Veteran game designer Richard Rouse III joins us to revisit his journey from Bungie's early Macintosh games to Centipede 3D and The Suffering. Sony's mishandling of its games-as-a-service initiative is well-worn territory here on Sacred Symbols, but that doesn't mean the fallout doesn't persist. This time around, Guerrilla's new multiplayer title Horizon: Hunters Gathering is the focal point. Based on recent reporting, it appears Sony is having the dev team rework the game to remove live service and other persistent elements, and its fate will be decided by December, with cancellation still very much on the table. Bungie and Marathon, Haven and Fairgames, Firewalk and Concord, Naughty Dog and The Last of Us Online, the Deviation-turned-Dark Outlaw project, Bluepoint and God of War Online, a cancelled multiplayer Spider-Man game at Insomniac, Twisted Metal never getting far off the ground at Lucid... Truly, it's enough already. Plus: Until Dawn star Hayden Panettiere sadly passes away at 37 years old, Grand Theft Auto VI suffers a catastrophic leak, Hiroko Totoki talks to the Wall Street Journal about Sony's move away from tech and towards entertainment, Square Enix swears Kingdom Hearts IV will launch in 2027, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is Naughty Dog's high-caliber approach ultimately unsustainable? Have we lost sight of the reality of how bad the experience of using physical media actually is? How can we both run Sacred Symbols effectively while ignoring the endless, persistent, and unrealistic negativity? Will Colin ultimately push Dustin over the line by insisting he's Japanese? In this episode, host Dirk Knemeyer is joined by co-host David Heron, a veteran game executive known for his six-year tenure at Warner Brothers, to discuss the "great contraction" currently hitting the industry. They explore why thousands of jobs are being lost at major publishers like Microsoft, Sony, and Bungie even as total consumer spending on games remains high. David provides an insider's look at his own job hunt, the shift from product-based sales to low-risk live-service models, and how the drying up of international institutional funding has decimated the mid-market studio. Listeners will also get a fascinating preview of David's upcoming experiments with AI as a design "mentee" that can handle the grunt work of procedural generation while leaving the creative "thumbprint" to the human designer.
Welcome back to Retro Renegades! Tonight we're talking web-slinging, questionable physics, ridiculous villains, and enough cheap beer to make us think we actually have Spider-Man's reflexes. Spoiler: we don't.So crack open a beer, put the kids to bed, and join us as we climb walls, punch bad guys, fall off buildings, and ask the important question: “How the hell did Spider-Man survive this game without drinking?”
Scott and Josh discuss replaying Bungie's Halo trilogy, and give their take on GTA VI's big reveal dropping on Netflix. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Welcome back to Retro Renegades! Tonight we're cracking open some cold beers, loading up Halo: Campaign Evolved, and proving that humanity's greatest weapon isn't the Master Chief... it's poor decision-making after the third pint. We'll be blasting Covenant, arguing over who stole the Warthog, and celebrating every accidental grenade death like it's an Olympic event. So grab your favorite brew, buckle up, and let's save humanity—one beer and one headshot at a time. Cheers!"

In this episode, we passionately argue that this is in fact the fifth modern Doom game in the last decade, an endlessly inventive, engaging, and replayable game in its own right that officially elevates the modern era of Doom into the same conversation as Halo during the Bungie years. Topics include: an ever-evolving endgame, signature weapons, the challenges of FPS boss fights, the secret to replayable campaigns, and how this game is a sequel to every single modern Doom game at the same time. We're more than a week removed from the controversial decision to scrap new physical releases for PlayStation hardware beginning in early 2028, and even with a robust outpouring of rage from a portion of its hardcore audience, Sony doesn't seem like it's going to budge. This has come to surprise some people; yet, the longer Sony continues its silence on the topic, the more unlikely it'll be that anything will change. Will the Japanese megacorporation's wait-and-see approach pay off? Is there still time to turn the ship around? Are physical buyers vastly overestimating their power and positioning? There's much more to discuss surrounding the worst period of PR for the PlayStation brand since 2011. Other news this week includes furor over language in the European PSN's terms of service, drama surrounding Marvel Tokon's release on Steam, significant layoffs at Xbox that deeply affect PlayStation-aligned developers like id and Obsidian, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is it weird that Sony executives sold more than $10 million in stock after their infamous physical games announcement? What's going on with EA's insane monetization policies in College Football 27? Why couldn't Bluepoint spin-out from Sony like Microsoft is allowing some of its teams to do? Does Dustin have similarly arcane powers as Brad, just pointed in the opposite direction? Remap Radio's Rob Zacny and Emanuel dive deep into their current favorite game, Marathon, and what its middling success says about the future of games. If you listen to the 404 Media podcast by now you probably realized that Joe and I are a little obsessed with a game called Marathon. I'm embarrassed to say that I've played it for almost 300 hours since it was released in March. But as much as we're enjoying it, and there are thousands of players who feel the same, Marathon so far has failed to find the audience we'd expect from the developer that made Halo, Destiny, and which a few years ago acquired by PlayStation for more than $3 billion. It's bad news for Marathon fans and a good sign for how much the video game