CO-HOST | Make Money by Staying Human: The Hidden Cost of AI Replacing Creativity

In this candid and often hilarious conversation, Travis Chappell and producer Eric dive into one of the most controversial topics in technology today: AI-generated content and the growing trend of recreating deceased celebrities through artificial intelligence. Sparked by news that Stan Lee's voice and likeness have been licensed for AI-generated projects, the discussion explores the ethical implications of digital resurrection, creative authenticity, intellectual property, and what makes great art truly human. Along the way, Travis and Eric examine where AI can provide real value—and where it risks undermining the very creativity it claims to enhance. On this episode we talk about: The ethics of using AI to recreate deceased celebrities and public figures Why authentic human creativity is difficult to replicate with AI The difference between AI as a productivity tool versus a creative replacement How limitations, imperfections, and artistic interpretation contribute to great storytelling The future of entertainment, intellectual property, and digital likeness rights Top 3 Takeaways Technology should enhance human creativity, not replace the people who create meaningful art and stories. What makes iconic characters and performances memorable is often the unique interpretation that actors, writers, and creators bring to them—not perfect replication. AI can be an incredibly powerful tool for research, analysis, and productivity, but ethical boundaries become far more complicated when it begins speaking, acting, or creating on behalf of real people. Notable Quotes "What makes all the cameos cool is that it was actually Stan Lee on set doing them." "Part of what's cool about movies is the things that they did in spite of it not being perfect." "The biggest problem with AI is people." The Guys are back to hear more from Kevin Ivey, a local boy of sorts who rose in the ranks from minimum wage editor/reporter at CNN to VP of Strategic Planning and Advanced Projects (or something even cooler than that.) In part 2 of Robbie's interview with Kevin, listeners get the inside scoop on Fidel Castro, who in turn gives his own inside scoop.  From Meridian, MS to Ted Turner's box at Braves Stadium, it's an interview not to be missed.   Art and Jay did get to come in and share their Geeks, though they may soon be replaced by Stan Lee.  Spider-Noir is out and Jay likes what he sees so far.  Robbie is looking forward to the new Spider Man movie, and is also thankful Tom Holland didn't get to pick the title.  Come for the “Ivey Interview” part 2, stay for spider news!

It's June and so what better way to usher in the summer than to sit inside a railway arch and talk about geeky stuff! Mike shows off his elephant impression, Doug is in a Good Place and Paul is just downright rude. Elsewhere Nicholas Cage takes us back to formula, Basil Brush commits a war crime, and the digital spirit of Stan Lee drops by for what sounds like a pretty par-for-the-course episode! This week on Grumpy Old Geeks, Brian and Jason once again survey the smoldering wreckage of the tech industry and discover that the people building the future are increasingly being sued by governments, publishers, customers, employees, and occasionally reality itself. California is coming after 23andMe over its catastrophic data breach, Florida is taking a swing at OpenAI, CNN has joined the ever-growing conga line of companies suing Perplexity, and Meta somehow decided the solution to improving AI is recording employees' every mouse click while generously allowing them a whole 30-minute privacy break. Meanwhile, Google's own engineers are sharing memes about how much Google's AI tools suck, Microsoft apparently wants users addicted to its new AI assistant - first taste's free! - and Anthropic is preparing to go public with a valuation that makes even the most irrational dot-com era investor look financially responsible. The AI arms race continues producing exactly the kinds of outcomes you'd expect when venture capitalists start huffing their own press releases. Instagram's AI support bot reportedly helped hackers steal accounts because apparently "Are you sure you're the owner?" was considered an optional step. Suno raised another $400 million while fighting copyright lawsuits, Paramount+ seems to have let AI create the ugliest Star Trek thumbnail in