Do you need game publishing to ship your game successfully? What does a leader in a publishing organization truly do? Join us for a conversation with Elizabeth Howard, an industry veteran with over 20 years of experience across Aspyr, 2K, and Bungie, where she led publishing and production. Elizabeth views game development and publishing as two parts working together to ship games, defining publishing as everything outside of dev. This episode explores the nature of game publishing, the historical dev-pub divide, and the need for greater integration and shared goals in today's complex market. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why publishing is about selling the game, not building it How shared goals between devs and publishers drive success The mistake most indie devs make Why every indie game needs a real publishing strategy What publishers really look for: risk, culture fit, and audience Why dev and publishing should be seen as one connected system Learn more about Elizabeth Howard: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabethhoward Resources mentioned:: Aspyr: https://www.aspyr.com/ 2K Games: https://www.2k.com/ Bungie: https://www.bungie.net/ Digital Bandidos: https://www.digitalbandidos.com/ In today's complex and costly industry, strategic planning and effective estimation can help you succeed. The Edge of Fate promises one of Destiny 2's biggest shake-ups yet, being Destiny 3 in all but name. That means the expansion is bringing fresh gear systems, new mods, and major endgame rewards. Let's dive in. Join the DiscordThis week on Tower Casuals, Josh Finney and Corey Dirrig talk through all the big Destiny 2 news as we get closer to the launch of The Edge of Fate on July 15. Bungie hosted a developer stream, shared a new Rite of the Nine challenge, and announced the hosts for the upcoming World First Raid Race. With Bungie Day and GCX coming soon too, there's a lot happening in the Destiny world, and Josh and Corey break it all down. One of the biggest changes is the new five-tier gear system. Each tier adds more perks, better stats, and cool visual effects, like blue flame combat flair on Tier 5 weapons. This makes it easier for players to see how valuable a piece of gear really is. Whether you're chasing the best builds or just want to look awesome, the new system gives more reasons to keep playing and upgrading. They also talk about new seasonal mods that can be used on more weapons. These mods let you do things like deal extra damage to certain enemies or cause explosions after building up charges. It's a big boost for buildcrafting and adds more ways to play and customize your loadout. Finally, Josh and Corey touch on some economy and power level updates, as well as the return of open access for Destiny 2, making it easier for new players to jump in. With so many changes and events coming, The Edge of Fate is shaping up to be a huge moment for the game—and fans have a lot to look forward to.Thank you for watching or listening to Tower Casuals: The Destiny Podcast by Tower Casuals and Boss Rush Media. To be apathetic to something is to experience a lack of feeling or emotion in response to an event. For the Dukes, it's the word of the show. Xbox has been mismanaged for an entire generation and it has come at the cost of losing world class talents alongside studios. It was just in 2024 that we lost Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Roundhouse Studios, and Alpha Dog Games. There was also the formidable Toys For Bob that went independent. That alone was more than enough to last us a generation, but today we learned that Xbox has closed down the studio they started back in 2018: The Initiative. Alongside that, Rare's Everwild has been canceled on top of a new IP from Zenimax Online Studios. There's no other way to slice it. For Xbox to improve, leadership must be held accountable. The question is if they ever will and given how situations at teams like Bungie have gone down, we expect a meek, weak willed level of accountability to the bloodbath at Microsoft this week. Indeed, much of the frustration is built off the back of constant, mind-numbing, inconsistent messaging. It was only in February that CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, said Everwild was really shaping up. It was canceled today. With such wishy-washy messaging to their fans, the brand is at a point where no one can believe anything they say. Sure, a partnership with AMD to do next-generation consoles was announced within the last month. How can we trust that? It's the lowest level of trust asked of a consumer that you can believe an announcement when you see it. Instead, the only message we're left with is that if you're not a mega-hit in the making, Xbox wants to have no part of you. What does this say to teams like Compulsion and Ninja Theory or larger developers like Obsidian that like to split off in pursuit of smaller titles? It's amusing that Xbox has done this in the name of creating a sustainable business yet their methods and approach to making games is arguably the least sustainable thing we've seen. They're all in on a subscription service while putting tens of millions of dollars into making games. How it'll all shake up will be interesting to watch, but many of us know how this story will end. This Week: Bungie’s long-awaited shooter Marathon gets delayed, Lies of P hits a huge milestone and Donkey Kong Bananza gets its own dedicated Nintendo Direct and we've got all the details! Plus, Xbox teams up with AMD for next-gen hardware, and we break down all the games coming out this week. Our special guest Lucy James gives us her take on why Marathon got delayed and we discuss our Switch 2 favorites as well as our take on PlayStation and Xbox returning to the handheld market.