business has changed over the years. I wanted to have Remap Radio host Robert Zacny on the podcast because much like me and Joe, he's been obsessed with Marathon as well. One of Rob's greatest skills is dissecting how and why games get their hooks into us, and what a game's popularity, or lack thereof in Marathon's case, might reveal about the state of the industry and culture more broadly. The bottom continues to fall out from the games industry. Approximately five impending studio closures was simply not enough. Here comes PlayStation who is shutting down their entire physical game operation. It's never been more clear than right now that many of us who have been gaming since the 90s are now truly considered "the old guard" as we continue to face off against staggering changes at a breakneck speed. Sony has confirmed that beginning in 2028, new PlayStation releases will no longer receive physical disc versions. We discuss what this means for collectors, game preservation, retailers, and whether this is the first step toward an all-digital PlayStation future. We also break down Bungie's massive layoffs following the end of Destiny 2's content roadmap, what the studio's future looks like under Sony, and why Marathon has become one of PlayStation's biggest challenges. Plus, we discuss reports that Xbox has dropped funding for IO Interactive's Project Fantasy, PlayStation's next-generation hardware strategy, concerns surrounding PS6 pricing, declining PS5 sales, and what all of these developments mean for the future of the gaming industry. Whoa, Shuhei! We’ve got a lot to talk about. Stack it up and feel the power of a tremendous trio! Join Matt, Alex and Yield as they discuss, among other things, Darksiders Warmastered Edition, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Starfox, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and Grand Theft Auto VI. What’s more, we lament layoffs at Bungie and Electronic Arts, and we delve into pricing options for Valve’s Steam Machine. We know that gaming has never been cheap, but we’re getting sick of all these price increases. If prices continue on an upward trajectory, at this rate, then it becomes harder (and harder) to blame consumers for tightening their spending. And if you think that’s all, then you’ve got another thing coming! As usual, the news is full of surprises. We hit the high notes, and we hit the low notes, but we’ll always bring the banter. What are you waiting for? Dive in! As always, the opinions fly fast and heavy! Look out for this super-sized show, as the seemingly smallest conversation veers off into a multiverse of chit-chat. Sounds cool, huh? That’s the fancy way of saying “derailment.” And there’s plenty of that to go around! Let’s dance, Heroes of the XMB! In a bit of big news that would make the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles proud, iHeartRadio, Pandora and Spotify host episodes of Trophy Whores. It's a tremendous honor for the show to be part of three massive and respected entertainment communities, and Proven Gamer have only the fans to thank for pushing the podcast to soaring heights. CJ and Greg wade through a genuinely grim news pile: GTA VI's pricing and "code in a box" physical edition, the memory crisis pushing console prices toward $1,000, Valve's Steam Machine sticker shock, Xbox's worst sales month on record, and fresh layoffs at Bungie. There's a sliver of good news in a Sea of Thieves movie, and then it's on to what they've been playing — Star Fox, the Rhythm Heaven Groove demo, Picross, Gitaroo Man, and Vampire Crawlers. With Grand Theft Auto VI finally launching this November, we've been left without a key piece of information: Its price. Conjecture and prognostication has run rampant, but now we have confirmation that GTA6's base cost is $80 in the United States, with a $100 version offering players some perks and unlocks. With our long-awaited trip down to Leonida drawing closer on the horizon, we've much to discuss, including our hype level, whether we'll buy the base or special edition, the lack of a real physical version, and -- perhaps most intriguingly -- no new trailer or gameplay videos to help sell a product that (let's be honest) probably doesn't need much help to begin with. Other news this week includes significant layoffs at Sony-owned Bungie, indications that God of War: Laufey may launch as early as Q1 2027, more delisted shovelware tripe removed from PlayStation Store, executive-level issues at FromSoft, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What's with Steam Machine's absurd price? Should Sony look to invest in any of Xbox's distressed assets? Why did PlayStation even bother publishing Midnight Murder Club if they were only going to ignore it? Will Chris and Colin one day have their shared ex-psychiatrist on the show to discuss our many mental ailments? This week on The Expansion Pass, we're tackling one of the biggest questions facing the gaming industry: is gaming becoming too expensive? Microsoft has announced significant Xbox console price increases, Grand Theft Auto VI is launching at $80, and Nintendo's Switch 2 continues to post impressive early sales despite rising hardware costs. We discuss what these changes mean for players, whether premium pricing is becoming the new normal, and how publishers are adapting to an increasingly expensive market. We also share our impressions of Star Fox and 007 First Light, discuss the surprising value proposition of the Steam Machine, examine Bungie's latest layoffs and Marathon's uncertain future, and look at why Nintendo's first-party strategy continues to drive hardware sales. In this episode: Xbox console price increases explained GTA VI's $80 launch price Switch 2 sales momentum Steam Machine pricing reactions Star Fox review impressions 007 First Light impressions Bungie layoffs & Marathon Nintendo's first-party strategy What we've been playing If you enjoy thoughtful gaming discussions without the console war noise, subscribe to The Expansion Pass on your favorite podcast platform and join us live each week on YouTube.