Federation history, and Stan Lee has now been digitally resurrected because modern capitalism looked at death and said, "Nice try." Over in transportation, BYD is so confident in its self-driving technology that it's willing to pay for your accidents, while Tesla owners are discovering their old Full Self-Driving contracts may have quietly received software updates of the legal variety. Somewhere in a conference room, a lawyer just whispered, "Let's not put that in writing," ten years too late.Elsewhere, governments worldwide continue their ongoing experiment of raising children by confiscating smartphones. Malaysia has implemented a social media ban for kids under 16, Poland wants phones and smartwatches locked away at school, and Kentucky schools just collected $27 million from social media companies accused of building products as addictive as cigarettes.Dave Bittner drops by for a visit and we discuss Spotify listeners apparently preferring old music because new music keeps getting algorithmically focus-grouped into oblivion and a healthy dose of Star Wars, Downton Abbey, Derry Girls, Lego, books, gadgets, and AI-generated jazz. Add it all up and you've got another week where the only thing moving faster than technology is the legal department trying to keep up.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.Shopify - Sign up for your one-dollar-per-month trial today at Shopify.com/grumpyPrivate Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel dropped the first full trailer for X-Men '97 Season 2 this week, confirming a July 1 premiere on Disney+ and Apocalypse as the season's central threat. The nine-episode season picks up from the Season 1 finale with the X-Men scattered across time from ancient Egypt to the far future, while those left behind in the '90s work to bring them back, with the trailer also sneaking in a Morph-as-Deadpool shapeshifting moment for good measure. A third season is already in production. On the Doomsday front, Joe and Anthony Russo posted a series of cryptic images to Instagram with various hints and teases towards an Avengers: Doomsday reveal connected to this week's SXSW Film Festival in London; as of Tuesday morning, the hype seems to have all been for a Doctor Doom themed coffee shop pop-up for attendees of the festival. James Gunn took to Instagram this week with a fit check from the set of Superman: Man of Tomorrow, revealing a first look at Nicholas Hoult in Lex Luthor's iconic mech-suit, which in the comics gives Luthor superhuman strength, flight, and force fields. The image also appears to show a sandy, otherworldly backdrop, leaving plenty to speculate about heading into the film's 2027 release. A24's Backrooms had one of the biggest opening weekends of the year, pulling in 81 million dollars domestically and 118 million worldwide in its debut, the largest opening in A24 history and more than triple what Civil War earned in 2024. The film was adapted from the viral YouTube web series by its creator Kane Parsons, who at 20 years old is now the youngest filmmaker ever to open a number one film, and was produced for roughly 10 million dollars. Meanwhile The Mandalorian and Grogu fell to third place after its second week in theaters with a 69% drop.Prime Video has renewed The Rings of Power for a fourth season ahead of its Season 3 debut later this year, with early preproduction beginning this fall and filming targeted for early 2027.A24 has released the first trailer for Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen of Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator fame, from acclaimed documentarian Lance Oppenheim, with the film set to premiere this fall.ElevenLabs has struck a deal with the estate of Stan Lee, licensing the Marvel legend's voice and likeness for AI-generated content available both to app users and commercial partners. The Minecraft Movie sequel now has a title: A Minecraft Movie Squared, due in theaters next July.HBO has dropped the full trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3, offering the first look at the season's major battle sequences, with the show returning June 21st.Anna Kendrick has been tapped to direct Netflix's adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.During Playstation's annual State of Play showcase, God of War: Laufey was announced to be the next entry in the franchise and an extended gameplay trailer for Insomaniac's Wolverine was released online.

