This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Wolf Week continues as Sidey, Dan and new dad Jamie sink their teeth into Martin Scorsese's riotous financial crime epic The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau and Joanna Lumley. With Reegs absent and therefore no proper intro to keep things vaguely professional, the dads begin by catching up on what they've been watching. Dan has largely swapped screen time for Cold War spy histories while his wife is away in the Czech Republic for the summer, Jamie has returned to the comforting embrace of Blue Bloods, No Offence and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and Sidey has endured Jason Statham's Mutiny, a revenge-on-a-boat action thriller with suspiciously Die Hard-adjacent poster energy. The Top 5 this week is Wolves, which naturally sends the conversation roaming all over the cultural wilderness. There's Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction, Moro from Princess Mononoke, Teen Wolf and the obvious sporting advantage of being Michael J. Fox with werewolf powers, plus Shrek's Big Bad Wolf and a detour through wolf-related music from Warren Zevon, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Duran Duran, Howlin' Wolf, Steppenwolf, Los Lobos, Wolfmother and Wolf Alice. Liam Neeson's miserable survival odds in The Grey get a mention, as do Bad Wolf and Rose Tyler from Doctor Who, Jack Nicholson in Wolf, Remus Lupin, Dances with Wolves, Portia Crystal from Sing 2, Lupine Howl, the direwolves from Game of Thrones, How Wolves Change Rivers, Rainier Wolfcastle and Oz from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Then it's on to The Wolf of Wall Street, a film the dads note is arriving neatly alongside Jersey's current Martin Scorsese cinema season. They follow Jordan Belfort from his first day as Wall Street pond scum through Matthew McConaughey's career-rescuing lunch scene of coke, booze,chest-thumping and “rookie numbers”, before Black Monday promptly ends any chance of a respectable finance career. From there it's penny stocks, Spike Jonze, 50% commissions and the arrival of Donnie Azoff, whose cousin-wife logic, blinding white teeth and crack-pipe networking help turn Stratton Oakmont into a full-blown fraud machine. Along the way, the dads dig into the film's most notorious moments: the “sell me this pen” lesson, motivational speeches, middle fingers to clients, dwarf tossing, strippers, head shaving, Rob Reiner as Belfort's furious father, Margot Robbie's Naomi making her entrance, Donnie's appalling first impression, the famous 11-second romance, Vegas excess, penicillin shots and a superyacht wedding present. They also cover Kyle Chandler's FBI agent Patrick Denham closing in, Jon Favreau's lawyer trying desperately to make Jordan stop, the Steve Madden IPO, hidden stock ownership, Joanna Lumley's Aunt Emma and the Swiss bank account, plus Jordan's spectacularly arrogant attempt to bribe the FBI with lobster, prostitutes and absolutely no self-awareness. The review also takes in the yacht storm and Italian rescue, the infamous Lemmon Quaaludes sequence with crawling, ham-choking and the destroyed Lamborghini reveal, Jordan wearing a wire while warning Donnie not to incriminate himself, and the ugly final collapse as Naomi demands a divorce, Jordan turns violent and everything finally crashes. By the end, the dads are left wrestling with prison, sales seminars and the uncomfortable question of whether the film really works as a cautionary tale, or whether it is simply too entertaining for its own good. Verdicts are strong across the board. Sidey recommends it, while still insisting it is far too long. Dan also gives it a strong recommend, particularly for the endlessly quotable scenes, and Jamie calls it a must-watch — although preferably consumed as three one-hour chunks rather than one enormous sitting. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Have you ever watched a child fall and, instead of crying, erupt into laughter? It is a moment of pure, unfiltered joy. Dr. Dodd recently had that experience with his four year old grandson while kayaking. After getting confident on the water, his grandson slipped, fell into the lake with a huge splash, and came up dying with laughter. In that moment was a profound spiritual lesson. How many of us, when we get unexpectedly wet in life, can come up laughing?Life is full of detours. We have a plan, a strategy, a direction, and suddenly we are stopped, redirected, or left confused in a fog. The key to navigating these moments is not rigidity, but flexibility. As we trust in the Lord, our God, we can learn to dance with the detours. He promises to take hold of our right hand and guide us, reminding us not to fear, because He will help us. This is the promise that anchors us when our own plans fall apart.

