the recent updates to Vision OS 2, including enhanced response times and new guest modes for easier use by family and friends. Guy and Marty contribute insights about the evolving app landscape for Vision Pro, connecting it to broader trends in VR and AR technology, as well as user adoption challenges associated with high-cost devices. From there, we dive into the excitement surrounding the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro's upcoming release. There's an electric buzz in the conversation as we discuss the features of the new devices, especially the ease of repairs highlighted in Apple's communications. With the iPhone 16, we see a shift where repairability is finally being addressed, paving the way for sustainable practices in tech. As we discuss some of the risks of being an early adopter, especially with iOS 18, I present a series of the most exciting new features we can expect to see with the OS, including the revamped Control Center, RCS support for smoother communication integration across devices, customizable home screen widgets, and enhancements to the calculator app. Each feature seems to represent a significant leap in usability and user experience. Throughout the episode, we also touch on new security features, including the ability to lock apps and hide them for enhanced privacy, which is especially useful for sensitive applications. The Passwords app is also discussed, with a consensus that while it may not replace niche solutions like 1Password, it provides a solid and user-friendly option for the average person looking to manage their passwords effectively. In a lighter vein, we wrap up our conversations about the sports app updates and the implications for streaming sports, discussing the rising costs and complications that often frustrate sports fans. Jeff vocalizes common grievances about the fragmentation of sports streaming services, while we all acknowledge the challenges ahead for sports enthusiasts trying to navigate this landscape. As we conclude, we emphasize how each update and new feature ultimately aims to enhance user experiences across Apple's ecosystem. It's a thrilling time for tech enthusiasts, and we're excited to see how these updates will transform the ways we interact with our devices. Knitting in Passing During Marta's visit, the kids turned the living room at my parents' into a craft room. Millie knit on the hat she's making for her dad. Riley worked on crochet hexagons for our matching blankets. Roc crocheted on a crab and eventually started a giraffe amigurumi and a baby hat. Riley taught Roc to make a crochet hexagon. Even Max & Garret got in on the action and did some drawing. One of the first afternoons, we were sitting at the bar at my parents' pool. Marta was sewing up a hole in Max's shirt, I was finishing some socks and Roc was crocheting his crab. Throughout the trip, Roc (age 12) was crocheting constantly- in the car, at the table, at the park, anytime he had a few free minutes. He was incredibly adept at chatting and keeping up with his pattern working in increases and decreases. We ended up going to 6 craft stores- Plymouth Harbor Knits, Michaels, Joann, The Craft Loft, Hobby Lobby, Gather Here. Roc also got a crochet kit at Dollar Tree (the same dinoaur my niece Aila bought earlier this summer). We had a campfire at my house one night. Roc, Millie and Hattie spent most of the night crafting in my studio. We visited my house after kayaking & ice cream one afternoon- Hattie also did a bit of knitting on my Musselburgh hat. I found a few dropped stitches the next time I picked it up but that's ok. Crafty Adventures Marta, Roc and I did some resin projects while they were visiting. Roc put resin in the bottom of a small wooden crate and then we worked together on a pumpkin lazy susan. Update on Mom: Mom had a couple good days while Marta was visiting. Grateful we were able to spend time together even when she couldn't leave the house. The sound of the boys laughing brought her joy. She had the catheter removed from her lung. Began having throat issues that worsened day after day. On Thursday 9/12 came for scans and chemo, but only had scans and then was admitted. She's had a whole slew of tests and so far they haven't found anything wrong which is good news, but we still need to get to the bottom of things. One bit of good news, she should be having an injection of filler into her paralyzed right vocal cord that will allow her voice to come back. Ask Me Anything Herdofhills asked about: fall project plans, books, favorite fall recipes I am looking forward to: apple picking, apple sauce, wood chopping weekend, oven baked oatmeal (here's a recipe I like to use), a Better Off Dead movie party, I've already enjoyed watching Hocus Pocus (1 & 2), pulling out the wool socks and wearing those at night, decorating, overnight oats for breakfast which I tend to eat more in fall/winter. Even better for fall is warm. Deborahjay- Love is blind UK I was watching but got sidetracked with Marta's visit. For the first time, I found myself fast forwarding through the pre-wedding stuff to hear yes/no. Liked that it seemed like folks were actually there for love and that the cast was far less dramatic than the US participants. kjkcrochet- I'd love to know a little bit more about your job I'm a Project Manager in the Nursing Dept of a big boston hospital, supporting a communication system and other projects thank involve communication, responsiveness (to patients) and technology). Tune in to hear more. On a Happy Note Max's reaction to Plymouth Rock! Teaching Roc some new crochet stitches and seeing his enthusiasm. He's definitely my new buddy. On this week's show we have an AppleTV and a native GoogleTV comparison from a listener. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Samsung is helping to bring AirPlay to more hotel rooms NBCUniversal to Offer 400+ Hours of 4K HDR Olympics Coverage on USA Network, a Record Turns out Netflix makes more money if it just acts like regular TV Other: Handcrafted in the USA - Vintage Reclaimed Maple & Elm Speakers Doitforme.solutions Apollo Group TV Apple TV vs Google TV - John Lyman Around Thanksgiving the finance committee allowed me to purchase a new Hisense U7K 75” 4K TV. However, once I got the TV setup and ready to go, something weird happened with my Apple TV that I had been using on the TV in that room. Max just stopped working. I did all the troubleshooting to no avail. I decided that I would give the built in Google TV a shot to see if that could be a long-term solution. Over the course of six months I went back and forth with the two platforms and took notes. I thought I would write up my findings for everyone. A few caveats: This is my first experience with Google TV The Google TV is the built in version on my TV I live in the Apple ecosystem and I have owned every Apple TV from the 1st gen to the current. So, I do know the Apple TV a lot better, but I did my best to be fair. User Interface Apple TV: The user interface is very nice, it seems lighter, crisp and clean. You can easily design the Home Screen the way you would like it laid out and create folders. I have a folder for my main TV/Movie apps, then one for sports, another for movies, etc. Because you can customize the Home Screen it is very easy to navigate to where you want to go. Google TV: When you open it, you are at the top of google TV page with their offerings and everything is laid out in rows. The App icons seem smaller than apps on the Apple TV and smaller than the “Google Recommended” apps. You must scroll past those to get to your apps. I have not found a way to rearrange the main page so I can move my apps above the recommended offerings. You can move your apps in the order you would like but it is not as nice. I did try to find out if you can use folders on Google TV and it does not look like you can. The interface is what it is. Remotes: Apple TV: The metal Siri remote in my opinion is one of the best remotes out there. I can control 98% of what I need to use from that one remote. The other 2% is for those times I can't find a digital copy of a movie I own and need to use the Blu-Ray or tweak the picture of the TV. Very quick to navigate with the remote around the Apple TV. Also, the iPhone companion remote is really good too. Google TV: The remote that came with the TV controls my HT gear and if I used Google home I'm sure the remote's mic would give me voice control of lights and thermostat similar to the Apple remote. Additionally, I find swiping over the touch-enabled clickpad much easier than clicking up/down/left/right buttons on the TV's remote. I didn't have luck setting up the iPhone remote with the TV, this is probably a me item and I didn't spend a lot of time worrying about it. Apple TV+ vs Google TV's Home app: Both apps have a lot in common, like Movie/TV suggestions, an area for your purchased content, etc. Apple's implementation is self-contained and can be placed anywhere on your home screen. Google's version is fixed at the top of the screen and you must scroll down the screen to get to your apps. Picture quality, audio and App Responsiveness: So the last test was to actually watch some video to see if there was any difference. The setup: Internet – AT&T 1.0 GPS fiber, using a TPLink Mesh router – delivering 300 Mbs to the TV Denon AVR-X3200W receiver – running Dolby Atmos Speakers – RSL home theater package, 12” RSL speedwoofer and mirage omni-directional Atmos speakers I set up both the TV and my Apple