In today's Daily Fix:After Sony's bombshell anouncement that they would no longer release first-party titles on physical discs, many gamers took to the PlayStation Network webpage to unsubscribe from PlayStation Plus. But analysts say that even if hundreds of thousands of gamers unsubbed from PS Plus, it's a drop in the bucket to PlayStation's overall business model and would likely not persuade them to keep supporting physical media. In other gaming news, Bernie Sanders has taken aim at Xbox, posting on social media that the company's mass layoffs and hardware price troubles are more evidence that corporate tax breaks do nothing to create or even save jobs. And on a bittersweet note, Bungie offered a farewell gift for their Destiny 2 fans as a 'thank you' for years of support before formally ending major updates for the game.

The gaming industry in the Pacific Northwest has been dealt some major blows in the past few weeks. Monday, Microsoft announced it would be cutting thousands of full time employees and “restructuring” their XBox division, where 1,600 jobs were cut. It’s not immediately clear how many of those are Washington-based. Last month, Bellevue based game studio Bungie announced it would be laying off almost 300 full time employees here in the state. Remap Radio's Rob Zacny and Emanuel dive deep into their current favorite game, Marathon, and what its middling success says about the future of games. If you listen to the 404 Media podcast by now you probably realized that Joe and I are a little obsessed with a game called Marathon. I'm embarrassed to say that I've played it for almost 300 hours since it was released in March. But as much as we're enjoying it, and there are thousands of players who feel the same, Marathon so far has failed to find the audience we'd expect from the developer that made Halo, Destiny, and which a few years ago acquired by PlayStation for more than $3 billion. It's bad news for Marathon fans and a good sign for how much the video game business has changed over the years.