Episode Summary Nicolas Cage finally gets to be Nicolas Cage, and Frank has thoughts. This week the guys are back in studio to break down the new Spider-Noir series, the ElevenLabs deal recreating Stan Lee's voice that has fans up in arms, and the freshly revealed Minecraft Movie Squared logo and Matt Berry casting. Along the way they realize the Herobrine creepypasta they believed for years was apparently made up the whole time. The back half turns into a full 2026 mid-year check-in, ranking the year's biggest surprises like Wonder Man and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms while looking ahead to Clayface, Spider-Man Brand New Day, and House of the Dragon. Then comic writer Bill Stoddard joins to talk Murder Mouse, the gleefully unhinged book Frank describes as Chuck E. Cheese meets Disneyland meets an 80s slasher flick. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Intro, In-Studio Catch-Up, and Patreon Thanks 02:32 Minecraft Movie Squared and the Herobrine Myth 08:10 Stan Lee's AI Voice and the ElevenLabs Backlash 16:42 Spider-Noir Review 25:22 2026 Mid-Year Check-In: Movies and Shows 34:15 What's Coming Up Next: Clayface, BioShock Dreams, and More 50:32 Guest Interview: Bill Stoddard on Murder Mouse 1:02:55 Weekly Picks and Comics for the DC Blackout Key Takeaways The Minecraft Movie Squared logo sparks end-game theories, Matt Berry joins the cast, and the crew comes to terms with the Herobrine creepypasta being fabricated rather than real lore. ElevenLabs and the company holding Stan Lee's likeness launch an AI voice to read public library books, drawing heavy backlash, especially given Lee sued over his likeness rights back in 2018. Spider-Noir lands a low 8 from Frank and a 10 out of 10 from Squeaks, with the color and black-and-white toggle and the Ben Reilly name nod as standout details, though the detective pacing runs slow for modern viewers. The mid-year review crowns Wonder Man, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and The Boys finale as highlights, with Clayface, Spider-Man Brand New Day, House of the Dragon, and Lanterns leading the watchlist. A running rant on movie theater popcorn buckets covers the Lobo motorcycle, the 80 dollar Galactus, and the Masters of the Universe sword and castle, plus why studios keep missing the collectibles opportunity. Bill Stoddard breaks down the origin of Murder Mouse, the fourth-wall humor inspired by Looney Tunes, the new Head Case Comics label, and a planned From Dusk Till Dawn style one-shot. Quotes "It's legal, but not right." "It takes the value out of the voice, the words they spoke when they were alive." "Basically, Chuck E. Cheese meets Disneyland meets an 80s slasher flick." "What if the classic Mickey Mouse saw how the world was today?" "Wonder Man just came out of nowhere." On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Zack Kaplan to talk about two ambitious new projects that tap into some of today's biggest anxieties. First up is Only the Savage Are Left, Kaplan's new post-apocalyptic series with Stefano Raffaele, which imagines a world overrun by a virus that transforms people into monsters. During the conversation, Kaplan digs into the moral dilemmas at the heart of the series, the challenge of creating a new kind of monster apocalypse, and why the story's central romance is just as important as its horror. We also discuss The Smart Division, his upcoming AI-driven crime thriller with John Pearson, exploring how rapidly advancing technology, generational divides, and questions about institutional trust shaped the book's premise. What was the starting point for the virus concept, and how did you land on the idea that the “cure” is tied to killing another infected person? There's an early suggestion in the book that civilization didn't collapse because people failed to work together, but because they turned on each other. How much of this story is meant to reflect real-world anxieties about how fragile social order really is? You've described the idea that “civilized society is a failed experiment.” How does that philosophy shape Ryder's journey, especially as someone who begins the story outside that cycle of violence? Ryder starts off relatively sheltered, living behind a wall and seemingly untouched by the infection. What interested you about telling a story through a character who hasn't yet been forced to compromise his morality? The relationship that pulls Ryder out into the world feels central to the emotional core of the book. How did you approach balancing that love story with the brutality of the setting? Without spoiling too much, how does the virus actually work on a thematic level? Is it purely biological, or is it also meant to represent something more psychological or societal? As Ryder encounters other survivors and “monster-killers,” how do you approach defining who the real monsters are in this world? Shifting to The Smart Division, the idea of an AI being involved in a “perfect murder” is chillingly plausible. What kind of real-world advancements in AI or predictive tech inspired this story? The pairing of a Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent feels like a classic odd-couple dynamic. What makes that contrast especially interesting in a story about artificial intelligence and crime? Fun one: if you had to survive in the world of Only the Savage Are Left, what's your strategy in the first 24 hours… and are you making it out alive?