Who gets to imagine humanity's future beyond Earth, and who gets left out? In Episode 2 of Dances with Robots, host Ariane Michaud sits down with Nahum, artist and founder of the Kosmica Institute, and interdisciplinary artist Sage Ni'Ja Whitson to pose a question the space sector rarely asks of itself: not why we go, but who the going is for. Space has always had gatekeepers. From the agencies and billionaires who set the agenda to the cultural assumptions we pack along with the cargo, the story of leaving Earth has mostly been written by a very few. Engaging with Afrofuturism and speculative performance, Nahum and Whitson work in a longer lineage of artists who insist that story can be told otherwise: that a future off-planet could be built on care, imagination, and collective responsibility rather than conquest. This episode of Dances with Robots is supported by The Brown Arts Institute at Brown University and is co-produced by Consciously Produced. Has your life gone exactly like you thought it would? For most of us, the honest answer is no. Our lives are full of unexpected turns, delays, and detours. We plan our steps, but we must also learn to wrestle with the stops. As believers, we need to build a biblical framework for when curveballs are thrown our way, so we can navigate them with confidence and make sense of it all.The great theologian Arthur Pierson once found himself in the study of George Mueller, a man renowned for his faith. Looking through Mueller's personal Bible, Pierson came to Psalm 37:23, which says, “The steps of a godly man are ordered by the Lord.” In the margin, Mueller had written, “And the stops too.” This profound insight reminds us that God is not only in our forward motion but also in the moments He brings us to a halt. When we face a detour, we can trust the promise of Scripture: “For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13).

In this ScreenFish 1on1 Interview, writer and director David Ketterer Spencer discusses SOUVENIR, reflecting on the collaborative process of working with Eric Berryman and Ruby Cruz to bring the story and its characters to life. He explores the idea that we are all “unreliable narrators” of our own experiences and how memory, perspective, and identity shape the stories we tell. David also considers what a stranger might discover about someone's life by simply finding their wallet.SOUVENIR premiered at Dances with Films '26.#souvenir #danceswithfilms #directors #film #movie #interview #podcast #fyp #filmtok

What do dancers have to do with the future of space exploration? This season explores how movement research informs life in microgravity, how choreography structures astronaut training, and what happens when questions of access, capitalism, and imagination extend beyond Earth. If outer space is part of our shared future, who gets to shape it, who gets access, and what, if anything, can artists do about it? In the Season 2 premiere of Dances with Robots, host Ariane Michaud begins an eight-episode journey into the intersection of dance, embodiment, and outer space. Joined by Sydney Skybetter, founder of the Conference for Research on Choreographic Interfaces (CRCI); choreographer Kitsou Dubois; and planetary scientist Adeene Denton, she asks what artists, choreographers, and movers bring to these conversations. This episode of Dances with Robots is supported by The Brown Arts Institute at Brown University, and is co-produced by Consciously Produced. Seems like the best stories happen in the summer, and this episode was all about the stories – from tarpon fishing to wrestling hungry gators and everything in between! The stories came from all directions, too – from the boys themselves, from a couple of OS Hall of Famers, and a bunch of other callers, too. If that wasn’t enough, after the Gemlux Trivia Question, conversation picked up about best outdoor-related movie – Dances with Wolves, Jeremiah Johnson, The Revenant…which one is your favorite? We were taught that space belongs to astronauts, engineers, and billionaires. But if space is part of all our futures, then who gets to shape it should belong to all of us. So what, if anything, can dancers do about it? In Season Two of Dances with Robots, host Ariane Michaud follows that question through conversations with astronauts, scientists, engineers, architects, journalists, and artists, exploring what happens when dance and embodied knowledge enter the conversation about space, technology, and the future. Along the way, one thing becomes clear: space isn't only a technological challenge. It's a social, cultural, and deeply human one. 