TV for Dolby Vision and started watching content on both services. One thing I couldn't do was turn on Dolby Vision for the Google TV which shocked me. The TV did auto switch and even though HBO Max said the movie was in Dolby Vision it would only do HDR. I tried to figure out the issue but couldn't quickly find an answer. I quickly realized that any movie purchased from the Apple store was of higher quality than those from any of the streaming companies both in picture and sound. I watched a few scenes from the latest Aqua man as there were some really dark scenes with good color and then some Star Wars. With the Google TV setup to use HDR and the TV in the Movie preset, the picture was good. The AppleTV produced a little bit better picture with the same TV preset. The AppleTV sounded better too. I could hear some additional sounds on the AppleTV that I couldn't hear while using GoogleTV. The biggest difference was App responsiveness. When opening an app on the AppleTV, its click and it opens. GoogleTV took a few seconds. Then clicking the play button would buffer for about 10-20 seconds before playing and the picture was lower resolution for a few seconds. The video on the AppleTV started right up and I didn't notice any picture issues. Built in vs Stand Alone Box Built in OS strengths: Built into the TV Pretty easy to setup right out of the box Integrated into the TV and remote Stand Alone Strengths: Both hardware and software designed for a singular purpose Not TV dependent You can take it with you when you travel If new features are not supported due to hardware limitations you can buy a new STB Built in OS weakness: If new features are not supported due to hardware limitations you are stuck Hardware more likely designed for the TV and the OS a secondary If you have multiple TVs with different OSes you will have an inconsistent experience May cause you to stay within a manufacturer's product line to keep the same OS within the home Can become slower than the stand-alone devices over time Stand Alone weakness: They cost extra Hard to switch eco-systems due to cost of devices if you wanted to Summary: I was really surprised by a few things after doing the comparison. The first being the lack of Dolby Vision on the Google OS built into my Hisense TV. The option was not available for the Google Home app. I usually leave the TV in Dolby Vision on the Apple TV as I find the picture pretty good with all content and I'm not a fan of my TV's auto switching (going black for a few seconds). The second was the difference in app responsiveness and picture start up times. The Apple TV was quicker in both aspects. The last was the difference in the quality of purchased movies from Apple versus the streamers and purchases from Amazon. Streamers and Amazon were inferior to the same content from Apple. I did not compare streamers and Amazon versus Google using native apps on the GoogleTV. Bottom line I believe an Apple TV is like a well-made German car, over engineered, nice looking with features you didn't know you wanted until you lose them. Google OS is your typical mid-range SUV that everyone makes, most people drive and they all look similar and they get the job done of getting you from here to there.

On this week's special episode of The MacRumors Show from Apple Park, we look at all of the major updates coming to Apple's operating systems later this year and Apple Intelligence. Monday's keynote event was insane, and jam-packed with an overwhelming number of AI features that are going to change the way we use Apple devices. We were able to visit the Apple Podcasts studio for the day just after the event to discuss what's in store. We take a look at Apple Intelligence, which is what Apple calls the AI capabilities coming to almost every app iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Apple is focusing on practical tools that drastically improve the functionality of Siri, help you write and edit, and cut down on the little hassles in life. It's not all business, though, and there are some fun image and emoji generating tools that we go over, along with a surprising partnership with OpenAI that lets Siri loop in ChatGPT for requests. We also get into the new iOS 18 Home Screen design options, the revamped Control Center, and the features coming to Messages, plus we delve into the changes that Apple is making in iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, visionOS 2, and watchOS 11. The MacRumors Show has its own YouTube channel, so make sure you're subscribed to keep up with new episodes and clips: You can also listen to The MacRumors Show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, or your preferred podcasts app. You can also copy our RSS feed directly into your podcast player.
