Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! It's October, so you know what that means in a Presidential Election year - October Surprises! We reflect on previous October surprises in 2020 and 2016 - oh for simpler times... This week's ballot plug goes to.... THE BIG 7: 7 incumbent Senate Democrats really need to hold onto their seats, especially since Joe Manchin (D?-WV) is noping out of Congress. Split a donation between Ruben Gallego (AZ), Elissa Slotkin (MI), Jon Tester (MT), Jacky Rosen (NV), Sherrod Brown (OH), Bob Casey Jr. (PA), Tammy Baldwin (WI) at Swing Left.  Are the most prominent voices amongst toxic fandom figures just out for blood? Some in Hollywood think so. Should there be limits on how much production companies are relying on fan input/focus groups? Has fandom toxicity gotten worse over the years due to the internet and social media? We think so. The slippery slope of fans thinking they know better than creators, and burning those creators when they don't match fan visions. Our very own Pam has seen backlash from toxic fans just for reporting the NEWS. This week's recommendations are a mix of altruism and comfort: Donating to support Hurricane Milton relief (Laura), Balatro on mobile (Andrew), and Snag Tights (Pam). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon and Apple Podcasts: Come get cozy with us for what may be the most wholesome discussion to ever happen on this show! The great columnist for The Washington Post Dana Milbank has a hilarious/frightening new book: Fools on the Hill: The Hooligans, Saboteurs, Conspiracy Theorists, and Dunces Who Burned Down the House. Bill's conversation with Dana highlights the perceived incompetence and extremism of the current Republican House members, including figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kevin McCarthy. Milbank's book chronicles the dysfunction and conspiracy theories within the House Republican caucus. Milbank argues that if Republicans maintain control of the House with Trump-aligned members like Mike Johnson as Speaker, it could pose a serious threat to American democracy, as they would likely seek to overturn election results at Trump's behest. The podcast emphasizes the high stakes of the 2024 House races and the need for Democrats to regain control to prevent further damage to the institution of Congress.Bill points us to SwingLeft , an organization targeting the key races that could win control of the House and Senate. If Harris wins, she will need a Democratic Congress to get things done. Go to SwingLeft.org and give what you can. Lisa Vandever is an organizer and activist with over 30 years of experience in media, communications, arts and events. A lifelong Democrat, she is a co-leader of the progressive group, Indivisible Rahway, and an active member of Fair Ballot Alliance NJ and OneNJ7. An enthusiastic Garden Stater by way of Oregon, Chicago and Brooklyn, she has been happily settled in Rahway, NJ for two decades with husband, Alan, and two ginger tabbies, Clive and Radley. Everyone who is interested in the 2024 U.S. election, getting involved in local politics, and activism will learn a lot from this discussion that begins focused on Rahway and its greater region. What did co-hosts Robin Renée and Wendy Sheridan learn this past fortnight? Wendy took in a couple of lofty facts about the weight and density of clouds while Robin attempted Gen Alpha slang. With too much going on to be neatly broken into headlines and deep dives, news items include Hurricane Helene and numerous weather disasters around the world, a lawsuit by members of the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio against Donald Trump and JD Vance, Chappell Roan's non-endorsement of Kamala Harris, the Rahway Library roundup, Rudy Giuliani's disbarment, the new haka world record, and much more. In Why Is This Awesome?, Wendy and Robin reflect on the health benefits of arts practices (and get side-tracked by The Church of the SubGenius). Wendy nominates Reverend Kat Irwin for Lefty of the Week. Things to do: Register to vote or confirm your voter registration today. Get active with Indivisible and learn more about Indivisible Rahway. Learn how a group in the Capital Region encourages people here and beyond to vote. Mary Panzetta, a "Letter Leader" for WeGOTV explains how the organization coordinates logistics for volunteers to hand-address letters to registered voters who do not regularly participate in elections. Preprinted letters coordinated by two national partners, Vote Forward and Swing Left, have spaces for folks to write a single sentence on why they believe voting is important. She stresses that the letters encourage voting, but do not endorse a specific candidate or even party. By 2023 the Albany group sent 70,000 cards or letters, the third-highest volume in the country. The goal for 2024 is 280,000 letters & cards. These can be written at monthly events, or by picking up packets of materials to write at home. For more information, email wegotv.ny@gmail.com. Swing Left is an organization that aims to channel resources to the most impactful elections to ensure Democrats have the balance of power. They focus on competitive races and flipping Republican-held seats to Democratic-held seats. They target both federal and state-level elections, with a particular emphasis on the House and Senate. Swing Left believes that without Democratic control, nuanced policy disagreements are irrelevant because the government will be co-opted by extremists. They prioritize grassroots efforts, such as door-knocking and phone banking, to engage voters and persuade them to support Democratic candidates.  Swing Left also recognizes the importance of the abortion issue in elections and aims to educate voters on candidates' positions and the impact of their votes. They emphasize the need for progress on immigration policy and highlight the lack of movement on the issue in recent years. Swing Left encourages individuals to get involved by signing up on their website and contributing their time or money to support competitive races.