'As You Like It' puts Shakespeare to music in Grand Marais Scotty Reynolds, producing artistic director of Mixed Precipitation, is shining a light on the Grand Marais Playhouse. The theater is staging a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's “As You Like It" this summer. Music and lyrics are by Shaina Taub, the creator of the Broadway musical “Suffs.” This local production opens Thursday and runs through Aug. 9 at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. This is Artistic and Technical Director Sue Hennessy's final summer production before she retires in spring 2027. She has two more community plays planned for this fall and spring. Reynolds says: “'As You Like It' is one of Shakespeare's fantastical rom-coms, which has lots of fun frolicking and gender bending happening in the forest of Arden. The way [Taub] sets it to music using a multi-generational cast is just really special, fun, magical; it makes you laugh and cry, kind of within 20 seconds, with its sweetness and earnestness.” The Jayhawks headline Nature Rocks in Aitkin Stephanie Mollet loves the arts and music scene of her hometown of Aitken, Minn., where she is the executive director at the Aitken Area Chamber of Commerce. She recommends the annual Nature Rocks concert put on by the Long Lake Conservation Center. The Jayhawks are headlining this year's fifth annual event. It's the Minnesota band's only concert in its home state this summer. Martin Zellar & the Hardways open, though the whole event kicks off with a special performance by kids from Long Lake's camp, who have been learning about live music this week. The concert, a fundraiser for scholarships at the Long Lake Conservation Center, takes place July 18 at the Aitken County Fairgrounds. Attendees should show up early to grab a picnic table or bring your own chair and shade umbrella. Mollet says to arrive by 5:45 p.m. if you want to hear the children: “I'm really excited to see it because these kids — let me tell you — it's amazing the things that they know and how much they care for the area that's around them.” Dances at the Lake brings movement to the Lake Harriet Rose Garden Jose Leonardo Santos is an anthropologist at Metropolitan State University. A big fan of the arts, Santos particularly enjoys watching dance. He recommends bringing your lawn chair to see Dances at the Lake, which takes place at Lake Harriet Rose Garden July 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. This year's event, organized by KASM Dance Collective, includes 15 dance troupes in various styles. Santos says there's something special about seeing live dance performance in that beautiful outdoor setting. “The thing I love about dance is that it's totally immersive, right? A video of [a dance performance] is not the same thing; you've got to be there to enjoy it. Dance can be just like the funnest little thing, or it can make you cry, and you don't even know why because there's no words, right? It forces you to just go off of your senses.”

Dances and balls appear throughout world literature as venues for young people to meet, flirt, and form relationships, as any reader of Pride and Prejudice, War and Peace, or Romeo and Juliet can attest. The popularity of social dance transcends class, gender, ethnic, and national boundaries. In the context of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Jewish culture, dance offers crucial insights into debates about emancipation and acculturation. While traditional Jewish law prohibits men and women from dancing together, Jewish mixed-sex dancing was understood as the very sign of modernity—and the ultimate boundary transgression. Writers of modern Jewish literature deployed dance scenes as a charged and complex arena for understanding the limits of acculturation, the dangers of ethnic mixing, and the implications of shifting gender norms and marriage patterns, while simultaneously entertaining their readers. In this book, Sonia Gollance examines the specific literary qualities of dance scenes, while also paying close attention to the broader social implications of Jewish engagement with dance. Combining cultural history with literary analysis and drawing connections to contemporary representations of Jewish social dance, Gollance illustrates how mixed-sex dancing functions as a flexible metaphor for the concerns of Jewish communities in the face of cultural transitions.