In this episode Ode (@thatsod.e / @thatsod_e) and Mo "Kid" Licorish (@licorishislegit) react to viral moments and heavyweight confessions: Ray J's knockout against Supa Hot Fire and the photos that followed spark questions about a possible rigged fight and a familiar publicity pattern, while Pope Leo XIV's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas prompts discussion of AI and an unprecedented apology for the Catholic Church's role in slavery. The hosts parse the pope's Gandalf-quoting warning about AI exploitation and call out the real human labor—underpaid transcription and moderation work—that underpins supposedly automated systems.Ode and Mo also cover Stephen Colbert's surprise appearance on Only in Monroe and CBS's takedown-reversal, plus Gucci Mane's memoir Episodes and his public disclosure of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia—Keisha Kaur's Breakfast Club account of emergency interventions is examined as an example of family caregiving under strain. The episode closes with pop-topics energy (Tyrese/Club Shay Shay confusion, Eleven Labs' Stan Lee voice controversy, Tiny Desk Black Music Month additions) and a pointed mix of humor and critique.

Ron White is a two-time USA Memory Champion, U.S. Navy veteran, and one of the world's foremost memory training experts. Known as the "Brain Athlete," he has dedicated his career to proving that extraordinary memory is not a gift — it's a trainable skill. A Texas-based entrepreneur and speaker, White first discovered memory techniques in 1991 at age 18 and has spent over three decades mastering and teaching them. He won back-to-back USA Memory Championships in 2009 and 2010 and held the national record for the fastest to memorize a shuffled deck of cards in one minute and 27 seconds. He has appeared on the History Channel's Stan Lee's Superhumans, National Geographic's Brain Games, and Fox's Superhuman with Kal Penn and Mike Tyson, as well as Good Morning America, Fox & Friends, and CBS Evening News. After September 11th, White joined the U.S. Navy Reserve as an intelligence specialist and deployed to Afghanistan in 2007, serving until 2010. That experience inspired what he considers his most important work: memorizing the names, ranks, and order of death of more than 2,300 American service members killed in Afghanistan — over 7,000 words committed to memory over 10 months. He travels the country writing those names from memory on a 52-foot memorial wall, a tribute built on a simple message: "You are not forgotten." Today, White speaks to audiences in over 30 countries and runs Brain Athlete, where he teaches individuals and organizations to improve their memory, read faster, and learn more effectively through his flagship Black Belt Memory program. In 2020, playwrights Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente joined me to talk about transforming their acclaimed stage play King Kirby into an ambitious audio drama. The original play explored the life, imagination, and complicated legacy of comics legend Jack Kirby — from the birth of the Marvel Universe to the battles over credit, ownership, and artistic identity that followed him throughout his career. In this conversation, Crystal and Fred discuss the challenge of adapting such a visually explosive story into a purely audio experience. They break down how sound design, voice performance, and narrative structure became tools to recreate Kirby's cosmic imagination for listeners, while still grounding the story in the emotional realities of Jack's life, his partnership and conflicts with Stan Lee, and the larger history of the comics industry. We also get into the timing of the project during the pandemic-era rise of audio storytelling, why Kirby's struggles over creator rights remain relevant today, and how the medium of audio drama unexpectedly mirrored the intimacy and imagination of old-time radio adventures that inspired Kirby himself. It's a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at honoring one of comics' greatest visionaries while reinventing his story for a new audience. Here's a link to the series https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/king-kirby/id1543433086

We are getting caught up after last week's Book Club discussion, and we are already working on next month's selection of Wonder Woman Historia from DC Comics. If you want to join us for that discussion, send us a note.  A day after we recorded episode 618, we learned of the passing of writer Gerry Conway. Conway was part of the wave of new creators joining comics in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He quickly made his mark, taking over writing chores on Amazing Spider-Man from Stan Lee. Along the way, he helped co-create characters like the Punisher, Firestorm, Power Girl, Ms. Marvel, and many others. Is anyone getting mixed messages from Marvel Comics? A while back, a message went out from senior editorial that they were scaling back events, yet all of last week's Comic Giveaway Day books were intros to upcoming events in Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man and Hulk.  Jerrry finished season 2 of Daredevil and John is keeping up with The Boys.  We have our weekly Pick 3 choices, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. Plus, Cullen has a new trivia question, and John has a look at last week's top ten books. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week.