We're going deep with Democratic candidates on the primary ballot for Congress and for the California State Assembly. Gil Cisneros is running to replace a retiring Grace Napolitano for CA 31 in the San Gabriel Valley. And local businessman and Swing Left organizer Steve Pierson is running for the 44th Assembly district in California.Gil is a former Naval Officer who served previously in California's 39th district and as Under Secretary of Defense in the Biden Administration. Gil and his wife won $266 million dollars in California's Mega Millions Lottery. They have put the windfall to wonderful use, setting up scholarship funds across the San Gabriel Valley.  We talk to Gil about the great hypothetical question, “What would I do if I won the lottery?” And his ability to stay that course once dream became reality. We ask him why he left the Republican Party in 2008, we discuss the issues that concern his district like immigration, homelessness, transportation, and the environment. Gil is eager to get to work advocating for veterans, gun safety reform, economic opportunity for working families, climate action, defending women's rights and furthering the diversity programs he credits with his own pathway to success.Steve Pierson came to politics very naturally. His father worked on The Great Society in the LBJ administration. Steve took a detour into the entertainment industry, but after the election of Trump he spearheaded Swing Left, a grassroots organizational effort to flip purple districts blue.Steve's assembly district will cover much of the East San Fernando Valley and he has already travelled to Sacramento to meet with members, build relationships and discuss future legislation that could best serve his district. Steve tells us that California's state house super majority allows them to make groundbreaking laws that serve as models for the country in clean energy, transportation, gun safety and health care.  Steve looks forward to using his skills as an organizer and his background in entertainment to build strong teams and work towards passing CalCare – California's Medicare for All Plan — taking climate action, addressing our homeless crisis and ensuring that those seeking treatment get the support they need.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Archie on Brit Box and Still on Apple +.Californians! That includes Brexit, which has produced yet another wanker in the revolving door prime minister shambles that has been going on for the last six years. We share our doubts that a guy worth more than King Charles has the interests of the common man in mind and extend our sympathy to our British listeners.   Back in the states, the midterms are heating up – and “heating up”, in modern American parlance, means new coup plots are being hatched, new insurrectionists are volunteering to be vote counters, and new upstanding citizens are being threatened with death or prison for the crime of…voting. And what is Merrick Garland, who vowed to protect the elections, doing about it? As usual, nothing! His free pass to the January 6 attackers have left us wary of more post-election violence to come, and the admin's refusal to protect voting rights leaves us concerned about the ability of our fellow Americans to cast their ballot. Kate talks about how this extremist school board got elected in the first place and why it's so important to engage in local politics.  Then Jasmine sits down with Yasmin Radjy, the new Executive Director of Swing Left. Jasmine is a Swing Left endorsed candidate, so this conversation is a match made in heaven. Jasmine and Yasmin talk about the important work Swing Left is doing to mobilize voters, how we can do a better job of talking up all the recent Democratic victories, and the power of suburban women. They even find a little time to chat about cute babies and Gossip Girl. Finally, Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel raise a glass to labor unions, fun campaign events, and fighting for democracy in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you're listening to this podcast, you know the importance of the upcoming elections and you want to turn out all your friends to vote. But you might still want a little help having effective and persuasive conversations. Join us on Thursday September 8 for a special Troublemaker Training with Jess McIntosh. The Marketing Chat Podcast