It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show where our show notes are written and not corrected by any A.I. Allison, Brian, and Jeanine get together to recap and give our thoughts on all the big announcements from WWDC 24. We start off with a story about a phone booth, yes, a phone booth. Elon Musk has gotten a remote tribe in the Amazon connected to the internet, and you would never guess what has happened! We then discuss the pilot for a new sitcom called Don't Look Now. This sitcom is all about the blind starring the blind, and produced by some of the blind. There will be a very private screening of the sitcom in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, July 6, 2024. If you would like to be invited to the VIP very important people, not visually impaired people please email us at ThatRealBlindTechshow@gmail.com and we will work on getting you an invite to attend the premier event. We then discuss the XR Access Conference that Brian just attended out on Roosevelt Island in New York City. This then leads us in to a conversation about the Meta Ray Ban Glasses. We then dive in to our recap of this year's WWDC. We start off discussing the newly announced Apple Intelligence. And after years of false promises will Siri finally get smarter? We discuss some of the things the new Siri will supposedly be able to do. And here is how Siri will work with ChatGPT in iOS 18. And there are a bunch of new writing tools that will be powered by A.I. We then discuss all the new A.I. features coming to mail. The iPhone, iPad, and Mac will be getting a new Password Manager application. The app will also work on your Window devices. In iOS 18 and iPad 18 customizing your Home Screen will be a lot easier. And thankfully the global issue of iOS not supporting RCS messaging will be over. Control Center will become a lot more useful. Image Playground is another new app coming to iPhones and Macs. And there is a massive redesign coming to the Photos app. We then discuss all the new features coming to the iPad which are pretty much the same as the iPhone except you also get a calculator. Tap to send cash will be a new feature in iOS 18. Live phone recordings is a new feature that won't end in spectacular disaster. iOS 18 will now alert you when you are using a slow charger, but there is a catch. We then discuss all the new features coming to Mac OS Sequoia. iPhone Mirroring is coming to the Mac, but will it be accessible? Safari is also getting a massive revamp with a ton of A.I. features. Non-verbal gestures are coming to Air Pods near you. There are a lot of new health and fitness features coming to the Apple Watch along with Live Activities. The translate app makes its way to the watch in Watch OS11. AppleTV gets a feature called Insight also known on Amazon Prime as X-ray. And Brian finally gets to find out if the Geek was back! And of course it's more of Watcha Streaming, Watcha Reading. Try Notion for free by visiting https://www.notion.com/macrumors On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss some of the latest rumors about iOS 18 such as deeper Home Screen customization, AI-generated emojis, and more. With iOS 18, Siri is expected to undergo a substantial overhaul with improved natural language processing, enabling more conversational interactions and proactive intelligence. The assistant will apparently understand and perform more complex tasks within apps. These tasks range from moving notes between folders and deleting emails to summarizing articles and recent notifications. Spotlight search will also allegedly see similar enhancements, integrating deeper with system-wide information to provide more intelligent and relevant results. In Messages, AI will suggest responses and create custom emojis based on message content. The Photos app will incorporate AI-powered retouching tools and Apple Music will offer auto-generated playlists and smoother song transitions. iOS 18 is also expected to introduce a more customizable Home Screen. Users will have the freedom to place app icons anywhere on the grid and change app icon colors. Safari is expected to gain an Intelligent Search option, summarizing key topics and phrases on web pages, and a new Web Eraser tool, which allows users to remove unwanted portions of websites. The Calculator app will be redesigned to include recent calculations and better unit conversion tools, becoming a universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple Maps will introduce custom routes and topographic maps, enhancing navigation and outdoor activities. Accessibility is another focus area for iOS 18 with new features like Eye Tracking, which uses the front-facing camera to navigate the interface, and Vehicle Motion Cues, designed to reduce motion sickness. Music Haptics will provide tactile feedback in sync with music, and Vocal Shortcuts will enable users to assign custom phrases for Siri to execute complex tasks. The adoption of the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard should improve messaging between iPhones and Android devices with support for higher resolution photos, audio messages, typing indicators, read receipts, and improved group chat functionality. iOS 18 is expected to be compatible with all iPhones that support iOS 17, including models as old as the iPhone XR and iPhone XS. However, iPadOS 18 may drop support for older models such as the first-generation 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, focusing instead on more recent devices.

We also have more insight into Apple's AI plans and its approach to handling user data privacy while remaining feature competitive.