On this week's sode, WB Games makes some more brilliant business moves, Nexus Mods has been taken over by venture capital, and Bungie has finally committed to delaying Marathon. Then we do another listener top ten and give a first impression rose to Undermine 2. Peterson selects his Dice game.
Sony's recent PlayStation-centric corporate presentation illustrated just how powerful their gaming vertical is. Indeed, PlayStation 5 has already generated more revenue for the company than PS1, PS2, and PS3 combined, and in the last five years, Sony has netted more in profit from gaming than it did in all 26 prior years the brand has existed, combined. Within their presentation was a lot of interesting data, quotes, anecdotes, and more to comb through, and we do that with a fine-tooth comb. We also wonder why the video presentation was so awkward, stilted, and choreographed. Can these people not speak extemporaneously and off-the-cuff? But we digress! Then, we get into other pertinent news of the week: Bungie's indefinite delay of Marathon, rumors of Sony's potential interest in Warner Bros., fresh PlayStation 5 and 6 handheld rumors, and more. Then, we end the show (as we always do) with listener inquiries. Is Hermen Hulst truly to blame for PlayStation's serious first party woes? When will Ghost Story's Judas launch? Is controller rumble and vibration an important component of our gameplay experiences? The last couple of weeks for Bungie have been nothing short of catastrophic, calling into question whether their upcoming extraction shooter Marathon has any chance at all in finding market success. We've long discussed whether Sony should have bought Bungie at all (they shouldn't have), but now that they're so deeply invested, how do they get the team out of this mess? And what does all of this hullabaloo -- about stolen art, poorly-reviewed gameplay, and lackluster audience reaction -- say about the team's future, full stop? Meanwhile, things aren't much better north of the border, where Quebec-based Haven recently parted ways with founder and once-famous producer Jade Raymond, who has now left three different teams without any sort of release. Is Fairgame$ DOA? Maybe not, but we have lots of new information on the recent closed test of the game under the moniker Project Hearts, and... well... it's not sounding great. Also: MLB: The Show is seemingly getting a mobile release, PlayStation Stars is going away unceremoniously, Stellar Blade 2 is in active development, Xbox's Hellblade II is coming to PS5, Kojima's Physint is at least five more years away, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Keeping in mind Sony's typical naming conventions, what will PlayStation 6's controller be called? Do we also find delight in Darth Vader's AI voice in Fortnite? Is the PS5 Pro truly worth purchasing before prices likely go up? Has Chris ever seen a ghost? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement.Timestamps: 0:00:00 - Intro00:44:13 - Best man bromance00:46:03 - ghoul-ing01:04:41 - Haven/Jade Raymond reflections01:37:51 - Bungie art theft reflections02:33:15 - MLB: The Show mobile02:38:25 - PlayStation Stars is over02:51:24 - Stellar Blade sequel coming02:56:49 - Kojima's next game is far off03:01:41 - Hellblade 2 is coming to PS503:05:56 - Randy Pitchford on Borderlands 4 pricing03:26:21 - Circana data03:35:21 - New Naughty Dog logo03:37:18 - Doom: The Dark Ages surpasses three million players03:40:44 - What Are We Playing (Doom The Dark Ages, Stardew Valley, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Shovel Knight Dig)04:05:34 - Iconic PlayStation Games04:16:19 - ChatGPT game hints04:19:15 - DualSense 2?4:22:38 - AI Vader in Fortnite04:28:19 - "Editions" releases04:35:04 - Current thoughts on PS5 Pro Learn more about your ad choices.