Easy Steps for Everyday Activism with Elaine Romanelli

I'm chatting with singer/songwriter and long-time activist Elaine Romanelli about easy ways to make activism a part of your everyday life. No, you don't have to march on Washington, if that's not your thing! Elaine explains how activism is like a pedicure. You can get by and just cut your nails, or you can go for the full spa treatment and totally nourish yourself. Take a listen to find out what she means! As an entrepreneur herself, Elaine talks about how important it is to outsource as much as you can in both your business and your daily life. She discusses self-care and “other-care”—not where we're taking care of others, but rather where we have other people take care of us. Imagine that! We discuss how exhausted everyone is from the constant barrage of bad news, where this thing doesn't get reported because it's not as “bad” as that thing. And we chat about developing a system of replenishment, in contrast to the usual escapism that ends up depleting us even more. Elaine wants organizations, politicians, and us to stop thinking of activism as an emergency situation because it's something we have to be in for the long haul. Thus the focus of this episode: Finding easy ways to build activism into your daily life… in a way that fills you up rather than dragging you down. — Links mentioned in the episode: Find Elaine at http://www.elaineromanelli.com (http://www.elaineromanelli.com)  Contact Elaine at elaine@elaineromanelli.com  Postcards to Voters — https://postcardstovoters.org (https://postcardstovoters.org) Swing Left — https://swingleft.org (https://swingleft.org)  https://www.amazon.com/We-Should-All-Be-Millionaires-ebook/dp/B08BYYMZG3/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=we+should+all+be+millionaires+rachel+rodgers&qid=1659923963&sprefix=we+should,aps,150&sr=8-1 (We Should All Be Millionaires: A Woman's Guide to Earning More, Building Wealth, and Gaining Economic Power) by Rachel Rodgers https://www.angelakellysmith.com/podcast/elaine-romanelli-easy-steps-for-everyday-activism (Link to this episode) — Join the Women Podcasters Academy at http://womenpodcastersacademy.com (womenpodcastersacademy.com) For information on website design and marketing services, visit http://angelakellysmith.com (angelakellysmith.com) Contact Kelly at hello@angelakellysmith.com Save 50% with http://share.honeybook.com/angelakellysmith (Honeybook) Music by Gvidon Mentioned in this episode: The Podcast Launch Playbook -- If you've been thinking about starting your own podcast, The Podcast Launch Playbook will help you do it—step-by-step, super-simple, exactly what you need to go from idea to launch! This episode features Stacy Kramer who first came on the podcast two years ago as a newly activated Democratic fundraiser who was making fundraising more Democratic. But after the disappointing down ballot results for Democrats in 2020, she took a hard look at what had gone wrong and realized that giving large amounts of money directly to candidates and campaigns is not a winning strategy. Now she has changed activist gears and is a consultant at Blueprint, a division of the political action group Swing Left. At Blueprint, Stacy is dedicating her time to building up local grassroots civics groups in order to build Democratic infrastructure so that Democrats can win. Stacy and Nancy talk about the law of diminishing returns when it comes to campaign giving, how Republicans have been successfully cultivating the grassroots for decades, and the expertise that Blueprint provides, giving donors the assurance that their gifts will have maximum impact. To learn more about Blueprint, go to http://blueprint.swingleft.org (blueprint.swingleft.org) or email Stacy at stacykramer@me.com.
